I just tried to install a new hard drive into a dell dimension 8100. It appears the motherboard is shot and so I am just going to use this new hard drive for storagew and I just want to remove XP off of it. Is it best to FDISK and if so how do I do that on XP? Is it the same as on the other operating systems or is there a better way?

Installed a brand new hard drive and still no luck just says can not locate a hard drive to install windows on, done a check in the bios on the hard drive and it says it's fine but can not see it on the fresh install.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to bring my husband's older Dell 8100 P4 desktop back to life. It was an old ME system initially. I've done the following:Replaced the motherboard and ide cables New CMOS battery Flashed BIOS Replaced and upgraded the memory Reformatted the harddrive (using another system) and loaded Win XP Pro I've used this same harddrive (with XP Pro) sucessfully on another Dell so I know there is nothing wrong with the boot files. But when I install it in the broke Dell...no joy.
It hangs in the "Windows can not start normally" pick Safe Mode, Last Known Good Config...etc loop. None of the options work and it flashes a quick BSOD dump error (too fast for me to see) and then back through the loop.The BIOS recognizes all the drives, the memory, processor, etc.I also tried to boot with alot of the extra hardware removed (removed NIC, sound card, modem, un-hooked optical drives, etc) --- still same no-boot loop.
Replaced old wd 160gig serial ATA HD with WD5000AAKS sata HD on Dell Dimension 4600. When trying to install XP, get error: filei386halaacpi.dll could not be loaded. The error code is 7.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI was running XP professional but got hacked or a virus and did a complete hard drive wipe out and then installed XP home. Now it does not find, or is having a conflict with, my ethernet controller, audio device, system management bus and VGA. I can probably download updated drivers for the other things if I can get it to load a driver for the ethernet, but since I can't, I am pretty well screwed. I would appreciate any help from anyone who is at all familiar with the Dell Dimension 2400.

I have a like new IBM drive installed, the bios recognizes it, however, I cannot get the computer to re-install the cd that i have from dell to reinstall xp. i have the boot sequence to start with the cd, however all I get is press f1 to try again, for f2 for setup.

The windows xp installed just fine on my pc but the problem I've run into is the drivers, the disk that came with it wouldn't work so I went to dell's website put in my service tag and downloaded all the drivers that it says my pc needs. everything installed ok except for my broadcom, which is not allowing internet, my warranty on this computer is out so I can't get any advise from them without paying a fee even though I bought the hard drive from them, and the computer! Just hoping I could get some help, and wondering if I have to install vista for everything to work right.

disc is very different as it wants to know what partition you want to put it on. There was no other choices.So I believe that we destroyed the restore partition without knowing it had one.If I buy a Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition OEM Version will it work to solve this problem? TigerDirect sells a copy. I need the full disc and not an upgrade. But will we have drivers problems. He does have other disc with his Dell which one says its for drivers but in reality its just disc of Docs. I reformatted the hard drive and tried to install XP home Edition for my Latitude D600, but keep getting different error messages, I thought it was a faulty operating system disk, but I've tried three different disks.This is not the first time I've reformatted desktops and laptops.

Stays on when plug pulled short time, less than a minute, goes off. When plugged in, fan starts, standby light lights, even before power button is pressed. Removed CMOS battery, waited five minutes, SB light still on. (Dell online says don't change PCI card while light is on.) The computer is my college G-daughter's; I'd like to get it fixed and back to her ASAP.

I purchased a faster used Dell Dimension 8400 3.6ghz hyperthreading 3gb RAM with XP Pro on it.My question is simple. My Dimension 2400 has an IDE hard drive and the 8400 has SATA. Rather than spend days re-installing and tweaking all of the programs on the 8400 I tried the following. I used Acronis Easy Migrate 7 to Image the IDE hard drive to the SATA hard drive and installed it into the 8400. It would not boot, I tried a repair install, then while booting I get a blue screen stop Error 0x0000007B. What do I have to do to fix this so it will boot?

A small box pops up in my face and it says . . . windows must now shut down because the RPC service terminated. System shutdown initiated by NT/AUTHORITY then it counts down 60 sec and shuts off my computer. I have no control when it does this, i cannot X it out or make it stop. Very annoying. Sometimes it goes for hours and does not do anything, sometimes it will do it 3 times in 30 min. I have scanned for virus' and it comes up clear.

I am looking to upgrade the memory on my Dell Dimension 2400 to at least 512 mb. I have heard that you have to purchase a specific kind of ram (dell certified?) and that it won't just use any kind of brand. Is this true? If so, can someone point me in the right direction.I know that it must be DDR PC2700/333 but I'm unclear as to which brand to buy.I spoke with Dell and hung up unclear (she spoke very poor english) so really got nowhere.

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 desktop running WinXP Home however It won't boot to the hard drive. I replaced the drive with a known working one and it still doesn't boot, says Diskette Drive 0 Not Found, however I figured that was referring to the floppy drive. Tried switching the ide cables around and that didn't work either. The power supply is working, as well as all of the fans. Its running a 1700mh processor. Cd-Rom works fine, and I can boot to a CD, I can browse the files if I boot to Knoppix, however it simply won't boot to the Hard Drive. I ran FixMbR and FixBoot in the recovery console, to no avail. Bios is configured properly, and I haven't touched the jumpers. Just to be sure I tried the hard drive in another system, and it wouldn't boot in that one either. Might be the mother board?
