64bit Gaming Crashes, Freeze Screens
Jan 29, 2009
First system I've assembled with a computer savy friend.Asus P6T deluxe,i7 940,Corsair DDR3 Dominator 1600,Evga Gtx 280,PcPower and Cooling 860watt,Vista Home Premiun 64bit,Creative Xi-fi Fatl1ty sound card. My problem is playing Cod 5 Waw,I'm getting freeze screens.Always black horizon but lower graphics still showing. If I hit Cntrl,Alt,Delete out of the game then hit cancel in Vista.I can get back into game.If it lets me back in the game it will usually not crash again and work well.Other times I get disconnected. Other games I'm getting strange thin lines of color across screen.I've adjusted ram frequency to 1.65 using xmp in bios.Didn't solve problem.Did make it much smoother when it does work good.Using driver 180.48 I've updated evga driver and newer ones crash more.Do I need to adjust some other aspect of system to get total smoothness?

I was having constant blue screens in my new Gateway comp. Its a laptop, M Series, 15.4 inch screen. It brought along the Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit OS with SP1. Dual processors, 4GB of memory. After countless of blue screens, they seemed to come and go, I figured the comp was just being dumb. I unistalled all the things I had placed on it [which really wasn't much] so the laptop was running with all the things it brought from scratch only. Blue screens disappeared for a day or so, and then came again, though with less frequency. I was using it today, left it for a few minutes, and when I returned it had gone to the usual stand by mode.
Moved the cursor so it would restore, but after twenty minutes of a blank black screen I decided to turn it off and on again. And that's when it started to refuse to boot. Whenever it tries the bar appears for a minute or so, and afterwards it's replaced by the BSOD. To my disdain they always disappear quickly, so the most I can read on it is something about a driver malfunction, or whatever, and the error code 0x0000007E. So yeah, if anyone has a clue as to why it won't boot, and how to fix it, I'd be grateful. Of course, I could just re-format it -- but I want to leave that option as a last case scenario.

I am currently in the process of configuring a new Dell XPS 630. I want the system to be primarily for gaming. I have yet to use a PC with Vista, so needless to say I am not familiar with it, let alone the difference between Vista 32-bit and 64 bit systems. The price difference between the 32- and 64-bit systems that I am debating between is very small. Anyway, my questions and concerns are. Is there an advantage to having a 62-bit version over a 32-bit version of vista when it comes to gaming? Any performance problems/issues of one or the other?
If I get the 64-bit version, will 4GB of RAM be enough for gaming or do I need more? Which processor will be better... Intel® Core™2 Q6600 Quad-Core (8MB L2 cache,2.40GHz,1066FSB) or Intel® Core™2 E8500 (6MB,3.16 GHz, 1333FSB)? How much hard drive space does the OS take up? Would a 500GB hard drive be a decent size. (assuming I plan to remove most games after they are completed)Here is the configuration Im looking at. Price with shipping comes to $1216 USD. Plus I have $550 worth of Dell gift cards I've been saving. Nice thing is 19in monitor is included.........

I am currently running Vista Home Premium 32bit (OEM, sadly) and would like your advice. I am planning on building a new PC over the summer (as I can finally work for decent wages!) and I want to make it a beast. I'm not going to go completely crazy; I'll have a budget of around €1,500 to €2,000. For the most part, I have a good idea of what I'll be getting (X38 Intel mobo, E8xxx Core2 or Quad, R700 ATi or 9xxx nVidia etc) but when it comes to RAM I'm a bit stuck. Should I get 4GBs and a cheaper 32bit version of Vista or go for the 64bit? I know 64bit can theoreticly handle alot more RAM than 32bit, but with 4GB is it worth spending the extra cash on 64bit, or will 32bit handle it just fine? (And by "handle it" I mean utilise it fully. I dont want to find only 3GBs out of 4GB are actually being used...) Aslo, for the 64bit users out there: how is driver support? Are you encountering many problems with games/drivers/hardware?

I have a problem regarding my Vista installation. I'm using it for a while now but since a few days I get lots of freezes, hangs and crashes of my Vista and I cannot figure out what is causing these crashes. I'll explain the symptomps first: Somethimes it happens after the PC was running for hours sometimes it happens right after logging in. When the PC starts to freeze first one or two programs will stop to react, until everything freezes and won't react anymore. Funny about this is though that I can still talk in Vent and hear until the very last moment. Sometimes though the entire systems just starts to lag like crazy. If I have task manager opened there's no prcess using up CPU% other than System Idle Process. However in Reliability and Performance Monitor the CPU is usage is at exactly 50%. One core (I run a Core 2 Duo) is always at 100% and the other is at 0% and suddenly they switch and the other will be at 100% while the first is at 0%. That happens until finally the CPU calms down again. Just a few second after that though the system will BSOD and tell me a crucial system process was terminated....

I recently installed 64bit premium on my XPS 420. I am having tons of problems and cannot find solutions. If I leave my computer on and idle for about 4 hours (or any length of time)it goes to a standby..normal. but when get back on it, everything is screwy. If I plug in a flash drive it won't read it. If i try to turn off the computer or restart it, it dosnt shut down, it just goes to the screen where it says its shutting down but never shuts down. Programs act funny and freeze up a lot.

