Cannot Manage Accounts
Mar 23, 2008I added a new user profile for my son last week. Yesterday, when I tried going back and making his ID an administrator, I could no longer see the ID in the manage accounts box. I can only see the ID in parental controls. Also, I cannot create a new ID and when I try to enable User Account Control (UAC), it doesn't remain on. I tried to do a system restore to a point created last week but that didn't work. Has anyone encountered this issue? Could this be a Vista bug? I have Vista Home Premium.

Nov 12, 2007OK, I've been on this quest for two days now, searching all over the internet. I wonder if ANY body has the answer.
The other day my new computer (Dell Inspiron) came with a 320 gig HDD. Yes, it has the annoying EISA configured partition of 55 MB (EDIT 11/15 just caught mistake, edited from GB to MB) but that's not the big issue.
Another partition is Drive C and allocated with 288 GB and has the OS on it. Only 22.9 GB being used.
The last partition with 10 GB is drive D (recovery).
I want to take a BIG piece out of the C partition and create new partitions.
Using EITHER the Disk Managment tool OR diskpart.exe I am ONLY allowed to shrink C by 128 GB. So after using either, C is 159 GB and the new partition is 128 GB. And many reports around the internet say gparted don't work neither.
I want C to be around 30 GB - 50 GB
Sure I could BUY Partition Magic 8.0 for $70, but this is ONE TIME reallocation. That's a little pricey for a one time shot and I do not support Symantec.
Don't Manage To Stay Operational
Mar 23, 2008I am totally new to second life and I installed it on my new laptop 15,4 screen (Asus Z53S) dual core T7700, 2GB memory, graffic card Nvidia G Force 8600M GS Vista Home OS, but I don't manage to stay operational (?) more than a few seconds. I have cabble connection (usually 13500 kps download and 480 upload rate). What happens is when I start the game I manage to move (walk7fly) for a few seconds and I imediatly loose all control over my avatar (keeps walking/flying etc).

Installer Has Stopped Working, Can't Get The Manage Attachments Feature To Work
Oct 13, 2009I have been trying to dowload programmes from the BBC iplayer site but first it tries to install Adobe AIR. This fails, giving a meaningless Windows message stating that the installer has stopped working. I can't get the Manage Attachments feature to work so I can't upload images of the error messages. I have an administrator account.
Following instruction, I downloaded AIR directly from the Adobe site and found that it still wouldn't install on my account. It asks me twice if I want to run the installation exe file but from two different locations which is weird. NVidia 8600 GT: None Show On Device Manage And Stuck In 800x600 Mode
Nov 17, 2009I have an ASUS M2N-Sli Deluxe mother board with a AMD Athalon 62 x2 (Dual Core) 2800Mhz 5600+ Cpu, With Nvidia nForce 570 SLI MCP Chipset and 2x nVidia 8600 GT 256RAM. I have been using this set up for over 2 years.
Just last week the fans on my Graphics cards over heated and kinda melted for no reason, I wasnt watching a movie nor was i playing a game. Due the fan on the GPU melting i orders some new ones ie NorthQ (NQ-3860A). The fans work fine and are keepint the GPU cool enough, But i cant detect and of the cards on device manager and i cant change the resolution nor can i load nVidia control panal so i can change the resolution from there and set up the SLI cponnection.
I have also found that with the second GPU When put in the PCI slot comes up with Green lines and a very very unclear picture. Can any one please help me as i have the computer connected to a 32 inch lcd tv and it hurts my eyes, besides that i cant watch any movies

