I am a computer science/engineer major and I know somewhat a lot about computers, but this is my first time seeing this blue screen. My computer will start up to the compaq screen then goes to windows xp and then it flashes a blue screen for a split second. I was able to freeze it, but do not know how i did it, but it said something about a cretain system32 file is corrupt. there is a corrupt hive. complete physical memory dump complete. contact tech support or system administrator. right now, I am out of town and i have been reading about it and they say something about using a recovery console. I do not have my XP disk with me. I was wondering could I use anyone's XP disk and how do i fix this problem with no disk or using a XP disk?

I was checking out a website online when a window with the Microsoft Windows Security logo popped up indicating infection with several types of Trojans/viruses. I did not make a note of them but the boxes all had green check marks against the purported trojans/viruses. I believe it instructed me to download something Instead, I immediately shut down my pc, and ran Scans in Safe Mode and also did an online scan with Trendmicro housecall. All the scans showed 0 infections. I am therefore wondering what this was all about as the Security alert had the exact logo as the Microsoft Windows Security.

I am looking for a screensaver of a type like a moving banner across the display. A banner or flag that can have it texture or background customized from artwork that I choose or have made. If I am not clear, I need to have a picture or artwork I have stored or created on my pc move about the screen in screensaver mode. What should I be looking for?

When I try to scroll up or down a page using either the scroll arrows or the mouse roller button, the scroll appears as a "ripple" moving up or down the screen. It slows down the scrolling process intolerably. A similar effect occurs when I scroll right or left. I have sought for solutions using Desktop Properties/Display/Appearance, Folder Options, Control Panel/System, and anything else I can think of, but I cannot get rid of this annoying "ripple".

I moved my HD that has XP Pro installed on it to a new computer. XP boots but it comes up with a "must activate" screen. I select 'Yes' then afet a short delay it comes up with "windows already activated". I click 'OK' then 'logon screen' comes on. Click on my login icon and windows goes back to "must activate screen' again. It's vicious circle.

searched previous forums for similar issues, and saw others complaining of moving cursors while typing. The only response I saw to this was maybe the pressure on the touch pad from wrist was causing. Not the case with me.On 10/30/07 I had (i believe) a backdoor trojan creep in. I have since removed and fixed all errors (allegedly) the only lingering glitch is that while typing, (Word, Powerpt, Search bars, etc.) the cursor repositions itself either ahead or behind my typing. This is making my work take twice as long! This happens at either fast or slow typing speeds. It really is frustrating. To be a little more specific, the movement of the cursor is not visible. It happens between flashes. One flash, it is before the next letter; with the next flash of the cursor it is behind by a paragraph (or more or less).

I am using WIn XP at work using a dial-up method to get on the Internet and to access Emails. However.this is not ideal when it comes to WIndows Updates and Anti-Virus Updates and the dial-up is labourourly slow(.as you all know!!).I am way behind in the updates and would take for-ever to catch up.I have Broadband at home on my own PC and am wondering can I just unplug my Work PC and plug it in at home and down load the Updates overnight via the Broadband. The next morning I will unplug again and carry into work and reconnect. I will then ensure that I stay updated with a daily logon to the Update sites.

My daughter bought a new computer (DELL with WIN XP) She asked me to take the files from her old (hardly working) computer, which had WIN 98, and get them onto the new computer. This didn't prove as easy as it sounded. The floppy drive didn't work on the old one, and no CD burner.I zipped the folders and mailed them to her Yahoo email (which can be openned on my computer and her new one), then openned and unzipped them on MINE and burned them on a cd.This worked good, but the FAVORITES folder couldn't be burned on a cd, it kept saying the file names (urls) were too long and if burned it wouldn't work after. So, I left that unzipped in her email. Today, she unzipped it, and (as I suggested) copied and pasted the folders/url links from the old favorites folder into the new one. This works, they open in the folder (in MY DOCS) but they don't show on the desktop, like START>FAVORITES I think in XP there is a different way of showing this (I haven't looked at it much and have never used anything over 98SE, myself).Anyway, is there a way of getting the favorites (urls and those in folders) into the favorites on the new (XP) computer so they show up like the new ones she is putting in? I looked in google and one place said to export the old FAVORITES folder to a floppy (I couldn't do, it didn't work) and then IMPORT it in the new one.If it has to be imported (and not dragged, or copy/pasted) can't it be imported from the unzipped folder or somewhere else?
Is it too late to save on a floppy (from the unzipped folder on the new computer) and import it, if it has to be done that way? I have been thinking of it like fonts. you can install fonts, but you can also unzip them and drag them into the fonts folder and they seem to go in and work just as well. Can favorites (links) be dragged or copy/pasted into the FAVORITES folder on the new computer and have them show up in FAVORITES on the desktop? Maybe it has to be shut down and restarted first? Maybe I'm missing something. I've never done this before, but putting the old FAVORITES in the new FAVORITES folder seemed like it would work. The original files/folders have been deleted from the old computer. They are in Yahoo mail as a zip file and can be unzipped and are all there. Can they be exported to a floppy from there? Then imported into the Favorites folder, if it has to be done that way?

