I am really without a clue, the only hardware modification I have done is install two more 512mb sticks of ram. I had two and installed 2 more all same type Kingston ValueRAM 512MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400 (PC 3200). So now I am running 2 gigs of ram. It rebooted and I got the boots screen to choose type of boot.....last good config, ect....I chose normal and it gave me the xp windows screen with the horizontal progress graphic and then it kinda hangs on a black screen for a bit and finally it will give me the user/password window.

I rebooted after a software install and could not get back into Windows. The machine just does a continuous reboot after the XP Splash Screen. Finally got it to give me a corrupted registry file error message. After googling, it seems this has been fairly common occurrence. A simple repair install, right? Well, my OEM version of Windows does not give me a repair option(something else that many people have found with all different versions of Windows) I can get into the Recovery Console but this is not
what I need. When I skip the RC and press F8 at the Licensing Screen I can get to the "Repair Screen" but when I highlight the installation of Windows to repair, THERE IS NO REPAIR OPTION, only a INSTALL option and pressing 'R' does nothing

I have been having a problem with my system. Suddenly, the entire system shuts off and reboots. I have the automatic restarts disabled, and if all things are equal,I should at least be getting a "blue screen of death". So, I think it is NOT a Stop error. Then when I check my Event log, I see it is always caused by Security Center. This Windows XP SP2 feature, for some reason, seems to be shutting me down at its leisure. Is there a setting to prevent this

'Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: vgaoem.fon " { Or it
will say other files are missing or corrupt} It says I can attempt to repair it with the original Setup
CD Rom by selecting "r" at the first screen. I can not do that because I have no original Windows
Setup CD, I have only the Quick Restore CD that came with the computer. Or sometimes when it
tries to reboot it will say "a disk read error occurred" press ctl>alt>delete to restart. But no
matter how many times you try it will not boot.

When I went to start up my computer (HP Pavilion 750n, 768 MB RAM, 1.6 GHz Pentium 4 processor) yesterday, there was no power. I took it to the local repair shop. The tech said it was the power supply again (the second one I've had in 6 months). He replaced it with a non-HP power supply. It boots up and all the programs are functioning, but when I do the START>SHUT DOWN>SHUT DOWN, it just reboots. I did some investigating and found a work around for this (right click on MY COMPUTER>PROPERTIES>ADVANCED tab>STARTUP and RECOVERY SETTINGS>unchecked AUTOMATICALLY RESTART under SYSTEM FAILURE). I'm still concerned about why the icons in the SYSTRAY can't be hidden now.

I went to play Half-Life 2 last night, just as I do any other time. It informed me that there was an upgrade for my ATI Radeon 9550 video card and wouldn't let me proceed without it. Really wanting to play, I went and installed the update. After rebooting after the update, I noticed something. Some applications (i.e. Skype, MSN, etc.) weren't working properly. Then, I started getting random shutdowns.
I was able to boot into Safe Mode and do a System Restore back to before I installed the new driver. This did not solve the problem. So I called ATI, and they instructed me to uninstall the ATI Drivers and reinstall it without Catalyst. So I did, and it worked... For about an hour. My computer then rebooted and now refuses to boot, safe mode, debug mode, normal or otherwise.

here is the problem: when I plug in an USB device, windows will install the driver for the device automaticlly if:
1. the driver comes with the system.
2. the device driver has been installed.
I wanna stop windows installing driver automatically but ask me the location of the driver when I plug in a device every time. How do I do that?

Is there any way in XP to install a device driver manually. I've tried using update driver in the device manager but it tells me I already have the best driver. If I unistall the driver, when I use the add hardware wizard, windows automatically installs its own driver.?

A friend of mine set up my computer for me, and is no longer available to answer this question, so Here it is: When starting up Windows I get past the black-windows XP screen with windows flag, then on the next screen, when the screen background turns blue, I get a "Enter password" dialog box. I simply hit the Enter with no Password, and the PC continues to load up Windows with no further prompt. The PC is running Windows XP Professional Home Edition, is in a single home use enviornment, and it serves only my wife & I. I see no need to limit file accessibility, therefore no need for any password. Did my friend enter me as an Administrator during the system build? If so, do I have to delete the Administrator and Guest account? I want to 'get-rid' of this password screen - it is more annoying than anything else.

I'm running Windows XP home sp2 on a WD Raptor hooked to a Gigabyte 7NNXP mobo inside a Lian Li tower. I have all the latest drivers, BIOS updates and Windows updates. The problem is that when turning off the computer from Windows it continues to run, (Windows shuts down but power light is on and fans are running). At this point I used to be able to turn it off by pressing the power button [Instant off set in BIOS]. Then that stopped working and I tried the four second delay after pressing power button option in BIOS and that is working but I'm afraid something is not right and continuing without isolating the problem will result in broken computer.

