I got a new gateway laptop with vista, it came with a user name installed (New Owner) and I don't know how to change it. New Owner, is the Username I get when I hit Ctrl+Alt+Del, when I try to change it it says "the user name or password is incorrect".
I have a HP Pavillion Elite d5200t and like an idiot I just installed an update from MicroSoft for Relteck today that has killed my sound. My windows media player has no sound but if you go to sound in control panel the realtek is OK and the bar is going up and down but I get no sound out of my speakers. Everything was working OK before this update. Has anyone run into this yet and if so what was the fix? Forgot to add and I'm using Vista Home Premium SP2 64 bit. Creative sound card is working OK. I rolled back the driver, but that didn't help.
I bought an Laptop with Vista Home Premium 32bit. If I install a FULL version of Windows 7 on this Laptop, can I use the Vista Home Premium 32bit key from the laptop on one of my other desktops? If so, would I talk to Microsoft or the manufacturer to get a disk without all the manufacturer "Bonus" software?
Would you like the change the registered owner and organization for your Windows Vista installation? Follow these steps below to make the registry changes necessary: ...
I designed my own directory structure in windows xp and used it as a template for software and file management on vista. (seems to have been a big mistake). Currently i have all my games installed just on a Games folder, created by me in the Program-Files folder. Steam needs to write its own config file for any edits i make, However when trying to do this is just reverts back to prior settings. (As with other games). I tried removing the read-only flag from the attributes looked like it had done, closed and re-opened window and sure enough its back again. NB: im logged onto a user account, set in Administrators Group, created by myself.
I then tried Security > Advanced > Owner > Edit to change from SYSTEM to Jamie (my username) After that, i also went to Security > Edit (To Change Permissions) > Add - Added Jamie as a user and set to full control. However still i cannot change from Read-only for all subfolders also. So to save me the hassle, as i never seem to get malicious software anyway... how do i disable this whole, lets be safe and wear a condom crap that microsoft have put into this somewhat good but REALLY annoyingwhenitdoesntwork operating system.) Im Running Windows Vista Ultimate x64.
i have trouble with the security settings of the registry. There are some keys in HKLM and HKCR which don't have the correct permissions. When i try to take the owner ship as Administrator i get the nie message that some of the subkeys can't taken over from the owner ship, also some installations even as administrator report registry problems. Is there any way to set the registry security settings to the default values?
you put your real name or ur nickname on the registered user of the windows, u noe when u click on computer, press alt, then help, then about windows....
I accidently orphaned the Owner profile. I have no way of accessing the account. I do have another Admin logon that I am using. Is there a way to assign a new user to the orphaned Owner profile, or do I need to create a new user and set up everything again?
I purchased my HP from a big computer store with Vista home installed on it. It was an out of the box sale (I thought I could avoid a wait for the comptuer I wanted). The company that sold it to me was listed as the administrator. The old owner took off their password before I took possession of the computer I purchased. I followed instructions on how to put on a password to start the computer. However, there are dozens of fiels named after the previous administrator. I tried to find out how to change the administrator globally to my name. There is still an administrator account name and it appears the previous administrator is still above my permission status - even though i am the computer owner, don't think I am the ultimate administrator yet. I read that not being able to use screen print was a result of not being the administrator. I can't make the screen print work either. I assume some members have dealt with these matters before. I directing me to some good "how to fix" information.
I have McAfee SiteAdvisor on my pc and have a technical issue When I click on "are you the owner of this site?" it gives me the option to create a "Request Verification File" which I have done. It has my website url together with a code Now it says: Create a file with this exact filename in the root Web directory on the Web server of the site you are claiming to own. How do I do this? What do I have to do so McAfee knows it is my site?
there must be many people who have moved all their mail from XP on one laptop to Vista mail on a new laptop. These two computers can see each other on the network. How can I easily move all history, contacts, folders etc from one to the other?
I have two folders on my computer right now that both say I do not have privileges to access or delete even after escilating my privileges with UAC. Is there any way I can fix these folders? The claim to have a "undisplayable owner" and I cannot get myself or admin to be the owner.
I m using vista x64 home premium and when i try to shut down my computer it looks like it is turning off then it starts windows again. Anyone had the same problem or know what to do ?
I have a Gateway MT6452 laptop connected to a LG 32LC2D HDTV with SVGA cable. Followed installation instructions and connection works for about five seconds before screen begins flashing and TV disconnects displaying "invalid signal". Software problem, hardware problem, or stupid human installer problem?!
I've done a lot of searching tonight so I know I'm not the first one to have this issue, but I haven't found any kind of satisfactory solution. Here is my situation:
I have an HP Pavilion 6716 laptop with Quanta 30CC 79.26 mother board with a bus clock of 533 Mhz. I currently have two DDR2 PC2-5300 1 GB sticks of RAM in the machine (from factory) and all is well. I confirmed with HP that my machine can handle 4GB so I got two DDR2 667 2GB sticks of RAM (Kingston). If I put either one of the new sticks of RAM in I have no problems (first or second slot, makes no difference). But if i put both in I get the BSOD and first a PFN_LIST_CORRUPT error, then a reboot and then a IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error and that's all she wrote. Put back the original RAM and all is well. I've read all about the MS KB929777 and I've uninstalled the patch then re-installed and it made no difference. Is there anything anyone can tell me or am I just shafted at 2GB RAM?
