Folders Missing Sort Of ? Dual Boot XP
Dec 8, 2008I have a dual boot of Vista Ultimate and XP Home on one drive.
In Vista I can "see" and access all of my folders on the Vista and XP partitions but when I boot into XP I can't "see" or access my Vista folders on the Vista partition. I have been able to do so in the past but they are missing now.
How To Sort Contacts By Last Name In ?
May 20, 2008How do I sort contacts by last name instead of the default first name in Vista? XP has a "sort by" option under the view pulldown, Vista programmers didn't think this was necessary, or the option is hidden someplace where I cant find it.

Dec 23, 2007I have a 250Gb IDE drive that I use to just keep usless stuff on. It came out of my old XP box. I see my 500Gb sata drive fine .. obviously since I installed Vista on it. When the box boots it sees the IDE drive and device manager see the IDE drive too! Alas when you open windows explorer up you do not see that drive at all! I don't get it! I checked the DMA settings and it is enabled for each of the channels. I'll keep google-ing in the mean time!

Nov 10, 2009I followed the column width tutorial thing here and a bunch more to make it so all my folder have the default sort by order of name, date modified, type, size so its like xp. but when I lookit my columns it ends up like this all the columns are stuck at 80 pixels so date modified is cut off. I did do the obvious method of going to the show more and changing it to 104 which is the size for all of the date modified to show up but that didn't work so thats why i'm asking. For some reason if I shuffle through the views (I press the view button on the top a few times to go from list to details, etc back to list) and come back to list format, it ends up the way I want it. Like so:
but if i close the folder and reopen it, it ends up the first way. I did press apply to folders after the change was made to see if it sticks but it didn't My questions is how you set it so I can make it look like the way it does the second time around the first time cause looking at "Date modif..." is sorta annoying. do i have to reset all the folders and then reapply settings? Also another quick question, is there a way to change all your folders to a single template instead of going one by one? since view settings are set are done by template. and not the subfolder options cause that only changes the options of the subfolders of the root directory or whatever directory you chose. or if that isn't possible, is it possible the settings for the template for "all items" and apply it to other templates?
Font Folder - How To Sort Them?

Sort Order: Data Midified / Created
May 27, 2009This has been asked in many ways in many places, but I've yet to see a solution to this... when using Windows Explorer to display folder contents, and to then sort the files displayed by date (created, accessed, or modified, the problem is the same), the files are sorted first by month, then by day, then by year. The result is that all "January" date appear first, then all days within January, then all years for January dates, and THEN all February dates, etc. This is not how a sort by date is done.
Any first year programming student knows that when sorting by date, the result HAS to be chronological. Why doesn't Microsoft know this? Fields in a sort need to be handled by TYPE. Date fields are NOT the same as numerical fields. When an ascending sort of "1/15/2007, 1/14/2009" produces the results of "1/14/2009, 1/15/2007", that is a BUG, and Microsoft should fix it.
Sort Direction In Multicolumn File Select Menus
Sep 10, 2008One annoyance that I've found in Vista is that unlike all previous Windows versions that I've used, when I get a file selection menu, such as for opening a file within an application or 'save as...', if the list is a multicolumn one, as is usually the case, the ordering of the files is NOT vertical as it always had been before, but is horizontal.
Although I can see a logic in this, the fact is that when I'm faced with columns, my eye naturally reads down each column, and therefore I need the vertical sort arrangement as had always previously been the case.
Please, therefore, does anyone know of a fix for this, so that I can restore vertical sort arrangement in those lists?

I tried to follow the instructions from the previously solved thread, but I can not find the "desktop.ini". When I go to the users folder inside my choices are Administrator and Public and I can not find the "desktop.ini" file. I have windows vista.

Jul 29, 2009I am just configuring Windows Mail in Vista. In Outlook (on XP), I had multiple email accounts linked to different folder structures. Each account had a different set of folders. In Windows Mail, it seems everything is being downloaded into one Inbox. Can I re-create the separate folders for each email account in WinMail?
Also, my gmail accounts folder structure was synchronized with the folder structure on the web using IMAP. Can I do that in WinMail, too? If so, how (or point me to directions)?
Cannot Re/name Folders!

May 19, 2008After a month or two honeymoon with my new computer last summer, Windows Vista quit letting me create new file folders!!! This is really, really annoying, needless to say.
The other thing is that Windows Vista crashed this weekend and lost some of my files - and the start menu quit working. I think some of the indexes got screwed up or something. I don't know what brought this on except that we had a couple of power failures - and the machine doesn't seem to run chkdsk automatically on restart. If I started the machine and walked away and didn't see the prompt, then I've been using a 'dirty disk' for a week or two and it finally crashed. Or I also installed wireless networking. Also Windows Update downloads automatically and could have downloaded something incompatible with my software. So who knows what might have caused this .I couldn't restore either - now if I ask for Windows restore, it comes up
with an error message.I've been using DOS and windows machines for 20 years and I've never had this happen to me before. I've always had virus checkers and been conscientious about backing up my data.
Folders - Read-only
Mar 23, 2008I have copied all my internet favourites folders in from Windows XP (IE7). I didn't use a password in XP and still don't in Vista.
Now, I can't organise or add-to any of the folders in Vista. It says they are read-only.
When I display the properties of the folders, they have a green square (mixed content) in the read-only tick-box. I switch it off and accept the prompt which says that it will apply to files and sub-folders.
But when I go to use them they are still read-only, and when I look at their properties, they are unchanged - still flagged with mixed content. And I still can't organise or add to them.
Lost Folders

Mar 23, 2008I can't get access to certain folders, everything was fine until my HD went KaPuT, so I installed a new dual 160GB raid system so I won;t lose it all again, the only problem is now that I reloaded Vista Ultimate I can't access anything, I have turned UAC off (my god what a mess that is, who thought up that POS?) and gave permissions and turned over ownership of everything to me, there is nobody else listed as a user in my system, yet when I use my AutoCad LT 2008 and try to access files, when I click on the directory I need to get into, it does nothing, I can get into other ones, but not any of the ones with little tiny curved arrows in boxes on the lower left. I have access of them in explorer, but not through LT 2008, HALP !! I need to get back to work and this is killing me, I am fairly knowledgable in puter stuff, but Vista is insane. up until now I have liked it, but XP is looking better all the time.

Apr 2, 2008I'm facing this issue with some applications that needs to write some files on their installation directory... for example Yahoo Messenger creates some folders and write some files on its installation directory (e.g. C:Program FilesYahoo) for different reasons, like messages archiving.
These files and folders are created somehow and the application is able to access them correctly, but when I use Windows Explorer to see them they are not there! They are absolutely not hidden and even if they are I have the option of displaying the hidden files and folders enabled, and still I can't see them! I don't know if Vista has some way to store these file, but I couldn't even find them by searching!
This problem isn't specific to Yahoo Messanger as I faced it before with other application. One another example is eMule before that create Vista version that stores your settings and downloaded file in your Vista user folders instead of Program Files.