I've found that if I perform a straight cold boot, first of the day, my computers window bar continues to cycle. See my question of 8/20. However, if I press "Del" in the initial stage of bootup and leave my computer in the BIOS setup mode for 2-3 minutes and then exit I am able to boot normally. I suspect that I may have a problem with the motherboard or one of the PCI cards having a bad component.

I have hit another wall. Using W2K-Pro I installed VirtualPC 2004-SP1. I then installed DOS 6.22.I began the win3.1 install and at the end of the second disk when it launches win3.1-Setup and asks for a Name and Company the Virtual Machine hangs. No mouse, no blinking cursor.I can right-Alt to shut down the VM. OK, so I though it might be the USB mouse and keyboard so I shut it all down and plugged in a M$oft PS/2 mouse and keyboard. Same problem with the win3.1 install. Not to be beaten, I went to another PC also running W2K-Pro. Exact same issue with win3.1. Not be be beaten again, again I installed VPC-2004 on an XP-Pro, damn me, same again at the end of the win3.1 second diskette. I have tried installing DOS and win3.1 onto a 486 machine and it installs fine so I doubt it is a faulty diskette.

I have been trying to start my computer for some time now but whenever the computer gets to the desktop screen, a ton of programs start popping up and eventually the computer restarts and the cycle continues until I shut the computer off. I am able to do virtually nothing on the computer before it restarts but I am able to see that the computer is running at 100% and has approx 180 applications running when I open the . I want to do a virus scan but cannot and no matter how many of the programs I try to close, it always restarts. Is there any way that I can stop all programs from processing at the start so it may not restart on me?

It is frustrating having every program automatically install to program files, including minor things like audio attachment. I know I'll end up with tons and tons of folders in program files. Beyond that, I can't access program files from the other computers on the network. Is there a good way to reorganize/move files to my C drive in a way that would be efficient and wouldn't require reinstalling every single program in a different place?

Was never able to restart after that. Normal boot shows the windows initial screen, but eventually just restarts, safe mode does the same thing whether it's with network, command line or plain safe mode. Last known good configuration does the same.Needed to use a file so decided to remove the HD and re-install to another PC. I did have access to the file in question but now I'd like to fix the problem.
The other system uses AVG. I started a scan and it detected Cekar.d (A0003977.exe, wdfmgr.exe and initially ntldr.exe), Dropper.Inor (ntdetect.hta, A0003979.hta), PSW.Generic5.ABVW (ctfmona.exe), PSW.OnlineGames.AAFI (ctfmonb.exe), PSW.Generic5.AFYK (ctfmond.exe), PSW.OnlineGames.ZWT (LotusHlp.exe) and some others but for whatever reason the scan stopped. I restarted it and now the AV still finds most of the threats it was seeing before but not Cekar.d. in the ntldr.exe file.

I install Server 2003 Standard SP1 downloaded and installed on a PII 400, 256Mb RAM with IIS, ASP.Net 2.0, SQL server 2000 SP4, Mysql 5, and PHP5, and all without a single hitch...too good to be true. I went ahead and tried on what will be my server PIII600, 512 MB RAM, First try, Server 2003 couldn't find a file when installing, retried and it worked. Downloaded SP1 and when I was extracting it said "file is corrupt", downloaded 4 more times with same result. reformatted and reinstalled 5 more times and cannot get past "file is corrupt" on SP1 and sometimes extracting the .Net 2.0 installer got the same error. I swap all hardware with PC from first try (except RAM, Mobo, CPU, CDROM) with no change. Win98 and XP installed fine on the second PC just can't get server 2003

Now I can't boot up (cold or warm) without using the original disk. Can I just go into setup and change boot settings without re-installing.Is there anything else I should know before I attempt to fix this problem? I am tired of using the disk every time I update something or install new program.

An interesting problem. I have a box here that constantly reboots itself. Firstly I thought it may be a cmos problem, so I drained the cmos by removing the battery. Nope. Then I forced the bios to find hardware (I think it's eecd?). No problem finding hardware, but constant reboot. I thought it may be a hard drive problem so I changed the h/d. Nope, still constantly reboots. I took out the cdrom. Nope. I then low level formatted the h/d (the box worked just fine for this, using a cd with the format program, booting from the cd) tried to install a new o/s rebooting again during the install, after several tries got the o/s in the puter boots to the point of xp starting, then reboot or teases the heck out of me by actually opening xp to the welcome screen - then reboot. The box uses XP, the pwr supply is good and I am at a loss.
