IE Only Connect To Secure Websites

Apr 20, 2009

I am running windows vista with a wireless connection to the internet. I am unable to surf the web, but surprisingly enough I am able to view secure web sites only. Running IE to access the web. I am at quite a loss here. I have tried disabling firewalls and the like and still no internet. What is strange is that the computer shows that I am fully connected to the internet. Signal strength is good.

Cannot Connect To Internet Via Wireless Secure Network

Mar 23, 2008

I have 3 computers in home: 1 is connected via Ethernet to DSL and D-Link wireless router, and is running Vista Home Premium. I can connect to Internet fine on 1.

2 is on my wireless network running XP. It connects to Internet just fine.

3 runs Vista Home Premium, but I cannot connect to the Internet. You can see the wireless network with a strong signal, but the connection is Local. If I remove WPA and make the network unsecured, I can connect to the Internet. If I plug in an Ethernet cable in this computer and into a port on the router, I can connect to the Internet. I checked ipconfig and it shows for the wireless network that there is no default gateway, and the user ID does not show like it does when I run ipconfig with the network unsecured.

IE7 In Business: "Could Not Connect To Eh Secure Web Server

Mar 23, 2008

we have Vista 32 bit installed at my office. We use it for software testing with different O/S and browser configuration purposes only. But I am having a problem browsing internet using IE7. That is in my company whenever we launch any browser we go to one of our secure web server there we enter a useid and password then we get connected to internet. But IE7 is not laucnhing this secure web site. I am getting a message"Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage". However if I
launch Mozilla then It prompts me to enter the userid, password(which is actually the company id , password given to all associates) then it authenticates us then takes us to the itnernet. Now after doing this step at Mozilla browser my IE7 works. that means In IE7 there is soemthing that is blocking us to go this website. Also when I type this url in IE7 by myself I am getting this error "Could not connect to eh secure Web server".

Secure Superowner Above Admin

Feb 5, 2009

I need to get something straight with the underlying security layers or ermisisions of vista (ultimate). I have created a group SUPERUSER in which I have added my admin user account (NOTE, not administrator but another account with Administrative privileges, i.e. is part of group Administrators).

I have only added this one account to the superuser, and NOT the administrator. Now... This is because I wish that the superuser has a folder lets say where not even the other administrators can access! Question is this: Should I add SYSTEM as well as SuperUser (both with full rights) and remove ALL OTHER GROUPS to this folder.........

Uninstall F-secure Program

Jan 11, 2010

A friend of mine has installed F-secure anti-virus program on his computer and now he wants to change it to other because.. well it pretty much sucks a lot. It slows down incredibly the machine, and it's with good parameters. So he asked me for help. The installation was long time ago so System Restore is not an option. I know a lot of people have big problems trying to uninstall F-secure. That's why I uninstalled it using Your Uninstaller in the most aggressive way of uninstall. When I tried to install the new one - ESET Smart Security, it showed me a message that F-secure is detected and it should be removed first.

I checked in Program Files and saw F-secure folder with 400 MB info in it. It couldn't be deleted so I went to Safe Mode with Command Prompt and managed to delete the folder. The same message "F-Secure detected". I checked and it's in several other places all over the Windows Folder and Program Data folder... Also it's in so many places in the registry. I don't know how to remove it. Every time i try to delete file in the explorer it shows me that I don't have the permission, and if I try to delete something in the registry it shows me error that it cannot be done or something (yes, i had made back up of the registry(

ALERT: Disk Encryption May Not Be Secure Enough

Mar 23, 2008

You may have already heard about or read about this story. If so, this is not for you. For those people in positions where privacy can mean the life or death of a career or even a person, listen up. "Computer scientists have discovered a novel way to bypass the encryption used in programs like Microsoft's BitLocker and Apple's FileVault and then view the contents of supposedly secure files.

In a paper (PDF) published Thursday that could prompt a rethinking of how to protect sensitive data, the researchers describe how they can extract the contents of a computer's memory and discover the secret encryption key used to scramble files. (I tested these claims by giving them a MacBook with FileVault; here's a slideshow.)

