Unable To Create New Partion On Unallocated Space
May 16, 2007
I have installed Windows XP Profressional on a hard disk of 80GB. The partitions i had made was, C and D drive each of 20 and 60 GB respectively. Later I installed linux over the 60GB space of which i wanted to allocate only 20GB to linux. The 40GB had to be assigned unallocated while installing linux partition. Now I am not able to use the 40GB. In windows, Disk Management I can see the unallocated space of 40GB but of no use. If I right click on the unallocated space on disk management, the New Partition is not highlighted. Would you please tell me how I can use this unalloacted space of 40GB

I just replaced the motherboard in my computer. Before doing so I moved all my files over to an external hard drive. Now that drive is not available to me. I used Disk Management to view it and it said it was Unallocated, did some research and was able to use Partition Magic to make the disk recognizable but now when I try to acces the drive I get the message that the disk is not formatted. How can I get the data off of this drive? I have a lot of information I need.

My daughter recently acquired a computer with XP Pro and it came with 3.0 GB on the C drive and 1.2 GB on the E drive. It also was in FAT 32 on both partitions. Using the disk management tool I converted all the files to NTFS, so far so good. The C drive was down to 500 MB free and all the space on E drive free. Using the disk management tool I was able to delete the partition for E drive assuming the unused space would go to the C drive. I now have 1.2 GB of unallocated space that I can't get into C drive. I downloaded Partition Manager 6.0 but it couldn't get the space over either.

I bought a Seagate 169GB Barracuda Hard drive and set about partitioning it with Partition Magic. Initially I was being advised via phone by a friend in a neighbouring country. I put the Seagate as the Master and my previous Master as the slave. (a Maxtor 30 gb hard drive partitioned into 3. IE ..2 x 4GB and one 22gb partitions.......these were configured C (4gb) had the OS Win 98 SE on it ...E (4GB) was a back up? and F (22gb) was for video files mp3,s etc) I put Partition Magic on C and proceeded to follow directions. To cut a long story short. I got the Seagate successfully formatted.
BUT
I have done something wrong. What happened was the E and F partitions on the Maxtor combined and showed up as unallocated space on Partition magic and Free Space on XP,s Disk management...Naturally I removed it till I got some advice on what to do.... I have since tryed three disk recovery programs and had a certain amount of success with one program .....I note however that from memory all the recovered files /folders are from the 22gb partition and none from the 4gb partition that combined with it.... I still have some options to try but as a beginner I thought it best to see if anybody in the forum with experience in this field could give me their advice so that I can hopefully recover as much as I can..

I just installed XP on a new 106GB HD. Somehow I created a primary partition of 7.81GB letter I. That left me 141.23 GB of unallocated disk space. I've already installed my OS and most of my software and other peripherals. That's obviously used most of the 8GB of the primary. The unallocated part of the drive isn't assigned a drive letter so I'm hoping that helps me. I don't need a partition or if I have to have one a small one is fine. I thought the 8GB would be good for the OS with some extra, but I'm real concerned about all that unused space. I did a google and did learn about right clicking on the unallocated side and selecting new partition and taking it from there. I was just a little concerned about making a 2nd mistake. A little frazzled as this is all within 3 hours.

how to expand the disk space that I have. The primary C drive has the OS on it and it is only about 14GB, and my entire disk is about 50GB, the unallocated space is about 34 GB. I have tried to expand the primary partition unsuccessfully. Do I have to reload the entire OS ? I do not have the origional disk to reload the OS. It is a sony PCG-CRT160 computer with 500 mb ram and approximately a 50 GB primary drive that was partitioned when I got it.

I tried to create a shortcut of an email internet link onto my desktop and all I got was a small rectangular white box. Try as I might, I could not remove it. The box is adjustable and can be made to cover the entire desktop area behind the icons but over the current desktop theme. In my attempts to delete it I have ended up with a white box about an inch wide from the top to the bottom on the left side of the screen. I cannot reduce the size any further but as I said, I can drag the right margin all the way across the entire screen.

