Won't Release IP On Shutdown
May 1, 2007
I am not totally sure this is an XP issue or a laptop issue. At my workplace we have about 25 laptops that all go home for the evenings with the users. The users who go home and connect to their routers they given at IP (DHCP) and everything is fine. When they shutdown the laptop and bring it to work the next morning the laptop acts as if it never left the previous network and tried to keep the same IP, causing conflicts on our network. If you disconnect from the network at home, shutdown, then come to work it works fine

This has been a problem for me for about 2 years now.I've seen many other people complain with the same problem, but have never seen a viable solution (it's always what brands, switch channels, winsockfix, firmware, etc.)Wireless connect (Belkin Wireless Pre-N card)Win XP SP2 (updated as far as it can go) The problem: Connection becomes unstable(i.e. slow) for about 2-5 seconds, then utterly fails to connect...can't access web, can't access local address(i.e. 192.168.1.1), can't ping anything. When using DHCP on router, doing a repair (i.e. release/renew clear ARP cache, etc.) fixes. If using static IP, then I must assign a new IP. That is, I have to go from say 192.168.1.110 to 192.168.1.111
The problem is not unique to a single ISP & router. I have two networks I can access. For troubleshooting sake, I made them both unencrypted (although WEP, WPA makes no difference to the problem). I have also tried multiple channels in the theory of interference, and channel strength for both networks are good(using NetStumbler). Both networks are on far channels from each other (i.e. 1 & 11), and there are no other networks detected in the area by WinXP or NetStumbler.Net #1) Ameritech DSL Modem ->DLink Router ->Belkin Pre-N Wireless(access point). Router logs in PPoE (the DSL modem's "router functions are turned off"), Belkin access point has NAT turned off. (don't have the exact model numbers in front of me, but it's irrelavent, as the problem transcends manufacturers.

Microsoft made any announcements about whether they will release a Service Pack 3 for Windows XP this year? If so, I haven't heard anything, and Microsoft service packs usually generate a lot of media attention. I thought perhaps Microsoft would bundle SP3 with the upcoming Internet Explorer 7. If there is no SP3 on the horizon, I suppose Internet Explorer 7 will be released by itself.

I have an XP pro machine that takes forever to release memory. I have several applications that when they need over 100 MB seem to hang the system, when I open task manager I can literally watch the memory count slowly back down to zero. Is there anyway to solve this problem.

This is weird. I have to go through the shutdown procedure twice, i.e., Start/Shut Down/Shut Down and click Ok, then Start/Shut Down/Shut Down and click Ok again. It will then shutdown properly. The same thing happens when I try to "Restart." After doing the first shutdown sequence, everything is normal. I can open programs, surf the web, etc. It's as if I never tried to shut it down at all. Only after the second shutdown procedure will it shutdown fully. One note: When I go through the first shutdown sequence, my taskbar pops up and the desktop is darkened. After clicking Ok, the taskbar autohides and my desktop returns to its normal color.I have only had this problem for the last month or two. Before that, all was fine. It's not critical since I can shut it down. It's just annoying to have to do it twice.I have Windows 2000 Pro, SP4, build 5.00.2195.

When attempting to "shutdown" or "reboot", I have to do it twice. When I select "Start" then either shutdown or reboot, my desktop will flicker a couple of times, and then nothing appears to happen. I must select "start" again and then either shutdown or reboot and then they will work as expected.

I'm not sure if I'm putting this in the right forum. Here is what I need help on if it can be done. After using remote desktop you either click logoff or disconnect. When you select logoff the xp client I believe is at the Ctrl, Alt, Del screen. If you select disconnect I believe it's at the screen that says your computer is locked press Ctrl, Alt, Del to unlock. Is there a way maybe using a group policy to actually just release the desktop so it's not locked or logged off?

Every time I start up windows cmd.exe opens up and the command to shut down is made and it shuts down. I have temporarily solved this problem by renaming cmd.exe just to another name of cmg.exe so that it cannot be opened but I do run batch programs so have to keep changing the name when required. Any suggestions would be helpful as to sort this out.

for quite awhile now both my computers but they seem to work pretty good although alittle slow. but when you go to shut them down, both of them a box comes up and says ending program where you can wait for it to end the program or you can click on end now. well it doesn't matter which you do most of the time the computer won't shut down. it just keeps going back to the end program box. It is always this program--iexplore.exe always that one. One time I looked into the task manager and it had like 5 or 6 of the iexplore.exe in the application part. anyway it is getting quite annoying. I ran asquared when this was happening and it caught what it said was a trojan (didn't write it down) I deleted it and it seemed to work for awhile. But now it is back to the same ole thing. Can someone enlighten me on what might be wrong? It is on both of my computers.

I keep getting the NT Authority shutdown every now and again (maybe every three days or so), but I do not have any viruses, worms, trojans, etc, that I can find. Secondly, when I reboot the pc it comes to the wallpaper but wont go any further, I have to reboot three times or more before it works. the pc keeps dropping the broadband connection, then immediately saying it cant reconnect as the modem is in use, and I have to reboot before I can connect again. I cant find how the modem is in use. Also, random programs tend to crash now and again, and when I click to submit the report and get more information, it tells me microsoft cannot determine the cause of the crash. It isnt any particular program or any particular task/time.

When I go to shut down my computer, it freezes. Two ways to reproduce it, first is to click start -> shut down -> freeze.Second is ctrl+alt+del -> shut down -> freeze I can't undo.I can undo the freeze if I use the start menu, by hitting ctrl+shift+esc and then ending explorer, and restarting it. But I still can't shutdown safely. If I try to shut down with ctrl+alt+del I get a freeze I can't get out of.First thing I checked was my virus scan, and ad-aware, made sure they were both up to date, and ran them both. Defragmented my computer also. One thing about it, it doesn't happen all the time. Only if I have been running the computer for more then 20 minutes or so. That caused me to take a screen shot of task manager, and then when shutting down at then end, compare the two. The only thing that had changed was one more instance of svchost.exe and because I have it show PID I knew which one was the new one, and ended it. Windows still didn't shut down.Another thing is, I can log off by using ctrl+alt+del and then log off. It's just when ever I hit shut down, either in start menu, or in windows security, it freezes before it can bring up the menu to pick which shutdown option I want. This is really bothering me, as it's not good to just pull the plug every night when I need to go to bed, so I'm trying to figure out how to fix it, without any luck so far.

As you all probably know, you can create a shortcut that will automatically shut down your PC, by creating a desktop shortcut of C:WindowsSystem32Shutdown.exe. There is a catch: if you accidentally press it, there is no convenient way to stop the shutdown sequence. (you can create a CANCEL SHUTDOWN shortcut, and have the shudown shortcut have a delay (-t 10, for example), but that is cumbersome, and will take up even more desktop real estate.)So i had this idea for a solution. I tried creating a keyboard shortcut for the shutdown shortcut (and was going to do the same for the Cancel Shutdown Shortcut). And, it worked fine. The point was that I could get rid of the little shutdown shortcut icon from my desktop. So, I moved it to a file in My Documents, so it would still be available, just not sitting on the desktop. (Note: I even repeated the above process, starting in another folder, instead of starting at the desktop and the following problems still occurred)

I would say about half a dozen times in the past few weeks when I tried to turn off my pc the computer rebooted and I had to tell it to shut down again. It always shut down on the second try.I did install an ATI graphics card recently, could that have something to do with it?Like I said it has only happened a few times so it's not that big of a deal, just kind of annoying. Anyone dealt with this before?
