Finding Super-hidden Files
Apr 5, 2008I have two programs that save files to different subfolders in their Program Files folders. These programs can access these files without a problem. However, I am unable to access these files through Explorer by browsing or searching. Even when I logged in as the administrator and searched in Explorer, none of these files were found. How can they be that hidden? I need to access them. How can I access them? Vista Home
2 accounts, 1 admin, 1 user
1 program installed under admin, as Vista program and ran as user
1 program installed under user, as XP SP2 compatiable and ran as admin

Dec 12, 2008I somehow managed to make all of my files hidden. Then I tried to show hidden files and now files I've never seen before are on my computer. A remember pressing a read-only button (I think). My brother said I have to go to each folder one by one and change them to not be hidden, but I don't know which ones are supposed to be showing and which ones aren't. Also, is there a way to make them show without having to go one by one; since I hid them all at once, that to me would seem logical.

When I use the Folder Options dialog to change the options to show hidden files or system files, the change is applied in the file pane but not in the folder pane. To get it to apply there I have to close Explorer and restart it. Is there a way to get this to work right?

May 8, 2009A multitude of files, folders and sub-folders have disappeared (all from my "Documents"). Miscellaneous sub-folders within folders have disappeared, while other sub-folders remain intact. At first I was completely lost, as the files were there not 30 minutes prior... After assuming the worst and thinking that they had corrupted or been deleted due to a virus, I:
- Made sure my folder options were set properly (I can view all hidden files)
- Thoroughly checked the recycle bin
- Did numerous searches
- Downloaded Google Desktop and searched some more
- Ran various "undelete" and "recovery" programs with no results
- Did a system restore...........
AVI Files Show Pic Other Show Black Icon
Feb 21, 2009Is my first post and i have a problem with avi file icon. I am from Cyprus and my english its not very good. Some of my avi files show a picture and some others show a black icon. I did not have this problem before. Before all my avi files show a picture. I have K-Lite Mega Codec Pack (new version). I try Vista Codec but i can solve it. I have had this laptop for over 2 years and this is the first time this has happened.I have been reading several posts and many of them say to go to the "Sound, Video & Game controllers" tab in the Device Manager. Mar 23, 2008I have enabled viewing hidden files and folders. Still, some folders and files are hidden from me! Here is an example: I navigate to eMule folder, which should contain Incoming folder, but does not. I start up eMule, go to Tools and select Go To Incoming Folder and the folder opens up normally showing the files I have downloaded. This problem also exists with a game I own. I'm not able to view the map files I have created with the game. Yet when I start the editor and choose to open a previous map file, it is nicely there in the folder it is supposed to be in.

Feb 21, 2009Recently I upgraded my computer. I have some hidden files on my external from my old system (XP). I cannot, for the life of me get these files to open.
Here is what I have tried:
- Changing ownership (after disabling the easy sharing folder option)
- Working with the admin command prompt (every time it said the folder on my external was a bad or syntactically incorrect entry).
- Changing user permissions.
- Logging in on safe mode and trying the above things.
The files show up as green text, and even after all of these attempts (and copious head-against-wall banging) I cannot open the files. Every program I try to open them with says “You do not have permission to access this file”. A similar message is displayed every time I try to move or change the files.
I have been able to open a few of the files (since the problem began) even though they do not seem to be different file types or status’.
I read a few threads similar to this, but every method has failed, and my problem seems a little different given the XP to Vista nature of the problem and the green text nonsense.

I am using Vista 32 bit Ultimate version. I tried some options in index that didn't understand much about it to hide hidden folders and files during search. I don't want to show the search results that i made those folders and files hidden to be visible in search.

Mar 31, 2008I performed a Clean Install of Windows Vista Ultimate, on a new computer. I loaded all of my software in preparation of switching my production system from WXP to Vista. I then noticed something about the disk space.
I have 232 GB drive and C Properties indicated I was using 69 GB. Looking at the drive with Windows Explorer (Folder options are set to show all files), I tag all files and the properties show I am using 19 GB of storage. That is correct, as it is similar to the amount of storage used on several Vista beta systems. So, where is the missing 50 GB?
I found a program, WinDirStat (http://windirstat.info/) which confirms I am missing 50 GB as it does the same math I do and it labels the missing amount as Unknown. That is not terrible useful, as one would like to know what the actual files are.
I did all of the usual cleaning up (Disk Cleanup, clear the Recycle bin, remove all System Points and turn of Shadow Copies). The System Volume Information folder has only 20 KB of files in it. I surfed the Internet looking for other file management software which would show the missing files. I did not find any.
Uninstalled Avg 4.8 And Super Spyware.

Nov 1, 2008I've read a lot about problems that are almost the same as mine, but not quite.I have, somehow, deleted the only administrator account in vista. Basically because I deleted all the passwords stored, I guess. I know there is a super-administrator account but I can not access it in any way: I've tried restarting normally, chose administrator, put the blan passsword but get a return saying the account has been disabled. I've tried restarting in safe mode (no administrator login available). I've tried the command prompt and net user (error 5) I've even tried regedit (not allowed) The mater is you have to be an administrator to create another administrator account. The laptop doesn't have any crucial information, so I would gladly format it.

Mar 23, 2008Vista Home Prem 32bit..... I used the "search" feature to look for something and the results displayed several Folders & Files I had deleted some time back. When I right clicked on these items that had been deleled...I got the message, The item cannot be found.....make sure the Folder exists....check that the path is correct.....Or similar words. I would expect to see the message appear appear because the items don't exist.....but why did the search display them? Is there a way to clean emove them so they don't show up on future Searches?

Mar 20, 2010I have a folder with about 142 gigs of files in it and when I open it up, it takes sometimes 15 sec. before anything shows in the folder, while the little strip across the top of the folder does its "Progress" thing. Yes, I have Indexing on for that partition (this is a partition of my main hard drive; it is a 566g partition used only for archiving and it has 126gigs left).
What strikes me as particularly stupid about this is that it does the "progress" thing EVERY time, even if I close it and open it again 10 seconds later, it does not "remember" the indexing or whatever it just did! Is there any way to fix this? Seems absolutely ridiculous to have a super fast computer that can't find files in a folder without waiting 15 seconds!
.dmp Files And Windows/System Logs That Show The Unrecoverable Events
Apr 8, 2009I have a brand new HP Pavilion desktop and the first two days it gave me blue screens of death. Subsequently I had an expert look at the .dmp files and Windows/System logs that show the unrecoverable events and he said that it clearly shows a -hardware -problem and that I should tell HP and get a new computer. (I have had it just 4 days longer than Best Buy's return policy was in effect because I did not figure out how serious the problem was until 2 days ago. I had been thinking it was just a conflict with my monitor or something but this guy says the .dmp files show that it is a memory or processor problem and cannot be fixed.)
I spent 3 and 1/2 hours online in a chat session with an IDIOT supervisor in India and he did not fully understand the problem and kept preaching "System Restore". I kept saying that -System Restore will not fix a Hardware problem- so there was no point to it. He finally came up with this: "sir, the processor sends some IRQ requests etc to other hardware devices, and the log suggests me that theres a conflick in such IRQ requests." Even so, how is System Restore going to FIX a hardware problem that already exists???..........