I have my Windows format disc and I want to create another partition with it. I tried to create one, but it said something like "You have no more space to create another partition because you used up all your space on your Windows primary partition". See, when I reformatted my computer a while back I just created 1 partition for Windows and applied all the space onto that partition.
If there is a way I could remove some space off of my Windows primary partition and create another partition with the space I removed. I want to do this so I can put general things in my other partition such as documents, music, etc. and just leave the other partition for Windows and programs.

My friend and I took both of our old computer and combine them so we could have a small end gaming computer. Previously on the Hardrive was installed Windows 98 but we reformatted the Harddrive and are trying to put Windows Xp on it. We went through the setup with a series of from my HP System Recovery CD's (7 Disc's). Which installs Window's Xp, we went through all 7 CD's and at the very last CD when the installation was about complete it says "Unable to locate/create user partition." I have no idea what this means...and everytime we boot up the computer it just trys to do the Hp System Restore again but only goes as far as the unable to locate/create user partition.I'm not real sure what I should do...or how I can get out of it.but if theres anyway possible just to reformat again since I can't really get out of it can you please tell me how!

I recently found out that a pirated copy of windows was installed on my machine so I went and bought a new copy of XP to install and get my maching running right.
My hardrive has 2 partitions. One for windows and the other for my files. My problem is that I go through the steps to do the reinstall and I get to the part to delete the partition where XP is located. As soon as I hit delete the computer immediately cuts off. I have tried it several times with the same result.
It never even asks to confirm the delete. It just shuts down like the computer was unplugged a;; pf a sudden.

Like many PC owners, I am running low on disk space. My once seemingly massive hard drive capacity of 185gb is now reduced to around 18gb, which has now prompted me to have a serious clear out.
Problem is, I honestly can't work out where all the used space has gone!
O.K. so, I have trawled through My Documents and held my mouse over all the folders that are likely to contain the most files - like, for instance, My Music, which shows at around 30gb, or, My Pictures, which has a filesize of approx. 20gb.
I have also looked at all the other folders in My Documents, none of which seem to exceed a few dozen, or a few hundred megabytes.
I have also looked at my installed software to see if any programs are swallowing up excessive space. But again, none seem to individually exceed more than a few hundred megabytes, at most.
So, were has all the rest of my missing 100gb gone?
My question is simple.
Is tere any easy and fast way to determine exactly what proportion of the HDD is taken up by what software?
Is there a software program available (preferably freeware) that will scan the drive and tell me exactly whats taking up space, and to what degree?
I have tried a few programs that say they will do exactly this, but after a scan all they seem to display is a pie chart showing whole sections lumped together, such as My Documents - total filesize 40gb etc. But this isn't really that helpful. It needs to be more thorough and broken-down than that.
For all I know, there may be a huge amount of space occupied by some long-since archieved files, of which I am totally oblivious. But, with the average PC holding millions of such files, how could I ever locate the possible cause unless I have software to do it for me?

If you have low disk space in your drives, then you may get annoying pop-up messages from Windows that you are low on disk space. This can get extremely annoying at times, to turn off low disk space notification follow these steps:Start regedit. (If you are unfamiliar with regedit, please refer to this FAQ)2. Navigate to:HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesExplorer3. Create a new DWORD value and name it NoLowDiskSpaceChecks4. Right-click on this newly created value and click on Modify5.

I create a new Restore Point each month as I start my monthly maintenance sequence and also SpyBot seems to create one. I see by the Restore Point calendar that there seems to be a Restore Point for each day in October. I'm curious as to what process is creating these Restore Points but mainly I'm wondering how to delete some (most) of them. Aren't they consuming a humongous ammount of disk space?

Hello everyone. I am currently using Windows XP SP2 on a Thinkpad T43 laptop. My main partition which houses windows xp is 34 GB total size. When I highlight the C: drive in "My Computer", it tells me that I have 10GB of free space (therefore I'm using 24GB). When, however, I double click on C: and go into that folder, select all (and yes, I have enabled viewing hidden files/folders), right-click and choose properties, I am then told that C: only contains 15GB of files/folders. Where is this missing 5GB?

I've noticed sometimes that the Free Space on my harddrives won't reflect changes I've made. For example, on my 28.6gb F: drive, I had about 586mb free. I just deleted a video file of about 700 mb, so it should be up to about 1.2 gb. Oddly enough, its still at 586mb.
