Screen Saver Or Power Saver Doesn't Appear
Jun 2, 2009The other day i was sitting next to my mate who was making notes on his MacBook. The cool thing i saw on that Mac was that, when not in use for a few seconds, the screen saver or the power saver doesn't appear, but first the brightness of the screen got to its minimum and then the screen went into power saver mode.
Is there a way to make my Vista do that as well? So instead of a screen saver, it would just turn the brightness to its lowest point and after a few minutes, it would go completely dark to save energy?

Home Premium Boots To Black Screen
Oct 26, 2009I have a Toshiba Satellite L300D -01Q (PSLC0C-01Q08C) that is running Vista Home Premium (SP unknown). The kernel completely loads to a black screen (active / backlit black) with only a moveable mouse pointer. None of the Recovery Options have helped and I can't do an Upgrade Install because I can't get to the GUI.
My priority and objective is to save this system and preserve files, programs and settings. I read Brink's How to Repair and Verify the Integrity of Vista System Files with System File Checker and I'd like to try sfc /scannow, however, I get the following:........

Windows Home Premium Black Screen
Apr 24, 2008I've had my HP laptop for almost about a year, and two days ago I started it up and logged in. Once logged in the screen went completely black except for the cursor. No message, no text, just black with a cursor. At first I thought it was a crash, but after several reboots still nothing. Eventually I tried Ctrl-Alt-Delete and got task manager, and then managed to get some apps up including a web browser. This doesn't sound like the descriptions of reduced functionalty mode I've read here and elsewhere. Is it? I tried going back to the oldest restore point, 2 weeks ago (I've had two auto-updates since then) but no change. Also tried running slui.exe as was suggested in anothe post here and all it says is "Activation Successful".What's going on and how can I get my system back?

Oct 24, 2009Attached are the debug logs. The crashes started happening on the Thursday morning of Oct. 22. The first one happened at around 3 AM. The second one, on the 23rd, happened at around 2 AM. The 3rd one, on the 24th, happened at around 2 AM as well. The 4th one was less than a hour later than the 3rd one, when I was doing something with the kernel memory dump file. Perhaps I was opening it. The 3rd and 4th ones were the ones that I actually saw happening. The 3rd one happened when I was sitting there, but not doing anything to the computer at the moment. The 4th one happened when the computer was not being responsive when I was trying to view the kernel dump file, or when I was trying to close the Notepad2 that I was using to view the kernel dump file..........

Now, when I try to turn it on again, the only issue is the Windows Profile screen where you log in to your account. There is nothing showing on the screen instead. The mouse works alright. I can move around on the screen.

Oct 19, 2009I am using a Dell XPS 1330 machine running Vista Home Premium.
I needed to replace some files(tcpip.sys,tcpreg.sys etc)in the system 32 folder with their new versions. But Vista wont let me copy them to the destination folder(system 32) citing admin reasons.
Read a bit and found out that "Administrator" account is by default disabled in Vista.
So ran the following 2 commands from command prompt to enable Admin account and set the admin password.
net user administrator password
net user administrator activate:yes
After that logged off and was expecting to see the admin login option on the welcome screen. But it didnt come.
Actually in the control panel user accounts I can see myself as Administrator....but I guess that is some administrator with limited powers and there is a greater/stronger/divine/all-conquering "Administrator" above this crappy admin category to which I right now belong and which Microsoft has due to some inexplicable reasons kept undercover. So plz plz help me and lemme know how to get that all-conquering admin to come on my welcome screen so that i can log in and try out what I want.
Windows7: Screen To Sleep And There Is No Screen Saver Setup
Nov 24, 2009I know this is a Vista news group but I haven't been able to find a Windows 7 group so maybe one of you guys can answer my question. I have the power settings to never put computer or screen to sleep and there is no screen saver setup. When I leave my computer alone for awhile the screen goes black. This never happened with Vista when setup this way why is Windows 7 doing this?

May 2, 2009I am having a very wierd issue with vista's screen saver. So basically when I leave the comp idle it goes into screen saver then turns off the monitor after 15 mins. Sometimes, more often than not, I come back and move the mouse and hit a few keys on the keyboard and nothing. The monitor wont come out of standby I try turning it off and back on, and nothing. I have the latest drivers for everything in my system and I checked the power management settings and they both are able to wake the computer up. I have a G15 keyboard and I keep the leds on and when this happens the leds are off and the lazer for the mouse is off too.

Aug 14, 2009I seem to be having some trouble with my screen saver. I have the picture viewer as my preferred screen saver but it doesn't seem to work at all. The preview image shows that I should be seeing something, but when I click the "preview" button, the screen goes black and doesn't cycle through anything. It is as though the screen saver is activated, but not cycling. All other screen savers work except the picture viewer. I use a nvidia 9300 GE, which I just updated the drivers for about 2 days ago.

Sep 14, 2009Can anyone explain why Windows periodically freezes when the screen saver is running? At first I thought it was due to the Windows Live Photo Gallery. After running for several hours (overnight, for e.g.), it would freeze on one picture. Usually moving the mouse would eventually close the screen saver and I'd return to the desktop.
I then changed to a regular screen saver, Mystify. Usually this isn't a problem, but today when I moved the mouse, the screen saver froze. I couldn't soft boot, actually had to shut down manually. This is the second time this has happened.
I've checked whether I'm using the latest video driver using device manager, and it says everything is up to date. I'm using NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430, driver version 7.15.11.7530. Could there be a device conflict? How would I be able to tell?
Change Screen Saver To Photos
Mar 23, 2008I want to change my screen saver to my photos. I followed the steps already, seen it in the preview screen, but when I don't do any thing on the computer and the screen saver is supposed to come up, it doesn't. It says I have no photos in the folder i selected.

Apr 20, 2010I cannot get group policy to initiate the screensaver on one of our vista business sp1 machines. I've done extensive research and found only solutions that revolve around updating the HID-compliant mouse driver[COLOR=blue ! important][COLOR=blue ! important][/COLOR][/COLOR]. Now, the machines we have do not use wireless mice and all of them are nearly identical. I've looked through the event viewer but cannot find any sort of task that comes from group policy that locks the machine. I did find eventID 124 "Task triggered by locking the workstation" but its not clear that this is coming from group policy. Regardless, the machine in question never has a log in the event viewer about this task.
