Installing Updates And Shuts Down Computer

Mar 11, 2010

It has the little <!> showing down by the shutdown button on the start menu, saying "Installs updates and shuts down your computer." I did that. Then I did it again. And again.

Three reboots, still wants me to update. I have done the updates. Now what? I read once the trick was to disable the UAC setting. That did nothing. I get no error message. It boots up normally..then <!> comes back again.

Computer Shuts Down: Run CHKDSK /F And Check For Hard Drive Corruption And Then Restart Your Computer"

Sep 30, 2009

Before the computer actually came to the point of "shuting down just before it tried to load the o/s" it literrly kept shuting down on its own randomly for a week or so. Then the blue screen appeard with this error: 0x0000007BC , 0x84C5DBA0, 0x0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000 "Run CHKDSK /F and check for Hard Drive Corruption and then restart your computer"

Basically it's telling me the DRIVE is corruptet! Well, I plugged that SATA 2 HDD into my other computer (windows xp), detected it correctly and actually formated the drive and reinstalled XP on it without any types of problem. Does it still mean - SATA 2 is corrupted or broken!? How about the RAM then ... indeed, I did run the MemTest for 7 times and no errors were found. So the RAM are ok in this case, or am I wrong?! Maybe it's the PSU... ermmm no that cannot be 'cos the computer never shuts down, if I leave it run for (e.g 5 hours) and even if it's comes to "overheating" that cannot be the case eather, as its *again" never shuts down when you leave it run on the power.........

Reboot Computer Through Windows The Computer Shuts Down Correctly

Jun 16, 2009

When I reboot my computer through Windows the computer shuts down correctly, but then the monitor remains black and the bios starts beeping out the error code for "VGA not detected". Why would this be? I am forced to press the power button and wait from 5 to 10 minutes to reboot normally. (I'm using Windows Vista Ultimate x64, have an ASUS P6T Deluxe motherboard and a Gigabyte Geforce GTX 280. 800 watts ZION power supply) Is this a BIOS settings or GPU problem? I already reseated the GPU. Could it be a power supply failure?

Computer Sometimes Unexpectedly Shuts Off?

Apr 9, 2008

There are two times when I have noticed it stopping for a reason. Other times I do not know why it shuts off. Once it stopped after I had a flash drive in the USB port. I did the proper procedure for "safely removing" it, but the computer still shut off when I took the drive out. Another time the computer more or less went to sleep. I was able to restart the computer without it rebooting. I wonder if there is some way to set the time for it to do this.

Computer Shuts Down At Start-Up

Mar 23, 2008

I have a new Acer Aspire computer running on Windows Vista. I've had it set up for a week now, running every day without any problems. Today, I switched on the computer and before Vista loaded, the computer shut down on its own. I tried again and this time got a screen asking if I want to run a start-up diagnostic. I chose that and the computer shut down again. I switched on again and this time Vista loaded and everything was ok. Apart from installing daily important Window Vista updates, I haven't changed anything on the system.

Computer Shuts Down With No Warning, Then Restarts

May 24, 2008

I am using Vista Ultimate and am on a fairly new computer, does anyone know what is causing this? I've ruled out overheating and energy problems. I set windows to not automatically restart and give me a blue screen on crashing, but it still shuts down and restarts with no warning. Is this a hardware issue? It's done this since I've gotten the computer but it seems to be getting worse now.

Ultimate Will Not Boot Up After Installing Updates

Nov 23, 2009

I installed Windows Vista Ultimate on several machines without incident. Yesterday I installed it onto my desktop. A Gateway that was previously running Win XP I had backed up my hard drive to an external becuase I wanted to do a clean setup. I chose those uptions as they appeared in the setup screen. The os set up fine. I then ran Windows Update. AFter everything downloaded I let the system install the 87 updates. The computer shyt down. I restaeted it and re-ran updates again. After downloading it installed about 7 more updates and shut down. Now when I turn on the machine. I get the "Splash Screen" tehn a black screen and in the top left corner it says: Booting "Windows Vista".....

