Access Denied: My Documents Or My Music Folders
Oct 31, 2007
When I try to access the My Documents or My Music folders in my user account folder, it says Access Denied. Also, when I tried to disable indexing for my hard drive, I was denied access as well. Do I need to be on the root admin account to have access to these things? How do I get rid of all these annoying restrictions so I can use them on my regular account? I have UAC disabled.

Vista won't allow me access to my own documents folder outside of Word07, and won't allow me to save documents to any other folder. So I can't attach documets to emails, etc. or even open them with another program. What has happened? I don't recall having set any premissions that would exclude myself from my own user folders. I'm logged in as an administrator, by the way. Has some security update reset my permissions, and if so how do I get them back to something reasonable?

I try to access folders under my name (set up as administrator), most of the time I get access denied. It is driving me nuts. I want to change the start menu and get rid of a bunch of garbage but I can't enter the folder to do so. When I use the start menu program, it only has a few basic folders. This happens frequently, even when trying to view pictures or video in the folder. What do I need to change to remove this very annoying problem?

In Windows Vista Home Premium there appeared new restrictions on some (not all) folders, like Application Data, Desktop, Documents etc. They all seem to have in the lower left corner a little square with a blue arrow pointing toward 2 o???clock. When I try to open these folders, I get: ???Access denied.???
When I check the security of the folders (right clicking the folder and clicking security), I notice that the accessible folders have Gerhard (DesktopGerhard) listed, whereas the non- accessible ones have Every-one. But when I try to add in the non-accessible folder Gerhard (DesktopGerhard), it says:???The following object, Gerhard (DesktopGerhard), is not from a domain listed in the Select Location dialog box and therefore not valid. I???m the only user and have administrative privileges. These restrictions did not exist before.

I have a HTPC running vista ultimate 32bit, 250gb OS drive and 1tb mirror storage drive (need some fault tolerance since my pics and music will be stored here.) I would like to have this machine also act as a mini server and be able to share out the folders housing my music and my pictures. ( makes it easier for me to dump off my recently taken pics from vacations that i may have dumped onto my laptop, and now that i am back home would like to dump back to the vista machine.) This machine is also part of a domain (a whole other nightmare to get vista to join my domain) My server is running windows 2003 standard.
I set folder permissions and and i just can't seem to get passed the access denied. when trying to open up one of the vista shared folders. from the domain controller i mapped the folders that i need and i can open them but can not make any changes or create new directories. what am i doing wrong? I know i am no expert when it comes to networking but xp has never given me this much of a headache. *the reason it is on a domain and not a workgroup - is to broaden my skill and familiarity with working with servers, Domain controllers and Active Directory*

There are nine folders I can't open. Each displays a message that says "access is denied". I am the admin (the only user). I even ran the windows explorer in admin mode (run as administrator). A few that give this message are: C:UsersJohnapplication data; also cookies; local settings; start menu; etc. I tried to set the security of these folders, but access was denied for that function too.

Am still in early days with a new computer with Vista. In Windows explorer, and when using Office, I see shortcut icons labelled things like "my music", "My videos", "My documents" which seem to be hangovers from XP, but all of which give "access denied messages when I click on them. So why on earth are they there? Can I hide/delete them?

You know when you make a standard account, it creates a load of folders on the C: drive. I have more than a tera byte because of the volume of files on the drive. Way too many to even consider using C: for anything more than the absolute minimum required OS.
I think back to my C=3D 64/128 and the GEOS OS. Even though it was all on the same drive, it was arranged more like an office, than any windows OS I've ever seen or used. Is there a way to take the 'pictures, music, documents, personal, etc..' and convert those folders to shortcuts to my actual pictures, documents, music, etc. that ALL programs can see and access?

Don't you just hate it when you have an operating system that WON'T let you move all of your Documents, Music, Photos, and Videos from Partition C to Partition D in one single click? I mean, this Windows Vista is the easiest to use right? WRONG! I should be able to tell the OPERATING SYSTEM that I WANT ALL MY STUFF ON D, and that when I GO TO MY FOLDER AND CREATE A NEW ONE, IT SHOULD BE CREATED ON D, NOT C! We need an update for this... There is now way around it, I mean, I DID MOVE ALL THE FOLDERS INDIViDUALLY, to find out that I STILL WRITE AT C:Usersusertest WHEN I WANT TO WRITE AT D:usertest! We had this at XP, but not on Vista? So, Microsoft is actually downgrading their operating systems now?

