Event Viewer Time: System Freeze
Jul 29, 2009
here's the event: After uneventful computing for several hours this AM - I began to play Vista Spider Solitaire for some relaxation & the entire game/cursor - everything froze as I was about to win. Typical! Please note the time discrepancy below from the event log - indicating the correct date/time (7/21) from the log as opposed to the 'description' that indicates the wrong time and date from the previous day (7/20).

I already followed closely that tutorial Brink made, to boot on safe mode disable
WinMGMT, etc and it didn't work. I need Event Viewer to work so that Diskeeper works.
The following error i receive when trying to start the service by Services.MSC
Windows could not start the the Windows Event Log service on local Computer. Error 4201: The instance name passed was not recognized as valid by a WMI Data Provider. (The service is set to Automatic, tho)

I've been struggling with this for a couple of days now without any success, I noticed the the event viewer would not start, it reported that "Event Service is unavailable. Verify that the service is running" Well, the service was not running and my attempts to start Windows Event log result in an "Error 5: Access is denied"
So to Google I go. I tried several things that I found there, taking ownership of files, resetting the whole system to default permissions by using a Microsoft
utility. That reset everything except one folder that it reported as an error. That was the EtRTeventLog folder, this seems to locked out completely. I renamed the folder using Unlocker and Windows recreated a new folder but I still have the same problem.

I have a sound trigger for the 'Open program' event in Vista Basic sp2 x32 When my computer is idle and I "here" a program open the only thing I have to go by is the time it occurred. If I want to go to Event Viewer in Administrative Tools and see what this event was that triggered the event sound I'm overwhelmed with a bunch of categories and sub-categories. In order to find what opened at the specific time I need to check each category and sub-category. That is a real pain in the ass. I find no search capabilities in Event Viewer unless I've missed it. Is there some way of making a hunt for a specific time easier in Event Viewer? Or, is there some 3rd party software with the capability to sort all events by data and time??

Sometimes, when I search for items in the start menu, it gets iffy about using exact names. For example, if I type 'Event' (for Event Viewer), I get nothing. But, when I remove the 't', the Event Viewer shortcut comes up. The same thing happens when I search for the Task Scheduler (using 'Task' and removing the 'k')

I was viewing the security logs in event viewer today (exciting I know!) when I noticed some audit failures. I like things running smoothly so this irked me a little. I have a number relating to tcp/ip: Code integrity determined that the image hash of a file is not valid. The file could be corrupt due to unauthorized modification or the invalid hash could indicate a potential disk device error.

So I'm still chasing down why explorer keeps crashing, it's quite annoying. But I guess in doing so I messed with some setting (or maybe I didn't and this happened) and now my event viewer wont run, I even tried running it through cmd with the following commands: eventvwr.msc /s and just eventvwr.msc
I just tried to run event viewer to chase down my explorer crash, then that wont even run, I have no idea what the heck is going on... There's no "cause" except explorer usually crashes when I right click, or when I'm in my desktop folder. Those are the two main things. As far as the eventviewer, I'm clueless. If need be, I can do system restore, but more than likely that's an extreme measure for such a small issue. Its more an annoyance than anything else, it doesnt really bother me lol. Could it be AVG's context menu?
All I know is that this is really getting annoying, but anyway, if you guys have any suggestions that would be great. Do I need to post any screenshots of anything??? I can post them if needed. BTW I'm running Vista x64 SP2 on a HP dv4 lappy, the only taskbar items running are AVG, my pointer, and sound...

My 'unexpected shutdowns' are random and occur -on average- once every session. They vary but usually go by two main scenarios: (1) Vista desktop and mouse cursor freezes - control/alt/delete and keyboard too - the only alternative is to push the PC restart button - or (2) the monitor goes black and Vista reboots on its own. What's usually happening when these scenarios occur? Well, I ought to keep a log ready to record these events. I'll soon have to try but as a student in a much earlier life - I took such bad lecture notes I could not read them after two class lectures. Here's what I can recall:1. I think most shutdowns have happened when either beginning to view a video or going to a new web page that pops up a streaming advertisement.
2. I recall one when I opened Windows Mail - but cannot say if I had clicked on anything yet or if mail was downloading at the time. So - it may not be Windows Mail but just the action of opening a new window? My Internet research indicates these 'unexpected shutdowns' have been frustrating Vista & earlier MS OS users for years. Rather surprisingly, I found no promising suggestions for troubleshooting or remedies - to date. For years the OS of my choice was W2K. If only Vista had W2K's reliability. I rarely - if ever- experienced such ongoing, unexpained W2K events.Perhaps I've missed some new info that addresses this issue - so that's the primary reason for this posting. Anything? I should add that upon rebooting after an unexpected shutdown - Vista asks if Safe Mode is desired during rebooting. I never benefited by going to Safe Mode - except that on the many occasions that I bypassed Safe Mode & choose normal rebooting - I would experience a variety of other issues soon afterwards. So - Safe Mode is probably the best way to go if one's patience permits - even if it avails few if any hints as to the specific shutdown