That hangs for about two minutes then I get a screen that says Setup is inspecting your hardware configuration. Then a screen that says: The file ARFSPK0N could not be found Press any key to continue. I press a key and I get a Setup Failed and it just basically goes back to the beginning. I have tried installing the Original XP setup disc that came with my computer however it reads it then I get a message saying that Drive "R" could not be read and then my CD drive door opens. There is no disc in that drive as the setup disk is a DVD so it is in the DVD drive. I went into the whole setup screen and chnaged the boot order but nothing seems to work.

Stuck On Installing Updates And Rebooting

I've been facing the following problem, - actually i'm not been able to solve it - with the last Vista update the system has rebooted and says it is installing updates and reboot and says it is installing updates and goes like that for ever. I can't get the hand on it. Is there a way to solve it without restoring everything but maybe only the system or the boot part ?

I decided to uninstall them; and the performance seemed to be back to normal. My question is: Are these updates really necessary for my PC; do I absolutely need them?

System Lost Sound After Installing Updates

May 3, 2010

Sometimes, after installing MS updates or other apps, I lose my sound. The only way I get it back is to use System Restore to a point where the sound worked. However, then I don't have the updates or apps. This tells me that it's a software problem with Vista - not a hardware problem. Now, I am about 11 MS updates behind - and no sound. Also, the System Restore doesn't work anymore (I no longer have a Restore point where the sound worked). I've Googled and have found that many people have similar problems with their HP laptops. I am using Vista, SP-2. I am now going to ionstall the updates since I can't go back to get the sound. I've checked in Device Manager (no problem) and made sure I'm using the most recent signed driver. I can't find any text indication that I have a problem but when I go to Playback Options and try the sound Test, I get a message which says the sound didn't play. Hope I included all the relevant information. If not, please tell me. I've tried everything I know of. I have a full backup of my hard drive

Reboot Installing Updates: Some Program Not Working

Mar 7, 2008

I don't know how it's possible, but it happened.. Must be some new feature they never advertised, but should!!The other day, Vista (Ultimate 64) was nagging me to reboot after installing some updates.. I kept putting it off but finally it wouldn't let me put it off for as long. In any event, I walked away to get some lunch and when I got back, my PC had been rebooted. I logged back in and things looked like it was starting up normally..But then I see down my taskbar, that I have three programs still open!! I'm like WTF? How is this possible?!?! They were: Outlook, an Unsent/Saved Draft of an email, and another Email which was just open. My web browser windows, and multiple tabs, were all gone though..OR WERE THEY!? I opened IE7 to begin getting my desktop back in order and get my email tabs all opened up, when suddenly I saw that IE7 had all my tabs in it as soon as it loaded!! I could not believe this!!

What's REALLY weird, and I think is confirmation that something had happened, was that I now had 4 tabs in one IE7 instance, whereas before I had two instances of IE7 (cascaded horizontally on my 22" widescreen displays) each with 2 tabs - one set was for email and one was for forums I frequent. But now, IE7 loaded up and I had all 4 of these COMBINED into a single IE7 instance (which btw, I'm trying to figure out how to move tabs from one IE7 instance to another, but there doesn't seem to be a way!)..In any event, I can not believe it still, thus I'm posting this here to see if anyone else has encountered this..If you don't believe me (even I will try this again), go and install some updates (not like SP1 but some basic updates), then wait to let it reboot and see what happens!!

Access To 64-Bit Computer Updates

Jul 29, 2009

I recently installed a Windows Vista 64-bit HP Pavilion CPU, and I checked for windows updates several times the day of installation. It took me two more days to find out the hard way that I needed two available updates, one for IE8 on Vista 64-bit and an SP-2 for 64-bit as well. I wonder why I had to work so hard to find out about these updates, why the ordinary Windows Update feature did not work as expected for me. For the future, where do I need to go to check for Vista 64-bit updates? Alas, another assumption bite the dust: The Windows Update page reliably tells you what you need to know about updating Windows.

