Sharing Grayed Out
Mar 23, 2008
Private network. In network and sharing center I have network discovery, file sharing, print sharing, public sharing and printer sharing all turned on. When I try to share a disk the sharing option is grayed out same with the printer. What am I overlooking?

I just noticed that everything under the HP printer's properties is grayed out and so I cannot change anything. I thought ownership/privileges could be the cause of my not being able to print from this test VISTA machine over my LAN to the HP AIO printer which is connected directly via USB on my XP machine. But I can't change anything - I notice other things (e.g. share name) are grayed out also preventing change. At the very least I want to be able to regain control of all this. Remember - I can print in reverse over my LAN (using another printer). That is, from my XP machine to the EPSON printer connected to this test VISTA machine. I seem to be able to access and change files/folders at will from each machine to the other - so I feel I must have my LAN set up at least nearly correctly. Yes, I have turned User Account Control off.

When writing an email, clicking on insert drops down various choices, but Signature & Business card are grayed out. Does anyone know how to use this feature? It was easy to set up in Outlook Express.

At random points, my Volume and Network icons disappear from the Notification Area and when I try to restore them from the Properties menu, they're grayed out. The policy registry entries in both HKLM and HKCU don't exist. A simple log out/log in typically restores them, but is usually too much of a nuisance to bother doing.

MS Vista Home Premium I am trying to use MS paint and the 'A' tool on the tool bar is grayed out and not clickable. Do I have to pay to use this tool? Also if I go to view the 'Text Toolbar' option is checked but again it is grayed out. I am no expert on windows but I thought paint was included with the OS. PS Don't bother telling me that some other program is better, I just need to plan my flower garden and MS paint is fine for that.

Network of two computers, a desktop running vista home premium and a laptop running vista basic. I am the only user on each of the computers, my user account name is the same on both computers and I don't need a password to log on. File sharing is 'on', password protected sharing is 'off', and I have shared the 'documents' folder on both machines
When I view my network I see both computers "PAUL-PC" and PAUL-LAPTOP", when I select the one I'm not working on I see "Users", "Documents" and "Printers". When I select "Documents" I see "\PAUL-LAPTOPDocuments is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource....... etc."

I know this is a Vista forum, but I do not see any Windows 7 forums. This has carried through a number of recent builds of Win7 and now is in the RC, 7100 build. Not sure if this is a change in functionality or a bug. If you want to copy the profile of a local user, you can login to the PC (Vista and earlier) as the local Administrator, go to System Properties > User Profiles, choose a user's profile, then click the Copy To button to copy that profile to another profile. In Win7, the Copy To button is grayed out when you choose another user's profile. All you can choose from is Change Type or Delete.

i just bought LOGITECH x-530 5.1 Speaker system. when i go to "Realtek HD Audio manager" and choose "5.1 speaker" the "rear pair" is grayed out! Here is a picture; if i change it to 7.1. then the "rear pair" will appear and i will be able to preform the test and hear sound... B-U-T ---> when i will play movies.. (divx, mkx, bluray.. ect'...) i don't hear the people talking.. it's like the wrong sound configuration information goes to the speakers. it will seem the people talking coms from the sub-woofer.. and again really really dim... .+ the rear speakers will work but very low (even when i put it on full volume) . any idea how to set up correctly the sound ? so even if i am on 7.1. the sound will go to the speakers as 5.1 and send the right information to each speaker?

One of the small networks I manage had a Win2k DC that crashed. We replaced it with a 2008 SBS & since most of the clients were XP, I was able to join computers to the new domain & copy the profiles from the old location to the new location. That was until I got to the Vista laptop. On this computer, the profile shows as 'Unknown' & the 'copy to' option is grayed out.
I am currently copying the contents of the C:Usersusername folder to the C:Usersuser.newdomain folder. Will this be all I need? Is there an easier way? Also, under system properties>user profiles that Unknown profile shows to be 42.9 GB, but the folder I am copying is only 19.7 GB. Why such a huge difference?

I just built an HTPC wiith Vista64 SP1 and am having a problem. I have a DFI LanParty X58-T3H6 motherboard and a VisionTek Radeon HD 4870 Video card with HD audio. I have an HDMI cable going to my Sony AV receiver and all I get is Stereo Audio. The subwoofer never comes out of standby nor does the AV receiver indicate anything but a stereo input.
I have the RealTek HDMI audio device installed and it says it is working properly under Device Manager. Under properties all that is offered is Stereo speakers. Surround Sound is shown as an option but it is grayed out and not selectable. All drivers are up to date as of two days ago, and I have the on-board sound of the motherboard disabled in its BIOS.
Other HDMI devices, such as my XBOX 360, do surround sound through the Sony AV receiver. VisionTek support told me to install the HDMI RealTek driver, but that's all the help they've been able to give me.

