My mom is ill and I will be spending the next couple of weeks at her house. I want to buy a laptop computer that I could use at her house and access the information from my home computer, about three miles from moms house. Is there any way I can access my computer and the internet from her house which has no cable or anything?
View 4 RepliesI have a computer and laptop both running Vista. I want to be able to share files and printer between the computer and laptop. I have a wireless router connected to my computer which I class as the "main" computer and then I want to be able to use my laptop elsewhere in the house and be able to access all files on the main computer.
Both my laptop and computer are able to get to the internet but I can't get the computers to "speak" to each other so that I can file share. When I go to the Network Sharing Centre it only shows one computer and when I go to My Computer and then Networks it only shows one computer (on each) and therefore I can't access files remotely.
I have set up file sharing using the properties function on the files I want to share but when I'm on my laptop I can't "see" the computer on my Network and therefore cannot access the files and vice versa.
My laptop has been accessed by one of two people I once trusted... Now my entire system & Event Viewer logs show my User Account & my Admin have been redirected. A similar user name was created to replace mine along with the Registry to delete these changes.I have hundreds of records indicating the changes but no clue where to go from here!The DOS window closes when i try "netstat" or any other attempt to view system. I do have screen shots showing the remote servers, etc I would like to not only clean up this mess but also to reveal the coward! My ex-web designer or ex-bfriend.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am overseas for a while. So to be able to access my Vista computer at home, I installed Log Me In program, which works great for me in other environments. However, I've found out that I can't access my PC because the account on my Vista box does not have a password set (e.g. it's blank). Log Me In, it turns out, requires a password.
However, I am able to get to other computers (all running Windows XP) on my home network (i have 4 PCs in the house doing various things) via Remote Desktop and VNC. My question is whether it is possible to remotely (via Windows XP computers that are on my network) change the password for the account on my Vista computer?
I'm looking for info on the best way to remotely view another PC. I know how to setup a RDP connection, but I'm wondering if there is a more efficient "view only" solution. What I'd like to do is walk around a room with a tablet PC, and have what is on my screen copied to a separate desktop PC in the same room. The desktop PC would be projecting to a screen using an LCD projector. FWIW, this is the only way I can think of to use a wireless lcd tablet that also connects to an LCD projector. I have a wireless tablet (Wacom Graphire) that almost does this, but the tablet itself just has a grey surface to write on. I have to look up at the projector screen to see what I'm writing.

I have a laptop with Windows vista home premium, and a desktop with Windows XP Home. They connect through a wireless network. vista can access XP no problem. XP cannot access Vista with no problem: vista shows up in the
network places, when I turn the password requirement to share off in vista, I
can even access Vista from XP.
BUT: when I turn the password requirements to share on in vista, I cannot access my vista PC from my XP PC. HOWEVER: the original accounts on both computers have the EXACT SAME name, AND the exact same password, even the password hint is the SAME! STILL I cannot access my Vista PC from my XP PC.I have tried creating another account on both PCs with the exact same specifications, but even then as long as the password requirement to share is set as on in Vista, I cannot access the files on my Vista PC. Always, the error message that pops up is:.....
I have vista on desktop with router and am trying to network (wireless) with another desktop running xp. The network connections are good / router recognizes both computers. Internet connection functional on both computers. The vista computer will only "see" the xp intermitently. When it is available, I tried to map the xp drive from vista to no avail. Error message said the computer name was incorrect although it was correct. Both computers are in same workgroup.

After many failed attempts at transferring my old files i eventually ended up putting my old hard drive into my new computer, and attempted to drag and drop into a folder i created specifically for those files. Upon trying to do this, it transferred all of my program files, but when it gets to my actual documents, where i keep my most important files, it says i need administrative permission to do this.
Then, when i tried to access the files directly in my old hard drive, it said that i couldn't do that, and showed this: "You don't currently have permission to access this folder. Click continue to get access to this folder." "You have been denied permision to access this folder. To gain access to this folder you will need to use the security tab." and then when i use the security tab to transfer file permission to me, it still doesn't do anything.
I recently installed a Windows Vista 64-bit HP Pavilion CPU, and I checked for windows updates several times the day of installation. It took me two more days to find out the hard way that I needed two available updates, one for IE8 on Vista 64-bit and an SP-2 for 64-bit as well. I wonder why I had to work so hard to find out about these updates, why the ordinary Windows Update feature did not work as expected for me. For the future, where do I need to go to check for Vista 64-bit updates? Alas, another assumption bite the dust: The Windows Update page reliably tells you what you need to know about updating Windows.

View 7 Replies View RelatedAfter months of diddling in an effort to access shared files on my XP computer from my Vista computer I was finally able to access the files using Windows Explorer after the final reboot after installing SP1. My glee was short lived however because after turning my Vista computer off and then on again I still cannot access the shared files on my XP computer. I can see the XP computer in "Network and Sharing Center" > "View Full Map", but I can't view the shared files by double clicking on the XP computer icon.

