Event Viewer In Administrative Tools

Oct 17, 2009

I have a sound trigger for the 'Open program' event in Vista Basic sp2 x32 When my computer is idle and I "here" a program open the only thing I have to go by is the time it occurred. If I want to go to Event Viewer in Administrative Tools and see what this event was that triggered the event sound I'm overwhelmed with a bunch of categories and sub-categories. In order to find what opened at the specific time I need to check each category and sub-category. That is a real pain in the ass. I find no search capabilities in Event Viewer unless I've missed it. Is there some way of making a hunt for a specific time easier in Event Viewer? Or, is there some 3rd party software with the capability to sort all events by data and time??

Recover Administrative Tools Default Services (local) Settings

Aug 24, 2009

Re: Vista Ultimate 64-bit I changed settings for several Services - disabling some - etc & made some trouble for myself.I did find some tech web pages that suggested how to edit/make large scale register changes - sounded risky. Can I return all the Vista/Administrative Tools/ Services back to their default settings - within Windows Vista - without having to reinstall or make other drastic choices? I do have backups but failed to note the dates of changes I made to the settings.

No Administrative Privileges On Administrator Account?

Jun 11, 2009

I installed vista ultimate x64 on my PC. After a while, I ran into some programs that requested I run them on the Administrator account. Not wanting to have to right-click and select the option every-time I installed something, I decided to enable the Administrator account with the command I found on the net, namely net user administrator /active:yes Restart, log into Administrator account, all is well. Naturally, not wanting to re-install all the programs, I simply copied the AppData, Documents and Desktop folders from the previous account over the ones in the Administrator account. All is well. I want to install a program and I receive the error message that I, the f-ing Administrator, don't have the privileges to install the program to it's pre-specified directory. So I go to the ProgramData folder (that's where most programs go) and check the Security properties. Administrators and System accounts have full permision enabled in every single sub-section of the option.

No Administrative Power While On Administrator Account?

Nov 3, 2009

I am running on windows Vista (32bit). I don't think any other specs are really necessary, but I can provide them if they are needed. Basically, I am having a lot of problems all through out my computer, all coming down to the issue of not being the administrator, or having administrator privileges. When I go into Control Panel > User Accounts, it shows me (The only account) as Administrator. However, I am not being recognized as it.

I've been trying to uninstall an old version of Microsoft Office. When I access it via Control Panel > Programs & Features and go to uninstall, it gives me the error "You do not have sufficient access to uninstall Microsoft Office. Please contact your system administrator."

Also, I have an external hard drive full of files that I would love to be able to organize (Moving and deleting files) and anytime I try to move or delete any files I get the error "You'll need to provide administrator permission to move this folder". It gives me two options of "Continue" or "Skip", both of which close out of the window and do nothing. How can I take control of my own computer? I am sick of this

Lid Open Event

Mar 20, 2009

I've just got my new Alienware m17 and I can't find a way to disable the "Lid Open" event. I've disabled the lid from making the system go into stand-by, but the moment I open the lid, it wakes up again. I've tried using : Code: powercfg -devicedisablewake "ACPI Lid"
But all I get is "You do not have permission to enable or disable device wake", and yes... I am logged in as an Administrator.

All lid related articles on this site (and others) seem only to refer to problems with Closing the lid rather than Opening it. I know it's a minor issue, but I don't want to wake up my system until I press the power button. I've even checked the BIOS settings but there isn't even a Power section.

Event ID 2017 And 2021

Mar 6, 2009

I'm running Vista Ultimate x64 with SP1 and I'm having an issue with file sharing. If I try to copy files from an XP machine to the Vista machine, the System log on the Vista PC fills up with 2017 (The server was unable to allocate from the system nonpaged pool because the server reached the configured limit for nonpaged pool allocations) and 2021 and I get an error on the XP machine about there not being enough memory to fullfill the request. I have tried a couple of registry entries, like disabling SMB2 and setting MaxMpxCt to 255; neither of which have resolved the issue. I'm still able to browse the network from the Vista machine, so it looks like it's only incoming connections into the Vista machine that are the problem.