I'm new to windows vista having recently bought a new computer and am experiencing a range of different BSODs. They range from issues to do with CACHE_MANAGER to SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION and normally take place when performing memory intensive activities (such as playing games or using music composition software). Doing a small amount of research into these messages around the forums seems to indicate that they are a memory error, although that neither helps or narrows down the problem . I have limited knowledge with computer diagnostics but am more then capable of following instructions.
I have also started to collect as much information about the problem as suggested on many threads, my most recent crash data sets are contained below: SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION Problem signature: Problem Event Name: BlueScreen OS Version: .0.6001.2.1.0.768.2 Locale ID:3081............

I purchased a digital update of Windows Vista Premium upgrade and the download won't load. I am useing a trial version of Windows XP 64-bit. I first used the digital locker a few times and it would stop at 99 percent and give a validation error. I figured it the locker was having a problem so i manual downloaded the three files through my internet browser. They downloaded fine without problems, but when I tried to run the Vista setup I ran into another error: 0x8007000D Windows was unable to create a required installation folder.

I do not remember exactly when it started, but I keep get blue screens.
I tried to format the computer after the problem began to worsen and it did not help.
I can say that I can know when is going to appear a blue screen, first of all
Internet disconnects and software not responding and then the blue screen appears and I need to do reset.

Never could get my LCD screens properly cleaned. All 'special' products for cleaning leave them with stripes. Being a real man, i tried using WD40. First little corner on oldest monitor, ended up cleaning my flatscreen TV with it. It renders the screens as new, i tried putting the screen on background black and it was spotless. completely OT, bathe an old speaker overnite in WD40 makes any old scratchy speaker come back to life

I have received the bluescreen at least 20 times. Although I don't record the details each time, they appear to be different each time. I thought it was just a faulty laptop so I returned it and was given a new one and I am still getting the bluescreen. It usually appears after I install new software (installed printer) however I can receive upon startup as well...............

Recently my computer has been more frequently running slower and generally not working as well as it has been. Its less than a year old and running vista home premium 64bit. It happens if i have a lot of programs running eg: using dreamweaver, photoshop as well as having an internet browser open etc. It use to run fine with these programs running at the same time, occasionally now they wont respond and pressing ctrl alt del opens a black screen and after a while a message comes up saying logon failed security dialog box. It also occured earlier just browsing the internet with a slow loading page which i closed and tryed top open the network centre. It decided not to respond and ctrl alt del resulted in the same as above. Also occasionally when starting up after i log in there is a black screen, after managing to open the task manager processes slowly start to begin and the main desktop appears as usual.

I don't feel like paying a support tech nearly 60$ for a piece of software that is supposed to come with free support.

I can't see all the text in certain Vista screens and cannot access the bottom of the screen (i.e. sounds, DPI settings). I couldn't install the Vista SP1 because I cannot access the area to check off "I Accept". These screens cannot be made larger and have no sidebar sliders. In DPI Scaling box (which also does not show all text), the "Default scale 96DPI" choice has a strikeout line through it and it is grayed out. The only choice is "Larger scale 120DPI". My monitor is about 4 years old, 17" LCD Flat, eTronic brand 1710. Monitor settings in Hardware is PNP Generic.

Now I've had this for, i kid you not, less than a day, and blue screens of death/restarts keep occuring. I have norton 360 running and updated, updated my graphics driver for my 9400, updated everything I could through windows update, and still this problem presists. Sometimes, the blue screen will just briefly flash, then restart and it gives me the option of choosing if i want to go into safe mode or not. Also, i changed some setting on my internet connection, through cmd.exe, i changed everything this video told me to When i attempted to go back and reverse it, it said that elevation was required and the command failed on ipv4.
The blue screens have varied in what they say, they always dump my physical memory so i never get a chance to fully read them. However, they have said all of the following. MEMORY MANAGEMENT Something about a bad page file And a few more i cant remember Right now, my pc runs fine for a while, but most of the time when i boot it up, it says rundll32 has encountered a problem and must close. Sometimes this forces a blue screen to appear sometimes it doesn't. I also thought it may have been heat, but i was runnining my computer fine for 15 hours straight or so when i got it and it was ok, but then showed a blue screen of death for memory management. Currently, it runs in this strange windows 98 style, the icons, toolbar, start menu, everything is windows 98 looking. Also, it displays a rundll32 error and somestimes a windows process error everytime i start up. I ran a memory diagnostic and it said there were no problems.

using the short-cut target line in XP I could set games to run in window or at a different resolution. How do I do this in Vista? More Specifically I want to run Atlantica Online in smaller res than 1024x768 so I can leave I running in the background but still keep an eye on it while i surf the net (a small resolution like 640x480 would be ideal). I tried editing the target line with no success. Any ideas?
If the above is impossible are there any third party programs that would allow me to resize the window how I want? Or allow me to divide my screen into multiple screens/desktops?