Workgroup is WORKGROUP on both computers I am able to access a shared printer on the XP computer I am able to access the shared files on my XP computer by using Internet Explorer and entering \Computername in the address bar. I am able to access a NAS drive on my network using Windows Explorer.
We have 3 W2k computers and a new vista computer. The Vista computer cannot access the shares on ONE of the Windows 2000 computers. The network is peer to peer and with the exception of the Vista computer accessing this particular Win 2000 computer, everyone can access everything. (we are trying to share a printer on the Win 2000 computer, but the computer rejects the user name/password from vista computer). I have triple checked the permissions and when you try to access the share, you get a user name/password error. You can access the same share from one of the other win 2000 computers using the same user info and it works fine. All Win 2000 machines are SP3, we had some issues on one computer with SP4 and never installed it on any of our computers. Is there an update or a setting on the Win 2000 computer that would only effect the vista computer accessing the 2000 shares?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a home (workgroup, not domain) network with a bunch of Vista SP1 PCs and one XP SP3 PC. Before I upgraded Vista SP1 PCs to SP2, all PCs could see and share files among each other. After I upgraded two of the Vista PCs to Vista SP2, the XP PC cannot see their shared folders. The Vista SP2 PCs show up in the list, but when I try to see the shared folders I get an error message "\XP2PC is not accessible. You might not have permission..." etc. I've rebooted everything including the router. All the Vista PCs, whether SP1 or SP2, can see each other's shares. The problem is only with the XP PC -- it appears that SP2 broke something.

Permission from who? I'm the only account/admin on my computer. This is not the only time I have received some kind of error message reporting to me I need permission/higher access--it's also happened when I tried to "Immune" my computer from known viruses using Spybot - Search & Destroy.

One Dell running XP Pro, and two HP laptops (wireless) one running Vista Ultimate x64 and the other running Vista Home Premium x32. I have all issues resolved (that I've discovered so far anyway) except one. There is a shared external hard drive conneced via USB to the XP, which I have mapped to both Vistas. I can see it when I open 'My Computer' but when I click on it I get an error that says "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have appropriate permissions to view the item." The odd thing about it is that I can access the contents of the drive by right-clicking on it and choosing either 'explore' or 'open.' I can access drives mapped from the Vista(s) to the XP on the XP just fine, just not the other way around.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI click on view full map in Network and Sharing center on Vista, and I can see all the XP computers (because I installed the LLTD fix) sometimes I can click on the computers, sometimes I can't. I don't know why that is. Next, clicking on "View computers and devices" only shows my Laptop and router. Sometimes the other computers show up too, usually after a few tries or refreshes. When the XP computers do show up, and I double click to try to view the shared folders, I get the following error:
"Windows cannot access \Computer Name. Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose. Error code: 0x80070005 Access is denied."
Clicking on diagnose says this: "Windows did not find any problems with this computer's network connection." My firewalls are set to allow computers on the network. I've even turned them off and just let Windows Firewall do it's thing. I really don't understand the spelling error. I think if that can be fixed,
the network would work just fine.

View 9 Replies View RelatedRight now I have a single 640 gig HDD that everything's on. I've got a laptop too that I'm gonna be taking out on rotations eventually. I wanted to get a new smaller (250GB) HDD and put my Vista on that, so my 640 will be data only (then I could take it with me in an external enclosure and leave the desktop for my mom to use til I come back and collect it). I was gonna DBAN the 640, but I wanted to get the data off of it first- about 170 GB of stuff that I'd rather not lose.
My question is-
Can I install Vista on the smaller drive, boot with that, and access files on the other drive? Would it work if there's another Vista running on the other drive? (both SATA).
I try to access folders under my name (set up as administrator), most of the time I get access denied. It is driving me nuts. I want to change the start menu and get rid of a bunch of garbage but I can't enter the folder to do so. When I use the start menu program, it only has a few basic folders. This happens frequently, even when trying to view pictures or video in the folder. What do I need to change to remove this very annoying problem?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have my laptop connecting to a server under AD control. My laptop is not joined to AD by design. I set up some files using 'Sync' to have them available to me offline. My AD password has since changed and I cannot connect to the server to have access to other files set up for offline access. When I attempt to remap the drive, I get an error stating I am already connected using the credentials provided. This is not true, since I cannot access the server. What do I need to do to fix this problem?

He was setting the parental controls and managed to control his account which had admin access. the user listing has the account listing as an admin but he only has standard user access. His was the "only" admin account.. While he was doing this he managed to deny access to the boot drive. The drive reads as "Access Denied". The machine boots up and a person can play games etc.. but network access is restricted.
