I have an new Acer Laptop with Vista Home premium. It has an ALPS touchpad. I want to disable the touchpad (and enable it w/ USB mouse on rare occasions where I might use the touchpad). I went to the control panel and mouse properties and there is no way to disable it there. I also went to the device driver area and the disable device was greyed out. How do I disable this touchpad?
View 5 Repliesi don't find this on the i'net after a month on google so i'll post here. it seems the alps drivers do not fully support v.x64. doesn't have the disable button anywhere. today vaio help (tier 3, supposedly) finally told me the above which i told there tier 2 a week ago, i guess he didn't read the notes. said i would have to live with it. they wouldn't help w/ registry hack. probably means they didn't know it. bad, bad, bad sony. anyway, to the chase. i saw where linux people could use synaptics drivers. tried the same trick w/ v.x64. there was the button under start>control panel>mousec>device settings>disable. those penguins aren't so bad. i have a severe neurological disease and that touchpad rendered a $1200.00 computer unuseable. sony's response was "live with it." to quote my favorite tech authorities, the three stooges, "chowderheads." let me reiterate "bad sony, bad sony." Drivers | Synaptics v.10.1.8 worked for me on win vista home premium x4, sp1/vaio vgn-fw170j.

I am not interested in = what Microsoft has to say, I want my local news service in there, plus a = few others, and if I choose "All Feeds" then I get Microsoft's feeds = too, but I don't want them.
The help file is typically unhelpful. The mouse problem referred to in = so many previous KB documents has still not been fixed. Even though on setup we tell Vista that our currency is South African = Rand and our Time Zone is +0200, when setting the regional information = we still have to redo the time zone. DUH! Also, MSFT ought to know by = now that we do not use Letter Size paper but A4, and we use Arial fonts = not Times New Roman, and so the grievances continue.

