While surfing the net suddenly my windows XP screen changed and the desktop icons expanded to fill the desktop space I tried the resolution but it did not work and now the preloaded games like spider etc are looking weird and everything looks a bit spaaced out if you know what I mean. I beloeve the issue must be simple but I dont know too much about the tech side
View 9 RepliesI have a 2004 Dell PC that has been virtually problem free until the past month or so. After updating my McAfee virus software, my PC speed and decreased tremendously. Just going from the account log in screen to the desktop takes from 8-10 minutes (yes, I actually timed it.) Opening IE and/or Outlook is lengthy as well, as both often take from 2-4 minutes to open and load for use. I have defraged the system as well as perform a disk clean up. It the computer just ready for the junk heap or could spywear/malwear be the culprit?

why my Windows crashes sometimes when I am surfing the web on either Internet Explorer 7 or Firefox? When I am surfing my screen would just freeze and I cant warm-reset. I originally thought it was just IE7 but Firefox seems to doing the same thing to. It only happens occasionally but then again I just reformatted my machine with some new parts 3 times and updated all my files. So I'm not sure if it will crash every single time I surf the web or just sometimes. I'm not sure what it could be, it cant be a heating problem because

About a week ago, it locked up while I was surfing the web and when I rebooted, the bootup took about 15 minutes. the BIOS seems to be running (the "PowerSpec" logo appears on the monitor) but it remains like that for 10-15 minutes before it FINALLY goes into Windows. I'm thinking a virus? Maybe the BIOS is corrupt? It's been suggested that perhaps one of the memory sticks is bad. Another suggestion was that the hard drive (Seagate 250GB, IDE) may have a sector going bad. I bought a new drive (Maxtor 500GB) and one of the techs here at work cloned the Seagate drive but that didn't solve the problem

Yesterday afternoon, after my ISP went AWOL for about an hour, I noticed that it was taking me 20+ seconds to view some pages while surfing. after leaving it for a day (to eliminate the possibility of peak-hours being the culprit), things haven't changed. I've run AdAware, Spybot, and SpySweeper, and they all came up relatively clean (nothing I could see that would cause a problem like that).

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a computer running XP Pro w/sp2 with a P4 1.8Ghz and 512 mb of pc 2100 memory.I recently did a clean install of the OS. Sometimes when I am running programs the computer will freeze up. The mouse arrow won't move and nothing from keyboard. It is fine surfing the web but will lock up with programs. No error messages come up either. I just have to reboot again to get going.Could this happen if my memory is going bad or something? Everything else seems fine and the OS install went good with no probs.
View 14 Replies View RelatedIn IE7 (Windows XP-sp2 Dell 3000 Intel Celeron D-330)Kept getting Windows Error message when surfing, saying Windows has caused an error and has to close then given choice of sending report.Also had problems with hyperlinks in IE, only showing blank page, or sometimes nothing at all happens when I click on a link.
So I did a uninstall/reinstall of IE6-sp2. Then downloaded IE7 from Microsoft, downloaded C-Cleaner, and AVG anti-virus. No viruses or malicious targets have been detected. Attempted to download AdAware but Windows said it was not a valid WIN32 application. Now, I get continual "Runtime Error" messages, asking "do I want to debug?" Have run a few registry keys per Bob Cerelli's notes, and "regsvr32 msjava.dll" failed. Also "regsvr32 mshtml.dll" loaded, but entry point could not be found. I have tried to set the ActiveX compatibility in the registry, but ActiveX is not listed in the registry keys.The only quick fix I found for IE does not support IE7.
I am using an older HP lap top & running windows 2000 Pro. This lap top is starting to become very slow & slugish. I run Trend Micro PC-cillin virus protection & & other spyware tools... so it is free of these problems. What's happening is, when I am surfing to different pages or even using my msn mail client it hangs up & is always stopping. As I watch the Task Manager/Aplications it showing "Not Responding"

