I've been using the windows update tool to manually keep security and bug patches current on my laptop but every time (tried four times over several months) I install sp2 it breaks most subsequent updates. After installing sp2 most of the subsequent updates fail with a nondescript error code that suggests corruption in system files when I try to install them.
I use the system restore to go back to the point before sp2 is installed and everything is OK again. It passes the KB947821 update readiness tool without reporting any problems. Installation of sp2 itself never reports any errors. it's only subsequent updates that fail..........
Has anyone else noticed when installing Vista SP1 that there VPN connections will no longer work? This has happened to me and here's a link to Microsoft Forums where others have reported the same issue with their work VPN's no longer working I'm curious to find out how many others are affected by this problem and when we can expect a fix from Microsoft? NOTE: for people who do experience this you can get it working again by uninstalling SP1.
I am really frustrated with this wireless break down problem in my laptop. I am using HPDV2315nr laptop standard US configuration. I have moved to UK recently and my laptop has developed strange problem. My wireless internet gets disconnected every 30 min if i make my computer go in sleep mode and then restart it works fine and gets connected again.
In system properties my operating system is listed as Vista Home Basic - Service Pack 2. However whilst looking into some general performance problems I checked the Windows Update History. I see that Vista Service pack 2 (KB 948465) failed on three occassions producing error codes 800706BE, 80004004, and 80010108 and there is no "successful" subsequent update. I have not manually updated to service pack 2. How can I tell if Service Pack 2 is actually installed or installed correctly? Is it sensible to download service pack 2 manually and try to install it when most of my performance problems are now solved?
I've got a Sony VAIO with GeForce 7400Go. Doom 3 and my OpenGL programs run fine before Vista SP1 and crash at startup after SP1 update. I notice the nvidia driver installed is 2006/12/19, version 7.15.10.9754. Sony does not have any new driver on its website and Nvidia does not provide drivers for laptops. I'd like to know which is culprit of the break of my opengl apps, Vista SP1 or nvidia driver?
Before SP1, I use to be able to switch between users with no problems, now with SP1, the second user will never load right. It dosent matter which user logs in first, the second one will always be messed up and the only way to fix it is to restart. Logging off dosent fix it, the second user never works right unless you restart. This is a very bad thing for me, I need to be able to switch users on the fly.

I have a home (workgroup, not domain) network with a bunch of Vista SP1 PCs and one XP SP3 PC. Before I upgraded Vista SP1 PCs to SP2, all PCs could see and share files among each other. After I upgraded two of the Vista PCs to Vista SP2, the XP PC cannot see their shared folders. The Vista SP2 PCs show up in the list, but when I try to see the shared folders I get an error message "\XP2PC is not accessible. You might not have permission..." etc. I've rebooted everything including the router. All the Vista PCs, whether SP1 or SP2, can see each other's shares. The problem is only with the XP PC -- it appears that SP2 broke something.
Desktop PC will be one year next month. I did not renew the Microsoft Office after trial period that came as a package w/ no future intention of acquiring it. I'm using the free Open Office program - word processing mostly at this time. Is there anything in the list below that is of importance? I only have a basic PC with DVD player for movies, etc. No scanner, printer or fax. Not even external hard drive or usb flash drive. Otherwise, I understand that I can just choose to hide the updates, so it will not keep reminding me. Also, I choose to keep my OS w/ Srvce pk 1 and MS IE version 7 for as long as I'll be able to. I had too many probs with Srvce pk 2 and MS IE version 8. Your opinion, if any, is welcome.......
When I type a long article in Notepad & paste into WindowsMail line breaks become messed up, forcing me to go back to editing "business" and click/delete redundant line breaks as often as there're lines in a document, if it's 1000 lines, go ahead and spend time clicking for an hour! This make plain text editor unworkable In Vista +WindowsMail environment, due to weird linebreaks handling. Why do I claim it to be weird? BECAUSE IT WAS PERFECT IN WindowsXP. I could create a simple ad/artcile in Notepad, copy/paste into OutloookExpress --> Newsgroup posting or Email, and no linebreaks stupidity. Another hemorrhoid in Vista, sometimes I have a forbidden thought: If WinXP could live for another 10 years albeit with security updates & new hardware drivers that would be nice. When I hear "Vista" it causes heartburn.
