HDD Light Always On And Boot Up
Mar 9, 2008why my hard drive light is always on, and at boot up it takes a while for it to detect my hdd and dvd rom? there are no other added products likes a printer or none of that stuff.

Boot: Green Light On But The Hard Drive Just Beeps
Jul 1, 2008my husband's computer won't boot at all. The green light comes on but the hard drive just beeps. It looks at the cd drive but that is it. Is there anything I can do to fix this. I don't have any recovery disks.

If I open a full screen window (such as Firefox), my taskbar goes back to the normal black color, but if I don't have a full screen window it is that light gray color.

Jun 10, 2008I have a Dell with a 500aGb hard drive and decided to ask for a diskcheck at next boot with the repair option. It started 25 hours ago and the screen is blank. The HD light flicks once per second. How long should I leave it like this before pulling the plug? Is this an expected time to run?

Sep 21, 2009first off let me give you the spec of my pc, im running Windows 64bit, MSI Dual Quadcore processor, 8 gigs of ram, 2 500gb harddrives, 2 gforce 9800vid cards and creative soundblaster soundcard. Anyways this problem has happened last time after doing ALL these windows updates, service pack 2, the whole works. MY harddrive light stays SOLID now, even when idle, I jsut got home from work after an 8hour day, and its still on? What is going on? I ran virus checks with AVG free editon that came with my pc, I keep everything up todate on a regular basis. Is this normal? It even sounds like I can hear my harddrive running, this is really starting to freak me out.

Apr 7, 2009Every second or so my disk access light on the pc flashes - Windows XP Premium SP1. I have tried every tool I can think of to try and find out why but I am at a loss. This is my fourth install and on the first 2 this didnt happen. I have switched off everything I can think of that may be causing this (prefetch, defender, indexing etc) bit it still goes on. Is there any way I can track down what is happening? Vista was installed 7 days ago.

Feb 12, 2009here's my problem I installed Vista 64 onto my computer and after it reboots it goes through bios and then nothing. I get a screen with a flickering dash - like that. Now Im thinking it is a HDD issue or driver issue. Bios detects it and my dvd burner. There both Sata and the HDD is a WD 250gb Sata. After Bios goes through its check I get no HDD activate the light doesn't flicker or anything. Now when I boot from the VISTA cd it detects the drive and also see the installation as well.
Ive also tried installing it another way with my old DVD Rom which is IDE because I heard if you do a fresh install that it has a hard time detecting with sata which is the HDD if you have 2 sata connected. Still the same thing i get the flicker. Also I did partion and formated the HDD as well. Im waiting for my friend to bring me the driver disk to install the Mobo drivers and hopefully that resolves it. Also I would like to add everything was working fine before I did this I just wanted to to a house cleaning and wipe my drive. . Bios is also been flashed and up to date....currently for space issues when I was tinkering with the Mobo I have a Gforce 6800GS in there but what I usually use is a His Radeon 4870 just to big to work around with.

Feb 19, 2009when my PC is on, life is good. Everything works. No problems. Vista is set to shut down the power after 30 minutes and put the PC into sleep mode. At that point, the PC seems 'Off' until I hit a key/move the mouse; and it 'wakes up'. It seems like, sometimes, the PC will not wake up. when I hit the keyboard, moved the mouse - nothing. I hit the power button (held it in for 5+ seconds), hit the reset button...and still nothing. I tried unplugging it and plugging it back in. NOTHING. So, I opened my case and gave my PSU a fairly gentle tap and I noticed some tiny LEDs on the MB light up. At that point, I hit the power button - and the PC came to life. Vista said it was 'resuming windows' but everything was crawling about about 10% of the speed it should be. I had to reboot, after rebooting, everything was fine.
It does wake up sometimes though, sometimes it doesn't. When it doesn't, the only way I can seem to get it to turn back on is to 'bang' a bit on the PSU; but the power has never gone 'out' while I was playing on the computer (which is a lot of time). If the PSU was bad and there is a short or something and when I bang on it, it reconnects....I can't explain why it never 'shorts out' or comes loose while I'm using the PC.
If it were a bug with Vista, I could see how or why it might work sometimes and not other times, and why the power never dies while I'm using the PC....but I can't understand how my 'tap' on the PSU could get it to turn back on. Basically - I have no idea WTF is going on. A new PSU would be ~$100 dollars and I'd hate to replace it if there is nothing wrong. my tap on the PSU is not affecting the connection between the PSU and Motherboard. The PSU is at the bottom of my case and my tap is really not very hard at all.

