My PC Shuts Down By Itself

Jun 26, 2009

my pc started to shutdown by itself about two days ago.. it's a self-built with Intel Core2Quad Q6600, 4 GB Kingston 800 MHz RAM, nVIDIA 8500 GT, 320 GB WD SATA HDD, and ASUS P5K MB

i don't know the reason, but the night before it happened i detached the fan to clean it then re-attached it again "appropiately" and turned the pc on and it worked, and i did a deep system scan using trail version of BitDefender Total Security 2009 "which ends tomorrow btw" and i slept, and when i woke up the next day it was done and i read the report and all was good!

i turned it off, and by noon when i started it again, the problem appeared, and it started shuttingdown by itself since then..

i am writing this post while i am on SafeMode, and it's working on safemode and didn't shutdown in half an hour now ...

Boots Up Shuts Down

Jun 14, 2008

My windows xp that I have had for about 2 years suddenly started to shut down and restart on its own. Out of the blue, over and over. Boots up shuts down, Boots up shuts down. I use it for my business payroll and bill paying. When I do get it to stay on for a couple minutes I have to restart my active desk top. I have tried defrag and cleaning it up. Checked all my plugs and tried everything I can think of.

Randomly Shuts Off

Feb 19, 2008

My computer has started shutting off randomly within 5 mins of startup. By shutting off, I mean it just turns off...no BSOD, no errors, just turns off...at random intervals that are usually within five mins. I updated my display drivers a few days ago, and they're currently at the highest version, but it's been a few days, and this just started this morning. It seems to be fine in safe mode (which I'm in now to post this)...which leads me to think it is, in fact, display drivers...but they're up to date, I have no solution there...now what?

PC Shuts Off At Random

Mar 23, 2008

My computer just powers off wothout warning sometimes then won't turn on again for several minutes. The computer hasn't been overheating or even under heavy load when it happens. Which piece of hardware is the cause of my trouble so that I can replace it? The motherboard is an ABIT IS7, the PSU is a Coolmax 450W, and the CPU is a 2.8GHz P4 Northwood. Or is the problem with something else?

Shuts Down Unexpectedly

Jun 7, 2008

I'm running Vista Home Premium on an HP dv9000 laptop. A couple of weeks ago, my laptop decided to shut down on its own. No error message, no blue screen... it just shut down. It does not restart. It will not start again for two or three minutes after it first shuts itself down. At first, I thought it was a problem with a game (The Sims 2), and maybe my graphics card (an nVidia GeForce 8800, IIRC). Then, it started doing it at other times, sometimes when I was just surfing the internet. I can give more information about my system upon request.

Never Shuts Down Properly

Aug 11, 2009

We recently brought a laptop with Vista Home and have had on going issues with it not shutting down. Everytime we hit shut down it goes to the logging off screen but never actually makes it. We have left it running over night and come down the next morning and its still "logging off"! We have tried the Ctrl Alt Del combination to see whats causing the issues but the task manager doesnt load up. This has been an ongoing issue for about 3 weeks and have probably only had the laptop for a month.

Forceably switching it off, which we have to, causes the safety mode prompt to come on at the next start up. If we do not run the safety mode we arent able to use the internet as it doesnt connect. So, running it in safety mode is the only way to get things back to normal. I should add that when I start up in safety mode it goes to a black screen eventually with "safety mode" written in each corner. Ive no idea how to move away from this so just hit the main off button but we can get back on the net when it reboots.

Having read a few issues with shutting down it doesnt appear that anyone has the ongoing issue we do and as mentioned Ctrl Alt Del does nothing. On the rare occasion we have got it to shut down properly it reverts the next time. We run McAfee anti virus and as a fairly new laptop there isnt much that we have downloaded since purchase. I also have a desktop and never experienced this ongoing issue!

Vista Shuts Down Abruptly

May 15, 2010

Iīm looking for some opinions about this issue Iīm getting. Recently I got as a present a vista ultimate desktop which previously hadnīt given any troubles to itīs owner. So I brought the pc home and started using it without a problem, but after one day the computer starts shutting down on me. No error screens, nothing, it just shuts down. It doesnt restart or anything, all of the sudden it goes blank. I can turn it on again, it boots and I can use it for a while and again it shuts down. I have left it on all night and it didnt turn off, but it seems to happen when I am using it. Thereīs no pattern here, it might happen at any moment, without any logical trigger. I opened the tower to check the fans and they are both working well. I downloaded a soft called everest to monitor fan and cpu temps, and both the motherboard and processors remain usually between 50 and 60 degrees celsius and the fan remains around 2800 rpm.

I have no idea whats going on and canīt seem to find any conclusive solution on the net or asking friends. I am certain this didnīt happen before I brought the computer home, but I also did a system restore to a date previous to when I brought it to make sure it is not software related and the problem persist. The computer didnīt suffer any hit or impact on the way here. I am at loss, the pc works flawlessly and I am thrilled to use it, but as long as this problem persist I have to continue using my old crappy laptop.

