FW Shut Off, Basic Running Really Slow

May 8, 2010

I've got a 6 year Compaq old laptop running Vista Basic, 1.5 GB of RAM, most WU's are current, MBAM, SAS, CA Security Suite with the FW shut off. Windows Firewall, Windows Defender. The system is very slow for file/program commands (Open, close, shutdowns, etc.). For instance, if I right click on Start and select `Explore' it takes 4-6 seconds for Explore to open up, and when it does open up a green status indication running across the path window just creeps along to the right very slowly. Is this some sort of an indexing problem?

Same thing with Task Manager. Internet browsing is ok speedwise, although when I run Brighthouse network's Road Runner Speed test, the results are poor (3500 kbps downloading). If I do this test on my Acer Desktop or laptop, the speed is over 9000 kbps). Running Firefox (but it's chewing up about 150 MB of process space)...........

Diagnose A Slow Vista Home Basic Machine?

Feb 25, 2009

A friend found out that I have a Vista computer so he brought me his wife's computer to find out why it is so slow. I have no problems with mine but this Vista Home Basic PC is ungodly slow. Just to open an Explorer window takes over 90 seconds. I scheduled a checkdisk and ran it on the next reboot. I defragged and ran the disk cleanup wizard. I downloaded and reinstalled the ATI video drivers after seeing an eror message about ATI. It is slightly faster but not enough to make any difference to the user. Where do I find the diagnostics, or logs or something that can tell me what is slowing it down so that I can fix it? I couldn't find a diagnostic on the eMachine site. My last option will be to reformat and start over but I'd rather not do that if there is a way to fix it instead. It's an eMachine with only 512 MB RAM, but it did run much faster when new. Intel Pentium 3.0 GHz, 160 GB HDD. Also the wireless card is very slow, but the wired connection is pretty fast for downloading.

Stopped Running And Will Shut Down

Jan 11, 2008

I have one program that I'm always having to restart. The program seems to be running just fine, then all of a sudden this little note pops up saying that the program has stopped running and will shut down. And it does. I just started using Vista about a month ago so I'm not really up on it that much. Does anyone have any ideas about this.

Slow Shut Down

Feb 6, 2009

I have two fairly new (14 months and 10 months) Dell Inspiron 530 desktops. Both run Vista Home Premium 32-bit. Not networked. The only hardware differences between the two is in the processor and ram - one is a core 2 duo with 2 GB ram; the other is a core 2 quad with 4 GB ram. The quad, right from the start, has always been quick to shut down - about 12 seconds after the Shutting Down screen appears. The duo, on the other hand, has always been slow to shut down - about 120 seconds. Is there some diagnostic information I can pull from each system to compare? It seems I'm in a good position to troubleshoot the slow shutdown with this arrangement, but I can't quite figure out how to pull it all together.

Slow Shut Down

Apr 27, 2008

I am running Vista Home Premium 32 bit on a very good spec laptop that is less than a year old. Originally it would shut down in about 30 seconds but now is taking anything up to 90 seconds. Are there some obvious things I can check out or do to try and reduce the time it takes to shut down. My computer "housekeeping" is excellent so it regularly gets a scan disc / defrag / anti virus etc / registry clean up / cookies cleared etc etc.If I only load up and connect to the net but dont open or run any programmes then it will shut down in under 30 seconds but not if I have been running my usual items - explorer / firefox / Poker / and a couple of office documents.

Windows Slow Shut Down

Apr 4, 2009

I have an HP530 notebook with standard features and 2GB RAM. The system comes with a bulit in Windows Vista Home edition. For past few months the system has a painfully slow shutdown, in which has taken from 30 minutes to 9 hours to shutdown after i pressed the shutdown button on the start menu. But lately, since last few weeks, upon pressing shutdown, the system gets in to the logging off mode and never shuts down. I have left it for around 12hours one day and it did not finish logging of. I now have to manually give it a hard reboot by pushing down the power button. Is this a known problem or is there any knows solution to this problem.

I realize I should have sent the thing back to the factory right away, but I didn't. I would like to reinstall the operating system and start fresh to see if the same issues occur: automatically shuting down, blue / black screen, clock consistantly loosing time, printers not working, yadda, yadda, yadda. Computer Running Slow

Jan 9, 2010

I am running Windows Vista 32 bit edition and the last weeks my computer has slowed down to a snail’s pace, i have checked for viruses and it is clean. I have run CCleaner and to remove all the rubbish but it is still very slow.

