Aug 31, 2009

Vista comes with 2 versions of IE 32 bit and 64 bit right so why does the 64 bit version have no problem going on secure sites and yet 32 bit version refuses to do so normally it would not bother me but my Itunes is using the 32 bit version to go to the store (ithink) and i can not sign on to the store to get my music and yes before anyone suggests i have enabled SSL and TTL !

Secure Superowner Above Admin

Feb 5, 2009

I need to get something straight with the underlying security layers or ermisisions of vista (ultimate). I have created a group SUPERUSER in which I have added my admin user account (NOTE, not administrator but another account with Administrative privileges, i.e. is part of group Administrators).

I have only added this one account to the superuser, and NOT the administrator. Now... This is because I wish that the superuser has a folder lets say where not even the other administrators can access! Question is this: Should I add SYSTEM as well as SuperUser (both with full rights) and remove ALL OTHER GROUPS to this folder.........

I am at quite a loss here. I have tried disabling firewalls and the like and still no internet. What is strange is that the computer shows that I am fully connected to the internet. Signal strength is good.

Uninstall F-secure Program

Jan 11, 2010

A friend of mine has installed F-secure anti-virus program on his computer and now he wants to change it to other because.. well it pretty much sucks a lot. It slows down incredibly the machine, and it's with good parameters. So he asked me for help. The installation was long time ago so System Restore is not an option. I know a lot of people have big problems trying to uninstall F-secure. That's why I uninstalled it using Your Uninstaller in the most aggressive way of uninstall. When I tried to install the new one - ESET Smart Security, it showed me a message that F-secure is detected and it should be removed first.

I checked in Program Files and saw F-secure folder with 400 MB info in it. It couldn't be deleted so I went to Safe Mode with Command Prompt and managed to delete the folder. The same message "F-Secure detected". I checked and it's in several other places all over the Windows Folder and Program Data folder... Also it's in so many places in the registry. I don't know how to remove it. Every time i try to delete file in the explorer it shows me that I don't have the permission, and if I try to delete something in the registry it shows me error that it cannot be done or something (yes, i had made back up of the registry(

ALERT: Disk Encryption May Not Be Secure Enough

Mar 23, 2008

You may have already heard about or read about this story. If so, this is not for you. For those people in positions where privacy can mean the life or death of a career or even a person, listen up. "Computer scientists have discovered a novel way to bypass the encryption used in programs like Microsoft's BitLocker and Apple's FileVault and then view the contents of supposedly secure files.

In a paper (PDF) published Thursday that could prompt a rethinking of how to protect sensitive data, the researchers describe how they can extract the contents of a computer's memory and discover the secret encryption key used to scramble files. (I tested these claims by giving them a MacBook with FileVault; here's a slideshow.)

"There seems to be no easy remedy for these vulnerabilities," the researchers say. "Simple software changes are likely to be ineffective; hardware changes are possible but will require time and expense; and today's Trusted Computing technologies appear to be of little help because they cannot protect keys that are already in memory. The risk seems highest for laptops, which are often taken out in public in states that are vulnerable to our attacks. These risks imply that disk encryption on laptops may do less good than widely believed.

Secure Browsing Over Public Networks

Dec 7, 2009

When using a public Wi-Fi hotspot or any public network the security and privacy of your data is at risk. Most wireless hotspots do not use any type of encryption which means all your traffic is sent in plain text through the air. Anyone with wireless sniffing tools, which are easily to use and find online, can capture all traffic broadcast between your computer and the access point (AP). Any Web sites you visit and anything submitted on a form such as you e-mail address or contact information that is not protected with HTTPS/SSL can easily be harvested.

The same is true for most public wired networks that you plug your computer into. While it is not as easy, a network administrator can view all traffic that is not protected with HTTPS/SSL and identify exactly what you are doing on the Internet....

Cannot Connect To Internet Via Wireless Secure Network

Mar 23, 2008

I have 3 computers in home: 1 is connected via Ethernet to DSL and D-Link wireless router, and is running Vista Home Premium. I can connect to Internet fine on 1.

2 is on my wireless network running XP. It connects to Internet just fine.

3 runs Vista Home Premium, but I cannot connect to the Internet. You can see the wireless network with a strong signal, but the connection is Local. If I remove WPA and make the network unsecured, I can connect to the Internet. If I plug in an Ethernet cable in this computer and into a port on the router, I can connect to the Internet. I checked ipconfig and it shows for the wireless network that there is no default gateway, and the user ID does not show like it does when I run ipconfig with the network unsecured.

Can Change Existing Registry Entries & Add New Entries To Make Vista More Secure?

Mar 14, 2009

I have a laptop with Home Premium. I'm thinking about upgrading to Ultimate. I have some questions. Home Premium doesn't have any policy editors. I know that I can change existing Registry entries & add new entries to make Vista more secure. When one makes a change to a policy editor, in what file is the change stored? Or is it stored in the Registry? If policy editor changes are stored in the Registry, then one really doesn't need to upgrade to Ultimate or have a PC with Ultimate. So, ultimately (no pun intended) can one use the Registry to make Home Premium as secure as (or possibly more secure than) Ultimate & achieve the same results as one who has Ultimate?

