Sound Recording: Only Allows To Record From Microphone
Apr 14, 2008
In XP I could record audio with sound recorder from anything I could hear. For example, if I was playing a WAV file, or listening to a song on the internet, I could record it. Now in Vista it only allows me to record from my microphone. I checked disabled devices and still can not get anything but the microphone to show up. Is there anyway around this besides sticking an audio cable from the headphone jack into my mic input? So far Vista has me aggravated with things I have lost, you would think a newer operating system would allow you more flexibility, not take it from you.

This worked for me before but I messed it up. I used to be able to record the sound coming from my computer and play it to my microphone right away as it goes. Meaning when I record something, it would record whatever is playing on the computer. But I forgot how to make that setting.

First of all,WOW. This is a very nice place. Well done administrators. Well to begin with i would like to say that i am a new user here and i dont know if this question had been previously asked so sorry. well i have a problem. My OS is Vista x89 Ultimate with all the recent updates, and my problem is that i dont know how to record sound in Vista. I knew how to do it on XP with a very simple software like JetAudio, but on Vista its a bit confusing. To become more clear. I dont want to record from a microphone but from the computer itself. eg some sites that play music. i would like to know how to do such a thing.

I have an HP laptop, not sure what the model is. And its running vista. I've been trying to record my guitar for awhile now using various different methods. Audacity recorder with line in, and mic. My webcam, the recorder on vista etc. And i get the same results every time. It sounds good for about 20 ish seconds, then massive quality drop and it gets skippy and staticy and just all around horrible.

It allows me to record any streaming sound, mic input, line input, etc. ( I converted cass tapes and Vinyl Records) I have created many MP3's from 10seconds to 8hrs. I tried to use it on my vista laptop and it just won't work. I have tried many recorders to MP3 but my built in mic picks up any sound in the room.
The folowing site allows you to listen to full songs AND/OR FULL ALBUMS of almost any artist available. If not there ( like good rats) it tells you it may be there soon... Miles, I thought you may like this: Artist#. does anyone have a freeware that will do what messer done?

This may be a question that gets asked a lot but I can't seem to find the answer. Is it possible to record one show while watching something else entirely? I have looked at dual tuners n such but they don't specify if this is possible. I started thinking maybe its a Media Center thing... If this is possible, can anyone reccomend a PCI tuner card that would give me this ability?

When I use programs such as sound recorders or capture cards, the audio doesn't record right. It records as if I were using a microphone. How could this be when there is no microphone plugged it? The weird part is that I can hear myself and other things in the background of the recordings. Is there a setting that would change it so that it records from the actual source?

On my old XP machine I could go into the "sound" option, select recording options and check the "stereo mix" box, then play a song in Windows Media Player and record in Roxio or another sound recording application. This was a useful way to convert song files from one format to another (for example, from wmf to mp3, or from some proprietary iTunes or Rhapsody format to mp3). This option isn't available on my new Gateway running Windows Vista. The new sound menu has "Recording options" and "Playback options". Under "Recording options" it only has Microphone, Aux and Line In. None of these work for recording from the computer. Is this a limitation of my machine, or of Vista? Is there a way around this problem? How do I record from the sound card in Vista?

Running a Toshiba Satellite (nice speakers) under Vista Home Premium SP2. There is a series of audio interviews on the web that I want to record on my HD. Currently, I'm having acceptable results simply playing through the speakers and picking it up through the microphone using Sound Recorder. It's not exactly high fidelity, but I'm dealing with speech, not music. The only problem is that it's vulnerable to any noise in the area, and four to six grandkids can produce that effortlessly.
I asked Geek Squad if I could just jumper the earphones output to the mic input, thereby blocking out external noise. She said it wouldn't work because ... yadda yadda .. powered mic ... yadda yadda ... a lot of extra noise. She confused me further with talk about software that will do this. I tried a free trial of one, but it looked as though it was still depending about the output from speakers and said nothing about gagging grandkids. Is there a way to play audio from a website and record it on my HD without depending on immediate airspace?

I have a dell lalptop with windows vista basic. I have used the sound recorder before but the quality is not that great (using the inbuilt mic). So today I brought a microphone headset (cheap one). But I still find a little bit of background noise using the sound recorder. I need this because I do poetry and I am doing some recorded peotry for use as backing for a dvd. Im just looking for the cheapest resonable option. Has anyone got any ideas? I have done a couple of peoms to dvd but the sound lets it down. This is just a project at the moment so I dont wont to spend louds of money on equipment.

I have an HP dv6500z laptop, running 32-bit Vista Home Premium. It has a single microphone input jack , but no line-in jack. The microphone jack has both, mono & stereo capability. I know that line-in and microhone jacks are not the same, but do not know if Wirdows Audio recorder software (or similar) accounts for this. Can I use the microphone input jack to record stereo signals output from another
device (e.g., a Reel-to-reel tape recoder, cassette palyer, turntable, ...). If so, does Windows provide any documentation regarding the parameters that need to be set. What about recording levels ? Is setting these mainly trial & error, or is there some basic Rule-of-Thumb to go by ? Does Windows have a similar Video Recorder application and doumentation ?

I have a desktop computer. Windows Vista Business Pro 2007 (6.0). 18 months ago, a friend from church who builds and fixes computers on the side; put the Vista OS in this tower by Centurion. I have never been inside a pc so do not know anything about the inside. It has: 2 gig RAM, DVD/CD-Rom drive: Memorez DVD16+/-DL4RWnD2ATA Device; IED Channel, VIA Bus Master IDE Controller - 0571; Vinyl AC'97 Codec Combo Driver (WMD); Mainboard-MSI PT 880 Neo-FSR (Ms-7043); Chipset: VIA PT880. I have contacted the VIA company with no replies about the soundcard. I have tried both a desktop and headset w/mic and neither works.
Someone told me it is hard to get a microphone to work with Vista. Another said the guy put a new OS onto old hardware. I am on SS, so cannot afford another pc. Do I need a new soundcard, or try a usb mic? PLease advise. I have gone into sound in control panel and unmuted the mic. It says in there Line-in not available. Jack not available.
