Restore (system protection) is on to "C" drive. When I try to restore to any previous point, I get message saying that a device attached to the system is not functioning (0X8007001F). What device or system function is not working? The system does make automatic BACKUP POINTS.
View 6 RepliesA friend's Vista SP1 PC is failing to install Windows Updates and also some other updates such as those for Itunes. The symptom is that the updates get downloaded but the installation phase never finishes (he's left it for 12 hours!). In the case of the Windows Updates, there are several updates that try to install themselves as the PC is shutdown or even restarted, but the message "Installing 1 of 6" never advances: the only recourse is to switch the PC off.
As I was looking at the PC, I noticed one thing which may have a bearing on this and may even be the cause: the System Restore applet (windowssystem32 strui.exe) fails to run. It displays an initial User Account Control window but the "Restore System Files and Settings - choose a restore point" window never appears. No error message is displayed and there are no entries in any of the Event Log logs.
It occurred to me that if System Restore is buggered, this might prevent any updates working if the first thing they try to do is to create a restore point before installation begins. I can't find any reference to System Restore failing to open its initial Window - I've looked on support.microsoft.com and done a general Google search for "Vista System Restore fails". All the info seems to describe possible problems if you get slightly further and select a restore point which then fails to install properly.
Why can't I use system restore to restore back to certain restore points? I was only successful twice with it. When my laptap was new and when I used it after re-formatting my hard drive. On all occassions after those two instances I can never restore back to any restore point. It always says that "unspecified error" line. If Microsoft doesn't know what happend, how could I. Why did they bother putting system restore if it doesn't work all the time anyway. It gives you a false sense of security.
View 5 Replies View RelatedAfter installing SP2, on 5/25, System Restore seems to have stopped creating automatic restore points every 24 hours. I checked the Task Manger and it is set for 24 hours. It shows a restore point being created on 5/26. System Restore shows the last Restore Point being created on 5/25 about 1 hour after downloading.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a recent problem installing Windows updates on Vista Ultimate as the update process stays on 'creating restore point' forever. I've let it run as long as 7 hours in this state, with no change. It looks like the system is unable to make a restore point sucessfully. I know it has worked in the past, as I'm fairly up-to-date on Windows updates. Reading some other threads, I've tried using Disk Clean-up to remove all by the most recent restore points, and then try to disable/re-enable system restore - this part without success. When I check the system properties for System Restore, the System Restore button is greyed out. I've attached a screenshot of the screen for reference. I've checked the group policies to verify the System Restore is not disabled there.

That little window disappeared but then nothing hasppened. I was expecting to see a list of possible restore points but nothing showed on my screen. I clicked system restore again and got a message that system restore was already running and would now exit.

As it is restoring Norton sees the virus and removes it from my system but Norton can not see the virus inside the restore files. Right now my system is fine (virus wise) but I need to restore from an earlier restore point because I deleted some files and now my cd/dvd drive is not recognized. But like I said, I can not restore do to the fact that I have a virus buried inside my restore files. I could care less about the virus in the restore files, my main goal is to get my cd/dvd drive working again so I can install my business software.

