Updates From One Computer To Another...is This Possible?

Sep 3, 2008

Is it possible to acquire Vista Updates from one computer and transfer these to another one? The reason I ask is because my Vista machine only has a dial-up connection, but my work machine has broadband. So, can I 'grab' the updates on my work machine, save them to a USB or ext. hard-drive and transfer/install on my home machine?

Access To 64-Bit Computer Updates

Jul 29, 2009

I recently installed a Windows Vista 64-bit HP Pavilion CPU, and I checked for windows updates several times the day of installation. It took me two more days to find out the hard way that I needed two available updates, one for IE8 on Vista 64-bit and an SP-2 for 64-bit as well. I wonder why I had to work so hard to find out about these updates, why the ordinary Windows Update feature did not work as expected for me. For the future, where do I need to go to check for Vista 64-bit updates? Alas, another assumption bite the dust: The Windows Update page reliably tells you what you need to know about updating Windows.

Installing Updates And Shuts Down Computer

Mar 11, 2010

It has the little <!> showing down by the shutdown button on the start menu, saying "Installs updates and shuts down your computer." I did that. Then I did it again. And again.

Three reboots, still wants me to update. I have done the updates. Now what? I read once the trick was to disable the UAC setting. That did nothing. I get no error message. It boots up normally..then <!> comes back again.

Updates And Rebooted The Computer Many Times.

Mar 26, 2008

It came installed with vista home premium but yesterday i bought the vista ultimate upgrade dvd. I inserted the dvd and upgraded as per instructions. It was completed without any problems.I've installed all important updates and rebooted the computer many times.

Now my laptop runs really slow, takes a longer time to boot up -about 3 or 4 mins now. In my sidebar i have a CPU meter and usually both cores run at less than 50 percent but now it jumps around 90-100%?? The graph looks like a lie detector when charles manson answered no to the question if he killed anyone?!

6 Important Updates As Of 03.12.2010, Hide The Updates

Mar 11, 2010

Desktop PC will be one year next month. I did not renew the Microsoft Office after trial period that came as a package w/ no future intention of acquiring it. I'm using the free Open Office program - word processing mostly at this time. Is there anything in the list below that is of importance? I only have a basic PC with DVD player for movies, etc. No scanner, printer or fax. Not even external hard drive or usb flash drive. Otherwise, I understand that I can just choose to hide the updates, so it will not keep reminding me. Also, I choose to keep my OS w/ Srvce pk 1 and MS IE version 7 for as long as I'll be able to. I had too many probs with Srvce pk 2 and MS IE version 8. Your opinion, if any, is welcome.......

Computer Shuts Down: Run CHKDSK /F And Check For Hard Drive Corruption And Then Restart Your Computer"

Sep 30, 2009

Before the computer actually came to the point of "shuting down just before it tried to load the o/s" it literrly kept shuting down on its own randomly for a week or so. Then the blue screen appeard with this error: 0x0000007BC , 0x84C5DBA0, 0x0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000 "Run CHKDSK /F and check for Hard Drive Corruption and then restart your computer"

Basically it's telling me the DRIVE is corruptet! Well, I plugged that SATA 2 HDD into my other computer (windows xp), detected it correctly and actually formated the drive and reinstalled XP on it without any types of problem. Does it still mean - SATA 2 is corrupted or broken!? How about the RAM then ... indeed, I did run the MemTest for 7 times and no errors were found. So the RAM are ok in this case, or am I wrong?! Maybe it's the PSU... ermmm no that cannot be 'cos the computer never shuts down, if I leave it run for (e.g 5 hours) and even if it's comes to "overheating" that cannot be the case eather, as its *again" never shuts down when you leave it run on the power.........

Reboot Computer Through Windows The Computer Shuts Down Correctly

Jun 16, 2009

When I reboot my computer through Windows the computer shuts down correctly, but then the monitor remains black and the bios starts beeping out the error code for "VGA not detected". Why would this be? I am forced to press the power button and wait from 5 to 10 minutes to reboot normally. (I'm using Windows Vista Ultimate x64, have an ASUS P6T Deluxe motherboard and a Gigabyte Geforce GTX 280. 800 watts ZION power supply) Is this a BIOS settings or GPU problem? I already reseated the GPU. Could it be a power supply failure?

Importing/exporting Contacts From One Computer To Second Computer

Using both methods, I was able to import my contacts into my second computer but they weren't neatly organized in files: i.e. business contacts, personal contacts, family, etc. Is there a way to export my contacts so they are still in the correct files and are neatly organized?