Installing On Someone Else Computer

Mar 10, 2009

I know I can only have one registered copy and that's on my computer but is it possible to have a working Vista on a friend's computer but without having to register it? I have the upgrade version of home premium SP1. I remember reading that it's possible to install Vista without registering for a certain amount of time and that the time can be extended. I figure they can't use windows update but I think the Vista HP SP1 by itself is rather stable regardless. I was going to have them use the Windows 7 Beta but it can't be downloaded anymore from Microsoft's site and I don't want to use torrents. They'd have bought Vista themselves by now but with a kid on the way and moving, they can't shell out the dough right now and their comp is acting up.

Computer Locking Up And Not Installing

Aug 15, 2008

My friend bought a new computer a few months ago that came with Vista installed. It also came with a bunch of other programs (bloatware) installed. I uninstalled all the stuff she didn't want, which included Norton AV, and replaced that particular program with AntiVir, which I have used and liked for years. She doesn't use the computer for much except playing pre-installed card games and reading email, and she didn't install anything except her Kodak printer. I installed the Comodo firewall, but that didn't work well for her, so when Zone Alarm released a Vista-compatible version, I uninstalled Comodo and installed ZA.

She began telling me the computer was freezing up from time to time. Then it began freezing up regularly. Now it is freezing up so badly that she can't even play her games. I reviewed the event log and found errors involving Windows Error Reporting service, and warnings about the printer. I turned off the error reporting and unplugged the printer. The problem persisted..............

Installing Win 7 Same Computer Twice Separate Partitions

Nov 13, 2009

xAorKZKHA.1592@TK2MSFTNGP06.phx.gbl> I wanted to try Win7 without losing Vista, so I installed it on a separate partition to dual boot.So I have Vista on C: and Win 7 on G: - same disk, different partitions. A boot menu was set up, but Win 7 boots by default if I don't choose Vista instead.I now want to move towards Win 7 on C:, and return to just one partition. But I have quite a lot of software and shortcuts now set up on G:, and if I were to delete C:, change G: to C: I'd have to start uninstalling and reinstalling everything so that C: was referenced. by everything. I'd rather install Win 7 onto c:, and gradually install software again, whilst being able to continue booting into Win 7 on G; to carry on working as needed. So, if I were to install Win 7 again onto the C: partition, either by doing an upgrade, or formatting C: and doing a fresh install,

a) would that cause any activation/legal problems, having Win 7 installed on the same computer twice in separate partitions
b) if it was OK to do that, which installation would become the default boot option.

6 Important Updates As Of 03.12.2010, Hide The Updates

Desktop PC will be one year next month. I did not renew the Microsoft Office after trial period that came as a package w/ no future intention of acquiring it. I'm using the free Open Office program - word processing mostly at this time. Is there anything in the list below that is of importance? I only have a basic PC with DVD player for movies, etc. No scanner, printer or fax. Not even external hard drive or usb flash drive. Otherwise, I understand that I can just choose to hide the updates, so it will not keep reminding me. Also, I choose to keep my OS w/ Srvce pk 1 and MS IE version 7 for as long as I'll be able to. I had too many probs with Srvce pk 2 and MS IE version 8. Your opinion, if any, is welcome.......

My PC Shuts Down By Itself

Jun 26, 2009

my pc started to shutdown by itself about two days ago.. it's a self-built with Intel Core2Quad Q6600, 4 GB Kingston 800 MHz RAM, nVIDIA 8500 GT, 320 GB WD SATA HDD, and ASUS P5K MB

i don't know the reason, but the night before it happened i detached the fan to clean it then re-attached it again "appropiately" and turned the pc on and it worked, and i did a deep system scan using trail version of BitDefender Total Security 2009 "which ends tomorrow btw" and i slept, and when i woke up the next day it was done and i read the report and all was good!

i turned it off, and by noon when i started it again, the problem appeared, and it started shuttingdown by itself since then..

i am writing this post while i am on SafeMode, and it's working on safemode and didn't shutdown in half an hour now ...
