64bit Disk: Get Dish Through The Alternate Media Plan?
Mar 26, 2008
I purchased the business version of vista from Windows marketplace, then I performed an anytime upgrade to Ultimate, now I would like to change to vista 64 but I don???t have a disk and I am not sure that my current key will work. I called Microsoft about obtaining alternate media (64 bit disk) however they informed me that I couldn???t get a dish through the alternate media plan because I bought from marketplace and not a retail canter. This is nuts to me. There must be some reasonable way to get a 64 bit disk in which my key will work without purchasing an entirely new version of vista. I mean dang I paid a ton for this, and now with me still playing fair they won't send me a 64 bit disk or let me purchase one for a minimal fee. Surely there must be some avenue I have over looked.

A bit ago a person on here said they were able to upgrade their academic vista ultimate 32bit from their school to the 64bit version through the alternate media order. HOW? I have tried and it says offer not found. I have a copy now of 32bit vista that is doing me no good at all since I have 4gigs of ram and a 64bit processor.

About 3 days ago I visited this URL...
Windows Vista home page
I wanted to order the Windows Vista x64 DVD that already had SP2 on it since the media I have is a version of Vista without any service pack on it which has the memory bug where Vista has issues installing on systems that have over 2GB of RAM.
I should have ordered the media when I saw it on the page, because now if you follow that link, you get redirected to...
Windows Vista home page
Which pretends to be about Vista, but shoves 7 in your face. But anyway, I'd like to know if anyone knows where that page went? I desperately need this Vista x64 with SP2 media, as my Win7 beta will begin to expire soon, and I'm not ready to upgrade to 7 just yet. TIA. :-)

I recently purchased a new Dell with Vista 32 Home Premium (OEM). I would really like to try out 64bit Home Premim. If I purchased a 64bit OEM disk could I install it on a partition on Drive C and still retain a fully functional 32bit Vista.
Note : My system has 2 x 640 gb Sata Drives, but the way it has been configured, in windows explorer I see only a c: drive (1.15Tb) and a d: drive which is only 10gb, this is a recovery drive.

Using WAIK, I created the autounattend.xml file by putting it on a DVD of Vista Ultimate SP1 64 bit.

When, however, I do the boot from the DVD, Vista does not erase the disk and does not create the two partitions indicated by my file.

For reasons that I have yet to determine, my current computer is killing motherboards. I am assuming it is a virus so my friend is going to do a virus scan from his MAC to make sure my hard drive is clean. I decided to order a new HP (my current computer was home-built with the assistance from an IT savvy friend). To be more specific, it's model M8430F from best buy. Now for my question: Assuming my hard drive is not the root cause for the motherboard failure, it has XP and some 3D design programs that I use on it. I'm a little nervous about using Vista on the new computer to run these programs. Therefore I was wondering if I can install my current hard drive (SATA) into my new computer (HP M8430F) which is Vista based.
I'm not 100% computer na?ve? although it makes sense in my head that I should be able to boot from either hard drive I understand that there's a lot that I DON?T understand and therefore am posting here.
New computer with Vista Hard drive from old computer with XP = Can I install XP hard drive and choose to boot from it when I want to use specific programs currently installed on it?

I have several contacts in my Windows Mail Contacts that I have mutiple e-mail addresses set up. (Using Vista). When I start typing the contact name in the "Send" window, only the "Preferred" e-mail shows up. How can I select their alternate e-mail address in the "Send" window?' I have tried right clicking and just about everyting else. There must be an easy way to bring up a list of all the e-mails in a contact (both preferred and the others) so I can then select which one or ones to send the message to.

After three months of failing to make two Vista Business PCs network via a crossover cable, I gave up and I now have the following:
A Netgear GS605 (5 port) ethernet switch. To this switch, I have connected two identical Vista PCs (call them A and B), and a Livebox.
Computer A connects to the Internet perfectly well via the Netgear switch to its attached Livebox; computer B connects to the Internet using a wireless connection to a different Livebox.
However, the PCs can not see each other.
On computer A, all I can see is "Network", "Access: Local and Internet". The network map shows "This computer->Gateway->Internet".
The network is Private On computer B, I see the wireless network (Private) plus "Local Area Connection", "Unidentified Network", "Access: Limited Connectivity".The Local Area Connection is Public and will not stay Private when I change it. After a short time, or a reboot, it reverts to Public.

