Not Having Admin/user Abilities - Access Denied?
May 7, 2007
I have a quick question regarding the admin. tools on the windows XP system. There are three accounts on my computer, one for myself, my brother, and my family. My brother made it so that my account has no admin/user abilities whatsoever, and when I try to change it, it gives me the error. This happens when I try to download things as well, and it's very irritating. Is there ANY way to get around this? No, I cannot simply go on my brother's account and change it because my brother's acct has a pw. Is there any other way?

We have our own printer driver which basically prints any document to our application (just like Adobe). Our installer creates a named printer port in HKEY_LOACL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTPorts (eg. OurPort). We stop the spooler service and then start it too to refresh the list of ports.
Then we create the printer by running this command from within installer.
rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /if /b "Our Printer Name" /f "Path of the inf file" /r "OurPort" /m "Printer driver name" /Z
Once all this is done, we try printing any document to this printer we created and it does print in our application. But this happens only when the logged on user is either admin or a power user.
When we try to login with a local user, and he tries to print a document to our application via our printer, it fails. We can see the document in the printing queue but it shows error-printing.

Using Windows XP Home, I deleted an old user folder (JAMES), and created a new one reassigning myself as the administrator. Upon deleting, I clicked on 'Keep Files', expecting a shortcut to be available on my new desktop. There is no shortcut.
If I click on Explore, then the old User file (JAMES) I get the following error message: "C:Documents and SettingsJAMES is not accessible. Access is Denied."
If I right click the folder, and click on 'Sharing and Security', it tells me to drag the folder to the .Shared Documents' folder, as I get an error message: "Cannot create or replace JAMES: Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use."
In addition, any changes I make to the Properties tab (un-click 'read only', click 'Share this folder') do not get saved after I click on 'Apply'. I cannot find any other Securities tab other than th 'Sharing' tab available on XP Home edition.

Hopefully I can explain my situation without dragging it out to long, but it is involved. The problem is with my wife computer which is an Emachine, Model T3265, running Win XP, Home Edition and IE 7.0.The last time my wife was on the computer was the evening of Aug 14, at which time she had been playing the card game Spider Solitaire. I am also listed as a user but only to keep it running for my wife. When she tried to use the computer the next day, Aug 15 she kept getting the message Windows can not access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access the item.Having come up with the same results as my wife, here is what I have been able to determine.
Be it from the Start Menu, Desk Top or Program Folder, the end result is the above .message. .It didn't matter whose account I was in, mine or my wife, or if I tried to open an executable file or program directly or with a shortcut, the results were the same. However I did find a couple of things that were quite odd. The items stored in the task bar at the bottom right side of the task bar could be opened, but only from here..These programs consisted of the Virus Program, Trend Microsoft Pecillin, messenger program and the like. I also found that if I opened Documents and Settings and then opened either my wife or my personal folder and then went to Favorites I was able to access the internet. I could not do is run Restore from system tools and when I tried use the run function in the start menu I got a pop up window which said Windows can not create a shortcut here. Do you want a shortcut placed on the desktop.Short of doing a full format and re-installation can you tell me what has happened and how to fix it?

a freind of mine has asked me to take a look ather broken laptop. It will boot up to windows but there is no Windows bar at the bottom and it totally screwed as you cannot access anything at all. I decided to take out the hard drive and insert it into a External Caddy with the intention of getting the data off and re-installing windows xp. when i noticed that when attached to my machine came up with lots of virus error? i have managed to get to her profile and i can see the contents of the profile but cannot copy or open due to "Access Denined"
My thoughts were that it is an Ownership issue i have changed the owner of that folder ticked the box to aplly with the subfolders but still cannot get access to the files? also i can only get a security tab (In properties)with her profile folder and not any subfolders within? repeated this process many times taking care not to get anything wrong with taking ownership. however, i cannot see this being any other issue than an ownership issue?

Does one group take precedence over the other. I had a situation where the user's accoutn was in both groups but when trying to install software,it appeared as if he did not have enough privileges. One of my technicians signed in as administrator and was able to install the software without a problem. When he signed in as the user who was in both Power Users and Admins, he said the install did not work. So the general question is how does Windows decide how to apply group membership roles.

Using XP sp2, trying to clear out some useless files on an external drive, no matter how many files I deleted it didn't make much change in space recovered then I checked the size of Windows Live One backup file,50 gig,(wow) that's 60% of the total drive space, while trying to delete it,I get the message "cannot delete DO_NOT_DELETE.mediaID: access denied" Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that file is not currently in use.

I did a terrible mistake today. Typically I install XP in C drive and keep My Documents folder in D drive. All of my hard disk drives (except the linux partitions) are NTFS. I encrypted the My Documents folder and all of its files and subfolders.Today I reinstalled XP in the C drive, after a quick format on it. I was unaware of the fact that what might be happened to My Documents folder. Now I can only view the files and folders inside My Documents folder. Neither I open any file, nor I decrypt those files. Windows is saying access denied.