XP Computer Disappears And Reappears Arbitrarily From Computer

Jul 29, 2009

I have a Vista Laptop that needs to access a printer on an XP computer in my sister's law office. I'm having trouble trying to even have the XP computer show up consistently on my sister's computer. I can ping it every time from the command prompt. I have all firewalls unenabled on both computers. Identical user accounts on both systems. File and Print sharing set up on both. The Link Layer topology is present on the Vista computer. When the laptop sits for a while the XP computer will show up on the map; but, Vista comes up with an error message when I try to access the XP computer.

Beyond that, the map will lose the XP computer on occassion. The Vista computer can access the internet well enough through the router. At this point I can't install the printer on the Vista computer for not being able to access the XP computer from Vista. I've networked Vista computers before on XP networks, and this is the first time I've encountered this problem. Additional info; net view will not show xp computer. Workgroup name is the same for both XP and Vista computer. The restrict anonymous registry key on the XP computer is set at 1. Was originally set at 0. (Norton's Systemwork altered setting)

UAC Locked Me Out Of Computer, How To Salvage This Computer

Dec 11, 2009

I have a problem: I have a Windows 7 computer that is part of a Domain. By using System Restore, Windows has managed to ruin the trust relationship with the domain. I use a domain logon and am the only administrator on the machine (the Local Administrator is disabled). I cannot log in normally, due to the trust relationship issue. If I disconnect the network cable while logging in, I can (cached credentials), however I cannot change any UAC-protected settings because if I enter my credentials into it, connected to the network or not, UAC will simply show an error "This operation requires elevation". Nothing I try will work.

I cannot disjoin the domain, because those controls are protected by UAC. Logging in from a remote machine using my credentials will give me "Access is denied". Resetting the computer account in AD has no effect. I cannot format and reinstall because this laptop does not boot from CD by default and requires me to install a program to change BIOS settings (don't ask, it's a Toshiba, the usual way is broken). I cannot install this program because I am faced with yet another UAC prompt. I cannot remove the harddrive because of the laptop's design. how to salvage this computer?

Computer To Computer Networking Not Working

Oct 27, 2009

I have been searching far and wide for a solution to my networking problem. I have 2 computers that i connect directly to each other by ethernet cable. Both computers also connect to the internet via wifi. So, on each computer, I have my Wireless connection, and the 'unidentified network' link between the two computers. The problem is that the 'unidentified network' settings never save, so when ever i restart either of the computers, I have to make the unidentified network private again, and there is no way that i can see to actually save the unidentified network settings in a profile. Also, to prevent the computer to computer connection from broadcasting over the wifi connection, i have to disconnect the wireless from one of the computers. I have tried making the wifi a public network and the ethernet connection private, but it never seems to work. anyone out there know what i can do?

Why Updates?

Mar 23, 2010

I looked at my recent updates and was astonished that there are 96 of them.

It seems to me that software that has 96 problems shouldn't be available for sale.

Each time I download a new update my system gets a little more crappy.

Its a lot like selling you a junk car that doesnt work and then giving you the parts one at a time to try and get it running properly.

More Updates?

Jan 4, 2009

I was kind of hoping this would let up for a while.

In my previous post
Having trouble deciding which updates to install , I was having issues with my computer freezing after installing some updates. I found out that not all the updates that Windows tells me about actually apply to my computer. The issues are now resolved and I have even downloaded SP1 withouut issues! (Imagine the Snoopy happy dance here)
This morning, 5 more updates appeared. I have my computer set to tell me about them, but not download til I tell it to. I have looked them up on the Microsoft website, but wanted to ask advice before I go ahead and install and put my foot in again...
They are:
4 updates for Windows Vista, 3 important, 1 recommended
KB951978-the website says this one is for XP SP3?
KB952709-improves reliability
KB955302-I have seen some posts on other forums describing issues installing this
KB957200-reliabiliy (not much more info than that)
and
KB 940157 Windows Search 4D for vista. Recommended.

Will Not Run Updates

Vista Home Basic. Trying to check for updates comes up with error 0x8007051a. The link provided does not include this error number. Each boot shows a "Configuring Updates" message. An immediate reboot after successful log on shows the same message. I have done a full System Recovery to rebuild the OS but it gives the same error. Naturally trying to install SP1 fails too. Updates Failing

Apr 4, 2010

A Windows update could not be installed (Error Code 42D9):

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 3

So, I downloaded it from:

Download details: SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP3

I installed it, but the update was still showing and it still wanted to install the update - but I thought that's what I just did manually! Why did it still want to install it?