I have Windows Home Premium 64 Bit and every time I restart I get a message saying 1 to 3 updates ... I then see this message again on startup. I feel like something is wrong with the update system. I reinstalled Vista and disabled automatic updates. However, after a while I started to get the same problem. I have Office, Visual Studio, Messenger and a few Adobe products installed.
I was kind of hoping this would let up for a while.
In my previous post Having trouble deciding which updates to install , I was having issues with my computer freezing after installing some updates. I found out that not all the updates that Windows tells me about actually apply to my computer. The issues are now resolved and I have even downloaded SP1 withouut issues! (Imagine the Snoopy happy dance here) This morning, 5 more updates appeared. I have my computer set to tell me about them, but not download til I tell it to. I have looked them up on the Microsoft website, but wanted to ask advice before I go ahead and install and put my foot in again... They are: 4 updates for Windows Vista, 3 important, 1 recommended KB951978-the website says this one is for XP SP3? KB952709-improves reliability KB955302-I have seen some posts on other forums describing issues installing this KB957200-reliabiliy (not much more info than that) and KB 940157 Windows Search 4D for vista. Recommended.
Vista Home Basic. Trying to check for updates comes up with error 0x8007051a. The link provided does not include this error number. Each boot shows a "Configuring Updates" message. An immediate reboot after successful log on shows the same message. I have done a full System Recovery to rebuild the OS but it gives the same error. Naturally trying to install SP1 fails too. Windows Update service is shown as "running".?
A Windows update could not be installed (Error Code 42D9):
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 3
So, I downloaded it from:
Download details: SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP3
I installed it, but the update was still showing and it still wanted to install the update - but I thought that's what I just did manually! Why did it still want to install it?
I hid the update from the Windows Update screen.
The next day, two updates came in - security updates for: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 and Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2
The update for Service Pack 3 installed successfully but the update for Service Pack 2 failed (Error Code 733F).
I hid the Service Pack 2 update, but it keeps coming back!
Just wondering why anyone would turn OFF the Windows automatic updates? The update options give the user that choice and I just don't see why anyone would choose that. Isnt the whole idea of automatic updates to keep your PC up to date with important Microsoft information?
I have Vista Ultimate installed on a laptop. The onboard audio uses Sountek as the driver but Vista keeps installing Realtek AC'97 as the driver for it. The realtek driver puts my audio into a situation where I get the red 'X' bu the speaker in the taskbak, along with something about 'No audio device is installed'. When I einstall the Soundtek drivers, the audio comes back and works fine. Windows update has installed the Realtek drivers about 5-6 times in the last week and it is time consuming to keep reverting it back to a functional state. Is there a fix to keep this from happening in the future?
I checked windows update (as I've been doing once daily to see if SP1 has been offered yet [no cigar]) and looked at my update history and found that two updates have downloaded and installed without my knowledge. I checked my settings again just to be sure and found the settings still set to "download, but let me choose whether to install." How did those two updates just miraculously install and I didn't do it? So, I went one further and changed the setting to "notify me when their are new updates, but let me decide to download & update." I think it's haunted.
I'm trying to update Vista Home Premium, on a laptop I have just purchased.
Everything seems to have gone fine, apart from several updates which have failed.
Some of the failed updates are:
Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (KB948465) Update for Windows Live Sign-In Assistant (KB967912) Security Update For Windows Vista (KB967723) Security Update For Windows Vista (KB970710)
In total there are 43 failed updates, the majority of which are listed as "Important". So, my question is how do I get these installed? I've followed the troubleshooting tips but can't find any help here. I've searched online, but nothing seems to help here either.
