RPC Log On Is Incorrect/grayed Out
May 15, 2010What do I do if my log on is incorrect and grayed out and I am unable to change it back to Local Service from Network Service?

Sharing Grayed Out
Mar 23, 2008Private network. In network and sharing center I have network discovery, file sharing, print sharing, public sharing and printer sharing all turned on. When I try to share a disk the sharing option is grayed out same with the printer. What am I overlooking?

Mar 23, 2008I just noticed that everything under the HP printer's properties is grayed out and so I cannot change anything. I thought ownership/privileges could be the cause of my not being able to print from this test VISTA machine over my LAN to the HP AIO printer which is connected directly via USB on my XP machine. But I can't change anything - I notice other things (e.g. share name) are grayed out also preventing change. At the very least I want to be able to regain control of all this. Remember - I can print in reverse over my LAN (using another printer). That is, from my XP machine to the EPSON printer connected to this test VISTA machine. I seem to be able to access and change files/folders at will from each machine to the other - so I feel I must have my LAN set up at least nearly correctly. Yes, I have turned User Account Control off.

Feb 19, 2009At random points, my Volume and Network icons disappear from the Notification Area and when I try to restore them from the Properties menu, they're grayed out. The policy registry entries in both HKLM and HKCU don't exist. A simple log out/log in typically restores them, but is usually too much of a nuisance to bother doing.

Apr 22, 2008MS Vista Home Premium I am trying to use MS paint and the 'A' tool on the tool bar is grayed out and not clickable. Do I have to pay to use this tool? Also if I go to view the 'Text Toolbar' option is checked but again it is grayed out. I am no expert on windows but I thought paint was included with the OS. PS Don't bother telling me that some other program is better, I just need to plan my flower garden and MS paint is fine for that.

May 10, 2009I know this is a Vista forum, but I do not see any Windows 7 forums. This has carried through a number of recent builds of Win7 and now is in the RC, 7100 build. Not sure if this is a change in functionality or a bug. If you want to copy the profile of a local user, you can login to the PC (Vista and earlier) as the local Administrator, go to System Properties > User Profiles, choose a user's profile, then click the Copy To button to copy that profile to another profile. In Win7, the Copy To button is grayed out when you choose another user's profile. All you can choose from is Change Type or Delete.

Jan 28, 2010i just bought LOGITECH x-530 5.1 Speaker system. when i go to "Realtek HD Audio manager" and choose "5.1 speaker" the "rear pair" is grayed out! Here is a picture; if i change it to 7.1. then the "rear pair" will appear and i will be able to preform the test and hear sound... B-U-T ---> when i will play movies.. (divx, mkx, bluray.. ect'...) i don't hear the people talking.. it's like the wrong sound configuration information goes to the speakers. it will seem the people talking coms from the sub-woofer.. and again really really dim... .+ the rear speakers will work but very low (even when i put it on full volume) . any idea how to set up correctly the sound ? so even if i am on 7.1. the sound will go to the speakers as 5.1 and send the right information to each speaker?

Mar 3, 2010One of the small networks I manage had a Win2k DC that crashed. We replaced it with a 2008 SBS & since most of the clients were XP, I was able to join computers to the new domain & copy the profiles from the old location to the new location. That was until I got to the Vista laptop. On this computer, the profile shows as 'Unknown' & the 'copy to' option is grayed out.
I am currently copying the contents of the C:Usersusername folder to the C:Usersuser.newdomain folder. Will this be all I need? Is there an easier way? Also, under system properties>user profiles that Unknown profile shows to be 42.9 GB, but the folder I am copying is only 19.7 GB. Why such a huge difference?
Surround Sound Option Grayed Out With HD4870 And HDMI Connection
Feb 26, 2009I just built an HTPC wiith Vista64 SP1 and am having a problem. I have a DFI LanParty X58-T3H6 motherboard and a VisionTek Radeon HD 4870 Video card with HD audio. I have an HDMI cable going to my Sony AV receiver and all I get is Stereo Audio. The subwoofer never comes out of standby nor does the AV receiver indicate anything but a stereo input.
I have the RealTek HDMI audio device installed and it says it is working properly under Device Manager. Under properties all that is offered is Stereo speakers. Surround Sound is shown as an option but it is grayed out and not selectable. All drivers are up to date as of two days ago, and I have the on-board sound of the motherboard disabled in its BIOS.
Other HDMI devices, such as my XBOX 360, do surround sound through the Sony AV receiver. VisionTek support told me to install the HDMI RealTek driver, but that's all the help they've been able to give me.
.Net Framework Is Incorrect
Mar 23, 2008I have had recent trouble with my .Net. Specifically with QuickBooks not
opening up.
I called them, they said it was my .Net framework that was incorrect. We
deleted it and reinstalled it.
Now, of course, I cannot open other programs - the error message is that I
need to install one of the following: V1.1.4322 or V1.1.3705
A. WHERE are these versions available to download.
B. Is there possibly another version that will take care of this whole mess.