I have this laptop. When the laptop is at Idle the CPU ranges from 60% to 100% is this normal for this type of laptop? Is there any way that I can resduce the CPU usage that Vista is using I have closed down unessecery programs that I dont need.

i haven't mentioned this since i have reinstalled vista, but i have noticed that, since then, the windows experience index scores have gone down 1 or 2 points. i have installed all the latest drivers using drivermax but little performance has been improved. and it seems that the gaming graphics have let me down on wei. also, the second lowest score on wei is the aero performance. it is 4.0 on the aero because i have recently changed the theme to windows classic for better performance. i have changed back to aero, and haven't bothered the update the wei score. here is a snip of the wei score right now-. i remember the score being up in the 5's but now, it is down. just wondering if it was to do with reinstalling vista by any chance? i'm not asking for a solution-but you can give me one if u can- just want to know what is causing the laggyness. look at my system specs to see why i think my computer should have better performance.
i'm running Vista Home Premium on my laptop, 2 gb ram & it freezes. It freezes more often when left alone for 10-20min. Sometimes when moving the mouse it freezes. Task mgr. will not open so i have to shut down system. At times i get a error message & my hd is being scanned.
But I just want to be sure that selling it unformatted would be safe. For instance, I am planning on making a new admin account on the computer, and from there I am going to delete the CURRENT admin account which I'm using now, by going to control panel > users/accounts > (admin account name) > Delete (would you like to keep account files? Answer: No).
And the buyer who will recieve the laptop will have access to the newly created account, and there will be no other account on the computer besides maybe the guest account (and another wierd Admin account that is somehow above all and I never used before) and I would have deleted this account via the control panel....am I safe after having done this? Meaning can the buyer still somehow recover private information (saved passwords, files, etc.) after I've deleted my account?
Reason I'm asking is, this computer already has the Dell drivers and downloads installed to make it as good as it is...and if I format with a Windows Vista CD, everything will be lost and I have to re-download drivers etc. It just makes the computer more valuable when selling.
Acer Extensa 5220, Intel Celeron Processor 530 I tried to upgrade the OS from XP to Windows Vista. It was low of memory so I started deleting some unneeded files. But after that when I restarted the laptop I had an option F2 or F12. I tried both of them, but without access. When I put the XP cd it shows me NO BOOTABLE PARTITON ON TABLE. After that I can only turn off the laptop and do the same thing again and again. Please tell me how can I re-boot my laptop. All my important documents are on D drive, so I don't mind to clean all C drive and start all over, just how can I re-boot the laptop?
I got a Sharp TV, 32" LC32GP3U-B (1080p full). I connected an hdmi cable from my laptop (also 1080p full) to the TV. My laptop screen dropped to Vista Basic theme in 16bit color mode and I can bring it back up to 32bit. Why is that? Inside my Nvidia control panel I was unable to change color depth. I cannot view on the TV display if I use single or clone mode. Everytime I try to set it to single or clone mode, it reverts to laptop display instead. Why?
A strange problem, when configuring Media Center, I chose TV as output. Now the color, contrast, gamma, etc is perfect on the TV itself and Media Center interface. However, when viewing the test videos to adjust the settings, the video is nearly black, dim, yet the interface to Media Center is perfect, so is viewing regular TV mode (w/o hdmi to the laptop) and even when HDMI is plugged in, quality is superb when using programs displayed on the TV. I did choose hdmi as connection type in MC, but why is the video so dim?.........
I have a Dell XPS M1530 and recently it has stopped going into sleep mode. Whenever I try to put my laptop to sleep its pretty much like it "restarts." I hear the 2 clicks from the cd drive and then after login all of my programs are booting up again.I have already checked the power settings in the control panel. Mylaptop is set to go to sleep when the lid is closed on both battery and ac.
Additionally, my laptop goes to sleep whenever I manually use "Fn + F1" and when I press "start - sleep." Has anyone had this problem before? How did you fix it?
I am not sure if this is the appropriate place to ask this, but here we go I just bought a new Laptop, All is great, It is a HP Pavillion DV9000. I have noticed the CPU Noise is alot louder than those of Toshiba ie. Is there a way to lower this sound?
I'm running Vista x64 Ultimate on a new Dell XPS 1330. I have set the laptop lid power option to "do nothing" (as I've always done). Whenever I close the laptop lid, however, it looks like the machine attempts to suspend, then it reboots and comes back with the "Windows has recovered from a mighty serious error" message. I've searched and searched and not found any answer to this. All my drivers are up to date, I've WindowsUpdated, and I have no oddball hardware etc.
I bought a new Toshiba laptop while I was in the states and got it home here in the UK to find that it already has an ID and password on it. How do I clear all accounts and set it up with me as the administrator?
i just got a new vista laptop and i have connected to my home router when i first got it. the next day i couldnt connect at all (well) it says im connected, with full bars but i cant seem to be able to browse the internet or get any kind of internet connectivity. i've search and tried the the whole disabling QoA and IPv6, but that doesnt work, neither does uninstalling or repairing the wifi driver thing.