Recently I have bought Vista Home Premium x64 and to be honest I am having quite annoying issue with this OS . I had installed Vista on RAID0 partition. Additionally I have three other sata drives for my data . I noticed that from time to time when I am working on vista , system freeze for 2-3 sec then everything is fine and I can continue work. Particulary when for example I am opening some application or even windows explorer , my computer etc. (when it hangs I can't move my mouse). Moreover when it freeze I "hear" something inside my computer case as if my computer weak up from hibernation.

from the first day I have seen plenty of errors in Event Viewer Acer Support even sent me System and Recovery Disc,s. I did a Recovery to Factory Default and there are 24 errors Errors in Event Viewer right after the Recovery was done, BEFORE I connect to the Internet for Updates. The only options this disc,s give me is Recovery to Factory default or recovery from back up, I don't have besides what good is it to make a backup when the first install is full of errors and I don't get to chose which applications or program s to install. In my older Computer, Vista home basic I get to Install Windows with no errors and get to chose which application to Install.

I am getting tired of having to restart IE7. What is going on with this freezing problem. It started about three or four weeks ago, and hasn't stopped. Seems everytime I access the internet the system freezes up (at least two or three times, each time). I am now running it without any add-ons, and still have the same problem.

My digital camera is a Kodak Easyshare and it takes video in .mov format and i have been using windows movie maker, it allows me to import that format fine. Been working on some video projects and I should have finished the project, before i reformatted my system, but thats in the past and this is now. (I learned my lesson)
after i reformatted and put vista back on, i tried importing and playing the video files in windows movie maker and the video will play ok, but i have no sound. I drag it to the timeline and expand the video to show the audio and the audio doesn't show up. I can play other sound files ok, it just wont play sound from .mov formats. I tried playing the video in quicktime and it plays fine with sound too. I tried another video editing software and it plays fine too. I am working on getting another video editing software, but for now, i will just use what i got, but i got nothing now. If someone could help that would be great.
I tried Windows Live movie maker, which btw, is really ugly, it doesnt even have a timeline, how can you edit videos without a timeline? anyways...i tried the video and it plays, but still no sound. I am thinking that there was a codec that was installed before, but i am not sure what that is. Is there a way to find out what codecs you should have or does it depend on what the user has installed and customized system?....

I have no idea which category in the forums this post should go! So I've been having these random hibernation problems for a while now, but last week, it got REALLY bad. I'm on an HP Pavilion dv2500 and I left it on to download something and then accidentally fell asleep myself. When woke up the next morning found out the thing had hibernated on me again.Well, nothing unusual there as I have this problem frequently, except this time, it couldn't resume windows - kept on getting stuck at this black screen during boot with this flashing horizontal cursor in the corner of the screen. After another attempt at resuming (after manually shutting it down and opening it again) I told it to cancel resume and just start windows normally.
And that's when I noticed a myriad of symptoms! It took an AGE for me to log in, and when I finally did, I got a couple of messages, one from Norton saying it couldn't scan my email anymore and another general little windows speech bubble that said:'Failed to connect to a windows service - windows could not connect to the System Event Notification Service service. The problem prevents limited users from logging on to the system. As an administrative user, you and review the System Event Log for details about why the service didn't respond.'....

I recently went into Change Date & Time Internet time tab and chose a time standard to connect with. After doing that I went onto the internet and connected with time.nist.gov and checked the time. After that I was no longer able to go into the internet time tab. It tells me that time.nist.gov is the time connection and I can't change it. It tells me I need to have permission to do this as administrator. I am the administrator! What goes here?

Solution (for whomever may have stumbled upon this page through Google): My computer was freezing on a random basis because I used Acronis Disk Director Suite to partition my hard drive (issues with Vista compatibility?). Anyway, I had to write 0's to my hard drive (using KillDisc, i.e. deleting my entire hard drive and reinstalling everything) and no more issues.
If "send to HP" in the title doesn't give it away: My HP Pavilion is under warranty, but the thing is - I've sent it back to HP for repairs twice already (for the same screen-related problem). I hate their customer service for giving me a bad product and not fixing it the first time . I'd do anything to not sent it in again for another few weeks... Hopefully I can do something myself (I'm competent enough to do / learn to do very advanced procedures)....

Advanced System Care Free 3.3.4 and Orbit Downloader 2.8.13 which are both the latest versions respectively.
I noticed this issue ever since I moved to Vista. Back in XP the two would simply run on startup with no flukes. This time, however, there are a few lapses. Let me explain.
1. Advanced System Care Free starts up most of the time but there are times that it just dosen't and the the tray icon is completely missing even when I start the application manually.
2. Orbit Downloader, no matter how many times I select the option for it to startup it simply refuses to do so.