"There seems to be no easy remedy for these vulnerabilities," the researchers say. "Simple software changes are likely to be ineffective; hardware changes are possible but will require time and expense; and today's Trusted Computing technologies appear to be of little help because they cannot protect keys that are already in memory. The risk seems highest for laptops, which are often taken out in public in states that are vulnerable to our attacks. These risks imply that disk encryption on laptops may do less good than widely believed.

Secure Browsing Over Public Networks

Dec 7, 2009

When using a public Wi-Fi hotspot or any public network the security and privacy of your data is at risk. Most wireless hotspots do not use any type of encryption which means all your traffic is sent in plain text through the air. Anyone with wireless sniffing tools, which are easily to use and find online, can capture all traffic broadcast between your computer and the access point (AP). Any Web sites you visit and anything submitted on a form such as you e-mail address or contact information that is not protected with HTTPS/SSL can easily be harvested.

The same is true for most public wired networks that you plug your computer into. While it is not as easy, a network administrator can view all traffic that is not protected with HTTPS/SSL and identify exactly what you are doing on the Internet....

Does Not Allow Access To Certain Websites

Dec 3, 2008

I’m currently running Windows Vista Ultima 32bit on a Dell Inspiron D530. My problem is I can’t access certain websites i.e. www.linkedin.com the browser will search forever and not find the site or if it does find the site, usually after 15-20min it doesn’t display the page correctly. I don’t think it’s a browser issue (Internet Explorer), the same problem occurs on Safari as well. I have gone thru all the IE7’s and firewall settings, including the virus detector (Trend Micro) nothing seems to work.

I’ve contacted my internet provider (Verizon) and Microsoft to no avail… no one seems to understand why I’m having this issue. I also have two laptops running XP and I don’t have this issue on the laptops Also, if I ping the website it seems to send and receive packets correctly.

Switched back to unsecured and hooked right up. Disabled firewall, the only thing running is McAfee Total Protection, no firewalls.

Certain Websites Not Displaying Correctly In X64

Apr 4, 2008

Today, I was forced to use my Vista Ultimate installation disc to reinstall Vista - since yesterday morning, my computer was not able to get out of a loop (first going to Windows Error Recovery and then, when selecting any of the options, going to the green loading bar, where it the green bar stopped moving about 2/3 of the way, and going back to Windows Error Recovery).

The installation went smoothly enough, but I am absolutely clueless how to get my computer to roughly the same conditions it was before this fiasco. Fortunately, it would appear that all of my files and folders from before this re-installation have been saved in the folder Windows.old. However, I am at a complete loss as to how to reconfigure my Internet connection, how to restore my previous screen resolution (there are now only three options for resolution under Display Settings), and essentially getting the basics back in order.

Trouble Accessing Websites.

Feb 1, 2010

I haven't been able to access the following sites on my laptop. Descriptions of the problems is included.

-Tumblr (Since October of 2009)

Cant access the site on my laptop. I can on my desktop though.

-Myspace (Since June of 2009)

I cant access the site. With a proxy yes. I crashed my desktop previously by use of a proxy so I really would like to not use one again.

-Facebook (Since Mid-January of 2009)

My inability to access face book has been a reoccurring cyclical problem for me, and it tends to dissapear for three weeks, then reappear for one. This problem was present on my desktop before I got my laptop.

-----

My laptop is a HP Pavilion dv6 with Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit.

My desktop is Windows XP (crashed twice)

I am not an obsessive user of the sites listed above. I use them to keep in contact with family and old friends.

I am the administrator on my laptop, and the only one who uses it.

My virus protection software is the newest version of Norton.

YES I have tried deleting the cache and cookies in my browsers, turning off the firewall, and tried command prompt and received no error messages. There are no blocked sites on my laptop.

I have tried Google Chrome, Safari, IE 7&8, and Firefox. NOTHING WORKS.

The error message that I receive is either unknown error, or "[insert browser] cannot access this webpage]".

Laptop Does Not Load Websites

Jun 8, 2008

I currently have an Acer Aspire 5100-5728 laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium installed on it. After very many months of usage with no problems pertaining to the internet, I am suddenly met with an inability to load internet websites in an acceptable time. Other programs such as Pidgin (Instant Messaging client) and uTorrent (BitTorrent client) that use the internet work flawlessly; my download/upload and data transfer speeds are not affected at all, and according to the Network and Sharing Center, I am connected.Anything in the browser bar, including my router setup, or the IP addresses of websites, take anywhere from three to ten minutes to load; sometimes they just fail to load entirely.this includes low-content pages such as Google, Bash.org, and various other websites. I've tried both Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer, and the problem is consistent. However, the problem is only specific to my machine; I am currently typing this up on my parents'Acer Aspire, connected to the same network, and websites load with no problem.

