I have an external harddrive that runs with Fat 32 but it wont connect to my vista laptop without reformating, which would wipe my harddrive clear. i just want it to connect. to read the files.

I have 2 wireless cable modems. One an older Ambit 2000 wireless and another is a docis 3 Ubee. I'm beta testing the D3 modem for work and can hard wire into it fine, connect wireless with winXP just fine and on my ipod touch fine. Vista will see it, connect to it, but I get Local only. This is where I'm stuck. Vista will connect just fine to my other wireless connection just fine, using that one right now. Just through the D3 modem it wont connect to the internet.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am troubleshooting a Vista machine that will not connect to the internet. I share an internet connection at home through a router using dhcp. I can confirm that it works as I have currently 4 machines connected (3 wired, 1 wireless) and they all connect just fine. By the way I am using a wired connection for said machine. The output of ping and an ip address states:.......This machine was working about a week ago. Nothing was added (hardware/software) that I know of. Or at least that the kids will admit too!
I did note one occurrence, and that is, when DHCP gets an ip from my router it is 169.254.***.*** where as my router is configured to begin the adresses in 192.168.3.100 and up... Further, I don't receive a DNS from DHCP. If I manually input an IP (in my range/subnet of course) I get the same output from command line and Network and Sharing Center......I know this issue has to do with something in windows and not the hardware because I have booted off of a KNOPPIX linux cd and it connects just fine I am currently scanning with Malwarebytes, AVG, then Spybot so I will update if anything changes upon completion.
I am considering purchasing a Dell Inspiron 1525 with Vista Home on it. I work at an office 2 days per week and will need to connect to their server. It is my understanding that Vista Home will not be able to connect to their server. SO....I would need to install my XP Pro onto the new computer. How hard is it to do this and is it not recommended? (I'd like to keep Vista on the laptop as well, possibly as a dual boot? Unless that would just cause more issues.)

I have enabled the Remote Destop options on both OS's but neither machine is being found/listed in the Remote Desktop Connection screen.
Also i have opened up my XP remote desktop connection port on my router, but i cannot find my port number in Vista for remote desktop.
i build my pc with 2 hard drives so i could intall vista 32 and vista x64. installed vista 32, no problems. then i installed vista x64 and i can't connect to the internet, that just on vista x64. vista 32 rus internet with no problems.
View 9 Replies View RelatedThis should not be this difficult! However, 3 weeks later and I'm still not connecting. It seems I've tried about every suggestion I can find. I will attempt to recapitulate in brief but I'm sure I have forgotten things I've tried. I have 2 and printer to a router. One wireless one direct. Another wireless xp occasionally. Works great no problem. I am trying to get just one to connect to the Vista. The Vista has been tried both wireless and cable to router.
Installed the XP responder patch. Created users with identical names and passwords. Configured NetBios on Vista. Turned off and on TCP layer 6. Re-setup networking, same workgroup. Enabled sharing, etc. Only windows firewall, tried both off and on. There is likely more but I have forgotten now. They are visible on each others full maps and they ping each other fine. On the XP when I select the Vista pc I get not accessible, no permission. On Vista I cannot see the XP except in full map view. Maybe it's something simple but I am stumped.
I am trying to connect my new Vista Home PC with my work XP PC in order to share some files and a USB modem connected internet link (on the Vista PC). I am using an ethernet to ethernet cable which has previously worked with my old XP PC and the same work PC. For some reason, I cannot get my Vista PC to allocate any IP addresses (you can tell I'm not very good with network settings...).
I don't have a router to use as a DNS, the PCs have been in the same workgroup but it made no difference. I can ping localhost on the Vista PC. There is no nice wizard to set up a wired connection on Vista, just wireless, dialup, VPN or connect to the internet. Grrrrrr.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am running Vista Business, and am trying to setup faxing with Vista's built-in Windows Fax and Scan. I do not have a modem, and so I'm trying to connect to the fax on a Windows Server 2003 R2 server. This is a "standard" Server 2003, that is, it is *not* SBS (Small Business Server).
The server is a domain controller, but the Vista PC is not on the domain. However, both computers are on the same local network/subnet. On Vista I can map a drive that's on the server (providing the proper server credentials). I can even "Add new printer" to Vista by selecting network printer and entering the server address & shared fax name, then entering the proper server credentials. So this rules out any network issues, and at least mostly rules out authentication issues (since I'm able to connect to the server disk and printer resources if I provide a server administrator logon).
However, from Vista's "Windows Fax and Scan", when I try to create a fax account, it prompts me for the server name, and when I enter the server, it tells me that I don't have the appropriate permissions and to contact the fax administrator. This happens whether I enter \servername, \servernamefaxname, servername, faxname, \faxname. Also, I have made sure to run Windows Fax and Scan as an administrator, that is, right-click/run as administrator.
If I try to print to the fax printer that seemed to have been mapped successfully (that was mapped with "add printer" as described above), it basically takes me to the same step to add a fax account, at which point it tells me I don't have the appropriate permissions when I enter the server name. Note that when I "added" the printer, it prompted me for the credentials, and then successfully mapped the printer. Now in trying to use it to print (fax) something, it behaves as if I still need to create a fax account and tells me I have no permissions (and there is no option to enter a user/password).
I had windows XP pro and i bought windows vista home premium upgrade, when i went to install it it said that i couldn't upgrade it. So i followed directions on how to do a custom clean install, where you install vista without typing in the product key and without getting updates then you pick what OS you have and do the custom installation, then you install again (2nd time) and choose upgrade instead of custom and go through the process again.
The problem is after installing it the first time, I couldn't connect to the internet, so I couldn't install it a second time. I have an ASUS PQ5 PRo motherboard and when i start up there is this thing called express gate, in express gate I can use the internet but not when i enter Vista. When I put in the PQ5 Pro DVD vista says it can't open it. Also my XP PRO may have been 64bit, and now I am on Vista32 bit and the disck wont work.
I think the internet is a driver problem, if i go to the asus website on a diff computer and get the ASUS drivers put them on a USB and then open them on vista should this work? WHat drivers do I need? Just the LAN one? Also if the Asus DVD wouldnt start up will that mean that I wont be able to open the drivers on the flash drive too?
My new computer has Windows Vista, old computer had Win XP. I want to trnasfer all my data files from the XP machine to the Vista Machine. I konw about master and slave drives, whne I opened the Vista Machine, it has only two SATA connectors in the motherboard an one with the 40-pin? connector the ribbon goes to the DVD-ROM. can i connect my IDE drive to the motherboard using the DVD-ROM ribbon? should I set the XP drive as slave?