I even have trouble booting from a Vista boot DVD, it take approx 5 minutes just to get the welcome screen up that’s before any OS has booted.

I have a CPU monitor on the sidebar and the CPU and the Memory usage is up and down from nothing to 100 % all the time.

And when i do get the computer to work it is very slow and i can only open one window at a time

Computer Running Too SLOW

May 11, 2008

i've been running my computer pretty much without problems. Recently I have noticed a real slow down in performance. I currently have Spybot S&D, and the purchased version of AVG installed. Thinking that perhaps one of these programs may be causing some kind of problem, I disabled both of them, but to no avail.

I run spyware searches and virus searches daily, which never really show up any thing of concern. I delete cookies etc on a daily basis too. My computer doesnt need defragged.
Could anyone give me any ideas as to what could be slowing it down so much.I tried to access my company site to process some work stuff and it took forever and a day to load what would normally be a couple of seconds. My computer is only about 8 months old, Intel Core Duo CPU, Memory 2047MB, 32 Bit O.S, with a Windows experience Index rating of 5.5.

Running Slow, Making Odd Noise.

Mar 23, 2008

I'm working with a Windows Vista HP Pavillion PC. No hardware has been modified. I'm not sure which version I have, I think I have all but the most recent update. ~I'm not sure if this is a hardware problem or not, but here goes. Anyway, about 4 months ago, my computer started acting odd. It would make an odd ticking, or clicking noise and start running slow. It sounds like an odd tick-tock noise. It seems to originate in the front of the computer, lower left side. Theres about a .5 second delay between the tick and tock noise. It keeps making that noise about every 3 seconds. It will seemingly stop and start doing this at random.

The slow downs are always associated with the tick-tock noise. I found out that when it's doing that, the computer starts functioning worse in general. Instead of running at normal CPU capacity, it limits itself to about 15% of it's power. Nothing huge is running in the background to suck up it's power. It just goes into "dumb mode". When this happened 4 months ago, I did a full system restore and that fixed it. Now it's happening again. I've already done a system restore. However, it doesn't want to boot up now. It's stuck on a please wait screen. So, has anyone suffered through this problem

Vista Software Pretty Slow Running

Mar 23, 2008

Vista is good looking software, but pretty slow. Altough my computer has no problems running it, because there's WAY enough power to do that. BUT, some serious issues have come up. And the most worst and annoying thing is the lag in games, internet etc. There's this lagspike that comes every 10 to 60 seconds. When youre playing a game that needs connection to internet example Guild Wars, it's annoying. There's no way you can play the game properly. First this lag wasn't so bad, but it has come to a point where the whole game disconnects from the server because lag is too long. This problem is experienced by many people and they are as annoyid as I am. More specificly the problem is experienced with wlan connections. I hope Microsoft quickly fixes this major problem.

Slow Boot Time Computer Running Ultimate X64

Mar 28, 2009

I've recently put together a new computer using these parts: I've updated to Vista Ultimate SP1, run multiple disk clean ups, defrags, use CCleaner, clean the registry, defrag the registry, disabled services and have made tweaks according to the guide provided on this website and have minimal startup programs running but my boot times average around 2 minutes. For a new computer with new hardware, this seems unreasonable as many users report boot times between 30-60 seconds. What could be wrong with my computer? On the vista loading screen with the green bar, it goes through about 22 cycles.

Vista 64 Home Premium Running Slow, Volmgrx.sys Corrupt

Mar 10, 2009

Vista 64 home premium is suddenly very slow, too slow to the point of programs not even launching. When trying to start in safe mode with networking, got a "repair" notice and then it tried to do a repair, saying that the volmgrx.sys was corrupt. However, the repair reported that it failed. I tried a system restore, and after seeing the "system restore is initializing" for over 12 minutes, I hit the power switch. It will start up in normal mode, but the disk activity light almost never goes out and is on almost solidly. I tried to copy the volmgrx.sys from a sister machine (two were ordered at the same time from HP), and then found that even in safe mode with command prompt, the file was protected. Is there a another way to copy over that file, or is that a "custom-made" file during the first turn-on of Vista?

Reinstall Basic Without DVD?

