I Guess A Lot Of This Happened When Was Being Built

May 15, 2008

Arrogance from MS's part, lack of true leadership & vision, and plain
stupidity seems to plague the software giant...just read below and weep about how bad Microsoft handles some software developing.. Now multiply this by a factor of about a million, and you can imagine how bad things were with vista......

What Happened To The Old Temporary Internet Files

May 26, 2009

I am fairly new to Vista but noticed that there are relatively few files in
the Temporary Internet Files folder compared to when I was running XP. I
subscribe to an internet based business messaging system (GoSolo) and used
to be able to drag the audio messages I had listened to from that temp
folder into an archive folder. But now they don't show up at all. I can
still "save" those messages from GoSolo but the process is a lot more
tedious. Are there IE settings that will allow them to be saved to disk and
show up in the Temporary Internet Files folder in Vista?

Installing Software, Download And Nothing Happened

May 15, 2010

I'm having problems installing any software onto my computer. When I try to install something off a site eg; itunes, the download box will come up, it'll run through and as soon as the download is complete the box will close and nothing else comes up with no trace of the program I just waited two hours to download to be found on my computer anywhere.

when I try to install things from a disk like my new scanner software the omputer doesn't even read the disk, I dont get an error or a popup, it doesn't even say that anythings in the disk drive. I've tried other sorts of disks like CDs and it does the same thing.

I've never seen a discussion group like this one? I know threads break down and take a turn but I've never seen so many people in my kill file in such a short time. Hardly any help is offered here just a bunch of people saying this and that about each other, or defending Ubuntu in a windows group?

Sleeping" Nothing Happened The Screen Stayed Blank

Sep 22, 2009

my desktop as usual, its a dell XPS 630I and Ive had it maybe 4 months total. I just checked my email and logged back off to the user screen. While I was gone it kicked into hibernation mode like it always does when noones using it. When I got home like 4 hours later I moved the mouse to bring it out of sleeping and nothing happened the screen stayed blank. So I waited and waited and it never kicked back on so I manually restarted it with the power button and it loaded to the dell screen which took alot longer than normal to load, right after that it popped up "Error Loading OS". I tried restarting and hitting the F8 button... no luck.... I hit F12 and tried running the diagnostics... nothing came up...

I put the dell cd in that has vista on it and hit the repair button near the bottom of the install screen and ran the different tests and nothing came up wrong. However I tried the memory test and it started I needed to reboot in order to use it. however when I did that it kicked back to the "Error Loading OS" screen. So thats where I am right now and I have no clue what to do, I am going to just do a clean install but theres stuff Id really like to get off this drive before I wipe it clean.

Starting To Like When This Happened: Open Certain Control Panel Functions From The RUN Command Line Or Through The MMC Console Itself

Jan 18, 2009

I've been getting this error message when I try to open certain control panel functions from the RUN command line or through the MMC console itself. Other functions like performance information, user accounts and parental controls don't respond when clicked. Windows update might flash up the beginnings of a window for a split second but wont load. I've got the update icon on my task bar saying it cant update. Other than some key function being inaccessible the PC runs fine (apart form Firefox has started crashing out every now again) I can install software ok.

I've run the SVG /scannow thing and it found no problem Its my home PC sp I am setup as administrator. This problem is effecting another vanilla admin account AND the hidden Admin account. I've virus scanned in safe mode. System restore went through the motions but after it had restarted the PC it said it couldn't actually restore........

Built-in Games Do Not Run

Jul 24, 2008

I've installed Vista Ultimate 64-bit edition on my computer. I don't know why but no built-in game is running (FreeCell, MineSweeper, ChessTitans etc) except InkBall. When I go to Start-Games, a window appears, but it disappears immediately. When I try to launch the game directly from Program Files/Microsoft Games it seems that nothing happens (I get same result also when I choose run as administrator). However, after installation, the games were running (I spent some time playing minesweeper when I was downloading newest graphic driver).