May 2, 2008I inserted a new, blank 1GB USB drive into laptop. Vista Home Basic promptly asked if I wanted it to be used for ReadyBoost. I responded "Yes". Subsequently when booted-up, Right-Click Computer Advanced System Settings - Advanced tab - Performance (.... virtual memory) - Settings button - Advanced tab - Virtual Memory Change ... button.
It shows "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives" is ticked: "Paging file for each drive:" C: System managed F: (the USB stick drive): None
If I untick the "Automatically manage .." and select the USB stick drive, it shows only 103MB available; this figures, because the USB stick drive "F:", shows a "ReadyBoost.sfcache" file of 870,401kB, created at the time of the latest boot-up; thus it seems to be creating or refreshing the paging file on boot-up.........
Cannot Re-enable DEP
Mar 23, 2008I have trouble playing all of my 3 AOEIII games as DEP is stopping it and/or protection stub (it happens with both). I found the John Barrett page on after doing a Google, and it explained how to disable the DEP for such problems, which I did. It also gave the re-enable process as well. I have tried to re-enable the DEP about 5 or 6 times now, following word for word what John Barrett has suggested for re-enabling DEP but to no avail.
It just will not enable? It's all greyed out and nothing works. Before I had to reformat last night, what I did was 'turn on DEP for all programs except those I select' and this worked once I had pointed DEP in the direction of the games and the other program that would not work. However, I cannot do anythig at all with the DEP now and I just don't know what the hell to do? Can anyone offer some kindly advice please, to a relative newb who knows nothing about this type of thing?
Windows Defender Or Manage Windows Start Up Programs Window Comes Up Saying "contact Administrator" Administrator
May 20, 2010We're on a network and all the pcs only have one user and therefore I am administrator of all. One pc now won't let me access stuff. When I try and go into Windows defender or Manage windows start up programs, a window comes up saying "contact Administrator". ?? Can't access folder options either. There's a virus on it (darn kids) which I'm trying to get rid of (despite having McAfee, Windows defender, Ad-Aware and Stinger). Could it be the virus causing this? which is hard of course to get rid of if I can't have any access to security files.

There should be another option there "Windows Vista Ultimate" I think, but I could be wrong.

How Enable Hyperthreading?
Feb 22, 2009Vista ultimate sp1. I upgraded the P4 processor. Enabled hyperthreading in the bios. PCwizard says the system can do hyperthreading, but it's disabled. Benchmarks indicate this is true. If I reload vista from scratch, hyperthreading is enabled and works. Benchmarks much better. I really don't want to have to reinstall from scratch. Is there a way to enable hyperthreading without a reinstall?

Pressing Fn + F9 Did Not Re-enable The Touchpad
May 4, 2008I have a Toshiba Satellite A100-033 running Vista Home Basic. I mostly use the laptop as a desk top replacement and, as I dislike using the touchpad, I disabled it, and instead I use an external mouse via one of the USB ports. On my laptop the standard way to disable the touchpad is by simultaneously pressing the Fn key and the F9 key. However, to be honest, I am not sure whether I did in fact disable the touchpad by this means, or whether I used some other means (if it was by some other means then I have forgotten what this was). Recently I wished to re-enable the touchpad so that I could use the laptop outside the house without having to take my external mouse with me as well. However, I found that pressing Fn + F9 did not re-enable the touchpad and I now can't use the touchpad at all.
If I go into mouse properties (in control panel), this tells me that my synaptics pointing device is enabled. If I go into device manager and look at "mice", I am told that my touchpad is working properly. All this makes me suspect that the problem is not a hardware fault but that I have altered some setting, with the result that my touchpad is permanently disabled until I change the setting back to its original state.

Wireless Adapter Not Enable
Apr 9, 2009I went to a wired connection instead of wireless, and then decided to go back to wired. Since my wireless connection is through a linksys WUSB600N and it has known problems with skipping when playing games like World of Warcraft I turned off WLAN and had disabled my wireless adapter, then installed another program to run the connection (Which I had done previously though the last time I didn't turn off WLAN or disable my adapter). Then I went to enable the adapater and it wouldn't enable. I also turned back on WLAN and restarted. It still won't work. At this point nothing I do will enable my wireless adapater. It shows it is enabling but then it just keeps saying disabled. The light on the WUSB600N doesn't even turn on when I plug it in now, and it just worked less then 24 hours ago.
