The "open with" command disappeared completely from my file context menu.
The fact is that I cannot have alternate choices of opening media files or any files, cause the command is not there!
So please, if anyone knows, tell me the default command line to edit on my registry...or otherwise please provide me the appropriate solution.
My OS is Vista Home Premium 32 bit.
I'm having some problems with third party software and was hoping using system restoring would hep but it didn't.
I've also notice that I no longer have the Search command in the context menu when I right click a folder in explorer.
I was testing Vista for one year and at the end I am going back to the XP. I not interested in appearance. The system should work and I do not care if it have transparent windows or not. It have to be fast and have all function I had in former System (Windows XP in my case) What am I lacking in Vista:
1.No search i context menu
2.No drag and drop to command prompt
3.No folder backup (ntbackup)
4 Eating more than 1GB ram
5 More clicking to get to the same properties
Can any of you tell me why should I stay with Vista? It is your last chance to convinced me.
Can someone explain to me how to create a new right-click menu option for like windows explorer, or to modify one. I have Open with Notepad++, and i would like to modify it to Open with xxx.

Do you use notepad very frequently to open all types of text files? This quick tweak will add "Open with Notepad" to all of your file context menus. Whenever you right click on a file, you will have the option to open it in Notepad.
Copy and paste the code below into Notepad. Then save it as a .reg file and import it by clicking on it....
shed any light on why my hibenation option has completley disapeared i think it disapeared when sp1 was downloaded through auto updates but cannot be sure that is the cause
View 4 Replies View RelatedAppologies in advance if I'm being too long winded or not providing enough detail (1st post). I'm running Vista Home Premium 32bit (sp2) on an HP Pavillion dv6700 laptop. The issue I'm having is that the "XP style" File menu bar keeps randomly opening up and then closing whenever I have any Office product, IE, or the explorer open. I've never "turned on" this option so no clue why this started to do this a little over a week ago. Initailly I found that it got worse (more frequently opening/closing the menu bar) when I had my external hard drives (EHDs) connected but at this point it's near constant without them connected and it's locking up the programs so that I can't type or click on anything.
I've not installed any new software in months; and the only downloads I've taken/installed were files from trusted sites and several system updates. My 1st impression was either a virus or a system update conflict from either or both HP or Windows; the latter has not been an uncommon issue. My anitvirus is up-to-date & a complete scan turned up nothing, even on my EHDs. I've gone back twice using the restore points; the 2nd time going back over 2 weeks prior to the start of this issue. I'm out of ideas short of doing a complete reinstall from my back-up partition.

View 3 Replies View RelatedWith Windows XP the context menu would fly out to the left or the right, depending on how close it was to either the left or right side of the screen. in my VHP 32bit OS, for some reason, the context menus such as Send to, MagicISO, and Open With tend to favor flying out (opening) the left, unless the context menu is envoked on the extreme far left of the screen, then they fly out to the right side of the menu as usual. So for instance, if I right click on something in the exact middle of the screen, and choose Send To, the menu flys out (opens) to the left of Send To instead of following the direction of the Send To -> (arrow) which is on the right. This happens even when right clicking on the desktop itself, it just seems to favor the left. Anyone know the registry key where to adjust the direction sensing of the context menu? Or at least so it would favor the right instead of the left?

View 7 Replies View RelatedInstalled SP1, now when I right click on any folder in windows explorer, the search option is missing from the context menu? Tried all my drives and a bunch of
different folders, still no search. I enabled Windows Search service again, had it disabled since it eats to many resources, still no search. Pre-SP1 of course did not do this.
Why does it take so long for the context menu to come up when I right click? Is there something I can do to speed it up?

Does anyone know how to re-order it? As far as I can tell, it's completely willy-nilly. It even seems to change from right-click to right-click. (Right-click on a few different folders. You'll see the same menu items, but sometimes the order will change for no apparent reason.)

There use to be an option when you right click a v2i file on the windows explorer, this option said Mount and I think there was a Open option too. The one I really need is the Mount one. View 5 Replies View RelatedRecently I've noticed that when I right click on certain files or the desktop, that it would load the context menu after about 1 second. I know this isn't much but it should not take that long for something that small. I went ahead and removed many items from the context menu and the desktop and all other files load the context menu almost instantly. My problem is that .exe files still take 1-2 seconds to load their context menu. I tried removing almost ALL the options in the context menu.

With my current settings [where?], if I select and click on Edit, MS Windows Paint opens as the Default Editing Program. I don't like Paint at all, and want to change from that current Default Program, to allow my Pictures to be opened and edited by Picasa. Is there a method by which I can change that Context Menu, so that by clicking on Edit, the selected thumbnail automatically opens in Picasa And before anyone leaps in and suggests any other editing program from the plethora of others available [eg. Photoshop etc.], please don't waste your time - I'm not interested in them, as Picasa fulfills all of my basic photo editing requirements. View 4 Replies View RelatedRecently most of the programs in my Start Menu disappeared. Almost everything that disappeared is Microsoft related, like Office. When I rebooted it said that explorer.exe and sprtcmd.exe in the C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms directory is corrupt and I should run chkdsk. However, chkdsk won't run. I set it to run on reboot but it never does. Then I tried using sfc /scannow but it only got to 71% before saying it can't continue. I tried going into the Programs folder but it says the directory is corrupt or unreadable. I've got Vista Home Premium, and my computer is a Dell XPS M1530.

I realize when you delete a File, the File Pointer is the only thing erased, the file data remains on the drive. This is a sensitive file and I would like to know if there is away to completely erase the file so its not recoverable (I don't want to Reformat my drive....just want to remove the Erased file)

I have no idea how I lost it, but it was there when I first got my computer (Vaio, running Vista Home Premium). I now have to go to Help & Support to get access to it. I use the Advanced Search facility, so I can't just open up any folder. Does anyone know how to pin it back onto the Start Menu? I've even tried going to Open Taskbar & Start Menu properties and selecting Use Default Settings on the Start tab - no luck!
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm running Vista Home Premium (6.0.6001--sp 1). Since installing Checkpoint VPN client, the Switch User option has disappeared from my shutdown menu. (I've since deinstalled the VPN.) I've read elsewhere that it might be a group-settings issue, and it can be toggled by using the group administration panel. This was for Vista Ultimate, though; trying to run "gpedit.msc" fails with a "not found" error. Is there another way to alter this? Perhaps by hacking the registry? My wife and I switch fairly often between our profiles, so I would like to have the option.
View 6 Replies View RelatedWindows Vista has a new search bar located on the Start Panel. You can use the new search box to find items in the various folders of your Start Menu as well as run any application from it. Just type in the name of the executable and it will search your hard drive for it and run it. This is a great feature but if you have a lot of files on your computer, then be prepared for a short delay since it may have to search for a while.
If you do not want to wait that long, there is a quick way to get the old Run command back on your Start Panel....
i deleted some files from a folder to the recycle bin. it let me empty them out of the recyle bin too. they are still showing if i do a search for them. i won't let me completely delete them. i can't find any other program they running in to prevent me from completely deleting them. i don't know what i can do. its just stuff downloaded off the web nothing licensed!