I write click on a folder and see that the "Read-only (Only applies to files in folder)" attribute is checked and grayed out. I uncheck it, click Apply, and leave the "Apple changes to this folder, subfolders and files" radio button clicked. I hit OK and a few minutes later all the permissions are supposedly updated. I then try to copy a file into a subfolder and... I can't. It's as though the folder, itself, is Read-only and that the "Read-only (Only applies to files in folder)" checkbox does indeed "only apply to files in folders" and not to folders, themselves.
I go to a folder that has no subfolders in it and see that the "Read- only (Only applies to files in folder)" checkbox for that is grayed out and checked, as well. I uncheck it and right click and... it works. I right click on the parent directory (which contains no other subfolders) and do the same thing and... it's still grayed out.

My OS is Windows Vista Business and I am attempting to disable the auto startup of a program. I located the program in Windows Defender, Category: Startup Programs but all options to "Remove, Disable and Enable" are grayed out. I also noticed the majority though not all auto startup programs in the Startup Category are grayed out. Why is this? What other course of action may I take to disable the unneeded auto startup of unnecessary programs? Also, my inquiry pertains specifically to an HP Digital Camera software.

After installing McAfee Site Advisor, it is "grayed out" in the toolbar settings window of IE8, therefore I can't check it to turn it on. If the new "Safety Filter" in IE8 tools menu is Microsoft's answer to relace Site Advisor, it's a poor substitute. Site advisor turns yellow or red when encountering a suspicious web site. Safety Filter requires that the user determine if they find a suspicious web site, then they Ask Microsoft if it's OK. Site Advisor is far superior.

Don't know how this happened but I deleted a coulple of files from my Documents Folder (Documents, Music, Pictures, Recently changed, etc.), and the whole Folder ended up in the Recycle Bin. I now have an exact duplication of my whole folder in the Recycle Bin. If I delete a file from the copy in the Bin, it deletes it from the Folder on my desktop. The "Empty recycle Bin" option is grayed out. How do I get rid of this duplication? It's taking up about 3 GB of my hard drive so obviously I have somehow copied all my files to the recycle bin.

I am using Vista and have a problem with my Windows Mail settings. While sending a message, I was trying to request a read receipt, but must have clicked on the wrong option, so that now when I click on Tools, then try to check on Options, the Option box shows "Request Secure Receipt." I cannot click on it, as it "grayed out". How do I get rid of this setting? P.S. Since my mistake, I discovered the correct way to request a receipt!

I want to be able to move a file across my home network (both PCs are Vista). I have shared the destination folder with "Everyone" to be a co-owner. I do not have passwords set up. I can "see" the destination folder across the network and can open documents in it, but it will not allow me to move files into it. The weird thing is, I encountered this for the first time a couple of days ago. The folder was shared, but I could not move a file into it.
That was when I looked into sharing and realized that I had to change permission lever to "co-owner" in order to create documents. Once I updated the sharing, I was allowed to move the file. However, today I am not allowed to perform the very same action; I get "Destination Folder Access Denied, you need permission to perform this action".

I have a new computer, Vista that I can't get file sharing to work. I have it turned on and can see the computer but when I try to access it I get the message I don't have permission etc. I did get print sharing working. The computer I'm using that I'm trying to access from also has Vista. It's the one with the router. I have a notebook on the network, xp, which I can access just fine. The "new" computer I can see the other two computers and access their files. I have everything checked correctly in the network card. I've turned off my firewall and disabled Kaspersky.

I have a PC running Vista Ultimate x64. Attached to that PC (via USB) is a HP Photosmart C3180. My wife's laptop is running XP Professional x86. I am trying to allow her to print to the printer attached to my Vista x64 PC. I install the printer properly and confirm it working on my Vista x64 PC. I then share it out under the name HPC3180. I disable password protected sharing and under the security settings of the printer I give "Anonymous Logon" permission to access the printer.
I know generally I would have to specify the x86 version of the driver under the "Additional Drivers" area in the properties of the printer; but in this case I do not know where to get the .INF files. I can download the drivers for the 32 bit version of XP from HP's site, but they aren't self extracting EXE files so I cannot get the INF file out of them to use. I even tried setting it up (on XP x86 laptop) as a "Local Printer" with a "Local Port" that points the printer. I then tried to use a variety of older and generic drivers. At worst it refused to print entirely. At best I got some sort of seemingly random output from the printer.

