Boot Into Old XP Install?

Sep 10, 2008

the issue that i have is that i was running XP pro and i wanted to upgrade to Vista ultimate 64 edition, now i tried to do this by launching the install from with windows but since it was a 64bit program this wouldnt work so i had to boot from the DVD and do a custom install. Now i did not want to reformat my HDD simply because i had no where to put my data, i tried to extend the partition of my 250gig hdd (both installations are on this one physical drive.) I am unsure if this is where my issues began or not. Anyways the install eventually completed, although i had to force the pc to boot from the DVD three times in a row to complete the installation. The install did complete successfully and i had full access/use to the vista 64bit OS.

I then rebooted my machine and it gives an error that a file (its something like ntlok.exe i am at work atm) is missing and it cannot continue with out it, After he OS selection menu tries to boot into XP there is no mention of vista in the OS list. My questions are, Does vista use the boot.ini file? If so how can i identify which partition number (not letter) vista is installed on so i can configure the boot.ini file to boot to vista? I have no use for XP at all and really just wanted to backup or move my documents and settings folder. Could someone provide an example of their boot.ini file?

Will Not Boot Following Clean Install

Mar 23, 2008

I apologize if this issue has been dealt with already but I can???t seem to find a solution. I have built a pc with AMDx2 4200, 2gb 800mhz ram, ECS AMD690GM-M2 board, sata 80gb hdisk, and pioneer dual layer drive. I have no add on cards and the motherboard is on failsafe settings. I have installed vista home premium 32 bit and the installation proceeds normally, and after the dialog boxes where the PC name is requested and the background, the system reboots and then does not boot beyond ?loading vista 2.1.2 ? starting ACPI ?. I have re-installed vista and the same problem occurs. I am not able
to access a safe mode.

I wonder if there is a simple solution to this I am not aware of.

Disc is full OEM (from NewEgg), and I was hoping to do an in-place upgrade, but just figured out that, that ain't happening,so I need to do a clean install. So, changed boot order in bios and
tried to boot from DVD. Screen comes up asking to press any key to boot from DVD, so I press it, and nothing happens, it just proceeds to hard-drive and boots up in XP.

Dual Boot.: Install Two OS's

Sep 3, 2008

Before anyone thinks "Oh another person asking how to install two OS's!!" Please take a seat and keep reading as I have spent literally hours trying to search other forums and sites for an answer to my problem. Upon upgrading my mobo + gfx card + ram + cpu my xp didn't want to boot. I found out the reason for this and took the following steps.

1 - Installed Vista Home premium x64 on a brand new Sata HDD.

2 - Transfered files from old hard drives to new Vista HDD to, in a sense, return my files programs etc to how they were before the "hardware misshap"

3 - All is fine and dandy..............

Install On Your Mac With Boot Camp

Nov 3, 2007

Ever since Apple switched over to Intel processor, the same processors that are used in some PCs, it has been possible to run Windows on the Apple hardware.  Why would you want to do this? While OS X is a pretty OS, Windows applications will not run on it. The only way to run Windows applications on a Mac is to run Windows in a VM.  With the Intel based Macs that changed. It is now possible to dual boot OS X and Windows so that you can simply reboot and startup in Windows.  Removing the need for the VM by natively running Windows has a big performance benefit. It also makes it possible to do things that were not possible with virtualization software such a 3D gaming.

To dual boot Windows Vista and OS X without destroying OS X you will need to use Boot Camp that is only included in OS X 1.5 Leopard.

To get started, you will need to follow these steps on your Mac:

Using the Finder, navigate through Applications, Utilities and run Boot Camp Assistant....

Bad BCD, Now It Wont Boot To Install CD For Repair?

Nov 23, 2007

I accidentally put vista into sleep mode. The video was all garbled and it was clear there was an issue. So, I hit the reset button on my tower to stop the mess. My next boot I got the error.

File: Boot/BCD

Status: 0x0000001

Info: An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data. It says to put in the windows installation disk and "click repair your computer." The issue is when booting to the DVD, on the page with the moving green bar and it says Windows Vista under, it hangs. I even left it there for 2 hrs. The HDD LED on my computer is solid the whole time too. All my hard drives are SATA and they are in AHCI which is turned on in the BIOS. Perhaps changing the drives to IDE would help?

Anyways, Id like to get into that repair CD so I can fix my boot sector so I dont have to reformat. This has happened before and Ive had to reformat. Im sick of it, I dont want to reformat Vista again. Incase you didnt already know Im using Vista Ultimate x64.

SP1 Won't Install Dual Boot System

Jul 8, 2008

I have (or had) Vista Business on my HP Pavilion dv2670br and I also installed opensolaris on it. I had read this article (Vista SP1 won't install on dual-boot systems: Microsoft) before installing the SP with the stand alone file downloaded from MS's website, but since I did not have Enterprise or Ultimate I didn't think I would have problems. Silly me.

Now I do not know if it is the grub loader itself or the fact that opensolaris uses ZFS. I tried going through the steps here: Recovering the Vista Bootloader from the DVD - NeoSmart Technologies Wiki, to no avail. I suspect I will have to go through a very destructive process, but thankfully I won't really lose much since it is a relatively new laptop with very little university work on it.

Boot Disk Failure After RAM Install

May 8, 2010

I've never really had any problems with my computer acting up. I decided to add 2GB more RAM to my system this morning. Once I finally got them in there after much prodding and force I turned on my machine only to get this dreaded error message. I made sure the cords were still connected to the hard drive. I then took the RAM that I had just added back out but the error message still persists unfortunately. I'm wondering if anyone might have a suggestion as to other techniques I can try to get my system working again. I am currently running Vista Home Premium 32bit.

