How To Sort Contacts By Last Name In ?
May 20, 2008
How do I sort contacts by last name instead of the default first name in Vista? XP has a "sort by" option under the view pulldown, Vista programmers didn't think this was necessary, or the option is hidden someplace where I cant find it.

I am having problems importing contacts into Vista Contacts. I tried 2 things :
1/ LDIF
I exported my contacts in Thunderbird under an LDIF format.
I then imported this LDIF file within Contacts
The import stops 1/5 of the way, simply saying that there is an error
in the contacts, and it stays stuck
2/ CVS
I exported my contacts in Thunderbird under a CVS file. I then tried to import the file within Contacts but cannot do the mapping:
- all column headings are lumped together, with plenty of ","
- all accentuated caracters are replaced by squares
Also, with the LDIF method, 50 contacts out of 300 were imported. In these imported contacts, all accentuated caracters were replaced by symbols. I opened the CVS file in Microsoft Excel: everything is fine.

I installed Outlook 2003 on my computer which has Vista Ultimate so I could use a Dell Axim. Now when I go to fax a document using Windows Fax and Scan and try to select a contact, Outlook Contacts is displayed instead of Windows Contacts. It won't let me choose to use Windows Contacts either. I tried using Default Programs to associate Windows Contacts with it's defaults but that didn't work.

I've been trying for hours, now. My problem is that the contacts fields get all mixed up because they were outlook and them gmail, and now back to outlook 2007. But when I try to export them to Windows Vista Contacts I loose all information. My outlook 2007 is a trial version and will expire next time I turn it on, so I have to get it done today.

When sorting by email address, the first part of the address (before the @ symbol) is often "help" or "support" or some other standard word. So one should have an option to sort emails using the part of the address AFTER the @ symbol as well. I followed the column width tutorial thing here and a bunch more to make it so all my folder have the default sort by order of name, date modified, type, size so its like xp. but when I lookit my columns it ends up like this all the columns are stuck at 80 pixels so date modified is cut off. I did do the obvious method of going to the show more and changing it to 104 which is the size for all of the date modified to show up but that didn't work so thats why i'm asking. For some reason if I shuffle through the views (I press the view button on the top a few times to go from list to details, etc back to list) and come back to list format, it ends up the way I want it. Like so:
but if i close the folder and reopen it, it ends up the first way. I did press apply to folders after the change was made to see if it sticks but it didn't My questions is how you set it so I can make it look like the way it does the second time around the first time cause looking at "Date modif..." is sorta annoying. do i have to reset all the folders and then reapply settings? Also another quick question, is there a way to change all your folders to a single template instead of going one by one? since view settings are set are done by template. and not the subfolder options cause that only changes the options of the subfolders of the root directory or whatever directory you chose. or if that isn't possible, is it possible the settings for the template for "all items" and apply it to other templates?

Microsoft to ‘webify’ Office (sort of)Written by Mary Jo Foley @ 9:09 am October 28th, 2008. Microsoft is finally doing what many have been clamoring for — making Web-based versions of its Office apps available — but in a different way than expected.
As part of the Office 14 release wave, Microsoft is going to provide“Office Web applications,” which it is describing as “lightweight versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. These versions will allow users to access their documents via a Web browser on the PC, phone or other devices.
Microsoft is slated to make the announcement about its Office Web applications plans at the Professional Developers Conference (PDC) in Los Angeles on October 28 during the morning keynote. Read more at the Source: Microsoft to ‘webify’ Office (sort of) | All about Microsoft | ZDNet.com

This has been asked in many ways in many places, but I've yet to see a solution to this... when using Windows Explorer to display folder contents, and to then sort the files displayed by date (created, accessed, or modified, the problem is the same), the files are sorted first by month, then by day, then by year. The result is that all "January" date appear first, then all days within January, then all years for January dates, and THEN all February dates, etc. This is not how a sort by date is done.
Any first year programming student knows that when sorting by date, the result HAS to be chronological. Why doesn't Microsoft know this? Fields in a sort need to be handled by TYPE. Date fields are NOT the same as numerical fields. When an ascending sort of "1/15/2007, 1/14/2009" produces the results of "1/14/2009, 1/15/2007", that is a BUG, and Microsoft should fix it.

One annoyance that I've found in Vista is that unlike all previous Windows versions that I've used, when I get a file selection menu, such as for opening a file within an application or 'save as...', if the list is a multicolumn one, as is usually the case, the ordering of the files is NOT vertical as it always had been before, but is horizontal.
Although I can see a logic in this, the fact is that when I'm faced with columns, my eye naturally reads down each column, and therefore I need the vertical sort arrangement as had always previously been the case.
Please, therefore, does anyone know of a fix for this, so that I can restore vertical sort arrangement in those lists?

I have a problem with the Vista program Windows Contacts in conjunction with using email programs. I have Windows Vista Home Premium. I like to use Outlook 2000 as my email program. I have the same problem if I use Windows Mail as my email program. I can use Outlook to send and receive email, but I cannot add any contacts to Windows Contacts. Also when creating a new email, if I click on the To… button to get to Windows Contacts, I get the error message “The messaging interface has returned an unknown error. If this problem persists, restart Outlook.”, which of course does not help.
I am not sure, but I think I created the problem by importing Outlooks 2000 contacts from my old PC in an improper format into Outlook 2000 on my new Vista PC (which is where the problem is).

In windows outlook you could arrange your contacts so that a folder (family,
local friends, Veterans) etc. could be together and when you addressed the
email ...you could just select from one of your folders and address the mail.
NOW the folders don't show up and I have to select the addressee's from the
400 names in my contacts list.
to make groups for all of them...cause sometimes an email is only to a few
people in a folder.

I've imported my contacts file into Windows Mail but something funny is happening. When I am creating a message and am typing the first few letters of a contact's name, some names come up automatically just as they did in the Outlook but not all of them, although I those names are there on the contacts list. I can't figure out why. In order to add these names I have to go to Tools, Select Recipient and add their names to the TO field. Is there a way I can get Windows Mail to insert all contacts names automatically?