Built-in Games Not Run

Mar 23, 2008

I have a laptop that I recently installed Vista Business on for a new employee. This was a clean install. The user called back that none of the Games he was familiar with in XP were available. I went into Control Panel, and went to the XP equivalent of Add/remove programs/ add Windows Components and checked the boxes for the Games. The pc seemed to install something, and when I was finished there were Games under the games folder. However, only Spider Solitaire will play. When I click on any of the others nothing comes up. The user is a member of the Administrators group. I tried right-clicking and chose Run as Administrator, and the games (except for Spider Solitare) still do not play. Again--this is not an upgrade from XP, but a new install.

Is Windows Defender Built-in To ?

Sep 30, 2009

I seem to have Windows defender running on my Vista Ultimate SP 2 laptop. This is despite the fact that I cannot see it in the list of installed programs, and my download archive does not have a version that runs in Vista. I used to have Windows Live OneCare installed, but I've uninstalled that and ran the cleanup tool, yet I still see Defender in my taskbar (although it complains that its definitions are out of date).

Built-in Microphone Not Working

Aug 24, 2009

I have an HP Pavillion DV 2500 with Conexant smart audio, running Home Premium 32bit. Recently, the built-in microphone has stopped working and I am unable to make calls with Skype or to use the Sound recorder, all I hear when I playback is very strong background noise. I tried with headphones with the same result. I tried all the solutions proposed by Skype, test call, mic check etc but ..no luck! I went to Control Panel and Sounds, the microphone is shown as "working" and the driver is correctly installed and updated. I played around with the levels but it doesn't seem to change a thing.....I don't know what to do anymore!

Built Microphone Is Not Working

Apr 7, 2009

I have Dell Inspiron 1520 and I have issue to built in microphone is not working. I tried to execute the Sigma Tel driver from Dell Driver and Support website but prompted 'Exit Error; Error : Device Object not present, Restart system and run setup. Then, asked Dell support to help and they are not really helpful, after System Restore and drivers upload and finally asked to reformat the laptop........ Anyway, this is what works for me.

1) Download the Sigma Tel driver from Dell Support Drivers page and save it in Desktop
2) Shutdown your computer
3) Start your computer and press F8 at the Dell Logo page
4) Select Safe Mode (not others)
5) Proceed to work on Safe Mode
6) Right-click the Sound icon and activate the Sound icon
7) Select Recording device.
8) If still not working, then execute the Sigma Tel driver that saved in desktop then, shutdown the computer and start as normal, you may see the system able to detect the built in Microphone then.

New Built PC: Want Clean Optimum Install

Mar 26, 2008

I building an Intel Q6600 PC from scratch running x64 Home Premium. Upon getting it up and running to the point of the OS install I would like to ask about some basics and hear anything else offered.

- I'll be using 8GB RAM (4x2GB Cards) Corsair DDR2 800 PC6400 RAM. Should I start with 4GB and add the rest later. I hear I may need a MS patch?
- I want a clean optimum install. I remember using the NTFS option in XPSP2. Any options like this I need to know about in Vx64?
- Administrator options. I will be the only user of this machine. I want everything I do to be ran as administrator. I'll add a guest account if it's ever needed. What say you?
- I hear some DVD optical drives (Lite-On LH-20A1L-06 SATA) have issues in Vista. Will I need the MS kb929777 patch?
- Photoshop CS3 is supposed to run really well in x64 but is a 32bit program. This will most likely be the first thing I install. I hear some have to command prompt to SysWOW64 and do a regsvr32 jscript.dll and a regsvr32 vbscript.dll?

Reformatting W/o A Disk Custom Built Pc

May 6, 2009

Im new to all of this so please bear with me. I'm currently running windows vista 32bit and am having problems with my pc. I noticed my pc was running slow the other day and when I looked at the updates tab it states the last time it updated was in March. I tried to update it, it gives me an error that when I look it up states its firewall related.
(error 80072EFD) I uninstalled all of my anti virus programs and disabled firewalls nada. I've tried to have the pcsafety people do a remote assist 3 times and they cant find the problem. We've scanned the pc for spyware and malware 3 different times (Norman antivirus (the tech did this) spy sweeper and also the tool built into windows. They've
tried resetting the batch etc with no luck. I'm to the point of just reformatting my pc but that brings me to the current dilemma.

