BIOS Settings, Not Support Booting Hard Disk

Apr 1, 2008

I am not having fun installing Vista on my new computer. At first, I did not touch any of the BIOS settings. The Install program recognized my hardware but said it was 698.6 GB which is a bit too small. There was a warning that said, "This computer's hardware may not support booting to this hard disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu".

I ignored this message and I clicked on this item in the list that showed my hard drive. There are little icon buttons at the bottom of the window. Few are enabled. One that is enabled is one that showed the "new" option. I clicked on that and an error appeared: "Failed to create a new partition on the selected used space. [Error: 0x80042453]". So I guess "new" is not the option to click on. I went into the BIOS settings.

When trying to install Vista I get:

When I press NEXT I get:

Windows is unable to find a system volume that meets its criteria for installation.

RAID 0 Setup On X64 Home Premium:computer's Hardware Not Support Booting To This Disk

Mar 26, 2008

I'm attempting to set up a new PC with RAID 0 using Vista x64 Home Edition Premium. However, I'm having no luck. (Hours of scouring various forums have yielded nothing as well.) I've set up 2 RAID 0 partitions across my 2 SATA drives using Intel's Matrix Storage Manager. (CTRL + I thing at boot). When I load up Vista for installation, it recognizes the partitions but refuses to let me install on them. I get an alert at the bottom of the screen saying that my "...computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu."

I'm not completely clear on what this means, but after entering BIOS, I have my drive configuration set to configure SATA as RAID. Attempting to continue the installation yields something like "Windows cannot find a drive that is suitable for installation" (not verbatim, sorry.) I have downloaded all of Intel's drivers for my motherboard and have even hunted down the RAID driver for my HDDs. I put all of those files onto a USB drive, but Vista doesn't seem to recognize any of them.

Toshiba Tecra M5 BIOS Support For Bitlocker In TPM Mode?

Mar 23, 2008

I have a Tecra M5 (PTM51E) running Vista Ultimate. I would like to configure Bitlocker using the TPM which is on board. I am aware that Bitlocker can be used without a TPM, but this requires the user to have an external token e.g. on a USB drive which they have to insert at boot time. I would rather use the TPM mode so there will be no need for this.

I have flashed the BIOS to v3.60 which is the latest. Before I was able to flash the BIOS from within Vista (which is the only option provided on the Toshiba European support site) I found I had to load the drivers for the "Value Added Package", without this the BIOS updater simply says "Computer not supported". Another way to do it is get the BIOS for the PTM51U from the US site which allows you to write the BIOS updater onto a bootable floppy...........

BIOS AND Not Seeing 2nd Hard Drive

Jun 10, 2008

I have upgraded from Windows XP Service Pack 3 to Vista on a Toshiba Qosmio G35-AVA600 which has two 80GB SATA hard drives. In Windows XP the drive was seen as one 180GB hard drive. No problem. After I installed Vista the second drive is not showing and I can't format it from disk management services because it is not shown.

The wierd thing is that I am not missing any files, but perhaps I had not used any space on the second hard drive, therefore I wouldn't be missing any files. Also, after installing Vista I checked the BIOS and it does not see my second hard drive (it lists second hard drive and says "None"), nor does My Computer but it is there as I have made no hardware changes. All I did was upgrade from Windows XP Service Pack 3 to installing Windows Vista. I have the latest RAID drivers from Toshiba which was updated after I installed Vista. The latest BIOS was installed from Toshiba website BEFORE I upgraded and it WAS listed in the BIOS. I've read the many threads on second ATA hard drives but no one mentions that their BIOS does not recognize the drive as well as Vista.

Booting Another External Hard Drive

Apr 23, 2010

im using windows vista. i just recently bought a 500gb western digital external hard drive. i would like to know, how can i install an operating system on the external hard drive and keep the one that's currently on my pc, i would like to use the external hard drive to keep different documents, games, applications and files on, and to randomly boot of. (so its like their are two computers.) also will booting of another external hard drive have any affect on my computer or current files or hard drive.

one last thing, could i use the external hard drive to store flies on like i normally would. so what im asking there is that, do you have to use the whole external hard drive as an operating system, or could you sort of partition the external hard drive, so you could boot of it, but also connect it to a computer and use it like a normal usb when your not booted of it. sorry if this sound confusing i know a bit about computers but not too much.

Hard Disk Disappearing:How Do Regain Hard-earned Gigabytes

Oct 18, 2007

1. I have a 120GB hard disk that shows a capacity of 105GB. No problems there--I understand that there's a restore partition and GB vs a billion bytes

2. My hard disk says that 54GB is being used.

3. However when I drag and select all folders in my C: and click properties, I only see 28GB of usage. This leaves an unaccounted-for 26GB.