i have a couple of problems now, both very annoying:
1) my pc does not connect to the internet when i wake it from sleep. It requires me to shut down and turn off power completely, then reboot. My previous install of windows was fine
2) my pc is set up (as far as i can tell) to file share. to see other computers AND share. I cannot see other XP machines on my network, they cannot see me. Before i reinstalled it was also fine. I have tried so many different things now to rectify the problem but nothing seems to solve it
I'm a little annoyed at microsoft to be honest. I've put up with so many problems and worked aorund them, but sleeping and file sharing - two features which they used to sell vista have given me such problems recently.

We have a combination wired/wireless home network in my house, consisting of 4 computers, all connected through the router which connects directly to the internet. The configuration is this:
Desktop1 - connected directly to router, running XP
Desktop2- connected directly to router, running Vista
Laptop1 - connected wirelessly, running Vista
Laptop2- connected wirelessly, running XP.
As of right now, Desktop 2, Laptop1 and Laptop 2 have no problems sharing files with each other. Desktop 1 can view all the other computers shared files, but Laptop1 cannot
view any of Desktop 1's shared files. I consistently get a "denied access" message.
I don't know if the other computers can access Desktop1 (they aren't my computers). It's most important to get Laptop1 and Desktop1 to share files. All computers have shared files/printers on, with password protection off, and I've gone through the network wizards over and over.
I should mention that Laptop1 can *view* Desktop1 on the network. It sees it, it knows it's there...but the Desktop will not allow access, even though the files on the Desktop are set to be shared. I also tried turning the firewall off, and it still would not grant access. None of the other computers are having issues...there's go to be a solution to this, I'm just not finding it.

I have 3 computers sharing a printer through a Netgear print server - PS121. The three print fine - they run Windows XP. Now I want to add a Windows Vista computer. However, the Vista computer does not "see" the print server. Do I need to attach the print server directly to the Vista machine for installation and then go back to the traditional setup w/ the Print Server as a network device?

I have very similar question to one below, but the other way around. I have a network of four computers: Prospero (Windows Me), Server (Windows XP pro), Miranda (laptop/wireless, Windows XP pro), and Sound (Vista Home Premium). Sound only sees the XP computers in the mapping facility, but does not see their shared volumes, so I can't use them. It also doesn't see the shared volume of an Iomega network drive.
All the others can see the shared folders on the Sound, although Sound won't accept the password entered from Prospero (Windows ME) so it can't open the shared volumes. I've tried with and without password access to the Vista machine. I want to upgrade Server to Vista Business, but I'm not going to do this until I can fix this issue. (I've gone through all the troubleshooting steps.) As an aside, if I try to mount the network drive using the Iomega utility, it says Network Service not started, but it doesn't tell me which service. The event list doesn't really help either.

I have windows vista home premium and two users accounts on the pc. Is there a way for my calendar to be viewed and /or updated by the other user on this pc? I have outlook 2003 and I know that I can't set up my calendar for sharing to someone on another pc without going thru an exchange server. However, I was hoping that because my wife and I were both users on the same pc that she would be able to have access to my calendar when she was signed on in her own account. Also, because I can't share my calendar without going thru an exchange server I was hoping to be able to export my master calendar that I have on an older XP desktop and bring in onto my vista laptop. For some reason even though the export files seems to have all my entries, it only puts some of the items into my calendar on the vista laptop.

I realize this is a Vista group, but I can't seem to locate any MS Win7 group with my NG reader (TB). On my Win7 machine (Win7 Home Premium)I have marked several folders as being shared, and they remain shared at all times, but there is absolutely NO indication of the folder being shared when viewed in Explorer on that computer. In previous versions of the OS there has been the 'palm-up hand" and the little 'whatever it is' in Vista but nothing in Win7. Is it something I have to turn on somewhere, or is it just that Win7 provides no visual indication of sharing on a folder?

My Vista and XP and Housemates computer all successfully share to my Xbox 360
My XP, will not share to my housemates XP.
My Vista will not share to my housemates XP
My Vista will not share to my xp
However they will all quite happily file share thru shared folders, just cannot media share. Each does not show the other in the 'allow this device' list in Windows Media Player. I have trawled around the internet extensivly but not been able to find a solution. I have tried cutting internet, leaving the lan on and killing all local firewalls...to no avail.