Jan 1, 2009I went to turn it on this morning, I just had a black screen showing the following words;
Press F2 to run
Press F11 to boot menu
Auto detecting PRI Master Atapai CDROM.
It then went to reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key. I went into the BIOS to change the boot order and inserted my Vista home premium 32bit. I then got windows is loading in files. After a short while I got the black start up screen with Microsoft Corporation but after a few seconds it just froze. Moments later it went to a blue screen with white writing part of which said the following; A PROBLEM HAS BEEN DETECTED AND WINDOWS HAS BEEN SHUT DOWN TO PREVENT DAMAGE TI YOUR COMPUTER.

Feb 10, 2009The Hard Drive LED light on my Sony Vaio keeps blinking EVERY SECOND. When it's really quiet I can hear it too, it's constantly writing. Constantly. I did my research - read all the threads on the net and so far I have disabled:

Windows search
Superfetch
System Restore
Readyboost
Defragmenter
I have uninstalled google desktop.
The system is totally virus and spyware free, and the anti-virus is not scanning (schedule scan disabled). All Vista updates are installed. Nothing has helped. I've run out of things to disable. I'm running Vista Business SP1, Dual Core 2.2 Ghz, 3 Gb RAM.

Dual Boot And XP:stuck With The Windows Vista Boot Loader
Mar 23, 2008I have windows xp installed right now and I dual booted with vista by re-partitioning my hard drive. After encountering problems with vista I delted the vista partition and resized the xp partition back to it's original size. I am now stuck with the windows vista boot loader which persistantly telling me that the windows vista files are not present etc. etc. Is there any way that I can delted the vista bootloader and go back to using the xp bootloader?

Boot Failure - Dual Boot Situation
Mar 23, 2008I have more or less completed all the driver upgrades and windows updates but I keep getting repeated boot failures of Vista. I can always get into Safe mode but in Normal mode the boot fails just after the first spash screen at the point when the screen goes blank to be replaced by the small circular Vista logo. After 2 or 3 attempts it succeeds to load but then the problem seems to reoccur, particularly when I have been back to XP for a while.
I had a similar problem with XP but that seems to have sorted itself out. I have tired looking in the logs for faults and failures but no clues there. I am running an ASUS P5E MB with Intel Quad 6600, 4Gig RAM, GeForce 8800GT and 2x250Gig HDs.
Fix Boot Logo, BOOT Screen No Works
Apr 16, 2008This is the best install I have ever done (or was)…I did a fresh install and followed a tweak which was to very enlightening, to say the least. From there I have been to a few other sites and moved on to fully customizing my desktop/login and……well…this is where I stuffed up…My BOOT screen no longer works properly, even with the original “winload.exe.mui” file replaced.
I downloaded and used “Vista Boot Logo Generator” I loved the results on my last install…It worked well. Upon deciding to do a fresh install with Tweaking in mind, I simply coppied over a Boot logo I made previously after allowing permissions and all that as well as changing the NO GUI in msconfig…ect….BUT......

Jul 29, 2009i am new to this forum but i have problem with my system bootup. my system takes too long to boot and it started 3days ago. it takes about 120secs at bootscreen alone. i believe it is not my start up programs as it takes about 3 secs to start up from login page. i donot use any third party bootscreen. normally, my system boots in 30 secs but now i am facing a lot of problem which i do not understand. i have tried all the tutorials in this forum relating to bootup problems but found no luck.

Boot Time And Boot Drive (not Listed)
Jul 1, 2008I've had Vista x64 installed for about 2 full months now and I've recently begun having a lot of problems. One being: 187 seconds. What the hell? Before you ask, here are my specs. Lots of fast memory, a fast processor, 7200RPM boot drive (not listed), and ****ing awful performance. What gets me is that the delayed boot time is before I even see the "Welcome" screen.
My current boot time distribution:
1. BIOS does all its fancy stuff very quickly (about 6-7 seconds or so)
2. I get to my boot loader and it defaults to Vista after 5 seconds (dual-booting Vista/Ubuntu).
3. I then see the Vista loading screen (black screen with green loading bar) for about 4-5 seconds................

Mar 23, 2008I have installed Vista on my C: disk. After that I installed XP on D: disk. Now I can't boot Vista anymore.
I tried with boot.ini. I've read that there's a program called bcdedit.exe. I tried to make that one work on XP, but I failed. I don't have Vista's DVD, and I'm trying to avoid installing XP again. If there's any way around...I would be gratefull! (Is there any way I can edit bcdedit.exe in XP?)
