Sharing

Nov 18, 2009

I want to be able to move a file across my home network (both PCs are Vista). I have shared the destination folder with "Everyone" to be a co-owner. I do not have passwords set up. I can "see" the destination folder across the network and can open documents in it, but it will not allow me to move files into it. The weird thing is, I encountered this for the first time a couple of days ago. The folder was shared, but I could not move a file into it.

That was when I looked into sharing and realized that I had to change permission lever to "co-owner" in order to create documents. Once I updated the sharing, I was allowed to move the file. However, today I am not allowed to perform the very same action; I get "Destination Folder Access Denied, you need permission to perform this action".

File Sharing Is 'on', Password Protected Sharing Is 'off'

Mar 23, 2008

Network of two computers, a desktop running vista home premium and a laptop running vista basic. I am the only user on each of the computers, my user account name is the same on both computers and I don't need a password to log on. File sharing is 'on', password protected sharing is 'off', and I have shared the 'documents' folder on both machines

When I view my network I see both computers "PAUL-PC" and PAUL-LAPTOP", when I select the one I'm not working on I see "Users", "Documents" and "Printers". When I select "Documents" I see "\PAUL-LAPTOPDocuments is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource....... etc."

File Sharing

Aug 25, 2009

I have a new computer, Vista that I can't get file sharing to work. I have it turned on and can see the computer but when I try to access it I get the message I don't have permission etc. I did get print sharing working. The computer I'm using that I'm trying to access from also has Vista. It's the one with the router. I have a notebook on the network, xp, which I can access just fine. The "new" computer I can see the other two computers and access their files. I have everything checked correctly in the network card. I've turned off my firewall and disabled Kaspersky.

Printer Sharing From X64 To XP X86

Jan 1, 2008

I have a PC running Vista Ultimate x64. Attached to that PC (via USB) is a HP Photosmart C3180. My wife's laptop is running XP Professional x86. I am trying to allow her to print to the printer attached to my Vista x64 PC. I install the printer properly and confirm it working on my Vista x64 PC. I then share it out under the name HPC3180. I disable password protected sharing and under the security settings of the printer I give "Anonymous Logon" permission to access the printer.

I know generally I would have to specify the x86 version of the driver under the "Additional Drivers" area in the properties of the printer; but in this case I do not know where to get the .INF files. I can download the drivers for the 32 bit version of XP from HP's site, but they aren't self extracting EXE files so I cannot get the INF file out of them to use. I even tried setting it up (on XP x86 laptop) as a "Local Printer" with a "Local Port" that points the printer. I then tried to use a variety of older and generic drivers. At worst it refused to print entirely. At best I got some sort of seemingly random output from the printer.

Odd File Sharing

Apr 25, 2008

i have a couple of problems now, both very annoying:

1) my pc does not connect to the internet when i wake it from sleep. It requires me to shut down and turn off power completely, then reboot. My previous install of windows was fine

2) my pc is set up (as far as i can tell) to file share. to see other computers AND share. I cannot see other XP machines on my network, they cannot see me. Before i reinstalled it was also fine. I have tried so many different things now to rectify the problem but nothing seems to solve it

I'm a little annoyed at microsoft to be honest. I've put up with so many problems and worked aorund them, but sleeping and file sharing - two features which they used to sell vista have given me such problems recently.

Sharing Between XP And Vista

Mar 23, 2008

We have a combination wired/wireless home network in my house, consisting of 4 computers, all connected through the router which connects directly to the internet. The configuration is this:

Desktop1 - connected directly to router, running XP
Desktop2- connected directly to router, running Vista
Laptop1 - connected wirelessly, running Vista
Laptop2- connected wirelessly, running XP.

As of right now, Desktop 2, Laptop1 and Laptop 2 have no problems sharing files with each other. Desktop 1 can view all the other computers shared files, but Laptop1 cannot
view any of Desktop 1's shared files. I consistently get a "denied access" message.

I don't know if the other computers can access Desktop1 (they aren't my computers). It's most important to get Laptop1 and Desktop1 to share files. All computers have shared files/printers on, with password protection off, and I've gone through the network wizards over and over.

I should mention that Laptop1 can *view* Desktop1 on the network. It sees it, it knows it's there...but the Desktop will not allow access, even though the files on the Desktop are set to be shared. I also tried turning the firewall off, and it still would not grant access. None of the other computers are having issues...there's go to be a solution to this, I'm just not finding it.

Sharing Printer

I have 3 computers sharing a printer through a Netgear print server - PS121. The three print fine - they run Windows XP. Now I want to add a Windows Vista computer. However, the Vista computer does not "see" the print server. Do I need to attach the print server directly to the Vista machine for installation and then go back to the traditional setup w/ the Print Server as a network device?

XP File Sharing

May 14, 2008

I have very similar question to one below, but the other way around. I have a network of four computers: Prospero (Windows Me), Server (Windows XP pro), Miranda (laptop/wireless, Windows XP pro), and Sound (Vista Home Premium). Sound only sees the XP computers in the mapping facility, but does not see their shared volumes, so I can't use them. It also doesn't see the shared volume of an Iomega network drive.

All the others can see the shared folders on the Sound, although Sound won't accept the password entered from Prospero (Windows ME) so it can't open the shared volumes. I've tried with and without password access to the Vista machine. I want to upgrade Server to Vista Business, but I'm not going to do this until I can fix this issue. (I've gone through all the troubleshooting steps.) As an aside, if I try to mount the network drive using the Iomega utility, it says Network Service not started, but it doesn't tell me which service. The event list doesn't really help either.