Windows Shuts Down Unexpectedly

May 2, 2008

Windows shuts down unexpectedly. Is there a way to pinpoint the cause based on the logs and errors that Vista produces? I have read at least a half dozen reasons suggested for this type of occurrence in general and wonder if there is information being captured by the system that can help pinpoint the cause for my specific case.

Problem Reports and Solutons / View Problem History shows 11 instances of this, 7 today at approximately 1/2 hour intervals and one 5 days ago, one 6 days ago and two 7 days ago. It says: Windows / Shut Down Unexpectedly / (date & time) Solution Available. However whenever connected to Microsoft site it never comes back with any solution. Computer Sometimes Unexpectedly Shuts Off?

Apr 9, 2008

There are two times when I have noticed it stopping for a reason. Other times I do not know why it shuts off. Once it stopped after I had a flash drive in the USB port. I did the proper procedure for "safely removing" it, but the computer still shut off when I took the drive out. Another time the computer more or less went to sleep. I was able to restart the computer without it rebooting. I wonder if there is some way to set the time for it to do this.

System Shuts Down When IDLE

Jul 21, 2008

From time to time my system (Vista64) shuts down - when IDLE - for no reason. WIndows restarts and says: Windows recovered for an unexpected shutdown... error report send. How to debug? Note that the system is idle; only background processes are running.

What I've done sofar:
- Ran extended memory test: no problem
- Disabled power saving settings (as I suspected a problem going into hibernate/sleep). No effect.
- Disabled all "user based processes" as Picasa, Google indexing, CPU-temp watcher etc..
- Removed all USB sticks (no readyboost anymore)

I leave the system idle and 10minutes to 2hours later; bang; shutdown Note also that the system never chrashed when I'm actually working. So, not a severe issue but I feel intellectually challenged to get the thing under control.

I chose that and the computer shut down again. I switched on again and this time Vista loaded and everything was ok. Apart from installing daily important Window Vista updates, I haven't changed anything on the system.

Virus Shuts Down Every 59 Seconds!

Jan 18, 2010

I got her a Compaq Presario V2000 (Windoz XP Professional). It has been serving her needs quite well. But now she calls and says it shuts down every 59 seconds so she hasn't time to run any of its programs like antivirus or IE to connect to web to run maybe LiveOne scan or others. She has asked me to mail her a CD that will be self-booting and contain a good antivirus (and I would say, something like Malwarebyte too) on it, that will run and clean up her computer so she can use it again.

(After that, i need to talk to her more about protective programs for the machine....) She is of the opinion that the infective agent may be "worm.win32.nightshade or something like that." Quoting her. This Could possible be a form of the netsky virus, I can't be sure. At any event, I tried to shop for a curative CD for her problemo. All the CD's I could find contained very old antivirus programs (with three years or older virus definitions ....and most do not even say they remove those viruses..they talk only about "scanning for viruses" whereas we need a scan and a REMOVAL, that is a real antivirus program that works.... with current uptodate viral defintions. And a good malware type additive. Can anyone recommend any such CD, or else any other means she may be able to restore functionality?

PC Shuts Down Due To Trojan Virus

May 10, 2010

I know is it seems to be shutting itself down when it has just started up due to it having a virus of some sort, a trojan was mentioned. Can someone recommend what the best course of action is in this particular case? I suggested that if the OS (Vista) is accessible then reformatting the HD may be the best thing to do. But will this get rid of the virus/trojan as well? I am aware that this will involve losing all data. I'm led to believe rather than have the original discs, PC's these days come with a seperate partition which holds the OS, which is used when reformatting is required? How do I reformat the HD from here?

When i was in safe mode a pop up told me the system needed to restart and when it did it went back to the normal veiw out of safe mode but when i shut it down to try again it didnt work in regular mode only in safe mode again. Now it wont even work in safe mode. I try to enter safe mode and the list of commands starts running down the screen. It stops and then goes into the repair function again which will not work,. I am not able to get past and i would like to know what i should do or whetherthe hard drive is dead. In safe made there were also errors with microsoft programs opening and they would not open. After Upgrade Over WinXPsp3 :error That Shuts Down

May 31, 2008

I just upgraded to Vista Ultimate for work related reasons. The thing is most everything runs but when I open I text file in notepad then right click to select all or what ever before the context menu comes up I get an error that shuts down what ever program I was running. This also occurs in Sidebar, Task manager, and just about every exe that is part of windows. Third party apps don't seem to be affected (that i can remember anyway) Jest now I ran Paint to paste a screen shot and went edit>paste but as soon as I opened the edit menu Crash! so i tried Paint.net same thing.

I then right clicked the paint.net short cut and hit "run as Administrator" and I could paste the screen shot into a file no sweat. The account is a local admin account that I am logged into at the moment. so I really do not understand. the same with the windows sidebar and a few other apps if I right click anywhere in them they crash then I right6 click the shortcut and run as admin and they work. I even tried going into the properties of Windows sidebar shortcut in the star menu clicking properties>shortcut>advanced>and checking Run as Administrator but Still get the crashes when I first reboot Vista until I specifically Start it by Right clicking and hitting Run as Administrator........