I recently recovered from a nasty virus on my laptop that 'slipped through' Norton AV.I pulled the hard drive and put in a USB enclosure kit and cleaned it with updated Norton and Malwarebytes. I also used UBCD4WIN Boot CD to regain access to the system which corrupted all of the user accounts (userinit.exe)I re-installed and booted the machine in safe mode and after quite a bit of work was able to log in as administrator While there I ran a few reg. c
leanup programs and created a new user with admin rights from Control Panel. My old personal log-in profile (also with administrator rights) still doesn't work. I also can not access these user's files in docs. & sett. while logged on as administrator. I know that they are there ( a lot of docs.) because I can see them when the AV software is scanning the folder(s).Is there a way to retreive these files?

Yesterday I started up the desktop PC (a Dell Dimension 8400 Series), to find that a password had spontaneously appeared on the sole User account.I attempted a Safe Mode start to try and log in as the Admin (also previously unpassworded), in order to reset the User password, only to be faced with another password that hadn't been there previously.I have never put any passwords on either the User or Admin accounts, and these new passwords have seemingly come out of nowhere.

I made a HUGE mistake today. I was configuring 2 'puters at a time & accidently made the only admin account into a limited account. At first, I swear, I remember seeing the at least one other account that was an admin but I guess not. The login screen is a bit wierd as well. Instead of it being the new xp screen with the users' icon it has the old 2000 version with the window asking for the username & password. I tried to enter the UN in that I thought I remember seeing & a variety of possible passwords but nada.
1. is it possible to reverse the limited restrictions on the formerly admin account without any other admin account. This seems unlikely but I guess there has to be a way, right? (GOD!, I hioe there is a way!)
2. If there really is another admin account (it seems unlikely that windows would allow the only account to be changed to limited access) then how can I recoup the forgotten password. I didnt make a passwords disks.

I logged into my admin user account today and suddenly the admin profile has been wiped out. I'm guessing that XP uses a similar method as is done on unix in terms of user profiles, ie a flat file to hold user preferences and what not.In any case I had all these settings for the admin account for things such as mouse, outlook express, startup programs etc. Now when I log into the account it's like I just created it for the first time. Outlook express is no longer set up which is really annoying because I'm worried now that I might lose all my emails and address book if I set it up again ( you know with the pop server settings and stuff)Any thoughts on this? How can I get my admin "profile" back. Where the hell did it go. I'm assuming it's a file somewhere and for some reason the user account program can no longer find it and assumes a new account has been created.

In attempting to install a router I inadvertently setup a confusing array of user/administrator accounts which leaves me unable to log in as administrator. Two things 1) My description of the problem leaves people confused and unable to help. 2) Given that people can't really know what my intent is in trying to log in as admin. there are obvious ethical issues involved. It's understandable. I want all those user accounts wiped out so I can just start up without logging in as I did before. Will re-installing Windows do that?

I used Window's XP's System Recovery tool to do a system recovery. It was NOT a full system recovery so my old files are in tact. However, the new system admin, Owner, cannot access files from the old system admin. The folders for all of the other users on the computer found in Documents and Settings are accessible. Just not the old admin, that folder gives a 'permission denied' error

I'm running xp sp2 on my laptop. I was having trouble getting Inet Explorer 7 to run ( I use Mozilla) so I created a new user account to see if it would work there. . I gave it admin privileges and a password. Now, my other admin account is gone and I can't access any admin files from my new account. I reviewed the forums and found this is a common problem but I couldn't find any resolution for my specific problem. Please help! I would hate to erase my hardrive and re-install windows! I have too many files that I'd hate to lose.

I have a similar issue to what was already stated. i had two accounts on my computer... one mine the admin and second a guest account my house mates. some how with out realising what an idiot i was i managed to change my profile from admin to normal user. However this is where things get a little different that above cause no longer is my profile shown on the computer. When i log on it doesnt give the option to even pick between the two account it only shows the guest account. Secondly it doesnt show it in normal xp fashion but shows it with a grey security box (such as work profile) with only my guest account name present. I have tried to manually type other user name and password in but it doesnt recognise it.
i can log in with the guest account but cant change anythign cause it isnt admin. it also doestn give the otpion anymore that when logging off to swtich user. it just turns off. its as though my own profile is no longer present or hidden and i cant find it anymore. I have seen it in the computer management area under users and groups but because im still under the non admin profile cant access it.

I must have clicked on something online before i knew it i had trojan downloaders 'generic 7.rnn' on my system. Avg free version healed most of what it could find which was about 3 threats: autorun.exe, printer.exe and one other.Further scans are revealing nothing now and i've lost all my admin abilities. I go for a basic run command into the control panel e.g 'control access.cpl' and i get a message saying 'this operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer, please contact your system administrator. The control panel has dissappeared too.
