DVD Needed To Boot

Feb 27, 2009

I've just re-installed my os to Vista Business. I origionally had Ultimate, but I didnt need all the features for gaming and editing videos and after a while my computer got really slow and the registry cleaners just didn't do it. I just ran a clean install and now every time I boot up, I get the blue screen of death, unless I leave my origional Vista dvd in the drive. I've done a lot of research but haven't found anything on the topic. I have run all of the start-up repair features and i've gotten nothing back at all. This problem just gets really anoying considering I only have one drive and I have to keep putting the disk back in to start up again.

64 Bit: Drivers Needed

Mar 23, 2008

I have a new desktop that is compatible with Vista 64 bit. That would give me the use of the 8 GB of ram.
Two questions:

(1) Where can I get the drivers that would be needed for my computer to run the 64 bit version? I haven't started the machine yet, but would run it a while with the 32 bit version. I assume I would download the drivers, then install the 64 bit version.

(2) Is it correct that any programs or hardware compatible with the 32 bit version will run with the 64 bit version, even though there will not necessarily be any improvement in performance?

Too Slow, Needed Reinstall

Mar 23, 2009

My vista 32 install slowed down so much that I did a full install from scratch. Since the professionals say dead registry entries don't hurt ( see posts at Registry Cleaner ), what is it that might cause vista to get slower and slower?

I've heard it often said that windows seems to just slow down over time, and it seems to be true in my experience as well.

I'd like to know how to get my system running great without needing to reinstall..

Yes, I know this is a vista 64 forum, in fact I'm now using vista 64, not 32. But the general question should still apply: why do windows os'es (32 or 64) seem to bog down over time?

Windows Features - Turn On Or Off. Advice Needed.

May 11, 2009

This is my current setup in Control Panel>Programs and Features>Turn Windows features on or off.

To be frank, I haven't a clue what most of these features mean or do, and Help and Support has nothing to explain the function of the majority of them.

For example, if I rest my cursor over Microsoft Message Queue (MSMQ) Server, it tells me that it 'Manages and Catalogues removable media and operates automated media devices'.

Because I do use SDHC Memory Cards, USB Memory Sticks, Cameras, Card Readers and other sundry media hardware, should I then have this box ticked? If not, then just what does this feature relate to, or do?

Similarly, what the heck is the TFTP Client, and what does that do?

Advice about the other open boxes and their functions, would be appreciated, with the exception of Games, which is self-explanatory, and something I have no interest in anyway. Recommended settings with reasons for activation, will help me understand these features.

Needed - Security Essentials Instead Of Norton 2010

Oct 18, 2009

My NIS 2010 runs out in 15 days, and instead of paying them $60 for another year I'm wondering if it's safe enough to just use MSE and the built in firewall.I never had any complaints with norton, it worked great, never noticed it at all, but I just can't justify spending $60 for something is MSE is at least or even almost as good.I haven't seen many independent tests of MSE,while I know that Norton is one of the best at detection and removal.

"hang-up" And Needed To Force Down And Then Restart

Feb 15, 2008

having 2 gb of 1333 mhz DDR3....apparantly not enough if disabling the pagefile. So i bought 2 more sticks some 5 weeks ago, installed it and every 5-10 min i had a "hang-up" and needed to force down and then restart. Needed to remove the memory and then i saw it. It clearly says on the sticks 'OCZ3G13332GK' (the first G is for Gold), should have been 'OCZ3P13332GK' (the P stands for Platinum). The only difference here is the latency speed. So i returned the memory and yesterday i got the right one. Surprise .... surprise, 'hang-ups' are back. So the question : does anyone know if there is a problem with the memory when handling 4 sticks or could it be the Asus board? (P5K64 WS MB S775 Fsb1333 Q P35 4DDRIII13 4xPe16). I opened the case the first time i had problems put a fan before it, this did not make a difference. Didn't try this now.

Booting Up: Reboot And Select Proper Boot Device Or Insert Boot Media In Selected Boot Device And Press A Key

Jan 1, 2009

I went to turn it on this morning, I just had a black screen showing the following words;

Press F2 to run
Press F11 to boot menu
Auto detecting PRI Master Atapai CDROM.