Hi! I've just gotten a new Vista machine after having XP Pro for a few years. So far, I've had no difficulties and am qvery pleased with perfomance etc., with one exception.
In XP, the moment I pulled the plug on my laptop, it would switch power plans to my "battery" one (i.e. darken the screen, change how it shuts down and so forth.)
In Vista, when I pull the plug, other than the screen going darker, nothing happens. I'm told that I'm still in "High Perfomance" mode, which could affect battery life.
So how do I tell my computer that when I switch to battery, it's to change plans to Power Saver automatically?

Many of the guides on this forum recommend setting the Vista power plan to "High Performance". After some research, I've found that the Balanced Power Plan is equal, if not better, in performance while also saving power. Instead of copy everything over to this thread, I recommend you read my info here: Power Plan Controversy - Notebook Forums and Laptop Discussion

Is there a way to get Vista to automatically change power setting plans depending whether a laptop is on mains or battery? I want to run mine on high performance when plugged in but on balanced when using the battery. I know I can manually change which plan to use, but surely there must be a way to get Vista to recognise which power supply it is using and change settings accordingly.

I recently bought a laptop with VISTA. My software will not run on it. I have contacted the seller of the software and they do not plan to modify their software to run on any platform except XP. I did buy XP and install it on the laptop. My program does run, but many of the basic PC functions do not run properly. even the mouse pad and keyboard acts very erratic. It is driving me crazy! I am ready to give up and buy a different laptop. When I look for one via Google, all I get are ones that run VISTA or 7. I would be willing to even buy a used PC. I need a reputable source. I need around 2GHZ and 3MB. All the basic functions PLUS XP. I am not a gamer.

I purchased a digital update of Windows Vista Premium upgrade and the download won't load. I am useing a trial version of Windows XP 64-bit. I first used the digital locker a few times and it would stop at 99 percent and give a validation error. I figured it the locker was having a problem so i manual downloaded the three files through my internet browser. They downloaded fine without problems, but when I tried to run the Vista setup I ran into another error: 0x8007000D Windows was unable to create a required installation folder.

I find a media file (video file, for example) and double click it, the Media Player doesn't start at all...
I tried to re-associate the Windows Media Player to it's default media extensions through "Default Programs" , and it doesn't work...
All media files play normally on other players. I have to state that sometimes I get the message: "The file.... The parameter is incorrect".

Media center keeps popping up, I have not been able to find a way to disable it, so that I can use the program only when I want. It is very tiresome to keep have it. open when ever I pop a cd or dvd in to my drive. I would like some control over which program I use to view/listen to the media I have, and not have one pop up automatically.

Is it normal for Disk Defragmenter to Analyze the disk AFTER it defragments? I know it does it before and then I click 'Defrag Now' and it proceeds to defrag my hard drive. But today I was watching it and noticed that all of a sudden it stopped defragmenting and the info changed to 'Analyzing disk...'.

I'm struggling to find a clear answer on this. Within our environment, we've been ordering Dell PCs for quite some time. I've been told that about midway through the ordering of Dell GX620 Optiplexes that the cores went from single to dual. In effect, I've been advised that these machines and, subsequently everything we've ordered since, are considered 64bit compatible because they have two 32bit cores. Does that sound accurate? What I truly need to know is whether or not any of our PCs (Dell 745, 755 and 760 E8400 Core 2 Duo for desktop; P8400 for laptop) have 64bit hardware. If two 32bit cores mean that they're 64bit compatible, is that the same as being true 64bit? And, last but not least, will 64bit compatible hardware (assuming it's different than 64bit hardware) run a 64bit OS like Windows 7?

I am a relatively unexperienced windows vista user using windows home premium at 32 bit on an acer aspire 6920 notebook. I noticed that occassionaly my disk space would drop dramatically without me doing anything. 100s of mbs would just disappear for no reason, so probably being stupid i decided to run the disk fragmenter to try and fix the problem. BUT to my horror i was shocked to find that the disk fragmenter began to eat up my hard disk space big style. I went from 79.7GB to 72.5GB in just over an hour. What the hell happened and can it be fixed? can i get my disk space back? i thought the disk fragmenter was supposed to help your computer not rob it. does anyone else have this problem and can someone please help me? im kinda desparate, i cant believe it.

My Disk is split into 2 partitions, Vista (C: ) and Data (E, each is about 70 Gb. I do not use the Data partition. I want to delete it and allow Vista(C to use all 140 Gb. The Help pages suggest that if I delete (or reduce the size of) "Data", the free space becomes unallocated? Can I repartition the disk to allow Vista C: to acces all 140 Gb?
