Chkdsk & Quicktime Dilemma
Feb 21, 2010
I recently have been trying to transfer some footage I took with a camera off a MicroSD card to my computer, but when I go to copy the file, I get an error bubble on the taskbar saying
"QuickTimePlayerMain: QuickTimePlayer.exe - Corrupt File
The file or directory /DCIM/100MEDIA/FILE001.MOV is corrupt and unreadable.
Please run the Chkdsk utility"
I opened up Chkdsk on my laptop and opened up Chkdsk as administrator (Whenever I just double clicked the command prompt box for Chkdsk would just appear then dissappear)
I tried to type in a command prompt after Chkdsk asked me the file type in the fist line but no input would occur. It then began to check itself and everything on the computer.
I would really like to retrieve the footage on the card since I will never be able to capture those memories again.

I purchased a new desktop the end of july and it came with vista 64. Ever since then, it has been trying to update with SP2 and it always errors off. Numerous other updates have failed also, .Net comes to mind, but several have installed without any problems. My questions is, since I plan on upgrading to Win 7 in October, is it worth my time to trouble shoot this and try to figure out why some updates do not update?

Since I use the x64 version of Vista, I am plagued with Quicktime's black bar, like everyone else out there on x64. I just find it ridiculous that after more than a year, this bug still remains. Makes me wonder if they may have even purposely put it there because I'm sure they aren't making any effort in fixing it. The only way that I know of to be able to see the bar is by running the browser in compatibility mode for Windows XP. I would do that, but the problem is that Vista then changes the Aero to Basic until the browser is closed. So you either:
1. Live with the black Quicktime progress bar.
2. Run the browser in compatibility mode and live with a changing theme (and if you already use the Basic theme by default, you're lucky)
Now, I know there's a program called Quicktime Alternative(QA) that basically provides the core functions of Quicktime, while letting you watch most anything that's in a Quicktime format through Media Player Classic. Question is, since I have to uninstall the original Quicktime to use QA, would it affect my iTunes? Do you guys know if QA can also do Quicktime's virtual tours and 360* views?
I also have the Vista Codecs installed, and for those of you that don't know, there's a Quicktime codec in there. While I get a better balance of colors in WMP than in Quicktime, the volume of the audio is too loud and distorts (not distorts the speakers, but the audio itself). So I don't know what else I can do... I am open to anything that doesn't involve changing themes or black bars...

Decided to replay the whole Myst series, so got the compilation set of parts 1 to 5. Installing on Vista Ultimate x64 (4Gb memory, Nvidia 8800GTX, etc) Myst (masterpiece edition) installs OK (just didn't let it install Quicktime 4 or directX 6 !)Can it really be possible that the original is dated 1993 ? (even this version is 1999)Forgot how little of the screen it used (especially in the middle of a 24"
widescreen)Is there any known way of forcing it to resize ? Masterpiece Edition ? Still looks like the old Myst to me. What about RealMyst ? Should I be substituting that for this first part.
Won't install.Presumably its a 16 bit installer (which of course won't run on x64) even though Riven itself is obviously 32 bit.Anyone know of a 32 bit installer ?Otherwise I am stuck with XP 32 on a laptop.Annoying as this is the one that I really wanted to play (1) never finished it the first time (2) on a bigger screen

My computer was working with no problems at all until I decided to download the latest versions of Itunes(7.6.2)/Quicktime(7.5) for some music shopping. At first, everything was still working as usual and I could play my purchased and downloaded music with itunes, winamp and the media player with no issues whatsoever. At the end of my session, I switched off my PC. The next day, however, my sound had completely vanished from my system. I don't get any system sounds, music, streaming audio... nothing at all. After I browsed a multitude of forums, both Apple and Vista, I still could not figure out what my issue was, as I had no hardware issues up to the itunes/quicktime installation. Nothing is muted. Speakers worked fine before the reboot. My Soundblaster X-Fi ExtremeMusic has all the necessary drivers installed and is being recognised fine. My onboard audio is disabled through BIOS. All my codecs and players were working fine until I rebooted, after installing itunes/quicktime.I was using a multitude of players without issues. (Zoom Player,CoreMediaPlayer,Winamp,VLC all worked fine). I used system restore twice, without success. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling codecs and players, without success. Uninstalling itunes/quicktime didn't help.
I'm at my wits' end. The problem clearly lies with the itunes/quicktime installation and something it did with my sound output or registry. I think I'm not the only one with this problem, but none of the suggested workarounds/fixes worked for me. I hope someone who had a similar issue can help me fix this, because I really don't want to format and reinstall everything from scratch.

