Windows Vista has many new icon sizes. Using a simple mouse scroll wheel trick that was primarily used in Internet Explorer to change the text size for years, it is now possible to change the icon sizes of almost any window you are in, including the desktop.
While on your desktop, hold down the CTRL key and scroll your mouse up for larger and down for smaller icons. You can make your icons very small or extremely large as shown in the two examples below.....
There is no other feature that I have heard so much positive and negative feedback about than ClearType screen font smoothing. Some users think this feature is great while other complain that it makes the text blurry and hard to read. If you are one of those that do not like ClearType then this tweak is for you.
Open Registry Editor.
Navigate through HKEY_CURRENT_USER, Control Panel and Desktop.
Set FontSmoothingType to 1....

View 3 Replies View RelatedBought and installed WEB EASY 7. Ran fine no problems. Shut down system and when I started up later and executed WEB Easy it said that it could not fine the serial code. Put the serial code in again and it ran fine, until the next shutdown and restart. Worked about 6 weeks with WEB EASY (Avanquest) to resolve and they could not. Their final fix was to format the disc and install a clean Vista with all updates.
I have not problem with any other software that I have purchased. I have uninstalled and reinstalled WEB EASY from my account with Admin Priv as well as Installed with the "Hidden Administrator" logon. Avanquest has of course said it is Microsofts problem and hung up. Apparently when I do an initial install and enter the serial code as requested it puts it in the worng place or somewhere that later users, including the Administrator, does not have access to; or the prgrram itself
is locked out of.
I want to unistall IE from my machine ehich has Vista, I know that we can do that by going to unistalling updates, but I can't fine it there, is there any other way to unistall it.

The issue is the screen goes nearly black, i.e. everything is still displayed but just really dark, as if the brightness on the monitor has been turned right down. However, the mouse cursor still appears bright white. It seems to occur pretty randomly. It has happened with both the default video drivers and the ATI beta drivers, and it has also occured both before and after the logon screen.
View 5 Replies View RelatedWe have XP computers and an external hard drive on a network, all working fine. Just got a new Vista computer right out of the box and I can not get it to do anything with the network and none of the other computers can see it either. There are no fancy setups, just a small business network. There isnt even an internet connection we need to deal with. With Vista, all i can see is an "unidentified network" as being seen but it doesnt seem to do anything with it.

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity.

Im upgrading my computer of 5 years within the next 2 weeks. I decided to build a sick machine (Intel i7, DDR3, GTX 280 all the goodies.) With doing so, im going to put 64 bit vista on it. Now as far as my use of the computer, well its simple, gaming. Im usually stuck to the World of Warcraft, FPSs, and RTS. I have no idea what im getting into with vista. With what I'm using the computer for, how should I go about doing stuff on windows to prepare the computer. By this I mean, what drivers do I need, what other software should I install. What do I basically need to make the computer run fine with Vista-64

1) all working ok for many hours, except when
2) Vista machine goes to sleep mode. On wakeup, no connection. Network SSID is visible, good signal, but repeated attempts to connect fail.
3) Other computers connect to router, and internet fine. They can also standby/poweroff and restart fine. Still connected.
4) Reboot Vista computer, no help. Network settings look normal, just no connection to wireless router. Incredibly irritating Vista diagnostic tool suggests I connect to a another network, or recycle the router. (If the router was close enough to be easily recycled, I would just plug in an ethernet cable. But it is not, and I am tired of unnecessary trips to the basement.)
5) Power cycle router, and everything fine again.
One new computer using Vista Home. Installed wireless network card and ran software. Found and established connection to wireless network in the office. Then....I setup the network to be secured, connected with a Win XP computer with no problems using the correct key. Did the same process with the Vista computer, found the network, asked for key, entered correct key and have limited connection. Reset everything on network. Switched back to unsecured and hooked right up. Disabled firewall, the only thing running is McAfee Total Protection, no firewalls.
View 5 Replies View RelatedIve just had broadband connected to my house. Currently I have a network consisting of four computers connected through an internal switch on one of my computers in one of the bedrooms for ease of cabling. The computer with the broadband modem has been chosen as it is newest and is closest to the telephone line socket. It has two network cards, one connected to the modem and the other to the rest of the network. Independantly, the network connections are running fine (all computers can see each other and transfer data properly) and the internet connection is working well for the computer connected directly to the modem.
The network is setup using Static IP Addresses 192.168.0.1-192.168.0.4 (With 0.1 being for the host) and the modem is connected using a different set of IP addresses. I have also set the internet connection sharing options according to what is required on the microsoft website for both the internet host and clients. I have both Norton Antivirus and Zonealarm activated on all computers but have set them up to allow access to each other. My problem therefore is, despite my broadband connection working on the one computer, and my network connections working, I cannot get ICS to work.