View 7 Replies View RelatedThe mystery, at least to me, my PC was running almost 2 years. and it was not until about 3 weeks ago that System Restore began to save Restore Points the size of Approx 3 to 4GB daily. Prior to that the Restore Points were well under 1GB. it would be 3 to 6 days before I noticed the loss of 1GB. So why suddenly would the Restore File grew 1 one day from well under 1GB to between 3 to 4GB? That now is the issue I would like to know the answer to. and perhaps that file being saved with each Restore Point is not needed. I mean it wasn't needed for almost 2 years. so I can't think over night it became important but it sure is eating up HDD space.
View 5 Replies View RelatedWhen I try to boot windows I get the black Windows Error Recovery screen with the options to Launch Startup Repair or Start Windows Normally. If I select start windows normally the systems quickly restarts and takes me right back to that screen. If I select Startup Repair, I get the blue screen of death, "A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer". Even trying to use the boot options, launching startup repair still gets the blue screen, safe mode still just restarts and takes me back to the beginning. All of this started sometime last night when the computer must have installed updates and then tried to restart itself because I walked out this morning to the blue screen. Any suggestions? I do not have any sort of disk for the computer, its an HP. I am writing this from another computer, as I obviously cannot make the problem computer start at all.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have an issue with my current vista installation of Ultimate SP1 x64 and my Hiyatek 7 port powered usb 2.0-hub. I've been looking for similar problem and solutions but so far neither of them have worked.
The problem is that randomly all usb-devices connected to it will fail and to get windows to recognize them again I need to unplug and reconnect the power and/or USB-cable to the hub. (It's quiet the anoyance to do this and watch while vista takes its time to find your newly connected devices as your party in the game is dying from lack of healing)...............
My attempts at putting the "approved" SP1 over the SP1RC1 (evaluation copy 6001) fails. Tells me already installed although I still have the "Windows Vista T Evaluation Copy. Build 6001" above the clock. System Info tells me I have "Service Pack 1, v.668". If 668 is the proper version, then how do I remove the "evaluation copy message from the desktop -- or how do I flag the system to accept the full SP.

I have a small network with 4 pcs. 1 is Vista 64, two XP Pro and 1 W2K. Peer
to Peer. All machines could see the other machines shares without problem.
The net browser is the W2K machine.
I had to change the chassis of 1 XP Pro box because of heating. everything
was phisically moved to another chassis, no OS change watsoever, nor
component changes. Now, both XPs and the W2K can see shares in each other
normally, as before, and they even can see shares on the Vista box.
But the Vista started behaving in a wierd manner:
Vista to W2K: sees shares normally
Vista to WXP Pro not modified Sees shares normally
Vista to WXP Pro with new chassis: The XP does not recognize the vista User
and Password. I tried as Administrator, as user, changed passwords in both
XP and Vista, created a New user in both machines with and without password,
and still the XP refuses to recognize the Vista credentials.
I am using Windows Vista Home Premium 32-Bit. I keep getting Error Code 8007000B downloading windows updates. I tried going to the command prompt, running as an admin and typing in "fsutil resource setautoreset true C:" and reboot but I still cannot download updates.

I agreed in return for a free copy to upgrade to Ultimate. They sent me both 64bit and 32bit versions. In trying to upgre to Ult32bit, my lappy grts half way through the upgrade and fails with no explanition given. I cintacted MS and found I had to unistall Vista SP1, upgrade and then re=install SP1. I tried this and the upgrade still fails.

Vista was late, nearly two years late and that equates to a big financial penalty. Companies and major corporations pay millions every year to Microsoft in volume licencing and subscription fees. For this they expect a regular development cycle, about every three years. Simply put they didn’t get it. Thus the pressure was on Microsoft to deliver and clearly they panicked and rushed Vista out the door without proper testing.
Hang on a minute! I hear you cry, the beta programme for Windows Vista lasted a year and a half and took in about half a million testers!! You compare that to the beta for Windows 7 that only took six months and had only 5,000 testers.
Windows Vista was an experiment, a version 1.0 product. It was essentially a brand new operating system as Microsoft were trying out new systems. But there was an awful lot of legacy code built into that and the resulting mish-mash made Vista the dog that it was. Source -

I tried the push update of SP1 and it failed and I tried the downloaded SP1 and it failed with the usual error codes. I wnet through KB947366 and actually got the long install but it failed in pass 3. My other system had no problems and is at SP2. Both vista systems have nearly the same applications and both are domain members.

1. Why do the file or program that I know for sure I deleted, but is still there although it is an empty file. I right clicked it>delete and it says can not be found. It won't let me delete. It doesn't take up any disk space but it bothers me that it is still there. How do I get rid of it?
2. I have many files that are empty in my appdatalocal emp location. Most of them I don't even know what they are. I never downloaded them. Quite a few of them are empty files. Can I delete them?
I am trying to upgrade to Windows 7, but am having problems with uninstalling things that need to be. The installer/uninstaller fails either when it tries to open the wizard or just after the wizard opens. I trying to install the windows installer cleanup, but that wouldn't install either. I have tried FRevo Uninstaller and CCcleaner, but they can't get it down either.
