View 9 RepliesI have a HP pavilion desktop pc bought about a year ago it has worked just fine until about 4 days ago when i first off got the blue screen to check for problems i restared the machine and it started up fine however the next time i power on and off again it boots to the windows please wait then screen stays on black screen with the curser and just sits there. I have tried to start in safe mode to see if i could run adaware and or other spyware removal tools but when trying to use safe mode i get the same black screen. I have gone to the F8 options and run a repair whcih came back with the following errors:
System Volume Corrupt. The file or directory/Program Files/common Files is corrupt & unreadable run the chkdsk utility. Also before this i went in and changed the boot sequence to boot form the HDD? not sure if that may have cause it to throw up the errors above. Now i ran a hardware test and all came back with green ticks stating no problems.
When i bought the pc i was not supplied with the windows Vista recoverycd and updon calling HP was told i would have to BUY it. which i wont do if i can fix it myself. Can anyone please give advise on anything i can try.
Everytime i use winrar (trillion times a day). User Account Control reports "an unidentified program wants to access your computer". It's not "unidentified" - I know what it is, i trust it & it's *my* computer - not Microsoft's. How do i tell UAC that? Or is it a Vista fail safe device to only allow the use of Microsoft Software?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI need to run Chkdsk. When I try to run it says it will run at next startup but never does.
View 5 Replies View Related I started getting this message when the computer boots (and my husband says it jumped up in the middle of something he was doing, so he shut it down)
CHKDSK is verifying files (stage 1 of 3) deleting corrupt attribute record (128, "")from file record segment 92792
What does it mean, what is causing it, what do I need to do and how do I keep it from happening again?
I purchased a Dell XPS M1330 with window vista 64 bit around Nov' 2008. I was so happy with my computer and was using it until it crashed on me last month =[Dell support told me that my hard drive was crashed so I was trying to get access to my pictures from my old external hard drive... However my Western Digital External Hard drive 500 GB has given me a hard time to access. [. I've tried many different ways to access my external hard drive but I have not been able to access it at all. I have tried
1. device manage -> designated the drive as J:
2. tried using CHKDSK j: /r/f -> but aborted due to unknown reason
3. tried using CHKDsK j: /r/x -> insufficient disk space to repair master file table mirrors; CHKDSK aborted. (I've done these methods by searching online... xD)
Here is my situation and I do not know what is the cause. In the past week four out of five times when I boot up my Vista computer after the initial post Vista is invoked. During the boot process the program wants to run CHKDSK because it says there is some problem on my c drive. Chkdsk goes through all steps and when done and reports the status of what it did it reports no bad sectors, nothing being repaired. Vista then restarts and then goes as though there were no problems. The next time I boot up if on the same day it will usually not request to run chkdsk. However, after the PC has been shut down for a period and then booted up CHKDSK will then again be run unless I abort the process.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have tried run chkdsk /f and chkdsk /f /v as an administrator. I have also tried through the tabs in My computer. I select the option to run chkdsk at startup but it bypasses an goes right into windows. Is there something I am missing. I really need to fix this because I am getting errors in the Log saying I need to run chkdsk.
View 4 Replies View Relatedchkdsk won't run at startup. Vista Business SP1, Lenovo 30000 N100. I've tried everything including:
- command line chkdsk c: /F
- sfc /scannow
- chkntfs (which says C: is dirty)
- changing registry .../Session Manager/BootExedute value to "autocheck autochk *"
- replacing autochk.exe with 6.0.6001.18000 version
- safe mode boot & command line chkdsk c: /F
DD has a HP Pavilion dv2000. Last week it starting saying that chkdsk needed to run on start up (there might be a problem). At first it ran to 4% and then stopped - appears to freeze. She left it running all night and then brought it to me. I let run over 5 hours.

"QuickTimePlayerMain: QuickTimePlayer.exe - Corrupt File

Please run the Chkdsk utility"
I opened up Chkdsk on my laptop and opened up Chkdsk as administrator (Whenever I just double clicked the command prompt box for Chkdsk would just appear then dissappear)
I tried to type in a command prompt after Chkdsk asked me the file type in the fist line but no input would occur. It then began to check itself and everything on the computer.
I would really like to retrieve the footage on the card since I will never be able to capture those memories again.
Check Disk Gets to Stage 2 17% And just stops.
Brings up the next line awaiting another command as if it finished.
I've tried Doing a System Restore But it cant since the files are apparently corrupted and check disk cant fix them because it doesnt get far enough to find them in the first place. Just wondering if anyone here could give me a tip on what to do. I would reinstall it but my computer didn't come with a vista disk.
HP Pavilion a6244, Intel Core2 Duo Processor 4500, 3G System Memory, 500 GB Hard Drive, Vista SP2 I am attempting to help a friend with her computer. Computer has started being very slow to start up between welcome screen and actual desktop appearing.I have deleted temp internet files, cookies, etc. and ran malware and virus scans and am now trying to run chkdsk. I checked for it to automatically fix file system errors and to scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. It appears to be stalled during stage 5 (verifying free space). It shows 112654681 to be checked and it is has been stuck at 9123650 for about 30 minutes now. What could this mean? Do I need to just leave it be, or how do I stop it at this point?

You can't do that whilst it is 'in use' yet it's always in use as soon as you start the computer (though I don't see why).
How can I perform a chkdsk on this drive? I'm using Vista Business 64-bit.
Chkdsk has found about 20 incorrect Index Entries - but can't correct them. Is there a good Registry Cleaner (fixer) that I can review?

I'm trying to repair my DSKCHK in WinRE. A woman from Miicrosoft sent me a paper telling how to do it,but not what to do if it never came up. View 5 Replies View RelatedI am getting messages to run a chkdsk for 3 different corrupt files. I was unable to run chkdsk. I followed all details I found on this website, but I dont have Session Manager under hkey_local_machine/system/currentcontrolset/control. I also tried to download the .reg, but no option to merge. I also lost all sound. It seems like problems just keep getting worse and more things are not working.

View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen I tried to make a backup I've got an error message saying:
Backup failed
0*80070017 cyclic redundancy control failed
I've searched the net for that code and they suggested chkdsk, I've done that and ran sfc/scannow with elevated privileges. Sfc did correct some problems but there is one problem he could not repair. I've looked at the log in c:windowslogscbs and searched with the tag [SR] to narrow down, and there was a problem that occured several times.
Windows SIdebar settings.ini is corrupt or missing (64-32bit program files) and when sfc tries to look for backup of the source file it also stated that this one is corrupted. So I was wondering I've someone knows a method to correct this? Maybe if there is a way to reinstall the sidebar my problem could be solved (?) I can't use System restore because I recently deleted those checkpoints, because of an space lack on that partition.
After uninstall CA and install McAfee My laptop cannot launch internet explorer 8, just not response. Also I try change home page from control panel-> internet option, but fail, it automatic reset homr page to microsoft sites. I can only launch the IE8 in safe mode.
View 7 Replies View RelatedRemoved a number of viruses, Trojans and other malware from the machine. It now fails on any attempt to do updates. It does the download, makes a restore point, says it's starting the installation, then fails.
Failure codes include (but are not limited to) 80070490, 80246007, 80070016
and C000013A.
The first one is the one that occurs most often. In addition, updates which the update history shows as having been installed successfully are now being shown as needing to be installed again. I've tried several of the KB article fixes, but haven't had any success. It looks like I've reached the repair install option, but the owner of the machine hasn't located their installation DVD yet.
