Windows XP Pro has a great program called Group Policy Editor that allows system administrators to modify the settings to a great number of windows features. TO start the program up follow the directions below. 1. Open the start menu and click Run2. Type gpedit.msc3. The Group Policy MMC appears4. Click through the different nodes of the tree to see all the hidden features of Windows XP that you can edit without touching the registry.Examples: Changing IE displays

I still cant get it to work. Do you have anymore Ideas. NOTE: in the
Enviormental Variables there was no PATH string. Only a PATHEXT one. I did
not touch this one. I added a PATH string with the following line
%SystemRoot%system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%system32WBEM which I believe
is correct. Still no MMC or Group policy editor.
The MMC still gives me the same error. I still cant get into the group policy editor or MMC. I tried yours and wesleys Ideas.

My company has implemented a group policy that locks Windows after 15 minutes of inactivity. However, i have a system that I only use for monitoriing and I hate having to continue to unlock it. Does anyone know of a way to have a phantom task take place that makes the system think its not idle?

I am trying to link to a printer in my home network, but I do not have access rights to the host computer. I have tried turning off the firewall, editing the registry using "DiableGPO", and various other unsuccessful attempts. The machine I am trying to connect from is a laptop using Windows Vista, and the host computer is a Gateway desktop with Windows XP SP2. The "gpedit.msc" file is not found on the host computer.

I have a home machine, running XP PRO, SP2. I am attempting to set up a small home network for the files transfer wizard and for internet usage. Internet usage was a snap, but I am having issues transferring my old files due to the Windows Firewall being controlled by a Group Policy. I have tried running gpedit and it is not recognized. I have no group policies that I have ever installed, and this is the first time that an ethernet card has ever been installed on this machine. Again, until now, I have not ever even heard of a group policy, let alone created one. It's driving me batty. I have searched all over for a solution, including Microsoft, but to no avail. Can anyone please help me?

I have Windows XP Pro, SP2.
In Windows 98 I knew the name of the file that was the Policy Editor but I've searched and thought and I can't come up with the name of the file that is the Policy Editor or Group Policy Editor in XP. I know there is one because in Tweak UI, you can go into About>Policy>Run Group Policy Editor. And it runs.

Ive recently had this problem with this vundo strain of trojans and tis located in my system volume information folder.. So i did a little researching and figured out that no virus remover will be able to remove it since windows wouldn't allow me to delete or remove it in the first place. Thus the alternate method being the turning off of the system restore function and thereby deleting all system restore points. Although i came across a roadblock in that even though i am the administrator on my computer i am unable to check or uncheck the turn of system restore option in the system restore tab in the properties of My Computer.

My OS is Windows XP Proffessional Version 2002 (Service Pack 1), now recently I had to turn off System Restore to get rid of a pesky trojan horse virus (I did successfully). The problem now is I can't turn it back "on". I've gone to the troubleshooting pages and used every method and I get the same error messages
"Could not start System Restore Service on Local Computer"
"Error 5: Access is Denied"
"System Restore cannot protect your computer right now, restart and try again"

Okay so I usually leave my computer on all the time. I went to bed and when I got up it was off and couldn't get it to turn on. So I assumed it might be the power supply so I went and bought a new one from stamples. He turned on for maybe 5 seconds then turned off. so I took it back thinking maybe I didn't have enough watts. The higher watts didn't doanything. I am lost without my computer can anyone help? I have Win XP..Could it be the fan? Even though the fan worked when i plugged in first PS...Second didnt do anything. Could it be something to do with motherboard?

Installed Norton Internet Security 2005 and now, whenever I try and do a system restore it says "System restore encountered a problem and has to close". It does this all the time, even in safe mode. Symantec has mentioned that I should turn off NIS2005 and try system restore. If it then works it is a Microsoft issue. I have been onto the Microsoft websites and they do not mention how to repair or reinstall system restore

I recently downloaded some drivers as I was trying to install a new printer who's software would'nt load. This did'nt solve the problem. I decided to get a printer that I had had before, Brother DCP-110C as I knew this had worked well. I tried to install yesterday (28th July) but could'nt and my PC keeps switching itself off near the end of the installation. I then thought I would use System restore to go back to a happier time when I had the first Brother printer. previous saved point wont let me to restore

I was messing around with CCleaner and deleted something to do with an old version of McAfee (which isn't even on my computer anymore) from the registry. Yes, it was stupid to mess with the registry I guess because I failed to make the backup and now my computer won't boot. I get the blue screen that says there was an error 0x0000008e, or something like that.
I have tried using F8 and choosing the last known good configuration but it doesn't work. Also, I can boot into safe mode and I tried running a system restore but after it finished and I rebooted, it said that I couldn't restore from that point.I haven't really tried another restore because I am a little afraid to do anything. I don't want to risk losing access in safe mode because I need to be able to back up some of my files if in case I have to do a reformat.

My computer had a turn yesterday and kept giving me the blue screen error on start-up, so using my windows disk I managed to run chkdsk. So I can get on now, but certain things won't run, like Media Centre, Firefox has forgotten my settings and also my iriver doesn't get acknowledged when I plug it into a USB port.So I am trying to run System restore to go back a couple of days.I can get into restore, and go through everything up to the point where you click 'next' in order to restore it.I click on next but nothing happens, it just stays there.

I am unable to acess any of my or XP's restore points. When I went to restore to an earlier date. All appeared to be going as it should. However, when I got to my profile a message window came up that said unable to restore to (chosen date/time) etc. I chose 3 other restore points over the last month, thinking it might be some recent problem, still a no go. Any help would be greatly appreciated? Is there a utility to use to check and see if there is something corrupted?