It then went to reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key. I went into the BIOS to change the boot order and inserted my Vista home premium 32bit. I then got windows is loading in files. After a short while I got the black start up screen with Microsoft Corporation but after a few seconds it just froze. Moments later it went to a blue screen with white writing part of which said the following; A PROBLEM HAS BEEN DETECTED AND WINDOWS HAS BEEN SHUT DOWN TO PREVENT DAMAGE TI YOUR COMPUTER.

Out Of Memory And Needed To Free Up Memory?

Aug 23, 2008

I am fairly new to the forums, and VERY new to Vista x64. The machine is new, and I was trying out some apps and games, I was in Secondlife when I got an error messege saying I was out of memory and needed to free up memory. I shut down the app and restarted it. Runs but I watched Task manager and saw my free memory down to almost nothing after an hour or so. The cached seems very high.

I did alittle research and decided to set a second page file on my 1TB hard drive, (OS is on the other HHD's )( regulated by system for size ) I'm not really sure whats going on. Example of just task manager and this page openis attached. Again, any help would be great in getting the memory set up on here optimal.

Boot Slow, Check Disk At Boot

Vista used to boot up very quickly. Now it spends ages on the page with the "loading" bar. Is it performing some sort of CHKDSK during this time? I only have sidebar and rocket dock starting up, and it's fast again when it gets to the desktop, it's just that loading bit takes quite an ages, and it didn't used to. Virus/spyware/malware free. How do i find out if it's doing some sort of chkdsk at boot?

Boot Failure - Dual Boot Situation

Mar 23, 2008

I have more or less completed all the driver upgrades and windows updates but I keep getting repeated boot failures of Vista. I can always get into Safe mode but in Normal mode the boot fails just after the first spash screen at the point when the screen goes blank to be replaced by the small circular Vista logo. After 2 or 3 attempts it succeeds to load but then the problem seems to reoccur, particularly when I have been back to XP for a while.

I had a similar problem with XP but that seems to have sorted itself out. I have tired looking in the logs for faults and failures but no clues there. I am running an ASUS P5E MB with Intel Quad 6600, 4Gig RAM, GeForce 8800GT and 2x250Gig HDs.

Fix Boot Logo, BOOT Screen No Works

Apr 16, 2008

This is the best install I have ever done (or was)…I did a fresh install and followed a tweak which was to very enlightening, to say the least. From there I have been to a few other sites and moved on to fully customizing my desktop/login and……well…this is where I stuffed up…My BOOT screen no longer works properly, even with the original “winload.exe.mui” file replaced.

I downloaded and used “Vista Boot Logo Generator” I loved the results on my last install…It worked well. Upon deciding to do a fresh install with Tweaking in mind, I simply coppied over a Boot logo I made previously after allowing permissions and all that as well as changing the NO GUI in msconfig…ect….BUT......

Change From Dual Boot To Single Boot ?

XP is on 1st primary partition [active] and is old. Vista is on 2nd Primary partition and is new. Dual boot info, I believe, is all on the XP partition. Soon I will want to go to Vista only. Do I just delete the XP partition (after imaging it, of course!) and set
Vista partition to active? (Paragon Partition Manager). Will it then automatically boot into Vista (which has no boot.ini)?

Boot Time And Boot Drive (not Listed)

Jul 1, 2008

I've had Vista x64 installed for about 2 full months now and I've recently begun having a lot of problems. One being: 187 seconds. What the hell? Before you ask, here are my specs. Lots of fast memory, a fast processor, 7200RPM boot drive (not listed), and ****ing awful performance. What gets me is that the delayed boot time is before I even see the "Welcome" screen.

My current boot time distribution:
1. BIOS does all its fancy stuff very quickly (about 6-7 seconds or so)
2. I get to my boot loader and it defaults to Vista after 5 seconds (dual-booting Vista/Ubuntu).
3. I then see the Vista loading screen (black screen with green loading bar) for about 4-5 seconds................
