Strange Hanging With System Log Error
Nov 5, 2006
PC has recently started hanging in a particularly strange way. Most commonly, the screen blinks to black, then comes back, and the PC is frozen not even Num Lock will turn off. Sometimes however, it doesn't do the blink and just stops. This seems completely random, and isn't to do with any particular software that's running at the time. The only evidence is this entry in the Event Viewer - System Log: The browser service has failed to retrieve the backup list too many times on transport DeviceNetBT_Tcpip_{FF038570-7316-4F6A-8817-2B5B9C597E73}. The backup browser is stopping. And The browser was unable to retrieve a list of servers from the browser master \H_LPTP1 on the network DeviceNetBT_Tcpip_{FF038570-7316-4F6A-8817-2B5B9C597E73}. The data is the error code. H_LPTP1 is my laptop, usually on the network, but it isn't even switched on.

I have three XP computers (described in my profile). On one SP3 installed fine right away. On the newest one, after much trouble and with the help of others, I got everything to update and download:On my system with XP Home, I get the following error message when I go to the update site and SP downloads fine but fails to install and gives the same error message as follows: "The file c:windowssystem32smss.exe is open or in use by another application. Close all other applications and then click retry."No other applications are ever running when this occurs and I am baffled by it. Anyone got any ideas how to fix this?

I have an intermittent problem that causes a left click on my mouse to highlight not only the item I'm trying to select but everything below the selected item. For instance, clicking on a link on a web page causes the whole page below the link to become selected as if I was selecting the whole area. This happens across all programs when it happens including Explorer, Outlook, or anything where a selection can be made which leads me to believe it is an XP problem. The only way to resolve the problem is to reboot. I'm running XP Pro SP2 on a 3.4 P4 with 1 Gig of memory. This is a fresh install of XP on a new SATA drive but the problem occurred before this install as well. I thought the new install would cure it.

Okay first I'm going to have to give a little background on what this problem may have to do with. A couple months ago this computer I am using was was infected with a dialer that I could not get rid of for the life of me. I asked for help on this forum, and all help given, was useful but could not get rid of the dialer permenantly. Ever everytime I would wipe the dialer from my computer (and by "wipe" I mean, I would fix it in spybot, Hijackthis, then delete it fromt the windows/system32 folder, and delete it from all TEMP folder, all in safe mode.) the dialer would return 6 hours to 2 days later. $teve recommended the Idea of making a Dummy Prvdi.exe file. but this didn't work because it would just be overwritten with the real file. I then decided to just live with it, but I couldn't take it anymore. So I came up with the Idea of make the Dummy File Read-only so it cannot be overwritten, and it worked. right now I have dummy files of Prvdi.exe and Tibs3.exe in my windows/system32 folder, but ever since I created those files, this strange phenomenon would occur:
after booting up my computer, when I open up Mozilla firefox 1.0, I will get a Barrage of error messages, LITERALLY a barrage! I'm talking 2 or 3 alerts per second, and they won't stop coming. the only way I can stop the stream of alerts is to stop the explore.exe process in the windows task manager, then run explore.exe again.

I did a clean install of Xp Home edition with SP2 and current updates and applications. There were no problems until I went to use the DVD playback feature in Nero Suite (Nero Showtime) the program had sound only, no video and after a few minutes it froze. The event log said ''Win XP error hanging App''. Why is this happening?? Is it another one of those Unknown error things with windows Xp?

I have a user who is getting a blue screen that references the following stop codes;
0x000000C2
0x00000000
0x80000000
I looked around but it seemed like a lot of people's issues were resolved by replacing the memory. So here is what I did;
The laptop is an HP 6710b;
- Completely replaced the memory - BSoD still happens
- CHKDSK /F - BSoD still happens
- Latest patches removed - BSoD still happens
- take hard drive out and put into a different, identical 6710b - problem resolved.
| BIOS version is the same on both laptops

Bought a Dell laptop with Windows XP for college last semester. She's had it for about six months now and earlier today upon startup it hung for a very long time (about 20 minutes). She rebooted it to the same results. I tried doing the only thing I knew how which was booting it in safe mode, which gave me a brief flash of a blue screen before restarting. I went to safe mode again so I could make out what the error message was before the computer restarted itself and I saw that it said KERNEL_INPAGE_DATA_ERROR. There's an error number at the bottom, but the screen flashes by so fast that I can't make it out. Anyway, it's been a few hours and startup is still hanging. I have tried booting it in the last good settings mode and nothing seems to work. I'm not very PC savvy (yes, I am a mac user :P) and my limited knowledge doesn't really help in this situation. I asked her if she had deleted any files which might cause a startup problem and she said that she hadn't. She uses the computer strictly for her iPod, printing papers, and burning the occasional CD. There are a few harmless games which have been downloaded for a long time now, but I don't think that she recently installed any software that could cause a kernel inpage data error, whatever that is. Her most recent piece of installed software is for her new phone, but even that was a week ago. When this problem started, the laptop wasn't very hot so I don't think that would be a problem either.

After buying and installing the new hardware i'm now having some issues. Everything was fine for weeks but now sometimes i get an error message. This is the 2nd time this has happened. Everything starts up as per normal but once it comes to the Windows screens (desktop) i get a blue screen with the error message: So i pretty much need to restart the pc and it goes back to normal. All hardware and software has been checked time and time again. All seems to be ok. Bar the dvd drive. The dvd drive doesn't let me access it, however if i put a dvd, audio or data cd in then autoplay takes over and asks if i want to play it or whatever. But if i want to open it by double clicking or selecting open after right-clicking then it doesn't allow it. I get the error message: d: not accssible. Incorrect function.