I need to reformat the hard-drive of my laptop (annual clean) but I cannot find my Vista Basic DVD, I cannot even remember getting any DVDs with the laptop when I bought it brand new from Currys (major UK electronics shop) before christmas.

Is there any other way I can reinstall Vista Basic (I don't want to restore Vista to a previous date) without the DVD? I've been into Start/Computer/Properties to get my Windows Activation Product ID, just in case anything thinks I'm trying to install an un-purchased copy. Also, what would I need to do for drivers of things like the graphics, sound, wireless network card etc?

Shut Window, "WINDOW Is Not Properly Shut Down"

Apr 3, 2008

About 40% of the time when I either choose HIBERNATE or the standard SHUT DOWN, the computer just keeps on running. Although it seems WINDOW has shut down, the "ON" light is still on and I can hear the fan running. When this happens I am left with no other option but to use the "emergency shut down" method - pressing the ON button for more than 4 seconds (ASUS laptop, using Vista Home Premium). Presumably this method would damage the computer in some ways in the long run?

I assume WINDOW is shut down because the next time when I turn on the computer it doesn't say the "WINDOW is not properly shut down". So can any kind souls please help me with this annoying problem of turning off the computer completely?

32-bit And 64-bit Distinctions With Home Basic

May 24, 2008

I am confused. I recently purchased a brand new Toshiba Satellite laptop (from a very well known retail vendor). I have Windows Vista Basic running on it. For reasons I won't go into right now (but perhaps in a later post after this), you might say I was forced into doing a little research on my laptop in order to determine whether it is a 32 or 64 bit operating system. Well I found out that my version of Windows Vista Home Basic is 32-bit. However, I am also aware that it is available in a 64-bit version. I also found out that there is such as thing as Windows Vista Starter Edition, which supposedly is the ONLY version of Vista which is NOT 64 bit. If this is true, then why does my System Information tell me that I am running a 32 bit version of Vista Home Basic edition? I do not understand this.

Let me clarify something very quickly here. I am a Computer Networking major at the present time. I do not need someone to speak to me in terms which only someone who doesn't know who to turn on a computer would understand. Lastly, let me also clarify one last thing (hopefully). If there is such as thing as a 64 bit version of Vista Home Basic, then why does my laptop only have the 32 bit version? Is this because I have the "starter" edition, and in order for me to get the better one I would need to actually PAY to upgrade? But why in the world would I need to actually have to PAY in oder to get nothing more than yet a DIFFERENT edition of the exact same OS that I am already running on this laptop of mine? To me, either Windows or Toshiba would have made this a whole lot easier to understand if they would simply have made a DISTINCTION between Vista Starter edition and Vista Home Basic.

Can I Run Basic +Win2000+Ubuntu?

Apr 5, 2009

Is it possible? If so, how do I do it? I probably need detailed instructions, although I am an experienced computer (my career) and Windows person. (3.1 on up).I have a new Dell Vostro 220 with Home preinstalled. No Vista DVD; just the recovery DVD and partition.I am presently running Vista Home Basic, with Ubuntu 8.10 running as a program under Vista.I no longer run Win 2000 because I wanted to try just Vista. However, Vista won't install and/or run all my old programs (even after adjusting for oldness) and I miss many of them, such as PSP6 and others. Therefore I want to run a triple boot system, so I can:

(a) Use Vista and later Windows 7 if it is better.
(b) Continue to play with Ubuntu. (I mainly use the games.)
(c) Use my old pgms (mostly gfx) with Win2000.

Can I do this? Or is there a better, still free, way? I live on Social Security, so I can't upgrade many/any old pgms. I am happy with my oldsters (I'm old too; I'll be 70 in less than 2 weeks) and I want to use them as they are if possible.

New Partition In Home Basic?

Feb 6, 2009

I am wondering if it is possible that I could create a new partition on my Vista home basic just for storage for pictures and document files mainly. If I could do this, would it help the speed of the computer? If so, how would I go about doing this? And, once stored in the new partition, would I be able to open them as normal? I already
use flash drives, etc for storage, but have run out of room on both of those, and just cant afford to buy more right now. I need to speed up this pc, and I know the vast number of pictures and documents and scans I have on here are probably the main culprit for slowing it down. (I do genealogy, and ebay- and have huge number of pictures relating to both, as well as text documents, .rtf files, .pdf files, .doc, etc).

If Home Basic Run Smoothly?