Can't Set Up Calendar For Sharing

Aug 13, 2009

I have windows vista home premium and two users accounts on the pc. Is there a way for my calendar to be viewed and /or updated by the other user on this pc? I have outlook 2003 and I know that I can't set up my calendar for sharing to someone on another pc without going thru an exchange server. However, I was hoping that because my wife and I were both users on the same pc that she would be able to have access to my calendar when she was signed on in her own account. Also, because I can't share my calendar without going thru an exchange server I was hoping to be able to export my master calendar that I have on an older XP desktop and bring in onto my vista laptop. For some reason even though the export files seems to have all my entries, it only puts some of the items into my calendar on the vista laptop.

Win 7 Provides No Sharing Folder

May 7, 2010

I realize this is a Vista group, but I can't seem to locate any MS Win7 group with my NG reader (TB). On my Win7 machine (Win7 Home Premium)I have marked several folders as being shared, and they remain shared at all times, but there is absolutely NO indication of the folder being shared when viewed in Explorer on that computer. In previous versions of the OS there has been the 'palm-up hand" and the little 'whatever it is' in Vista but nothing in Win7. Is it something I have to turn on somewhere, or is it just that Win7 provides no visual indication of sharing on a folder?

However they will all quite happily file share thru shared folders, just cannot media share. Each does not show the other in the 'allow this device' list in Windows Media Player. I have trawled around the internet extensivly but not been able to find a solution. I have tried cutting internet, leaving the lan on and killing all local firewalls...to no avail.

Network Sharing

Apr 4, 2009

I cannot seem to figure out with my network sharing. I have a wireless network with 2 laptops running Vista home premium and 1 xp-pro laptop all behind a linksys router. At this point I have all computer seeing and sharing (only from public folders) fine. I want to be able to share one of the partitons that I created on one of the Vista laptops(home premuim) as a share for backup, but other Vista laptop won't let me have access to it. It does however let me have access to the public sharing folder though. How can I access this Drive/partition?

Network discovery is on, file sharing is on, printer sharing is on, password protection is on, all computers have same corresponding usernames and passwords, properties of the particular partition in question is configured to share. All computers have the same workgroup name. What I am trying to do, in a nutshell, is to be able to use that one partition for backup images for all 3 computers(has a very large drive on that specific laptop) So I even though about maybe mapping that it into the public sharing folder, a workaround, if you will, but I'm not sure if it would give me the available premissions to be able to do what I need it for.

Files And Printer Sharing

Nov 14, 2009

I have a wireless network with a Linksys WRT160N router connected to a Sony desktop running XP MCE(2005). In addition, I have another Toshiba laptop running XP Home Edition.

With the new Win7 laptop in the Network I can see all 3 computers, as well as access files in both the XP computers. However, I cannot access any of the Win 7 files from the XP computers. I also have tried to share an HP Officejet 6110 with the Win 7 laptop, but when I try to Add Printer, which I can see the name of with the Wizard, I get an error notice that access is denied.

The XP computers Workgroup name is MSHOME; however the Win 7 laptop was named WORKGROUP by default, but I changed this name to MHOME where all 3 computers now have the same Workgroup name,

If anyone can assist me in establishing both file sharing of the Win 7 laptop and adding the sharing of printer.

File Sharing Between XP And Vista

Oct 16, 2009

I just purchased a new Toshiba laptop. It is 64 bit with Vista Home Premium. Desktop is Compaq with XP. Connection between the two is cable direct connect through a Linksys router. Occasionally I do go wireless. Its a very simple network and its doesn't require any security since i am the only person that uses both computers. Toshiba can read and write files on Compaq.

Compaq can see the Toshiba in its network places but when I double-click on it, I get a request for a username and password which I do not know what to respond to since I have no passwords set on the Toshiba. I've set sharing on Toshiba C-drive and even turned off the Windows Firewall. How do I turn the password prompt off or at least know what to respond.

How Does Printer Sharing Really Work?

Jun 1, 2009

I have successfully networked my Vista Home Premium 64bit Dell laptop to my WinXP Pro PC and am able to transfer files back and forth. Now I'm trying to set up a HP 3390 USB printer that's attached to the WinXP Pro PC as a network printer, and print to it from the Vista laptop. When I try to setup the printer for networking, it seems that Vista wants a 64bit printer driver for it. Is that how network printers work?

IOW, do all USB peripherals like printers, scanners and memory card readers have to have Vista 64bit drivers to work with a networked Vista 64bit PC even though they are connected to a WinXP PC? This is not really a problem since HP does provide a 64bit Vista driver for the 3390 laser printer and also for my HP D5360 inkjet printer. But I just wanted verification of the above before I continue trying to get the printer working as a networked printer.

File Sharing : Not Successfull

Mar 23, 2008

With my Vista laptop practically every day getting access to several file shares that are on a Windows XP box causes me a major headache. Every other day or so it takes me at least 15 minutes to finally get access to a share that I need for my daily work. Initially the system often reports, that it couldn't find the other system (which is a clear lie, since one can perfectly ping the other side, even by system name, not just by IP address) or it reports right away that access was denied (without even asking for a pwd).

I then usually delete all cached credentials (using "net use * /d"). This at least triggers, that the login dialog pops up again when trying to open a share on the other system, but even though the user id and the pwd are clearly correct, the response is normally "logon unsuccessful - check ... ". Usually after dozens of attempts at some point things then suddenly work again, sometimes I have to wait for like half an hour and then try again, but I haven't yet been able to figure out, why and when. And esp. not been able to reliably reproduce this and getting it working in a controlled way and right away.
