I have a new computer that came pre-installed with WinXP Media Center Edition 2002 SP2. I was also sent the discs for WinXP MCE 2005. I have tried to updgrade the original installation and then perform a clean install. In both cases after the installation, when I check properties on My Computer it says WinXp MCE 2002 SP2. Shouldn't it say 2005 MCE?

i have recently been experiencing that notorious "ehshell.exe" error while attempting to use Media Center. I got an OS disk from dell but i am unsure of how to repair my system.I inserted the disk, clicked on Install Windows XP and selected the upgrade option, but all this did was give me system a Windows XP Pro option at start up.this is really giving me a problem. apparently now i have 2 Operating systems on my computer.

I am considering building my first computer and would like to use Windows Media Center Edition. I've read it can be a little finicky with some hardware compatibility which I think I could handle, but is it hard for a first-timer to put together a reliable WMCE computer from a software standpoint? I have some experience but would not consider myself advanced by any means.

Wondering which versions of XP can Access which other versions of XP.Specifically, can media center edition access media center edition , or do one or both OS's have to be XP PRO. My understanding is that XP Home cannot access or be accessed via Remote Access.

It worked fine for a few days, then I got this blue screen that said I have a system error and that I am missing a file or it is corrupt c:windowssystem32configsystem.Now, this was fine because I thought I knew the answer to this problem, which is incidentally the answer to another recent problem posted on this board, it can be found here:URL...I performed the operation, and again, it was all well and good for a few days. Then I got the same problem again. I used the same solution to make a fix. Then it happened again. So, my question is what's the problem? Do I have a hardware problem? I even used two different WinXp install discs to solve this problem on different occasions since I only needed the recovery console and I thought that the original disc might have become damaged or something.

I jus put together my own system. I bought a P4 511 processor and an ASUS P5P800-MX motherboard and two 512 MB sticks of RAM I'm using my old 40 GB harddrive from my previous computer. I had installed Windows XP Professional with SP2 and it all worked fine. I then turned my computer off for the night and the next day when I started the computer it would not boot into windows it showed the error message "The following Windows file is missing or corrupt: WINDOWSSYSTEM32CONFIGSYSTEM". I booted from the windows XP cd and went into the recovery console and used CHKDSK /R and when that finished Windows booted up fine. However everytime i turn the PC off the error occurs again. Any ideas how to fix this problem permanantly instead of jus until the next reboot?

I restarted my computer after installing an update to my firewall program. I get the "windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: WindowsSystem32Hal.dll" I tried to do system restore first (F10) and it tried to start windows to start the system restore program I suppose and so of course the same error message came up. After retrying a few times, I tried the other option in system recovery (f10) and it said user data would be preserved but I may need to reinstall programs, so I thought that'd be fine. I let it do it's thing and came back later when it was done and it looked like the first time I started my computer ever where it has that cheesy music and asks you to name your computer, etc. So I'm finally in Windows again (XP Media Edition 2002 SP2) and the first thing I check is my documents folder and all my documents are gone! I checked the properties of the C: drive and it shows that I've used 224GB space, but I can't find my files anywhere. I've looked in all profiles in documents and settings. It seems like the files should be somewhere since the hard drive shows that I have that used space.

So my sister gets hold of a computer in the house and ruins it, and here is the dilemma I am facing: I turn on the computer and right away i come to this message....
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
windowssystem32configSYSTEM
Attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the Original CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.
So I enter the cd rom and press 'r' for repair, I choose C:windows, however before it can begin to repair it asks me for an 'Administration Password' which I have no idea of after many attempts.
I do not want to have to format the pc since I have some very important files on it. Any help is appreciated.

I have Windows Vista Business Edition; I know that I cannot install that version over Windows XP Media Center, so I was wondering if I can install XP Pro over Media Center without having to reformat, and then install Vista over Pro (also without having to reformat).

my OS went from Media Center to XP Pro and I didn't do it! Now I cannot (or computer cannot) access Common Files, among other issues. For example: Trying to open Common Files (to look for file referenced by Logitech install issue) results in error "C: not formatted". My computer probs all began with some auto update that restarted my computer; upon restart, error "Windows could not start because following file is missing or corrupt: C:WINDOWSSYSTEM32CONFIGSYSTEM". Every time i start computer, it looks for mouse driver, then finds and identifies it then can't "find file specified" and default-directs to C:Prog Files/Common Files/ etc etc. I ran chkdsk, defrag, etc. Finally I ran sfc /scannow and was instructed to insert disk 2 of XP Pro, but I don't have XP Pro. I don't want to take up a whole lot of space with my issue; the above is the end result (so far) of much troubleshooting. And somehow an OS that started off as Media Center became XP Pro.
