Constant Reboot, Suspend/hibernate Or Power Saver Mode

Feb 11, 2009

I'm not sure exactly where to post, but I been getting constant reboot after bringing my system out of suspend/hibernate or power saver mode. It just reboots like its about to post, but then goes back down. It does this over 'n over until I cut the power and kill the PSU. I did have my system OC'ed, but at the moment I'm currently running at default settings.

Screen Saver Or Power Saver Doesn't Appear

Jun 2, 2009

The other day i was sitting next to my mate who was making notes on his MacBook. The cool thing i saw on that Mac was that, when not in use for a few seconds, the screen saver or the power saver doesn't appear, but first the brightness of the screen got to its minimum and then the screen went into power saver mode.

Is there a way to make my Vista do that as well? So instead of a screen saver, it would just turn the brightness to its lowest point and after a few minutes, it would go completely dark to save energy?

In Suspend Mode, Lid Closed, Pounding The Drive

Mar 19, 2008

I think this is what killed my last drive. I caught Vista doing this again which was a frustrating problem in the past.

Laptop. Vista set to hibernate when lid is closed.

So I get up this morning, lid is closed, drive light is just on FIRE, Vista is pounding the piss out of the drive.

It will NOT wake up, it will NOT do anything, it's just sitting there pounding the pee out of the drive while it's supposed to be suspended. I watched it for about 15minutes and nothing changed. I suspect it does this often and this merceless beating of the drive is what ruined my last one.

This is not the first time either, I'd gotten in the habit of shutting the machine completely OFF because of this problem, I've actually seen it pegging the processor too (or at least the fans are running full tilt and pumping a lot of heat...with the lid closed and the machine supposed to be in sleep or hibernate.

IE Stopped Working - Constant Reboot

Jul 1, 2009

who is not pc literate seems to have a trojan. It's difficult to tell as I don't live nearby so have been unable to look at his laptop. My sister-in-law visited at the weekend and tried to download some media software and half way through she told my dad it couldn't be done and left it. Since then he's been unable to access the internet - error message "IE has stopped working" and the laptop just continually reboots. He is running Vista Home.

Somebody else had a look and told him he has a trojan. He can't actually get the laptop to start up so that he can run an anti-virus (not even sure if he has one). I need something simple and easy that I can talk him through over the phone. He has contacted PC world but can't afford their health check at the moment.

Closing The Lid Does Not Enter Hibernate Or Sleep Mode

Mar 23, 2008

I've bought Dell XPS M 1530 recently. Earlier with bios version A_05 my notebook didnot detect wireless network if it became available while the computer was already On. The computer had to be waking up or restarting in the presence of network and then only it registered it. The Dell technician downloaded the latest bios (version A_07) and the wireless network problem got corrected. But the new problem thats comeup now is that closing the lid doesnt put the computer to sleep. I checked in the power options, thats correctly configured. Even changed it to hibernate when i close lid. That doesnt work either. One more thing i must add - that it's not like my computer doesnt get to know at all that the lid is closed. When i open the lid, everything is ON but the mouse arrow behaves 'drunk' for a while before becoming normal.

Hibernate Mode/option, Cannot Get Box Powers Options

Jun 29, 2008

I cannot get my Vista box powers options mode to go to hibernate. It's simply no longer listed as an option. It once was. Also no "Hybrid sleep mode" listed as well. Once was. Looking over the web I see people use the cmd line with:-

powercfg -h on

When I do this I get a message:- "You do not have permission to enable or disable the Hibernate feature." I am the only user and I have administer status. What gives?

Power Button Down To Switch Off And Then Reboot

May 9, 2009

I have a Gateway Tablet PC which originally came with Windows XP Tablet edition. I upgraded it to Vista Home Premium a long time ago (2 years?) and have had no problems, except for the lousy video chip that the laptop has. I decided to upgrade the ram from 1 GB to 2 GB, so went to a reputable online memory seller that has a scanner to tell you what memory to buy. Replaced the two 500MB modules with two 1GB modules. After that, the laptop goes into hybrid sleep/hibernation fine, but when resuming, the HDD light flashes, DVD spins up, etc., but the screen stays blank, and Vista hangs. I have to hold the power button down to switch off and then reboot, with the complaint that it did not shut down correctly.

This was so annoying that I reinstalled the 2 500MB memory modules and the problem went away. But a few weeks later, the slowness and disk thrashing prompted me to try again. So I put the 2GB in again, and bingo, the hang-upon-resume problem reappears. It does boot and run faster with the 2 GB, so I really want to keep it. Things I have tried: Switching off hibernation (both in control panel and with powercfg -h off) Removed ready boost sd card Installed Vista SP2 RTM

Panicking! Crashed, Cannot Reboot In Any Mode

May 6, 2009

I'm running Vista on a Sony Vaio purchased new in 9/08. I have neverhad any problems until this morning. My husband used my pc this morning to go to Tax Brain, and on his log on there was a Adobe Update ready to download. When I went to log him off, I decided to download the update;then the update stopped saying that there was a corrupt file on it. So I logged off his side and signed into mine (btw, he has NO adminitrativerights), I then tried to open my Windows Live Mail it then prompted me for a password, which it NEVER does because it's already saved. Then another alert came up that a file in live mail was corrupt; I freaked out and tried to access Norton (which is up to date) and it wouldn't letme. Next thing I know a blue screen comes up and says that windows is to be shut down to prevent damage; it suggested I restart the computer and try to open in safe mode and determine what files may be at fault.{Incidentally, yesterday Norton detected "Backdoor.Trojan" or something of that nature; I looked up the detail report and it said that it was blocked and fully removed from my system, and I was ablel to use the pc until 9pm with no problem - after booting up this morning is when thetrouble began.} Ok, so I tried rebooting in each and every mode available on that inital error screen. The rebooting goes down all the drivers until it gets to crcdisk.sys then it quits and gives me that damn blue screen again that advises me to try rebooting in safe mode. Icannot reboot at all. Now, I have downloaded an iso file of Vista recovery to my thumb drive using the tutorial on this site; and I have plugged it into the pc upon startup with same result as before. Nothing. I am not able to burn a DVD because the old laptop I'm on right now only has a CD-R and a DVD-Rom. I don't have any blank CD's here and my husband is at work; we're pressed for cash also so I'm pretty screwed all the way around. To make matters worse, I have an assignment and my finals (I'm finishingschool at 31) due today, tomorrow and this weekend.I don't have a vistarecovery cd, none was provided when i bought my pc.