View 4 Replies View Related1. Integrate Dreamscene to Aero -Most home users like Vista Ultimate because of Ultimate Extras, Complete PC Backup and Restore, and BitLocker. Dreamscene happens to be a popular feature of Ultimate, but if that's all a user wants, it's not very wise to spend 100$ more than Home Premium or Business just to get Extras. There is also an Extra that lets you play Poker, but there are 3rd party software/websites that can let you do that.
2. Screensaver Fine-tuning -I've seen it before: you have to play with some values in the registry to change some settings in some Windows screensavers, namely Ribbons, Bubbles, Mystify. However, for the inexperienced user who just wants bigger bubbles or thinner ribbons, it's quite hard to follow instructions that assume the reader is an experienced computer user.
3. Where's Luna? -Some Vista users just miss the Luna theme that XP came with. Personally, I miss it as well, and I doubt that most users would like to buy
WindowsBlinds just to get XP look on Vista. The Luna theme should be available for download. Maybe as an "Optional" update in Windows Update. Or, as a download in the Microsoft website.
4. Change color in Windows Vista Basic Theme -The generic light blue color scheme that the Vista Basic theme has isn't very attractive. There should be options to change the frame color so that computers unable to run the Vista Standard or Aero theme can also enjoy the customizable interface. It can also help laptops by not making it a hassle to switch between Aero/Standard and Basic, which uses less GPU and CPU power. The "ColorizationColor" registry entry is deleted whenever you switch to Basic through Personalization. It saves the user time to get that perfect shade of Green, Violet, or Yellow that was lost due to someone changing the theme to Vista Basic. If possible, on computers capable of running the Vista Standard or Aero theme, the "ColorizationColor" registry entry should not be deleted, so that the user will not have to fine-tune sliders to get that perfect shade.
5. Additional Aero Effect...........
I have a fairly new desktop (8 months old) with windows xp. On another partition I installed Vista Business, then updated the chipset drivers for my system. The network adapter was not picked up so I installed it manually with the updated drivers from the manufacturer (integrated adapter) which seemed to work (it made a connection) but when I re-booted there was no network connection and the light on the card is not longer on. In the device manager it says the card is working properly. I tried reinstalling the adapter driver but to no avail. My network/internet connection works fine in XP. I'm suspecting it may be some sort of security issue or possibly something with the drivers although I contacted the manufacturer of the machine (Systemax) and they said they've had no reported problems with the drivers.
View 9 Replies View RelatedFor some reason my Windows DVD Maker has ceased to work when it used to work perfectly. I am able to add files to burn but when I hit next and go to where I can change the settings before burning it says that "windows dvd player has stopped working and windows is checking to see if there is a solution to the problem" I then get a message box stating "a problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
This program used to work just fine but stopped working and I do not get a notification of what the problem is or a code or something from Windows. I've recently updated to SP1 using Vista on an Acer 5570 laptop. I've tried changing the speed and placing the video on my desktop instead of pulling from folders but that makes no difference. I've changed file extensions, downloaded other programs to convert files to different types thinking that's what was wrong. Nothing has worked. I can view just fine using Windows Media Player so I'm not sure why I can no longer burn using this program......
I have enabled file sharing on my home network so that my wife's XP machine can access photos and music stored on my Vista Home Premium box. Also share printers. I have set up non-password protected sharing, and it works fine overall - I can see everything she shares, and vice versa, printers work, etc. The only problem we're having is the photos. Whenever I add new photos they don't show up until I re-share the folder. If I put new photos in a sub-folder, the sub-folder is visible and can be opened without errors, but it appears empty until I re-share the entire photo folder. I cannot find any information about this problem, but it just occurred to me that I gave the guest account read-only access to the photo folder instead of full permissions. I guess that's one thing to try when I get home, but I would like to keep it read-only so that nothing happens to the pictures accidentally.

I know some sites are slower than others but, as of late, the internet seems to slow down to a crawl yet, when I do the speed test, I end up scoring higher or just where I am supposed to be at. I am also using OpenDNS for my dns address and this has help a bit but still, I will like more from it since when I download a file, it does it fairly quick.