both firewalls are off, they are connected to a modem via LAN caples. the second time i tried, my vista was also connected to the internet via a dial up modem.. i wanted to see if atleast i could get internet from my vista over to my xp but that didnt work............

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have two programs, H&R Block's TaxCut & Orca, from www.pdc.wa.gov, which will not connect to upload data on Vista Home Premium 64. TaxCut will not register, will not update, and will not efile on Vista. I can open a browser and access the sites but no luck getting the programs to upload data with Vista. I was about to paper file my taxes when I tried my wife's computer with XP. It is virtually the same computer, except for OS, hooked to the same DSL via the same modem running the same Firewall / anti-virus program, Kaspersky. The programs work flawlessly on XP but not on Vista.

We have a local workgroup setup and five or six departments have been give net connectivity. All our computers have xp installed, and when a new computer is loaded with xp, it used to detect the internet connection straight away, and would connect to the net. Now I have been asked to use vista so that slowly our organization can migrate to vista. I loaded vista on another partition on my computer. Everything was okay. But vista has not recognized my net connection. It has been asking for isp username and password, which were never asked by xp. So now
1. How to make vista understand that I have already a LAN card on my motherboard and my computer is connected to the net through the central server? Our net administrator would not divulge the username and password. He asked me to find out other means:"When xp can, why can't vista recognize?" was his question.

All the obvious things have been taken care of (my computer is on etc etc, the wireless light is on etc etc I have other computers woring wirelessly on the same connection and so forth) and it just won't recognize any networks. I went into device manager to see what was going on with the WiFi. It tells me that I need to turn on my wireless, but it is on. I went in and tried to disable it and reenable it. My computer promptly froze. After I forced it to end task I went back to look at it. It tells me that my no drivers are installed for this device, but when I look at the drivers they are there. It also tells me that my invisible drivers are up to date. Little lost as to what is wrong with this piece of machinery.
I have two PC's running Vista Home Premium. Both have SP1, and both have sharing and printer sharing installed. I can access the wife's pc from mine, but I cannot access mine from her's. If I type in my pc name "\jdesktopusers" it will pop up, but if I physically try and click on my computer's name in the network window it says \jdesktop is not accessible. View 9 Replies View RelatedI While ago i connected My xp pc [client] to my vista pc, but just recently my xp PC just disappeared from the network, i tried reconnecting it back by following some guides that i found on Google but still i got nothing, So far My Vista pc can only see the xp PC trough the network map, but when i click on network it doesn't appear at all. I dont know if im doing something wrong or if one of my PC's is causing it. This is what i tried to reconnect them again so far:
XP:
1. Control panel > Network and internet connections > set up or change your home or small office network > run trough wizard name my PC and Workgroup name.
2. Right click my C: drive > sharing and security.. > select* share this folder.
Vista:
1. Turn on: Network discovery, File sharing, public folder sharing.
Turn off: Password protected sharing.
2. Right click* Computer > properties > change settings [under "PC name, domain...] > change workgroup name to same name as XP's.
We bought a new dlink Gigabyte unmanaged switch,installed it and now the vista machines connects fine to the network but not to the internet. if i go ipconfig /release and /renew it works for a bit but then goes down again. The Windows XP machines are working perfect to the network and internet. What Can cause this problem with vista.

Is there something I'm missing with Vista and wireless, I have to different wireless networks and I now have a Vista laptop in each network that I can't connect to. All firmware/drivers is up to date on the laptop and the routers and I still can't get them to connect but I have no problem with the XP. Side note, I have had both laptops connected and surfing the Web and having access to network shares and what not but they have both since been dropped. I'd be happy to just focus on one of them.