Power Save Mode After Outage

Jun 5, 2008

I put this in another forum but I'm pretty sure it was the wrong one so here is my problem. Last night my power went out. Every time my power fails Vista will only start up in safe mode. If I try to start it normally it just goes right into "Power Save" mode. This has happened a handful of times, however it is usually an easy fix. I would just go into safe mode and run system restore and restore my system to a previous date. This however did not work last night. I can still boot up in safe mode. All of my files are still there.?

Monitor Wont Power Save Mode

Jul 29, 2009

I've had issues in the past where I come to my computer after the monitor goes into power save mode and it won't turn back on. Knowing that my machine is locked I can just press CTRL-ALT-DEL, type my password to unlock it, and once it's unlocked the screen turns on. I can also use VNC to remote to my desktop and unlock it. The monitor does *not* turn on until after unlocking and re-opening the desktop. This didn't happen all the time, but fairly often, particularly when coming in in the morning. In the past I'd thought it was maybe due to UltraMon software that I'd installed to have different backgrounds on each of my monitors, but that has since been uninstalled.

This is becoming more of an issue now that we're pushing out power profiles to all of our machines however. Screens turn off after 5-10 minutes, so frequently when I come back to my desk I'll have this issue. I have a workaround, but I just received a report of another user having the same problem (though he's using XP Professional). I figured I'd try to resolve my issue first (since I have direct access to my PC; he's a remote user), then see if my fix takes care of his problem as well. I am running Vista Ultimate SP1 on a Dell Optiplex 745. The video card (Radeon X1300PRO) has a dual-head DVI cable connected to it running two Dell 1703FPs monitors.

Power Scheme-Sleep Mode I use Vista on my Dell PC and have my power settings set to turn off my monitor in 15 minutes and my PC in 20 minutes (sleep mode). When my PC enters the Sleep mode, it only stays in that mode a short time, usually three or so minutes at the maximum, then it activates and my monitor turns on. Is this normal for this power option? I would expect my PC to stay in the Sleep
mode for a longer period of time, at least some of the time.

2). Disable Windows Indexing Service.
3). Modify the memory management for DisablePagingExecutive = 0

I feel that the interval of HDD LED lighting becomes to low. However, it is not turned off when I don't use any problem for a whle. I tried to use the resource monitor to trace the disk access. Can't Sign On Automatically Without Constant

Jan 10, 2009

I experience the "identifying 'network'" only when I sign on automatically, yet I do have an internet connection and networking works flawlessly; when I sign on manually there's only a very brief instance of it and after that all is normal. After literally spending days on this and trying all sorts of configurations for the router I still can't avoid this issue when I set networking properties to connect automatically.

Got a late model Dell PC/Vista Home Premium 32 which connects with no problems to my AT&T dry loop DSL Siemens 4100 modem which is connected to a new Linksys WRT54GS router which is picked up by an HP laptop/Vista Ultimate 32 with BROADCOM 802.11 b/g network adapter and NVIDIA nforce networking controller. As far as router configuration goes, I have tried the following applicable settings; Automatic Configuration-DHCP, Mixed Wireless Network Mode, Wireless Channel 6, SSID Broadcast as enabled and as disabled, Security Mode as WPA Personal and as WPA2 Personal, WPA Algorithms as AES, TKIP or AES+TKIP respectively. Also I have tried various connection scenarios in Wireless Network properties. Again the bottom line is that while I do have a network and internet connection, I can't sign on automatically without the constant "identifying 'network'" issue and when I sign on manually all is well. Never worked with a router before, Linksys customer support is an absolute trip with no destination and I'm hoping someone here might give me a few clues.

System Constant Freeze And Cursor Also

Jun 21, 2008

When I start it, it will go to the desktop, everything will run fine, then suddenly nothing can be clicked, and soon the cursor also freezes. No chance to Ctrl+Alt+Dlt or bring up task manager. This freeze was initially happening after about 30 seconds, but after taking out one stick of RAM it lasts as long as 5 minutes before freezing (may be coincidence). This started happening before I changed any settings, the PC is still as new.

I have tried taking out the RAM and putting back in, leaving one stick out as mentioned above, and having a look at the BIOS on startup (didn't really know what to look for though). Made sure everything is plugged into PSU, everything looks right, I'm truly at a loss as to why this is happening. Oh, and freeze doesn't happen in Safe Mode, which leads me to believe it's nothing to do with hardware and is related to Vista or drivers?

1. took side off case and removed any dust which was minimal
2. cleaned down heatsink
3. removed plug in Graphics card as i noticed it was very hot (GF8400GS)
4. reinstalled Vista ultimate from scratch
5. left the system running with the side off

alas it is still crashing in the first few minutes or wehn i try to install anything. The system is currently clean with just the install software given it crashes as soon as i try to do anything. It is 8 months old and in very good condition. I am at an absolute loss as to what could be.