I have a Toshiba Satellite A100-033 running Vista Home Basic. I mostly use the laptop as a desk top replacement and, as I dislike using the touchpad, I disabled it, and instead I use an external mouse via one of the USB ports. On my laptop the standard way to disable the touchpad is by simultaneously pressing the Fn key and the F9 key. However, to be honest, I am not sure whether I did in fact disable the touchpad by this means, or whether I used some other means (if it was by some other means then I have forgotten what this was). Recently I wished to re-enable the touchpad so that I could use the laptop outside the house without having to take my external mouse with me as well. However, I found that pressing Fn + F9 did not re-enable the touchpad and I now can't use the touchpad at all.
If I go into mouse properties (in control panel), this tells me that my synaptics pointing device is enabled. If I go into device manager and look at "mice", I am told that my touchpad is working properly. All this makes me suspect that the problem is not a hardware fault but that I have altered some setting, with the result that my touchpad is permanently disabled until I change the setting back to its original state.
I deleted both the upper and lower filters, the restarted my computer. The drive worked like new, except my keyboard and touchpad and volume keys wouldn't. My external mouse works, and i can "type" using an on-screen keyboard, which is unacceptable. And, for whatever reason, my internet doesn't work. I double click on the icons and nothing happens, though at the status bar below it says i have a signal.
I called up Geek Squad which I should have done first, and the guy there said that I'd deleted the keyboard's 'keys' which I'm assuming is some sort of programming from the register. He said that I could either re-install windows or look online for the correct keys and reinstall them, which sounds WAY easier than reinstalling windows. I have no idea how to do that, and don't want to screw up my computer any more than it already is.
I can't use my touchpad. My arrow/cursor is frozen in the middle of the screen.
1) I can still use external mouse
2) I saw in similar post somebody suggested using memory tool scan from microsoft. I did find that but when I clicked on it the owner was not microsoft but some other name. I am tired of downloding stuff on my computer and find out later that they are spyware etc..
3) I purchased Norton 360 which does not help
4) I ran system restore, did not help. First when I ran system restore it gave me error message "unspecified error during system restore" I ran it in safemode and now I could restore. Then I had to do the updates again. Rebooted toshiba laptop agai and the cursor still frozen
i have an HP Notebook with a Vista Home Premium 32bit OS. I can't do a mouse click, directly on the touchpad. The Synaptics Touchpad V6.5 is installed. II tried to download a newer version of the synaptics, but the system told me that the installed version is newer.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have an Acer Aspire 5100. Mostly it works good with Vista Home Premium w/updates except the new SP1. Sometime ago the touchpad quit working and I just lived with it until today when I had a little time to investigate. In Device Manager it says the device is working properly. It also say its a touchpad on PS/2 port using IRQ12. I downloaded the latest driver suite from syaptics.com (5.2MB for the Vista 32 bit version) and ran it after disabling the device, enabling the device, uninstalling the current driver, restarting and having Vista reinstall the old drivers with no luck.
However, after running the new driver suite (an .exe file) and restarting Vista, the device showed disabled. When I enabled it - the touchpad worked momentarily (about 5 or 6 seconds). Every time I disable or enable it, it responds and works for about 5 or six seconds and then quits. No option to change the port or IRQ setting as they are 'grayed out'.
a while ago a program was installed with window update. The application presented a window for handwriting. maybe Vista thought my Desktop computer was a handheld device? well i disabled that application and ever since it was installed, my touchpad (which is integrated with my keyboard and has its own PS2 plug) does not work. ing 'double tap' thing being double click. I can't stand it. I've accidentally clicked on countless things over the past two days (I just got this laptop). Yet I can find no way to edit it. I'm about ready to chuck this thing out a window because it's so frustrating. I downloaded Synaptics, but it doesn't seem to help because I can't find the tapping options. Maybe I downloaded the wrong version of it. If Sypantics works, can some give me instructions to getting rid of double tap?
When I surf with IE7 og have more than 7 tabs open at the same time, its like windows runs out of memory, all of a sudden I cant open any new tabs and right click on the touchpad does not react. If I then minimize IE7 and right click on the desktop nothing happens either. If I then close a couple of programs (its only Yahoo messenger og coreTemp that are running(coreTemp shows how warm your cpu is, and min is constantly between 56 og 64 degrees celsius)), then right click works again.
Usually when this happens I cant even get the taskmanager up, but if I close Yahoo Messenger then I can, and now I can see that there is used about 47% memory, under proceses i can see that:
Yahoo uses up to 50MB,
Iexplorer 27 - 150MB
og Dwm.exe takes up to 120MB.
The problem also happens if Yahoo is not started, so thats not the cause. I have disabled aero and use minimal of all the things Vista comes with, so the I get max. performance following most of the instructions but the probleme persist every time I use IE and use more than 7 tabs (This should not happen, and using more than 7 tabs is perfectly normal)............
I have a Toshiba laptop, which I know has nothing to do problem just thought I say what I have. Every time I go deeper into web pages or click on additonal links within a web the DEP shuts down Internet Explorer and will not take me into where I want to go, It does this on any all sites. Ones that I fully trust to ones that maybe could be a issue but I know are not. Can someone help with this issue or tell me how to disable DEP.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm on Vista x64 Home Premium (SP1), and I have a problem. When my laptop got shipped with Vista, I disabled UAC on the spot because of various software incompatibility. Recently I have been led to enable it again because of some failing software. It didn't solve the problem and thus I decided to disable it again. However, this time, when I go on to User Accounts and I click on the "Turn User Account Control (UAC) on or off", it brings up the popup that asks me whether I want to proceed. I click "Yes", expecting the dialog box to show up so that I can successfully disable the UAC. But the dialog box never came up. The UAC popup just closed and the computer remained motionless. I tried rebooting, and manually deactivating UAC using command-line prompts which yielded "Access Denied".
And now, I cannot use my computer effectively, as most of my software is uncompatible with UAC and fails to run. Is there any way to fix this ? I only have one account that is being marked as Administrator, and it seems quite strange that I can't set UAC back off again. Google search didn't help me a lot either - most links only tell me how to actually disable it, which fails on my system....
if it is advisable to disable superfetch??, and if so, will it improve overall performance?

I do however only have 2 "normal" speakers -- no surround equipment or anything like that at all. And I think the audio sounds weird now, compared with my old PC, which did not have this "HD Audio" thing. Is there any way to go back to plain old audio? Maybe it can be done in the Realtek HD Audio confguration in the Control Panel?
