View 8 RepliesStarting in Windows Vista and Server 2008, Microsoft includes native support for IPv6 (Internet Protocol Version 6) and is enabled by default. IPv6 is the new computer address protocol that will eventually replace IPv4 which is currently the most popular standard. Unless you network has a specific requirement for IPv6, very few do, you can safely disable IPv6. Unlike other protocols, you cannot disable IPv6 by disabling the protocol on each of your network interfaces. While that will disable the protocol for the interfaces the loopback and tunnel interfaces will still have it enabled that can cause problems with applications. The proper way to disable IPv6 is to disable via the registry....
View 0 Replies View RelatedIt looks like since i updated Vista with SP1, i'm experiencing paquet loss. The motherboard is a Tyan 5400xt. (bios Updated to 1.01 - Latest stable) My cable modem box (ISP one) is on 192.168.1.1. When i ping -t 192.168.1.1 i have about 30% paquet loss !I changed the cable, the port on which the cable is plugged. Disabled IPv6 etc ..
It still happens.
When i do the same test with another computer @home (running vista 32, 3Com chip Lan) No probelm ! Prior installing this 5400xt, i was running a K8we, vista Ultimate x64 SP1 same cable, same switch port : No problems at all. So i suspect some bug / incompatibily with this Lan chipset and Vista. I'm running MS drivers because i cannot install the latest Intel Lan drivers. When I want to install them, it stops with a "software not compatible with this version of windows".
Here are my plans:
Boot a linux live Ubuntu : ping -t and see if it'shardware related or soft. Then (i suspect soft) Reinstall Vista from Scratch. Update just before SP1. Install Latest Intel drivers ( i was able to install them prior applying SP1, but after SP1 it starts to behave strangely and when i wanted to uninstall these drivers to test with MS drivers i was not able to uninstall - software incompatible with this version of windows).
I have Vista Ultimate x64 machines in a domain environment. I use UltraVNC to remote desktop. It requires UAC enabled to send the ctrl+alt+del sequence at the login screen where you type in user name and password. Are there anyways that i can disable the UAC but allowing the sequence to go thru? or enable only the sequence while disable everything else in UAC so I dont get annoying popups?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI am the only user on my laptop. I accepted the Toshiba settings when I bought the machine, but I realise that there are a number of features that are disabled that (as an administrator) I should be able to use. for example:
1. Windows Defender will show me the details of start-up programs but not allow me to remove/enable/disable anything (the buttons are greyed-out/disabled).
2. There are some folders (e.g. in my internet favourites) which are read-only and when I switch read-only off, it ignores what I've done - they remain read-only.
My OS is Windows Vista Business and I am attempting to disable the auto startup of a program. I located the program in Windows Defender, Category: Startup Programs but all options to "Remove, Disable and Enable" are grayed out. I also noticed the majority though not all auto startup programs in the Startup Category are grayed out. Why is this? What other course of action may I take to disable the unneeded auto startup of unnecessary programs? Also, my inquiry pertains specifically to an HP Digital Camera software.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm running Windows Vista Ultimate with IPv6 and Teredo installed and enabled, but it seems I am unable to ping any hosts on the local network (which consists of one other XP SP3 machine) or internet. Both computers are connected to a standard router (Dell TrueMobile 2300, which is
IPv4 only I believe). Still, an IPv4 router should not matter considering Teredo should be enabled on both computers. Running ipconfig returns the following:...........
When I logged on this evening an event balloon popped up telling me some service had failed to start and that Limited Users would not be able to log on. It vanished before I could make a note of it so I tried looking for it in the Event Viewer. I haven't found that message but I've noticed some things that concern me slightly:
At 3AM this morning my computer awoke from Sleep mode for two hours. I hadn't even known this was possible without my intervention unless I had Wake on LAN enabled (or Wake on Ring/USB/ etc. The only wake event I'm aware of having configured is Wake on Keyboard). During this time, Windows Update ran and the system time was updated so maybe this is normal..................
I bought a Vista back in 2007 and the internet has been working great until recently. I got a rogue on my laptop and ever since I only get local access. I've been googling this thing for around 3 ~ 4 days now and I've tried just about everything I've come across and nothing seems to be working. It says I'm connected to the router with excellent signal strength but then it says the router isn't connected to the internet and I'm sure that's not the issue because the computer I'm typing this on is connected to the router fine and it's a Vista as well so I'm sure it's not a router-Vista compatibility issue.
I've tried ..
- disabling IPv6
- updating drivers (there were no updates)
- multiple scans
- disabling firewall
- uninstalling norton (with the removal tool download)
- deleting my router profile and trying to connect again
- connect via ethernet cord (doesn't work)
When I do IPCONFIG /ALL, I get .. I've tried manually putting in the IP stuff, but I didn't know the gateway and DNS details so I couldn't really do it.
** I DONT have the reformat disks. When I bought the laptop they didn't provide me with one and when we asked for one they said they'd send us one but never did. Now they're closed (nationally) and I'm not sure as to where I could get one...................
I have trouble playing all of my 3 AOEIII games as DEP is stopping it and/or protection stub (it happens with both). I found the John Barrett page on after doing a Google, and it explained how to disable the DEP for such problems, which I did. It also gave the re-enable process as well. I have tried to re-enable the DEP about 5 or 6 times now, following word for word what John Barrett has suggested for re-enabling DEP but to no avail.
It just will not enable? It's all greyed out and nothing works. Before I had to reformat last night, what I did was 'turn on DEP for all programs except those I select' and this worked once I had pointed DEP in the direction of the games and the other program that would not work. However, I cannot do anythig at all with the DEP now and I just don't know what the hell to do? Can anyone offer some kindly advice please, to a relative newb who knows nothing about this type of thing?
I no longer have Aero theme enabled, and, I can't select it from the list. This has started after I had to format my drive and install Vista all over. Everything else with it seems just fine. Only this "Windows Vista Transparency" is not working. There is only one place I can think of to enable it at, and it is not there. Do I need to install some updates?
There should be another option there "Windows Vista Ultimate" I think, but I could be wrong.
But how do I enable transparency and all of the other effects of Aero?
Vista ultimate sp1. I upgraded the P4 processor. Enabled hyperthreading in the bios. PCwizard says the system can do hyperthreading, but it's disabled. Benchmarks indicate this is true. If I reload vista from scratch, hyperthreading is enabled and works. Benchmarks much better. I really don't want to have to reinstall from scratch. Is there a way to enable hyperthreading without a reinstall?

I have a Toshiba Satellite A100-033 running Vista Home Basic. I mostly use the laptop as a desk top replacement and, as I dislike using the touchpad, I disabled it, and instead I use an external mouse via one of the USB ports. On my laptop the standard way to disable the touchpad is by simultaneously pressing the Fn key and the F9 key. However, to be honest, I am not sure whether I did in fact disable the touchpad by this means, or whether I used some other means (if it was by some other means then I have forgotten what this was). Recently I wished to re-enable the touchpad so that I could use the laptop outside the house without having to take my external mouse with me as well. However, I found that pressing Fn + F9 did not re-enable the touchpad and I now can't use the touchpad at all.
If I go into mouse properties (in control panel), this tells me that my synaptics pointing device is enabled. If I go into device manager and look at "mice", I am told that my touchpad is working properly. All this makes me suspect that the problem is not a hardware fault but that I have altered some setting, with the result that my touchpad is permanently disabled until I change the setting back to its original state.