DVD Region Incorrect
Jul 29, 2009This is actually a Windows 7 issue, but I cant find a group for that. I have DVD (totally Legal, Region 2), I have installed the RC on two computers. Both have their DVD drives set to Region 2 On one computer, it plays fine with windows media player. One the other it say the system is set to Region 1, and wont play.

Everything was fine and it showed as 8GB memory however now its showing as 7.25GB I have not changed any settings within windows and the BIOS. Any ideas what would cause this?
User Name Or Password Is Incorrect
Sep 17, 2009Although there is probably a thead elsewhere with a solution i think perhaps my problem will be slightly different. My grandmother has forgotten her password to log on to her desktop. i find this very strange do to the fact that we were just on the computer last night, and i know for a fact that we both havent forgotten the password. Because ive actually used it to log on as well. But now the pc is saying the user name or password is incorrect,(strange)
She is WV. Home Prem. of corse the caps lock is off, i havent tried f2,f8,f10 or whatever f-button during restart because im not sure that will help anything. no vista cd in the house. and here is where we run into the dead end...................

Sep 16, 2009I have a customers computer that was running xp pro, I did the compatability check for an upgrade everything was good. I did the upgrade correctly. The machine rebooted the final time and said user and login incorrect? so I clicked ok and was brought to the login screen "administrator" and entered my password. No problem got right in. There were some software issues etc etc nothing major. I then went to microsoft and started the update process, specifically the updates for windows and other stuff IE hardware etc. I did the active x...then the update failed it said that I have to log in as an administrator.
let me back up, during the upgrade it failed at first and said that have to remove the C:user folder or rename it....I went into c and renamed it user1....then the upgrade went smooth...............
Access Data, Incorrect Password
Oct 17, 2008I have an Acer laptop which came with Vista Home Premium installed. I set up a password on the Personal Secure Disk (PSD) and put some of my genealogy data in there. When I come to access the data the system tells me I have used an incorrect password. Now I know I have the correct password - something has gone wrong. Are there any clever hacks developed to get into the PSD by evading the password protection?

