SP2 Installation Horrors Vista Home Premium
Aug 9, 2009My new laptop came with Vista Home Premium, and the hard drive had been partitioned into two equal partitions. On Friday I was offered Vista SP2 from the update centre. To my cost I agreed to install it. The first thing it did was create a restore point. The installation then failed part way through as "some features could not be updated". I was then told that it would be rolled back to the most recent restore point. I clicked on proceed and went away to let it do its stuff. Some time later I returned to find the same error message, and clicked on proceed a second time. This appeared to work, except that when I logged in, it had restored the PC to its initial state, not the most recent (or for that matter any) restore point, and all traces of the software I had installed since then - and my wireless connection - had vanised. It took me hours to set everthing up again. A quick Google came up with this: Is this correct? If so it's going to be a rather common situation. And I reiterate that this offered by Microsoft Update. I didn't go out there actively looking for it. And what's the point of restore points if they don't work?

Mar 23, 2008After a fresh installation of Vista Home Premium, my pc freezes randomly. If i decide to wait it out it magically unfreezes but this is a constant habit. It leaves the pc clock frozen at the time of the freeze. Suprisingly it lets me play full screen games but nothing else. Reinstalled multiple times, downloaded all updates with no change. Perhaps my motherboard isnt compatible? or my graphics card is just dumb?

Have been playing Live Search Club and have enough points to get Vista Ultimate. I assume this is full version, not upgrade. Can I use this CD to upgrade to Ultimate or would I have to do clean install and then reinstall all programs and data files?

Feb 25, 2008I am getting a new PC. The 64 bit OEM version of Home Premium is only $10 more, and I will have the hardware to run it. However, there are many that warn against the 64 bit version, and the last thing I would want is to find out that some hardware does not work, or that there are problems with our home network. I am also worried about not being able to run 16 bit programs and bits and pieces without proper signatures. Apparently the 64 bit version rejects these. The best alternative would be to buy the 64 bit version, but install and run it as 32 bit untill such time when I progressively replace hardware, the other PC's etc. Is this possible? I have heard that it can be run as 32 bits, but is this across the system, or is it on application by application basis.

Windows Home Premium Black Screen
Apr 24, 2008I've had my HP laptop for almost about a year, and two days ago I started it up and logged in. Once logged in the screen went completely black except for the cursor. No message, no text, just black with a cursor. At first I thought it was a crash, but after several reboots still nothing. Eventually I tried Ctrl-Alt-Delete and got task manager, and then managed to get some apps up including a web browser. This doesn't sound like the descriptions of reduced functionalty mode I've read here and elsewhere. Is it? I tried going back to the oldest restore point, 2 weeks ago (I've had two auto-updates since then) but no change. Also tried running slui.exe as was suggested in anothe post here and all it says is "Activation Successful".What's going on and how can I get my system back?

Oct 24, 2009Attached are the debug logs. The crashes started happening on the Thursday morning of Oct. 22. The first one happened at around 3 AM. The second one, on the 23rd, happened at around 2 AM. The 3rd one, on the 24th, happened at around 2 AM as well. The 4th one was less than a hour later than the 3rd one, when I was doing something with the kernel memory dump file. Perhaps I was opening it. The 3rd and 4th ones were the ones that I actually saw happening. The 3rd one happened when I was sitting there, but not doing anything to the computer at the moment. The 4th one happened when the computer was not being responsive when I was trying to view the kernel dump file, or when I was trying to close the Notepad2 that I was using to view the kernel dump file..........

Oct 19, 2009I am using a Dell XPS 1330 machine running Vista Home Premium.
I needed to replace some files(tcpip.sys,tcpreg.sys etc)in the system 32 folder with their new versions. But Vista wont let me copy them to the destination folder(system 32) citing admin reasons.
Read a bit and found out that "Administrator" account is by default disabled in Vista.
So ran the following 2 commands from command prompt to enable Admin account and set the admin password.
net user administrator password
net user administrator activate:yes
After that logged off and was expecting to see the admin login option on the welcome screen. But it didnt come.
Actually in the control panel user accounts I can see myself as Administrator....but I guess that is some administrator with limited powers and there is a greater/stronger/divine/all-conquering "Administrator" above this crappy admin category to which I right now belong and which Microsoft has due to some inexplicable reasons kept undercover. So plz plz help me and lemme know how to get that all-conquering admin to come on my welcome screen so that i can log in and try out what I want.

May 31, 2008I upgraded from Vista Home Premium to Ultimate using our Microsoft Actiona Pack License that says you must have a previous version to use it. It required that I do a FULL install instead of an Upgrade. Vista Home Premium Can Not Reinstall
Jan 17, 2009While working in Vista Home Premium I experienced a recent system failure and I do not know if it was caused by a virus. I had the AVG Free Edition installed and it was up to date. I decided to perform a clean reinstall using the Vista DVD Installer, but at a certain point a message appears onscreen informing that Vista can not be installed, and that some required files may be missing or corrupt. It also points that there might be a hard disk failure. However, I was able to perform a clean reinstall for openSuse to keep working with my PC. Before the Vista system failure, the double booting process had been working well for more than a year.

Oct 13, 2008I have a problem that I am unable to download things. I click download and the bar fills up with blue and it says saving to desktop, but when I click to the desktop, nothing has downloaded. I have tried using 'run' instead of save and the blue bar fills up and it says saving to temporary folder, but then nothing. I can't open e-mail attachements that need downloading or download any thing from the net at all.I have tried several system restores to various different dates and got something to save to the desktop once, but now anything I try and download doesn't download.I have tried running the computer in safe mode with networking but the problem still occurs. I put in my product key and it works fine, but when it asks where I want it installed, it says "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style." Feb 26, 201032-bit Vista Home Premium. Have Windows Live OneCare installed, but am getting a msg that the service is disabled. I cannot get into services either through the start search box or through the control panel. If I use the box, the service never displays and I can no longer use the start menu unless I go to task manager and log off and then log back on. If I use the control panel, it just sits there with the revolving blue circle. If I open task manager and click on the services tab there is a service listed called OcHealthMon which is described as Window Live One Care Health Monitor and it says the status is stopped. If I right click and select start service I get the msg 'The operation could not be completed. Access is denied"
If I boot in safe mode I can go into services, but it says that OneCare has an Automatic startup type and is already started. I have MalwareBytes installed on the PC and it finds no malicious items in safe mode, but in normal startup the desktop icon has a litle security center emblem in the lower right hand corner. I cannot open the security center from the control panel - blue wheel again.
Making Vista Ultimate More Like Home Premium
May 18, 2008I have XP Pro on my desktop PC & I know that I can stop & disable services. I also know that some services depend on other services to run. So, I have some questions about Home Premium versus Ultimate. First question is: Will Home Premium allow one to stop & disable any services - any services at all?
I want to build a PC & I think that I'd be perfectly happy with Home Premium. But, I might want to try Virtual PC & I know that I need Ultimate for that. I assume that Ultimate is like XP Pro & will allow me to stop & disable services. Am I correct?
For example, I will be the only person using the PC so I don't need Group Policy. Can that service be stopped & disabled? My PC will never be joined to a domain. Can that service be stopped & disabled? I might use the file encryption service. So, in other words, I'd like to make Ultimate more like Home Premium. Can I do that by turning off certain Ultimate features? What are Ultimate Extras?