I custom built my pc a year ago, it does -not- have a recovery partition and I do not have a back up disk for my os. Is there a way to create a partition of vista's original settings, that I can reboot from?

How U do'in?! Ok remember back to win95, 98, 2000 even XP that if you put a alot of fonts on your computer it would degrade it's performance. Well, albiet a trivial thing. Has MS ever solved this? Or built a font manager into the OS. I'm a font crackhead! I'll admit I have a serious problem with them! Shame that you can embed fonts in web pages yet. You can but nothing cross browser. I'm not tryin to install my CD of 5000 fonts .. but it'd be nice to keep a good number on hand.

Blue Screen: Built In Backup Centre

Jul 16, 2008

Tuesday I finally had my system running like I wanted it to. I run Home Premium 64 bit SP1. So I thought I should make a full backup of of all my documents on the internal harddisk and the external harddisk as well. I did this with the built-in backup centre. The backup was made to DVD's. The first attempt failed. My wife was working on her account, while backup was running on my account. It just stopped for an unknown reason.

I started another full backup and got a blue screen when changing DVD's. The Problems and Solutions function did'nt come up with a solution. This happened three times in total. Today I finally finished this backup (it picks up where it left of). My system is running fine otherwise. My harddisk is fine. HDTune doesnt show any bad sectors. I suspect it's a driver problem of sorts, but i'd like to have a definitive answer...........

Ultimate Has Stopped Opening Built-in Programs

Jun 15, 2008

I got my brand new (custom Puget Systems) computer last Thursday with Vista Ultimate pre-installed. Today, Vista Ultimate (32-bit, SP1) got profoundly goofy. This new computer has an XFX nVidia 780i motherboard, an Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 (3.16 GHz) CPU, and 2 GB of RAM on OCZ DDR2-800 Reaper chips. Today, Vista has stopped opening Microsoft programs such as Vista's pre installed games, "Windows Ultimate Extras", "Windows Update", the "Default Programs" page, "Windows Explorer", and "Control Panel". (This is not an exhaustive list. The "Control Panel" page opens, but remains blank. When I click on "Windows Explorer", I briefly get an error message telling me that "Windows Explorer" is not responding, and that Vista is looking for a solution, but that message disappears quickly on its own.

Other programs open and run just fine. Microsoft Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player open OK. All non-Microsoft programs seem to open and run without problems. I scanned the computer with the anti-virus program, but the problem continues. Before this problem, I ran Windows Update several times since I got the computer on Thursday. In addition, I have been moving data over from the old XP computer and I have uploaded programs including "notepad++". I might consider using the "system restore" function, except that the "Control Panel" page opens, but remains blank....

What Happened To The "MOVE" Option?

Jun 12, 2009

Three weeks ago I purchased an Acer Aspire x1700 with the Vista x64 OS. I sort and catalog 20 to 30 pictures a day downloaded from digital cameras. In the XP system you were able to right click on the pic, in the drop down menu is an option to MOVE. Left click on MOVE and the drop down menu lets you select exactly where you want to put the picture. With the Vista x64 OS there is no MOVE option. You have to COPY the picture, search for the destination folder through many sub folders, PASTE the picture in the folder. Then you have to remember to GO BACK TO THE ORIGINAL FOLDER AND DELETE THE PICTURE you just cataloged! WHY!!! This takes twice as long. If you want to move more than one pic you have to highlite the pictures you want to move, right click on the task bar, left click on side-by-side and hope you have the right folder minimized in the task bar, then slide the pictures you want to move across to the other folder next to it. Then you have to GO BACK TO THE ORIGINAL FOLDER AND DELETE THE PICTURES you have just sorted or cataloged.

Would it have been too expensive to add a MOVE option to the drop down menu like there was in the XP OS or maybe Microsoft needs more "pay as you call" to tech support!

Does everyone like being asked for "Permission to continue" when you want to open something? Seems to me if you didn't want to do that operation you wouldn't have clicked on it in the first place.