Vista shows that I have 4 gigabytes of memory in the system properties and welcome screen but my Winver command and the Task Manager displays that I have only 2.7 gigabytes of memory? I recently installed a Radeon 3870 HD 1 GB graphics card. Could my GPU could be eating up the rest of the memory. My motherboard is a DFI Lan Party UT NF4 Ultra D. Dec 29, 2008I had had a problem with my original Vista acct. I lost access to the C drive. Done by my naive fiddling around with permissions while in a shortcut to OS(C). A computer guru tried to get the drive back, but I think he felt that although he got c drive back, it didn't go well. He then set up my "real" admin account and a third regular acct. He then suggested that I transfer docs, pics, etc from the first acct into the new regular acct. This proved a little daunting to me and I was lazy about having to do all this transferring of files and folders and retweaking things again. Particularly so when the original acct got back the c drive. So, I went back to using the "fixed" original acct. There is an assigned password to this original acct, whereas there are no PWs assinged to my other regular acct or the admin acct.
Problem: When booting up, I get an "Incorrect Password." I enter the pw for the "fixed" acct and it opens. Going to Start>switch accts is no problem as the other two accts are easily opened without pws. How do I (1) Get rid of this annoyning prompt? (2) Give pws to my other two accts? I am nominally computer savvy, but working with Vista and accts and permissions has been a set back for me, so a little more explanatory detail.
Incorrect Summer Times In Vista Clock
Apr 13, 2008As far as I can tell the Vista clock does not take into account that Great Britain time is UTC+1 during the summer. It is currently showing UTC and London time being the same.
Is there a setting I'm missing? I have my local time set as Pacific time and
UTC is off by one hour as it is using Great Britain time as UTC.
Newsgroup Shows Incorrect Unread Count
Jun 30, 2008I've had this problem with XP/OE and it seems to exist with a new install of Vista / Windows Mail. After a while, a newsgroup starts showing an unread count when it shouldn't. For example, at the moment, m.p.vc.ide.general shows that I have 3 unread. When I select it, no posts show up. If I do "catch up" from the right click menu, it clears but it comes back next time I select the group.
It seems that this happens after running the automatic "Windows mail can optimize" thing. A second thing is that "catch up" seems to take a lot longer after running this optimize. Clicking on a message, doing a select all, and then mark as read works immediately. This also existed with XP pro. Is there any way to reset whatever is causing this?
Group Contacts Incorrect Or Improper Email
Mar 23, 2008When I send an email using a large group and just one of the emails in the group is an incorrect or improper email, it will give an error message and tell you that the email is not being sent because of the email. One would think that all of the other email addresses would get the message, but it won't. Is there a way to correct it so the email will at least go out to the other correct addresses?

Nov 25, 2008When my Notebook first starts up, a note in the bar at the bottom of the opening 'Acer' screen graphic shows; <F12> Change Boot Order in Vista I don't have the confidence yet, just to hit the <F12> to discover where this leads to, and what it is all about. I fear that I may do something that will de-stabilise my perfectly operating system, or worse, get into a predicament that I have no knowledge off, nor the technical ability to escape from it. I have searched through the Forum threads, but have been unable to find anything that discusses the <F12> boot order. I would like to know the following:
1. In what situations is the <F12> boot key used, or when should it be used?
2. What system boot order does it change, and can this be beneficial to the performance of the Notebook? [my system in specs below....saves a lot of re-typing!].
3. Are the instructions clear and understandable to a 'non-geek'?
4. Is it easy to exit or escape from <F12> window, and can that be done without making any field or boot order changes?
5. Is there an ability to revert to, or restore to, former boot system settings, if incorrect or invalid changes are made, which later de-stabilise the system start-up?
Parent Directory: "Read-only (Only Applies To Files In Folder)" Is Grayed Out
Mar 29, 2009I write click on a folder and see that the "Read-only (Only applies to files in folder)" attribute is checked and grayed out. I uncheck it, click Apply, and leave the "Apple changes to this folder, subfolders and files" radio button clicked. I hit OK and a few minutes later all the permissions are supposedly updated. I then try to copy a file into a subfolder and... I can't. It's as though the folder, itself, is Read-only and that the "Read-only (Only applies to files in folder)" checkbox does indeed "only apply to files in folders" and not to folders, themselves.
I go to a folder that has no subfolders in it and see that the "Read- only (Only applies to files in folder)" checkbox for that is grayed out and checked, as well. I uncheck it and right click and... it works. I right click on the parent directory (which contains no other subfolders) and do the same thing and... it's still grayed out.
Windows Defender Startup Programs:"Remove, Disable And Enable" Grayed Out
May 18, 2008My OS is Windows Vista Business and I am attempting to disable the auto startup of a program. I located the program in Windows Defender, Category: Startup Programs but all options to "Remove, Disable and Enable" are grayed out. I also noticed the majority though not all auto startup programs in the Startup Category are grayed out. Why is this? What other course of action may I take to disable the unneeded auto startup of unnecessary programs? Also, my inquiry pertains specifically to an HP Digital Camera software.

Jun 17, 2008After installing McAfee Site Advisor, it is "grayed out" in the toolbar settings window of IE8, therefore I can't check it to turn it on. If the new "Safety Filter" in IE8 tools menu is Microsoft's answer to relace Site Advisor, it's a poor substitute. Site advisor turns yellow or red when encountering a suspicious web site. Safety Filter requires that the user determine if they find a suspicious web site, then they Ask Microsoft if it's OK. Site Advisor is far superior.