I hid the update from the Windows Update screen.

The next day, two updates came in - security updates for:
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 and
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2

The update for Service Pack 3 installed successfully but the update for Service Pack 2 failed (Error Code 733F).

I hid the Service Pack 2 update, but it keeps coming back!

What am I supposed to do?

Hot To Control Updates

May 10, 2008

I have Vista Ultimate installed on a laptop. The onboard audio uses Sountek as the driver but Vista keeps installing Realtek AC'97 as the driver for it. The realtek driver puts my audio into a situation where I get the red 'X' bu the speaker in the taskbak, along with something about 'No audio device is installed'. When I einstall the Soundtek drivers, the audio comes back and works fine. Windows update has installed the Realtek drivers about 5-6 times in the last week and it is time consuming to keep reverting it back to a functional state. Is there a fix to keep this from happening in the future?

Speaking Of Updates

Apr 10, 2008

I checked windows update (as I've been doing once daily to see if SP1 has been offered yet [no cigar]) and looked at my update history and found that two updates have downloaded and installed without my knowledge. I checked my settings again just to be sure and found the settings still set to "download, but let me choose whether to install." How did those two updates just miraculously install and I didn't do it? So, I went one further and changed the setting to "notify me when their are new updates, but let me decide to download & update." I think it's haunted.

Failed Updates

Dec 23, 2009

I'm trying to update Vista Home Premium, on a laptop I have just purchased.

Everything seems to have gone fine, apart from several updates which have failed.

Some of the failed updates are:

Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (KB948465)
Update for Windows Live Sign-In Assistant (KB967912)
Security Update For Windows Vista (KB967723)
Security Update For Windows Vista (KB970710)

In total there are 43 failed updates, the majority of which are listed as "Important". So, my question is how do I get these installed? I've followed the troubleshooting tips but can't find any help here. I've searched online, but nothing seems to help here either.

Back Up Updates?

Apr 9, 2010

Maybe this is a dumb question, I don't know. I reformat my computer about twice a year to keep things ship shape and one of the most annoying things about it is getting back all the windows / microsoft updates. Is it possible to back up all the updates you have on your computer to speed things up?

Also, if I have Vista SP1 as my install disk, and have SP2 saved to a disk can I just go ahead and put SP2 on right away or do you have to get all the little in between updates that came out before SP2?

Starting Up After Updates

Dec 13, 2008

Earlier today my computer had updates to intall so i clicked to install updates and shut down. This evening when I went to turn on my computer it said that iy had to run disk chk as it did this it said that file after file was corrupt and repairing this took a few minutes. After this the normal log in screnn appeared. I clicked on my name typed in my password then the screen went black and the pop up went as follows

Windows Activation
Reinstall Windows
Windows must be reinstalled to activate. Insert the windows installation DVD or CD into your computerto begin the reinstallation process.

I placed the cd in and nothing happened. I then started in safe mode and tried a system restore, but then I found I have no system restore points anymore. I tried to start with last known good start up but the same message appeared. I do not want to have to do a clean install as I have important work on my computer which isn't backed up.

No Reboot After Updates

May 3, 2008

I have had this issue for many months, now. I loaded Vista x64 Home Premium to run in a dual-boot configuration with my XP Pro. I do critical work so I didn't trust going to Vista exclusively. I mainly wanted it to see if I could utilize all my RAM and speed up Photoshop processing. I have had it working three or four times, (except for tablet functionality) then when I must re-boot because of SP1 and other security updates or in one case, I installed Office 2007, it does nothing on restart; black screens and just sits there, totally unresponsive.

No blinking of the LED which shows drive activity. When re-booting, F8 isn't working (nothing happens). Regarding the previous instances, I gave up trying to get it to respond and went back to booting into XP, which always works fine. Then after a period (usually a month or more) I will try booting into Vista, on restart, and viola, it works again! WTF is going on?

Pre Sp1 Updates Missing

May 20, 2008

I am having some trouble getting to download sp1 for Vista to my home computer running Vista Home Premium. First, various microsoft articles say I should first have updates 950127, 935509 and 949939. My update history shows other prescribed updates, but not these. My windows Update app does not say I need them. In fact, my Windows update app does not say that sp1 is available. I checked article 948343, but find none of the explanations for this omission to match anything in my computers history.

Lastly, when I find the download article for sp1, it has a huge 5 language version, and says that it should not be used for single computers. I cannot find a single computer version of SP1 to download. At this point, I am afraid to download the 5 language version. Can someone advise me how to solve the Windows Update problem, and straighten me out about thos pre-requisite updates?