I think I was on thiese forums a year or so ago with the same problem, and the solution worked. You guys had me run a scan and post a log report of all the processes and such that were slowing down the computer. The last few days the fan has been kicking on a lot, and I'll wake up in the morning occasionally and the computer will be locked up. Not sure if it's something I downloaded or something that just made its way to my computer. What's the program to run the scan? I'll post the log after I get the link.

After reading the threads concerning transferring all data, email addresses, favorites, documents, pictures, ITune library etc. from an old computer with XP to a new computer with Vista, I was completely over my head and understood very little of what was suggested. Is there a program to assist technically challenged people to move into a new computer. I really need a new computer but this process scares me completely. Should I just pay a professional to do it and stop worrying? Someone suggested Norton Ghost. Anyone know of this program and it's effectiveness in my situation?

My computer is running really slow. I run win XP. I have AD Aware and norton systemworks with the most current virus defination updates. My windows XP is updated and my processer is brand new Celeron D. I have checked my MSCONFIG start up options and only a few programs are checked. I cannot figure out what is wrong. I think that it might be a virus but I don't know. I have installed some new programs recently like the GoGo Data toolbar and a bootleg version of Norton Systemworks that I got off of iMesh.

I have a question regarding a legal aspects of Windows XP.I have a machine running XP Pro. In the very near future, I am planning on getting rid it in favor of a new one. However, I would still like to keep the OS license.Am I allowed to reinstall XP Pro on the new PC using the same CD Key? Do I need to notify Microsoft in any way? Is there a special uninstallation process I need to apply to the old machine to 'release' the license?

I moved some EFS encrypted files to my new PC, but can't open them there. I've been using NTbackup, so the encryption is preserved, and all I get is "access denied" when trying to open them. What is the easiest way of decrypting them? I tried exporting the user certificate from the old pc using CIPHER /X, importing it to the new pc, but that didn't help. So how do I go about to decrypt these files? As it is nearly 50gigs of data and a slow network, I'd rather not decrypt the files and transfer them again.

I'm trying to partition my hard disk which currently has a Windows partition on and a couple of other util. partitions. I am using an Ubuntu live CD with GParted to attempt to resize the Windows one, but an error was given concerning there not being enough free space. I had a look around and found out that defragmenting might help.I did it a couple of times with the Windows defragger and once with Vopt. However, there are some "unmovable" files near the end of the disk which are probably causing the problems. Is there any way I can move these, so I can resize the partition?Attached is a screenshot from Vopt after defragging, the green blocks show unmovable files.

hey everyone. I've got a really weird one for you. I partitioned and formatted my hard drive into a 15gb windows/system partition and the rest for everything else (music data games, etc). When i installed XP home to the 15gb partition, everything is fine until i try to move a window in windows. When i click the top part to drag a window around, it responds super slow and whichever program i'm trying to drag shows a huge cpu use spike in task manager. I'm running a 3.2 ghz, 1 gig ram rig. Never seen this before, anyone have any ideas what might be causing it? Could it be some sort of virus left over that my format didn't catch?

I am running Windows XP on my PC. I have two WD hard drives. My C: drive is getting full (on my master drive). I have now an empty D: drive on my slave drive (I used to store my documents there, which I now moved to an external drive). Now I want to move everything from my C: drive to my D: drive. I know how to switch the jumbers so that the slave drive becomes the new master drive. But how do I move the system, files, everything, so that the System boots from current D: Drive (which will become the new C: drive). I do not want to reinstall everything anew, so I am not looking for a clean install, just a move of everything from C: to D:

I've done this and Windows has been a POS about it. I want to MOVE the installation.)Perhaps someone has some secret information that this is in fact possible?