I think I might have a good one for you.. I am working on an Acer 5610z Notebook for a friend of mine. He was setting the parental controls and managed to control his account which had admin access. the user listing has the account listing as an admin but he only has standard user access. His was the "only" admin account.. While he was doing this he managed to deny access to the boot drive. The drive reads as "Access Denied". The machine boots up and a person can play games etc.. but network access is restricted.

I'm using Vista Enterprise. The Music folder under c:useruser namedocuments is missing. It was there at one time. The shortcut to the music folder is available but it does not access the Music folder. If I right click on Music from Start my options are copy, rename, properties. Selecting properties brings up a general tab that is completely blank. I created a folder called Music but when I install iTunes it says it cannot find the Music folder to add an i Tunes folder. Which is how I discovered the Music folder was missing. Even with the i Tunes folder in Music that I created the Music General tab is still completely blank. How do I fix this? I'd like to continue to use iTunes.

I built a new computer and installed clean Vista Ultimate 64bit. I had backed up all my documents to an external drive. After installing Office 2007 on the newly rebuilt machine I opened the Documents folder and copied all of my documents back. However, now I have 2 Documents folders, one with only the Desktop.ini in it and the other with ANOTHER Documents folder with all of my documents (basically a DOCUMENTS folder under a top level DOCUMENTS folder). Why is this happening? How do I fix it so that I only have ONE Documents folder?

I apologize if this is a duplicate question- I have searched this forum and not found this topic. In WinXP, when selecting View Folders, I would see a closed folder, with 4 small images of the folder contents. I liked this as I instantly knew what images were in my folder. I am drilling down as follows: Documents, then the folders come into view. These are the folders I am discussing here. Windows Explorer gives the same results.
In Vista, I get a partially open folder, with the contents partially visible, but cascaded so as to obscure the contents under the first view. I've tried all the possible options I can find withing Vista, including Large Icons, etc. I have searched online for how to make the folders give me the preview pane as in XP, to no avail. I have tried numerous fixes found online, but they do not work. I may be using the wrong terminology, but I have spent two months trying to get the folders to display as in XP. Would someone here know a fix for this?

OS: Vista Business; upgraded from Win XP Pro SP3. Joined to a WinSer 2003 domain. I just noticed that I have (near) identical files and folders in my C:Documents and Settings folder and the C:Users folder. Is this because it was an upgrade? Is there a way to eliminate one of them to free up some
HD space?

I have what appears to be an odd issue, and I can't find reference to it on the web anywhere. Under the Public folder on my Vista machine, I can see the folders Public Downloads, Public Music etc. BUT Public Documents is missing.
If I use the cmd shell, I get the same effect:
Directory of C:UsersPublic
11/05/2008 16:54 .
11/05/2008 16:54 ..
13/04/2008 08:37 Downloads
11/05/2008 16:54 3,403,458 Library.xml
11/05/2008 17:13 Music
15/02/2008 18:16 Perl
12/02/2008 19:15 Pictures
26/04/2008 08:25 Recorded TV
05/04/2008 11:11 Videos
HOWEVER the documents folder does exist. I can CD into it and see my files. From within explorer, I can enter C:UsersPublicDocuments explicitly and get to the folder, but is does not show up under C:usersPublic.....

How can I gain FullControl of my machine? I have turned off UAC. There is only 1 account. That's me, and I'm the Administrator. I right-click on Documents and Settings in Explorer (or whatever it's called now) and I get "Access Denied?". I am NOT interested in Microsoft's idea of security. I want absolute control of every file on my machine. If I can't have control, the machine is useless to me.

for having me everyone... My first question about Vista (many more to come I'm sure) is how come my access to the C: drive is denied? I get the following message when I attempt to create a new project in my audio program (Cubase LE): "C: is not accessible. Access is denied." Earlier today I was unable to unzip an installer I downloaded to the C: drive. How do I gain access to it?