Is it possible to acquire Vista Updates from one computer and transfer these to another one? The reason I ask is because my Vista machine only has a dial-up connection, but my work machine has broadband. So, can I 'grab' the updates on my work machine, save them to a USB or ext. hard-drive and transfer/install on my home machine?
Maybe this is a dumb question, I don't know. I reformat my computer about twice a year to keep things ship shape and one of the most annoying things about it is getting back all the windows / microsoft updates. Is it possible to back up all the updates you have on your computer to speed things up?
Also, if I have Vista SP1 as my install disk, and have SP2 saved to a disk can I just go ahead and put SP2 on right away or do you have to get all the little in between updates that came out before SP2?
Earlier today my computer had updates to intall so i clicked to install updates and shut down. This evening when I went to turn on my computer it said that iy had to run disk chk as it did this it said that file after file was corrupt and repairing this took a few minutes. After this the normal log in screnn appeared. I clicked on my name typed in my password then the screen went black and the pop up went as follows
Windows Activation Reinstall Windows Windows must be reinstalled to activate. Insert the windows installation DVD or CD into your computerto begin the reinstallation process.
I placed the cd in and nothing happened. I then started in safe mode and tried a system restore, but then I found I have no system restore points anymore. I tried to start with last known good start up but the same message appeared. I do not want to have to do a clean install as I have important work on my computer which isn't backed up.
Everything was relatively hunky dory until a recent update which prevented my machine from booting. I went to system restore, and it worked. Tried the update again with the same result, and again I did a system restore. Clearly this update is a problem for me. Can anyone tell me how to disable updates?
I have had this issue for many months, now. I loaded Vista x64 Home Premium to run in a dual-boot configuration with my XP Pro. I do critical work so I didn't trust going to Vista exclusively. I mainly wanted it to see if I could utilize all my RAM and speed up Photoshop processing. I have had it working three or four times, (except for tablet functionality) then when I must re-boot because of SP1 and other security updates or in one case, I installed Office 2007, it does nothing on restart; black screens and just sits there, totally unresponsive.
No blinking of the LED which shows drive activity. When re-booting, F8 isn't working (nothing happens). Regarding the previous instances, I gave up trying to get it to respond and went back to booting into XP, which always works fine. Then after a period (usually a month or more) I will try booting into Vista, on restart, and viola, it works again! WTF is going on?
I am having some trouble getting to download sp1 for Vista to my home computer running Vista Home Premium. First, various microsoft articles say I should first have updates 950127, 935509 and 949939. My update history shows other prescribed updates, but not these. My windows Update app does not say I need them. In fact, my Windows update app does not say that sp1 is available. I checked article 948343, but find none of the explanations for this omission to match anything in my computers history.
Lastly, when I find the download article for sp1, it has a huge 5 language version, and says that it should not be used for single computers. I cannot find a single computer version of SP1 to download. At this point, I am afraid to download the 5 language version. Can someone advise me how to solve the Windows Update problem, and straighten me out about thos pre-requisite updates?
I have 3 updates to Vista Business that will not install; SQL Server 2005 Express SP3 (KB955706), Security Update for SQL Server SP2 (KB954606), & a Security Update for PowerPoint 2007 (KB951338). Over the past few months I have tried updating in safe mode, ran upgrade as admin (even thouigh I log in under admin user group), put the Office CD in the drive before updating, updated in safe mode, unregistered the dll's... Other updates install fine.If I had the time I'd reinstall Vista, but I really do not have the time or patience to do that right now.
I have recently installed vista ultimate on my new pc, i did it as an upgrade from xp. Everything works fine and the pc is well up for vista showing a 4.9 in the experience index. The problem i have is that vista has downloaded 33 updates and they will not install, when i click the start button, then the install/ shutdown button it runs through the installing procedure for about 20 minutes than shuts down, when i next reboot the system it says "configuring updates" runs like this for about 20mins then starts as normal. When i check the installed updates, they all show as failed.
I am having trouble with my windows updates. Updates history shows that all updates have successfully been installed. However, when I turn on and off my computer, I get a screen "configuring updates - 3 of 3". The computer takes ages to start or turn off....