75,000 Identical Entries In Event Log

Feb 18, 2009

Every three or four days I review my Event Log. The log for two days ago on my laptop (Vista Home Premium SP1) system has approximately 75,000 entries that are identical, all logged over a four-second period. The entry reads:

(Event 51)
An error was detected on device DeviceHarddisk2DR2 during a paging
operation.

According to MS, if this occurs on a primary drive (like "C" I'm guessing - they don't say, actually) the drive could be failing. They go on to say "Otherwise, no user action is required". The error cites "harddisk2" so unless MS has decided that drive numerations start a "2", I'm guessing this is something having to do with an external drive; possibly one of my USB drives. What is strange is that I haven't plugged in an any drives for five days or so.

Should I just mark this down as some sort of Vista glitch, as I am tempted to do? Or, is this just one more thing to worry about? I do know what paging operations are, and why they sometimes fail, but this particular set of entries puzzles me.

Event Viewer Not Start

Apr 7, 2008

I've been struggling with this for a couple of days now without any success, I noticed the the event viewer would not start, it reported that "Event Service is unavailable. Verify that the service is running" Well, the service was not running and my attempts to start Windows Event log result in an "Error 5: Access is denied"

So to Google I go. I tried several things that I found there, taking ownership of files, resetting the whole system to default permissions by using a Microsoft
utility. That reset everything except one folder that it reported as an error. That was the EtRTeventLog folder, this seems to locked out completely. I renamed the folder using Unlocker and Windows recreated a new folder but I still have the same problem.

Event Name: BlueScreen - On Home Premium

Nov 10, 2009

I've searched thoroughly for this but could not find an aswer to this problem I'm having on my laptop. I've had a BSOD twice now within the last month. After the first one, I had to do a complete re-install as system files were damaged. I thought it must've been some virus, but apparently it's not, as I've done a new install and it happened again. This time so far it's seems ok after the reboot though.

The funny thing is that the system running extremely well otherwise - there are no other problems, slowdowns, freezes, hangs, nothing like that. Here's what I was doing just before the BSOD: (on both occasions, the circumstances were EXACTLY the same!) -I was surfing the net with IE8

-other programs running in the background: utorrent, Total Commander, Notepad As I say, both times I was doing the same: reading some forum in IE8 with exactly the same apps running in the background and then suddenly bang!..........

Can Set Key Words In The Firewall To Flag This Event?

Jan 20, 2010

You receive the message that your computer is infected and you can see the scan running behind the message box with the OK button? Is there a process to follow and a time frame before all the bad things take root? I have received the message a few times and did the following with what appears to be positive results:

Do not click OK!! Try to close the window with the X box. Shut the computer down in normal fashion. If you cannot do a hard shutdown.Reboot into the safe mode with no networking and run your scans.Reboot normally update your antivirus and scan again. I throught perhaps someone with a lot more knowledge could post a process to follow when you get this message. Is there a way to set key words in the firewall to flag this event??

Install Vista 64 Event Log Errors

Sep 2, 2008

i have been getting issues with lock ups in vista, not sure what is causing the issue but suspect its driver related possibly with video drivers. I am sure this has been talked about previously but have tried lots of other peoples fixes but still get the same problem. Clean install vista 64 with no problems or event log errors, do a create system restore point. Install crucial updates only restart and check event viewer with no errors, create system restore.

Install latest Nvidia mobo drivers restart and check event viewer no errors, create a restore point. Install Nvidia beta drivers restart and check event viewer with lots of errors seemingly appear unrelated to driver so uninstall drivers and do a system restore point to before the install of drivers. Cleaned log of errors and restarted to make sure logs are still clean. Installed signed Nvidia drivers 177.41 and restarted and checked logs to find i still got some new errors but not as many, during the point of loading video drivers the first time i get errors and random lockups.

I was going to uninstall the drivers again but it locked up so after reboot when i got back to the desktop it was as if i didnt install the video drivers at all only the directory on C: was there but no interface or anything wierd? I then installed the drivers again and restarted, it seem to shut down and boot up much faster this time and seem to work fine at this point but still get random lock ups with no info in event viewer or BSOD?