I've tried the following:
-Rebooting the machine
-Resetting the modem
-Unplugging the router
-Changing router settings
-Resetting the network settings
-Using wireless/wired
-Flushing the DNS
-Clearing the browser cache

I've also checked the Acer website, and it doesn't seem that there are any driver updates or anything of the sort.I can speculate that the problem is not with my ISP or any of the networking hardware. The various other computers in my house (running Windows Vista, Windows XP, and Ubuntu) all have full connectivity; it is only one Vista
laptop that has this problem.

Internet Connects, Not To Websites

Jun 20, 2009

I have Vista Home Edition Premium 64x. I has worked fine for two months. Just recently, I cannot use the internet or play online games. I primarily use wireless but use DSL. I am able to see wi-fi networks and connect (DSL shows a connection too), but unable to load any web pages. I uninstalled Norton. Dropped all the firewalls for Windows. But still, I cannot load any web pages. WOW cannot connect. Bittorrent cannot connect. Firefox or IE cannot either. I searched all over Vista (I'm new to it) and found no settings that would makes sense to adjust for the problem. I looked at these forums and found no solutions to similar problems (Are these people trashing their Vista?).

I finally had to partition the drive and install Suse Linux 11.1 to just get to this site try to find an answer. Being that Linux has no problem with wi-fi or DSL and loading web pages, I know it's not a bios or hardware problem. I know it's Vista. What is wrong with Vista, because I never changed any network settings while using it? Is there a way to restore the network part of the Vista package without having to purchase Vista again? Vista came installed so I dont' have a instal disk. All my restore points seemed to be corrupted with this problem. What can I do?

Certain Websites/webpages Which Refuse To Load Up

Jul 11, 2009

To summerise - My internet connection seems largely fine however the are certain websites/webpages which refuse to load up. It just says waiting to connect before eventually coming up with the same message you'd get when you have no internet connection. 90% of websites are fine but the 10% includes some websites i need to get on which is rather frustrating! There seems to be no correlation between the type of sites that wont work. Some examples are Microsoft Corporation , Car Insurance, Home Insurance, Travel Insurance & Credit Cards from Tesco Finance & Insurance , Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test to name just a few...

I don't believe it's actually a computer problem as my laptop (which is new) cant connect to these sites either through my home wireless network but if i connect to the internet through a friends wireless internet the sites load no problem! I dont believe its a firewall problem or anything like that as i've tried diabling them and pretty much everything else i could think of. .........

Unable To Access Websites Using My IE7 Web Browser

Apr 7, 2009

This is getting very desperate for me. My problem is i am unable to access websites using my IE7 web browser. Things i have tried so far, run malware and deleted the results, run CCCleaner and deleted the results, run Anti Virus - there does not seem to be a virus on the machine although it displayed a comment on the system toolbar that there was a w32.zaposhopping virus on machine.

I am able to ping my router and go beyond that by pinging an DNS server 4.2.2.2 with successfully results so i know that there is nothing wrong witheither. I have reset IE7 explorer, i have deleted all tmp files, cookies etc.

I am able to access Google BUT it seems no other sites - I am at my wits end as to what to do next. I am very experienced with computer and work in the industury but not come across anything like this before.

Internet Explorer Certain Websites Won't Load

Sep 17, 2009

I'm new to Vista. I have just connected my new laptop with Vista to my home network (XP). No dramas. But when browsing the internet (IE7), certain websites won't load (eg Apple, Ninemsn, Microsoft). Eventually it displays "Internet Explorer can't display the webpage". When you diagnose connection problems - it finds no problem.

I have tried turning off firewalls (Vista), uninstalling my AV (NOD32), disabling Vista's autotuning (which booted my brothers computer off the network, but did nothing to mine). I have tried to browse through Morzilla Firefox (but i can't load the website to download it!) and have tried disabling ADD ONs in IE. None of these change anything!