Lenovo Clean Install Of XP And Wouldn't Boot

Mar 31, 2010

I got a Lenovo 3000 PC from friend who was tossing it ( wouldn't boot). Had no CDs for me, but I took it. I can mount drive in another system and the disk itself looks ok - but Vista is toast. I had already ordered win7 UPGRADE for another PC but now thinking - this will be my new box.So, I called Lenovo - ordered the original Vista home premium CD/DVD set and it will be here in a few days. I asked if it needs an oem partition to do a reinstall and was told 'no - these DVD's can be used in a brand new drive and will install fine.' I'd like to get the most from Win7 and it seems like to do that I need to upgrade from Vista and not XP. If I can I'd like to multiboot with XP too, so , could someone familiar with Lenovo as well as Vista/Win7 structure critique this plan:Partition drive - 4 partitions ? ( 1=XP, 2=Win7, 3=DATA and 4= Lenovo diag/utility partition)I install XP , then Lenovo Vista, then upgrade Vista to Win7Or will installing Lenovo disks wipe XP and leave disk with 2 partitions - one for me and one for diags ?

If I can have XP and Win7, any difference if I install all updates to Vista prior to win7 upgrade or will win7 end up the same either way if I wait until vista is installed , then go right to win7 then " windowsupdate" ?

How To Install 32 & 64 Dual Boot 4 Drives 2 Licensces

Mar 23, 2008

I have been loking but not finding instructions to install 32 and 64 bit Vista ( yes I have 2 seperate licensce -am not trying to cheat Microsoft). I had bought & installed 64 bit vista ultimate-however many devices and programs not compatible. So I bought the 32 bit version as well (i have an individual licensce for each version). SO in stalled the 32 bit version (wiped out the 64 as it interfered with the install). After a week of being on 32 bit, I find that I would also like to install the 64 bit version on a hard drive other thatn the 32 bit install.

I have scoured the Inet and MS sites but only see references to XP and Vista etc. Can anyone really help or point me to install instructions that will guide me on how to now install 64 bit vista so I can enjoy dual booting into either at BOOT? Please don't flame me for not being a genius...... but evrything I find is vague or does not adequately address the question.

Considerd Separat Install With Dual-boot

Jun 8, 2008

When I log on to my Vista Ultimate desktop, numerous startup programs that I have acquired over the years fire up, many of them parking themselves in the system tray. Since 95% of my computer use is low-demand web surfing and word processing, the many running programs don???t bother me, and I am glad to have them at hand. But once in awhile I like to run Flight Simulator or edit home videos; at those times, I???d like Vista to be running nearly bare-bones. Many of the startup programs exist for all users, so it doesn???to simply create a new user for gaming or graphics. Is there any way to have a pre-prepared profile having a radically minimized set of startup programs? I know I can simply click them off through msconfig or control panel, but that is pretty cumbersome. I???ve considered a separate install with dual-boot. (Side issue ??? would that present any validation issues?)

Delayed Network Connection On Boot - Clean Install

Jun 8, 2008

I decide to re-baseline my desktop home system with a fresh install of Windows Vista Ultimate. Everything seemed to install correctly. Vista picked up most of the drivers and I was able to supply the ones it didn???t. After setup and re-boot, I noticed that the desktop/sidebar appears reasonably fast, after which there is a delay of about a minute with some disk activity during which the Network icon in System Tray has a red X. After about a minute or so, there is a great deal of disk activity (the system seems to be paging). The delay continues further until finally the yellow exclamation symbol appears, quickly followed by the globe icon. The system then functions as normal. The delay can be anywhere between 1-3 minutes. My motherboard has 3 network connections; 1 direct connection to my NAS server, 1 to the ADSL modem, 1 wireless.

Dual Boot: Install Separate Instances Of All Programs

Jul 24, 2009

I've never dual-booted a system before and I'm interested in dual-booting my Vista with XP. I know they have to be on separate drives (though I'm under the impression that a partition is good enough... is that true?) but my question is: do I need to install separate instances of all of my programs (e.g. Steam, Office, Firefox, etc.) or can I just point XP to their locations and everything will work fine?

Repair Install: Interfere With System's Ability To Multi Boot?

Jun 29, 2008

I partitioned a new hard drive and formatted it using my Windows XP Home Ed. SP2 Install CD. I then installed Win XP. I then installed Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit on the other partition. ( I have two partitions on a single drive, C: and D This has been working great for me for the last 5 months. Today I have a reason to perform a repair install on just the Windows XP partition. I have performed a Win XP repair install successfully in the past using the XP SP2 install CD but never when my system was set up as dual boot. If I perform a repair install using my WinXP install disk to repair the Windows XP installation, will this leave my Vista partition untouched? Will it at all interfere with the system's ability to multi boot? I'm not very concerned about not being able to boot up into Windows XP but it's extremely critical that my system's ability to boot up into Vista is not compromised.

Memory Upgrade: Install Additional 2Gb, I Get A Blue-screen Every Time I Boot

Is there a way to determine if my installation of Vista already has this installed? I've already checked the Control Panel/Windows Update/Review Update History, it's not in there, I thought it may be in the core install on the DVD?

Having Two Copies Of Vista On One Computer: Install Vista On The Smaller Drive, Boot With That, And Access Files On The Other Drive

Dec 25, 2008

Right now I have a single 640 gig HDD that everything's on. I've got a laptop too that I'm gonna be taking out on rotations eventually. I wanted to get a new smaller (250GB) HDD and put my Vista on that, so my 640 will be data only (then I could take it with me in an external enclosure and leave the desktop for my mom to use til I come back and collect it). I was gonna DBAN the 640, but I wanted to get the data off of it first- about 170 GB of stuff that I'd rather not lose.

My question is-

Can I install Vista on the smaller drive, boot with that, and access files on the other drive? Would it work if there's another Vista running on the other drive? (both SATA).
