View 9 Replies View RelatedSince I first startet it my Windows Vista Home Premium has problems with sharing my RAM with more than one process. If I just open one application like 3d max, I can use my full 2GB of RAM. But if I start an internet explorer, a media player and some folders totally using 1GB of RAM, the context menus don't show completely or not at all, folders don't open with the explorer but some other program (mainly my media player). I tried everything, but I just can't resolve that problem.
View 4 Replies View RelatedThe Windows Explorer under Vista Home Premium does not list my new HP Color LaserJet 1600 even though the printer works fine and is an available printer to every other application on my computer, including Internet Explorer. Is this a bug in Vista Home Premium? I can work around this by printing in the Paint program but it would be quicker and more straight forward to be able to print directly from Windows Explorer.

I recently had my computer fixed, and when I got it back, Internet explorer works, though firefox somehow can't connect.
Also (Not sure if it's relevent, but) i tried to install Java, but it says It couldnt download with the current connection settings. I tried allowing firefox through my windows firewall, but it's still not working. I'm pretty sure I don't have any other firewalls.
Friend has a flash drive that was working OK, but when he plugged it in yesterday, it didn't show in Explorer. When he plugs it in it makes the appropriate sounds, but it doesn't appear in Explorer or Disk management. We uninstalled all of the pertinent entries in Device Manager and tried it again, and it all reinstalled perfectly, gave notice that it was in stalled, etc., but in addition to not showing up, there is no "Safely Remove Hardware" icon, no mention of the device when I force the "safely remove" dialogue.
Tried it on another machine with the same results, tried another stick on my friend's machine and it works fine. Is this thing toast? Is there no utility that can reach into the "drive's" guts and make it come back out of hiding, or is it irrecoverable corruption?
I am using Vista Home. I reformatted my harddrive (when the harddrives are wiped and a clean windows is installed) about a week ago. Ever since things have been acting buggy, and several major problems have sprung up.
- First, internet explorer freezes up and doesn't respond after some surfing. When I try opening another tab it also happens. I try to x out, and it just stays up, not responding. So task manager?
- Second, when I go to the task manager to look around, that doesn't end programs. It too either freezes up, or when I CAD, a black screen loads with a 'Failure Security Options' popup.
- Third, I thought it might be the antivirus I had, so I uninstalled the Norton AV and installed AVP 8.0. It picked up 2 trojans, and after that nothing. After that, I restarted and then couldn't log onto the internet. I finally am able to now after constant restarts and the like.
- Fourth, On the subject of 'restarts', when things freeze up, I can't restart. I have to hold down the power, which I know isn't good. Everything just siezes up. >.<
And finally, Fifth, I tried doing a disk defrag, and it just won't load. When I go to the task manager, it shows it's running, but with very little memory, and not showing up. When I click to run again, another defrag comes up but not avail to me. When I try to end, task manager freaks out. Should I do another restore, or is there something I can do to fix this
I have an email in my inbox with an attachment. When I open the attachment my text editor reports the following path :UsersMYNAMEAppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsTemporary Internet FilesContent.IE5JTQYLO9PNathaniel Moore Descendants.txt If I try to open this directly in my text editor (EditPad Lite which stores recently visited documents) it reports that the file cannot be found. I have searched my computer and the search cannot find this document. Windows explorer doesn't even show a Temporary Internet Files subfolder in the Windows folder. Can anyone explain what is going on here? I don't appreciate Microsoft retaining information on my computer that I am unaware of. Can I get rid of this attachment without deleting the email?

I simply want to change the display names of the files to colors such as BLUE, GREY, etc., just like I can do on the MAC O/S for the past 5 years.
I do NOT want to use any third party software file managers. There must be a way to do it in Windows since APPLE has been doing it for 60 months now. I can't believe that Windows STILL Cannot perform this simple task! If you have a working solution using Windows Explorer please email me and let me know.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI wasn't quite sure if IE8 was the culprit, but it became apparent once I removed it. Internet Explorer 8 interferes with the functionality in Windows Explorer for Vista. Say for example: With IE8 installed, open up "Computer". Close it, then open it again. It should be instantaneous. But its not. A window will take over to 10 seconds to show its initial contents. Once its open though, its very fast because the instance is already running. But once it closes it will take another 10 seconds to open again. Internet Explorer 8 itself opens up very slowly even after the first opening. Can any Vista users verify this?
1. Install IE8
2. Go: Start > click Computer
3. Close that Window.
4. Repeat step 2.
Is it an instantaneous opening or does the window take more than 5 seconds to populate? Repeat those steps with opening Internet Explorer. Is it the same? If so, welcome to the club. Does Microsoft have any way to report this bug to developers?
Is it possible in Vista window explorer to sort files by extension?