I started getting this message when the computer boots (and my husband says it jumped up in the middle of something he was doing, so he shut it down)
CHKDSK is verifying files (stage 1 of 3) deleting corrupt attribute record (128, "")from file record segment 92792
What does it mean, what is causing it, what do I need to do and how do I keep it from happening again?

I purchased a Dell XPS M1330 with window vista 64 bit around Nov' 2008. I was so happy with my computer and was using it until it crashed on me last month =[Dell support told me that my hard drive was crashed so I was trying to get access to my pictures from my old external hard drive... However my Western Digital External Hard drive 500 GB has given me a hard time to access. [. I've tried many different ways to access my external hard drive but I have not been able to access it at all. I have tried
1. device manage -> designated the drive as J:
2. tried using CHKDSK j: /r/f -> but aborted due to unknown reason
3. tried using CHKDsK j: /r/x -> insufficient disk space to repair master file table mirrors; CHKDSK aborted. (I've done these methods by searching online... xD)

Here is my situation and I do not know what is the cause. In the past week four out of five times when I boot up my Vista computer after the initial post Vista is invoked. During the boot process the program wants to run CHKDSK because it says there is some problem on my c drive. Chkdsk goes through all steps and when done and reports the status of what it did it reports no bad sectors, nothing being repaired. Vista then restarts and then goes as though there were no problems. The next time I boot up if on the same day it will usually not request to run chkdsk. However, after the PC has been shut down for a period and then booted up CHKDSK will then again be run unless I abort the process.

chkdsk won't run at startup. Vista Business SP1, Lenovo 30000 N100. I've tried everything including:
- command line chkdsk c: /F
- sfc /scannow
- chkntfs (which says C: is dirty)
- changing registry .../Session Manager/BootExedute value to "autocheck autochk *"
- replacing autochk.exe with 6.0.6001.18000 version
- safe mode boot & command line chkdsk c: /F

Check Disk Gets to Stage 2 17% And just stops.
Brings up the next line awaiting another command as if it finished.
I've tried Doing a System Restore But it cant since the files are apparently corrupted and check disk cant fix them because it doesnt get far enough to find them in the first place. Just wondering if anyone here could give me a tip on what to do. I would reinstall it but my computer didn't come with a vista disk.

HP Pavilion a6244, Intel Core2 Duo Processor 4500, 3G System Memory, 500 GB Hard Drive, Vista SP2 I am attempting to help a friend with her computer. Computer has started being very slow to start up between welcome screen and actual desktop appearing.I have deleted temp internet files, cookies, etc. and ran malware and virus scans and am now trying to run chkdsk. I checked for it to automatically fix file system errors and to scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. It appears to be stalled during stage 5 (verifying free space). It shows 112654681 to be checked and it is has been stuck at 9123650 for about 30 minutes now. What could this mean? Do I need to just leave it be, or how do I stop it at this point?

According to Vista Back-up, I apparently have errors on my external hard drive that I use for back-up.
You can't do that whilst it is 'in use' yet it's always in use as soon as you start the computer (though I don't see why).
How can I perform a chkdsk on this drive? I'm using Vista Business 64-bit.

I am trying to repair the CHKDSK on my Vista Home Basic and I put the Installation disc in and nothing happens, what I mean by that, is it doesn't show that it is starting to go to the screen I'm looking for (not sure what to look for) but I'm sure it just goes to the Google Home Page like always. I'm trying to repair my DSKCHK in WinRE. A woman from Miicrosoft sent me a paper telling how to do it,but not what to do if it never came up. As usual I probably have something set wrong, anyone know what I need to do to get to WinRE from the Installation media? Its supposed to go to DVD-Rom thing but it doesn't.

I am getting messages to run a chkdsk for 3 different corrupt files. I was unable to run chkdsk. I followed all details I found on this website, but I dont have Session Manager under hkey_local_machine/system/currentcontrolset/control. I also tried to download the .reg, but no option to merge. I also lost all sound. It seems like problems just keep getting worse and more things are not working.

On some Vista Business systems I deploy, I need to be able to give non-admin uers the ability to chkdsk drives. I found the "Perform volume maintenance tasks" user rights policy, but that isn't doing it. Anyone know if it is even possible (I know some things can only be done by Administrators), and if so, how?