Windows Update Kills Windows Mail On Windows 7

May 12, 2010

If you have installed Windows Mail on a Windows 7 computer, yesterday's update contains a KB978542 patch which changes msoe.dll so it won't run on Windows 7. I had warned about these types of issues when Win7 was first released. Microsoft claims it was done for security=20 reasons, see To get it working again, replace the new non-working copy of msoe.dll in Windows 7 with a copy of the new patched version of msoe.dll from a Vista machine.=20

Note: I ran into permissions issues when trying to delete the = non-working msoe.dll, so rather than fighting that, I renamed the Win7 Windows Mail directory to "Windows Mail-X", then I copied and pasted the Windows Mail directory from the Vista machine. I suspect that Windows Mail will = become less and less compatible with Win7 as time goes along.=20

The Recommended Updates Was KB940157: Windows Search 4.0 For Windows Vista For X64-systems (11,8MB).

Aug 19, 2008

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit edition Dutch Version, updated with SP1 and all the patches/updates until today. However, I have encountered two problems lately, that might be related. During one of the last Windows update sessions, one of the recommended updates was KB940157: Windows Search 4.0 for Windows Vista for x64-systems (11,8MB).

The update downloaded succesfully, created a restore point, but then during installation of Search 4.0, windows update stops and announces an update fail error:

Failed: 1 update
Errorcode: 800F0900

I've been googling this particular error code in combination with KB940157, but it doesn't bring up any entries. Then later on, I discovered that when I go into the Windows Components window (via Control Panel, Add/remove software), the entire windows stays blank (first it says "Wait a few moments..."). This only lasts a few seconds then shows a complete empty window.

Unable To Open Attachments In Windows Mail: Windows Cannot Find File Name

Jul 29, 2009

There are discussions on this general subject but no aparent resolution. About two months ago I was sometimes prevented from opening photo attachments on some emails received from the same party and sometimes could open them. By this I mean, I would click on the paperclip where a list of photos would appear and I'd click on on photo and I'd get a message saying: "Windows cannot find file name (photo captions used by sender).jpg. Make sure your typed the name correctly and then try again." Well, of course I didn't type the file name; the sender did. I could click on the save attachments, and once saved to a folder I could open them from the folder. I forwarded the mail to others, and they report no problems in viewing the photos. I can also view the photos in the email itself, but it would be necessary to scan up and down and from left to right to view the whold photo and the caption would not appear.

Managed To Corrupt: Windows Defender, Windows Picture Viewer....

Nov 22, 2007

I have been using Vista Ultimate x64 for the last 5 months and have to say it's been a massive learing curve due to its fragility - 4 full rebuilds in the last 4 months - and not much fun when using SATA RAID. Anyway, got up yesterday morning, turned on the computer and it had managed to corrupt itself yet again: Windows Defender, Windows Picture Viewer and a host of desktop icons refused to find their pathways home and so decided against a full rebuild and started the repair option with a boot to the DVD. I set this off running and went to work at 12:30pm...

I came back 5 hours later and still had the dialog box " Finalising Registry" running on my screen! Well, a quick restart and i tried the upgrade option once back in Vista from the DVD. This then took and unbelievable 7 hours to complete and was finally ready - after updates - at 01:20am this morning, but a full clean install would have taken about 1-2 hours to finish, so i'll be doing that in future!.........

Windows Could Not Start The Windows Audio Service On Local Computer

Jan 3, 2009

My speaker icon in the taskbar has a red cross on it. When I hover my mouse over it, it says "The audio service is not running", if I right click it I get 3 options

1. Playback devices
2. Recording devices
3. Sounds

I went to my start menu and searched services.msc and checked to see if plug and play, windows audio endpoint builder, and multimedia class scheduler were all set to startup type automatic & all started. they were. so then i go to Windows Audio, right click to properties, and it is stopped. So i click to start it and it says "Windows could not start the Windows Audio service on Local Computer. Error 1079: The account specified for this service is different from the account specified for other services running in the same process."

I tried to restore my computer but my restore point is past the point when this issue originated. Also, Conexant Driver is installed and working properly. If I right click on the volume icon with a little red X through it... I can click on Open Volume Mixer, and It says "No Audio Device Installed" Yet, my audio devices are installed.

Windows Easy Transfer :: Outlook Express To Windows Mail

Jun 13, 2008

I've just upgraded to a new pc with vista and windows mail from Xp & outlook express (with virgin). To save my files and emails etc I used windows easy transfer software and copied the files to an external hard drive and then loaded it to the new PC. I initially had problems as my modem didn't install but virgin sent me a wireless connector and all seemed OK. However, when I click on send/receive mail I get an error message 'some errors occured while processing the requsted tasks - please see details below.' But there are no details! I have 3 email addresses.

If I click on the little arrow next to send/rec and then click on each email separately there is no problem. Equally, if I click on 'receive all' there is no problem. When I click on send/rec the first time I open windows mail there is no problem, but thereafter always the error message. I've had Virgin remotely controlling the pc for 90 minutes and they can't suss it!

Also, bizarrely at the top of the page it says inbox - outlook express provided by virgin net even though I appear to be running windows mail (it certainly isn't the usual outlook I have on my old pc). Did I inadvertently load outlook as well as my emails on top of windows mail and they've kind of merged?