So one should have an option to sort emails using the part of the address AFTER the @ symbol as well. View 5 Replies View RelatedI followed the column width tutorial thing here and a bunch more to make it so all my folder have the default sort by order of name, date modified, type, size so its like xp. but when I lookit my columns it ends up like this all the columns are stuck at 80 pixels so date modified is cut off. I did do the obvious method of going to the show more and changing it to 104 which is the size for all of the date modified to show up but that didn't work so thats why i'm asking. For some reason if I shuffle through the views (I press the view button on the top a few times to go from list to details, etc back to list) and come back to list format, it ends up the way I want it. Like so:
but if i close the folder and reopen it, it ends up the first way. I did press apply to folders after the change was made to see if it sticks but it didn't My questions is how you set it so I can make it look like the way it does the second time around the first time cause looking at "Date modif..." is sorta annoying. do i have to reset all the folders and then reapply settings? Also another quick question, is there a way to change all your folders to a single template instead of going one by one? since view settings are set are done by template. and not the subfolder options cause that only changes the options of the subfolders of the root directory or whatever directory you chose. or if that isn't possible, is it possible the settings for the template for "all items" and apply it to other templates?
I can't find a way to sort font folder by last modified date. In windows xp there were that column but in vista it seems to be disappeared.

As part of the Office 14 release wave, Microsoft is going to provide“Office Web applications,” which it is describing as “lightweight versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. These versions will allow users to access their documents via a Web browser on the PC, phone or other devices.
Microsoft is slated to make the announcement about its Office Web applications plans at the Professional Developers Conference (PDC) in Los Angeles on October 28 during the morning keynote. Read more at the Source: Microsoft to ‘webify’ Office (sort of) | All about Microsoft | ZDNet.com

Is there a way to have windows vista (or 7 I guess) configured so that the two flash drives are just the E: and they are working in a raid mirror config via software ?
This has been asked in many ways in many places, but I've yet to see a solution to this... when using Windows Explorer to display folder contents, and to then sort the files displayed by date (created, accessed, or modified, the problem is the same), the files are sorted first by month, then by day, then by year. The result is that all "January" date appear first, then all days within January, then all years for January dates, and THEN all February dates, etc. This is not how a sort by date is done.
Any first year programming student knows that when sorting by date, the result HAS to be chronological. Why doesn't Microsoft know this? Fields in a sort need to be handled by TYPE. Date fields are NOT the same as numerical fields. When an ascending sort of "1/15/2007, 1/14/2009" produces the results of "1/14/2009, 1/15/2007", that is a BUG, and Microsoft should fix it.
One annoyance that I've found in Vista is that unlike all previous Windows versions that I've used, when I get a file selection menu, such as for opening a file within an application or 'save as...', if the list is a multicolumn one, as is usually the case, the ordering of the files is NOT vertical as it always had been before, but is horizontal.
Although I can see a logic in this, the fact is that when I'm faced with columns, my eye naturally reads down each column, and therefore I need the vertical sort arrangement as had always previously been the case.
Please, therefore, does anyone know of a fix for this, so that I can restore vertical sort arrangement in those lists?
I have had Windows Vista 64 for 2 Months now and of that period of time it worked soundly for about 2 Weeks. I am NOT an irresponsible User, I don't just delete Data, I know a little something about computing, I don't visit or download from dubious sites etc.

I am running Windows Vista Premium Home SP1. When I boot my computer, Windows Defender doesn't start automatically. It works fine if I start it manually. I have never run Windows OneCare, MSCONFIG shows it set to start, the Windows Defender service is set to automatic and Tools | Options has all the checkboxes checked.