I've just run disk cleanup and cleaned up my shadow copies before verifying all this. Besides at a MAXIMUM, system restore should only eat 15% of my hard disk (18GB). What explains this loss? How do I fight back and regain my hard-earned gigabytes?

How Dead Secondary Hard Drive Stop From Booting?

Sep 8, 2009

I tried to connect my computer to my HDTV and Vista decided it didn't want to load. It would get the to initial Microsoft Corporation load screen with the scrolling green bar and instantly lock up. Wen't back to my normal 19" monitor and had the same problem. It would boot into safe mode - after hanging on crcdisk.sys for an extended period of time (around 10 minutes). System restore didn't fix the problem. I started playing with components which turned out to be a frustrating game of trial and error. I narrowed the issue down to one of my hard drives (I have 4). When it is unplugged, everything is all good. When I connect it again, Vista locks up on boot. So does Vista point-blank refuse to start if there is a faulty drive in the mix? Keep in mind that all it had on it was movies and games, no crucial system files. And would anybody hazard a guess as to what has happened to the drive, and if it is recoverable. It's a Seagate 500GB.

How Can Make Boot Disk For Update BIOS

Mar 19, 2008

So have an intel mobo, and there is a BIOS update for it, but the windows exe that Intel provides to flash it right from inside windows doesn't work in Vista 64 Ultimate. So My other options are to create a bootable USB stick or a bootable CD. I actually don't have a USB stick I can use for this, so I want to go the CD route. Either way I don't know how I can make a bootable Vista disk that gets me to a command prompt that I can put these bios files on so then I can run the bios update. I think this BIOS update could solve some problems I'm having getting things running smoothly.

Corrupt Disk After Format With Linux Settings.

Mar 6, 2009

I was trying to install Fedora 10 (linux distro)
but I had accidentally changed settings for both hard drives.. Meaning I formatted both hard drives.. and when the installation failed, I had the error "no operating system found"

I had a C:/ drive
and an X:/ drive.. I can't see my C:/ drive.. but in CMD I'm using X:/ but it was formatted so.. hehe.. no operating system..

I used the Vista DVD.. I tried to format but I get a disk error.
(corrupted)

Now I'm not sure what to do to format my drives to NTFS..
I wana get my data back aswell.. But I doubt it'll be there if it's there.. I can't see..

I just delete to partitions from disk 0..
So I have 153 Gb free space..
But Windows install says "Windows is unable to find system volume that meets its criteria for installation" ?

Changing Boot Drive But Still Booting From Old Hard Drive

Mar 26, 2008

I've upgraded my machine at some point in the last year, where I added a new 500GB drive and moved my C: partition across to it. The previous 250GB drive was left in for additional storage. Just recently (while upgrading my BIOS) I realised that my system was still booting from the 250GB drive even though Windows was on the other disk. There is a fair possibility in the not too distant future that I'll replace the 250GB disk with a larger disk, in which case I won't be able to boot. Is there a safe and reliable way to change it so that the system boots from the 500GB disk?

Hard Disk Is Threshing

I have had a problem where, apparently at random, my hard drive starts running and ties up my laptop to the point nothing will run. This lasts anywhere from 5 to 18 minutes. I have not been able to reproduce this on purpose, but yesterday it happened 3 times when I started either Outlook or Foxfire. Today it happened when I tried to sync my PDA. I have tried to turn off any indexing I can find, but no help. It doesn't always happen every day, but will do it several times a week. I am running on a Toshibe Satellite laptop with Vista Home Premium.

Why So Much Hard Disk Activity

Jun 6, 2008

We have 2 identical Dell XPS desktop PCs, both with duo 2.66 processors, 240 GB hard drives, and running Vista Home Premium SP1.For a few years now we've been using a Linksys cable modem which has 4 Ethernet outlets (numbered 1-4) and paired antennas for Wireless-G. My PC was on Ethernet output 1 and my wife's PC was on a Wireless-G adapter. Recently my ISP doubled its speed to 16,000 kbps, but this seemed to have very little effect on my wife's Wireless speed. Rather than hassle with the wireless system, I uninstalled the Wireless-G adapter and ran a new Ethernet cable from output 2 to my wife's PC.The weird thing is that when both PCs are turned on and connected to
the Internet, my PC (Ethernet 1 output) seems to be continuallyaccessing the hard drive. While this is happening, the output 1 and output 2 LED's on the modem are madly flickering, as is the disk access light on the PC. No unusual hard disk activity is going on with the wife's PC. If I shut down either PC, this excessive hard disk activity doesn't take place and the output light (1 or 2) is steady. I've even tried leaving both systems totally inactive for many hours, other than an automatic check for mail every 5 minutes.

Every 1/2 hour or so I'd look in and see that the hard drive activity is still going on and the output lights are flickering. Whatever is going on is happening whether the PCs are active or idle. This has been going on for 3 days now, 16 hours a day, ever since I added the new Ethernet line!