I am currently running XP on my system. About three days ago, my system suddenly started taking longer to boot. The extra boot time comes in the form of a black screen with a flashing cursor in the top left, where my system does not appear to be doing anything. This screen appears immediately before the Windows XP loading screen. I have tried Tweak XP utilities to try and speed up my startup. Failing that, I tried a system restore to a few days prior to this strange occurrance. Every time I try to run system restore, however, I am confronted with an error upon startup that tells me that system restore was unsuccessful. I have tried a variety of system restore dates, and all have been unsuccessful. I have tried sweeps with Spysweeper and Norton, and neither have brought any more insight into this problem.

I had this posted in a previous thread about my RAM problems (which I fixed by getting better quality RAM ), but very frequently my system will hang for about 2 seconds. This all occurred after my laptop slid off my bed and dropped about 2 feet onto it's back-bone. I am still able to move the mouse while the system hangs. Now, I know this is not a memory related problem as I just installed 2 GB of Crucial DDR2 PC-5300 RAM (which are AMAZING!). A lot of you will try to suggest a virus or spy-ware scan, but seeing as how it happened right after I dropped the damn thing, I don't think the problem is software related. I also know that it's hard to diagnose hardware problems over the internet, but can any of you give me some tips? I'm honestly thinking of just bringing the thing into BestBuy to get warranty service on it. Hopefully it's something too damaged for them to deem it worth it to fix and they will have to give me a new laptop.

I had to switch my pc off before shutting down properly earlier today. Each time I attempt to boot, I get the message windows did not start properly etc. and I am given a choice of whether to start in safe mode, last known setting that worked, or normally, etc. When attempting to start normally, I get the windows xp splash screen whith the progress bar for a few seconds, then at the point it would normally switch to the blue password prompt, the screen goes black. No error message, no cursor, no nothing. The system just hangs. It does exactly the same when I try 'last known settings that worked'. On trying in safe mode, the list of drivers it is attempting to load comes up, fills the screen, and then just stays like that.

I have a Win2000 network and now have around 20 new XP Pro machines on it.Every user has at least one drive mapped to one of our servers to store files Every so often, for no reason that I have figured out, when trying to access a mapped drive it hangs up and you are asked for a username and password.This happens to me with my perminatly mapped drives and new ones I make on the fly. No username or password seems to work, and the easiest way to get it to work correctly is to reboot. This only happens with the XP machines.

I am running Win XP-SP2. I wiped my hard drive due to irresolvable software conflicts. I reinstalled XP-SP2, Office, Norton, the printer and scanner and my digital camera software package. All were updated and working perfectly until Sunday. I booted up the machine only to get a warning that says One of your disks may have errors let the computer reboot itself (which it will do repeatedly, stuck in a reboot loop) or you can hit any key to ignore this warning. You have only ten seconds to read all this and make a decision.
Once the computer boots up, everything seems to work as normal except for system restore. I tried to restore to the day after I reformatted and installed everything and all I get is an error saying Cannot restore to that point, please choose another point to restore tooor something to that effect.

i had XP 2008 virus/spyware, which I think I managed to get rid of with Malwarebytes' Anti Malware and System Mechanic 7. Now I have a new problem. After receiving a recent download from microsoft, upon restarting, I get the blue screen of death with this message; STOP: C000021a (Fatal System Error) The Windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000005 (0x00000000 0x00000000)
I can't get anywhere into Windows, I've done F2, F8, F12, everything I could think of without risking more damage. I've booted from the system mechanic CD with the Hard Drive recovery, and while it said it found and fixed a problem, it didn't fix this one.

What could cause that? then a box kept coming up asking what connection I wanted to use and if I pressed one, it would dial up and thank God, in a way..an error message came up. I supposed I should never have entereded anything in that box.

This rather novice computer user is looking for a checklist of steps to diagnose an issue with XP hanging up on boot started last night.Current system is 3 1/2+ years old - Graphics card upgraded 2 years ago - running XP SP3 for games and email.Booting computer - starts up no problem - on XP screen with dots moving across it freezes after about 10 seconds.On restart I tried the restart from Last Known Good Configuration - same hang up same dot location.I can boot into Save Mode and it comes up. I ran CC Cleaner again including registry. Actually I may have run CC Cleaner before the hand up booting.An links on a step by step process I can follow so as not to make a problem any bigger would be helpful.

I was on my computer, listening to music, and then all of a sudden, my sound just stopped. Totally. Checked the volume control and everything. I was obviously curious as to why, so for some reason, I opened up the task manager to take a look at what was running. It was then that I saw "loader.exe" and "iexplore.exe" running. I didn't have Internet Explorer open, and I've never seen loader.exe before. Naturally, I googled it and was informed that it was some sort of spyware/malware. I ran MalwareBytes-AntiMalware and the results came back clean. Still, I searched for "loader.exe" on my computer and deleted it, and its prefetch file. The EXE was in a temp folder.After doing all of that, I decided to reboot to see if my sound will come back. Much to my dismay, not only did my sound not come back, Windows XP ITSELF did not come back either. My computer restarts and does the whole Asus thing it does at the beginning, and then the screen goes black. I never end up at the boot screen.