If I leave my computer sit overnight, it will completely freeze, and I have to hard-shut it down. The only program that was running was Firefox (with a few pages open). What would cause this?
Overheating?
Memory issues?
GPU issues?
I have had freezing before while browsing on the internet, but it has happened only once, and I had tons of Firefox windows open. It will, however, freeze almost every time I play Company of Heroes Gold, and sometimes freezes when I play FarCry2. In addition, I can benchmark it over and over, but if I let it sit for an hour AFTER I benchmark it, the system will freeze. I have all updates...64 bit drivers, BIOS, etc... These issues aside, why would it freeze when sitting idle overnight? My system specs are pretty good...if I was overheating I would be shocked

My problem has been going on for a while but has recently gone over the edge and caused me some big problems. I play Second Life and from time to time, it would freeze up my computer but yesterday, the screen of the laptop just went black and I had to hard reboot my computer, only for it to come up with the Vaio screen looking horrible graphically. Then it would commence to the normal boot up and then to a black screen and it stayed there all night. I've tried removing everything with Second Life off of my computer and it still won't boot up completely.
I tried leaving it on overnight to see if would bypass the black screen but it wouldn't. How should I go about fixing this? I can try getting my hands on the Vista DVD and or the recovery disks from my girlfriend. I would honestly just like to know what caused the problem and how to fix it because you can easily learn from your mistakes by fixing it. Oh, another interesting tidbit is that my brother used the computer beforehand to do some research then left it on and when he came back, the screen was black and when he rebooted it, the screen was messed up and he did a system restore to bring it back to normal but if I tried that now, it would still only boot up in safe mode and not regularly.

When I start it, it will go to the desktop, everything will run fine, then suddenly nothing can be clicked, and soon the cursor also freezes. No chance to Ctrl+Alt+Dlt or bring up task manager. This freeze was initially happening after about 30 seconds, but after taking out one stick of RAM it lasts as long as 5 minutes before freezing (may be coincidence). This started happening before I changed any settings, the PC is still as new.
I have tried taking out the RAM and putting back in, leaving one stick out as mentioned above, and having a look at the BIOS on startup (didn't really know what to look for though). Made sure everything is plugged into PSU, everything looks right, I'm truly at a loss as to why this is happening. Oh, and freeze doesn't happen in Safe Mode, which leads me to believe it's nothing to do with hardware and is related to Vista or drivers?

I have a fairly new computer (about 5 months), and I recently wanted to play Oblivion again. When I ran the setup for it, the music would start from the setup program, and I would click yes (for permission to run the setup program) then I would get an error saying that the program has to close. I browsed the internet for solutions, and found that Oblivion was made for XP and hasnt made a patch/compability for Vista. I also read that Oblivion can be played on a vista and that many people are doing it. I found out I had to run the setup program (and the oblivion program) in windows xp service pack 2. I installed the game with no problem after that.
Now when I run the game, it goes to the menu screen (with the option for new game, load, option, ect.), and the first couple times I would go to options to configure the graphics and sound ect... after about 10-30 seconds the computer would freeze with the screen frozen, or the computer would freeze and the screen go black. After a couple tries (after restarting the computer) I would click on "New Game". The intro movie would play for about 10 secound before my computer froze again .

About two years ago I bought a Vista HP laptop. Recently when I went on vacation with my children the snow storm holed us up in the hotel with nothing to do. So they used my laptop alot. After this, my laptop did not work properly. About 1 minute after I turn it on it will freeze completely. After about ten minutes it will unfreeze but proceed to execute all of the clicks I made during the time it was frozen. I am at about an intermediate stage when it comes to computers. I have already posted the above in the General Discussions forum and they told me to come to you guys. My old firewall did not seem to be doing the job to I downloaded a trial of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and started the scan it has been scanning for about 5 hrs. and has come up with 1 infected object. I am pretty sure that is the root of my problem but my computer won't unfreeze long enough for me to take care of it.

I've been running Ultimate x64 and had occasional freezing problems. I'm pretty sure those are related to a memory issue. Normally I just have to hard reset the system and everything is fine. But yesterday I had a lock-up, hard reset and somehow the date was changed to 18 Apr, 2066. I obviously couldn't connect to the internet, so I reset the date to 2009 and restarted. No change.
My software subscriptions think they have expired, and I'm at a complete loss here. I require the internet and that software on that system for work and have no idea what to do. I believe as soon as I get the connection up, my subscriptions will talk to their online server friends and all will be fine (hopefully), so that's why this thread is here.

In my network, sometimes my user's laptops freeze during the logon script. Well the computers don't actually freeze, they just don't move beyond the logon script. When I go into task mamager, cpu is running at 100% (2 gb ram and very new processors) and the process taking up the most memory (48,748k)is svchost.exe I think it's associated with the windows search indexing but I'm not completely sure. On the Microsoft support site I saw that I could use the command tasklist /svc to see what is running in svchost. But I haven't figured out yet how to determine exactly what this svchost process is assoicated with so I can prevent it from running all the time.