It has one Digital and one Analog port on the back.
I had it setup using 1920 x 1080 on both ports (dual monitor).
But I can't get that to work again.
When I set the monitor using the VGA port to 1920x1080 then it displays 1280x720 on the monitor, but the video card is outputting 1920x1080. The display seems to scroll when the mouse is on the edge of the screen because obviously it can't display 1920x1080 on a 1280x720 resolution.
So as of now, my monitor is displaying everything really big and it's useless at this point.
I upgraded an emachines t2542 from xp home to pro. Now I can't fix the resoluyion past 4 bits. Did the advanced settings, but all that is listed is "default monitpr" with no option to click on 'properties'. Went into device manager and there is no 'display' tab. The only items with ???? on them are an audio and a 'vga' device. I tried to update driver for vga, but it says it cannot be found even though I have the HP 17vs disk in.

Also on the resolution page it shows a plug and play in lieu of a monitor. This computer is used mainly for computer games and internet. I thought about reformatting the hard drive since playing the medal of honor game sometimes the pc locks up but I can't find my restore cds.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI totally believe this is an OS problem based on the troubleshooting I've done, if the mods feel this would be better in another forum please move it.This is probably going to sound like an easy one, but it's got me stumped. Up until yesterday everything worked fine, until I unplugged my monitor in order to test another machine, when I plugged it back into my main machine I only had 640x480 graphics (this was at the login screen. When I logged in and went to video settings the only options I had were 640x480 and 800x600, but couldn't move the slider to 800x600. The only color quality available was 4 bit. I removed the display adaptor from device manager along with the monitor. On reboot everything looked normal (I had all resolution options available in settings), windows detected a vga controller, but not my actual card. I then installed my video card drivers, on reboot I was back to 640x480.

I reloaded Windows XP with SP 1 which is the CD that came with my system (about 5 yrs ago). I completed the install & now the images on my screen are all screwed up. When I go to change the resolution the only selection in 640 X 480 Resolution 16 bit. When I go to Device Manager I do not see an ICON for my video. I also do not have sound. Can someone help me with this. I have an integrated motherboard. The video & audio cards are burnt into the motherboard. Can someone please help me with this.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI had a virus (supposedly) that was ending my explorer.exe over and over again, and the process in the task manager that appeared to be doing so was IEXPLORE.EXE, I know thats IE, but I figured since IE is broken on my computer (go figure) and I have FireFox, why not attempt to delete IE, because every time I ended the process it would come back.So I went into safe mode, I went and deleted the whole IE program folder (stupid thinking) and went back into normal windows. What I saw scared me... I had 4 bit colors (which is what I'm on right now typing to you guys) and 800x600 resolution, and I can't put it any higher.

I change the Settings back to what I like, restart the computer and it will login with my settings then the screen will go blank for a couple seconds and reset to the lowest settings again. WHen I hook up the lcd monitor the only way I can get it to dispay anything recognizeable is when I boot it in vga mode. when I go to adjust the display setting afterward it goes back into the jumbled unrecognizeable mess and It gets set back to the lowest settings to get anything to show up. anyone have any solutions?

Whenever I open Outlook (Office 2003 with all updates installed), the screen blanks, then reloads with 8 bit color. If I change it to 32 bit while Outlook is open, after about 30 seconds, the same blank-reload happens. When I exit Outlook, the sequence reverses, (blank -32 bit reloads). I have tried resetting my display resolution, from every program, nothing works. Interestingly, changing from a CRT to an LCD monitor has made no difference at all.

They are all in the same workgroup, and all except 1 work fine, but on 1 computer i have the following problems:If i click view workgroup computers, it says i do not have permission to acces it, even though i have my workgroup set the same as on the other 3 computers. If i type the name of another computer into explorer like this: \workPC it says it cannot find it, while on other 2 computers it works (and on the 3rd too of course, since that one is called workPC). Also remote desktop connection doesn't work if i type in workPC, but it works on the other 3 computers.
But the other 3 computers cannot see this 4th computer either, it doesn't show up when i click view workgroup computers. It's as if it wasn't in the workgroup, even though i've triple checked it and it's the same as on all other computers.I can, however, access all other 3 computers via IP, like \192.168.0.5 and such, and that works, it also works via IP for remote desktop connection.
The problem that bothers me most, though, is that i cannot remote desktop into this 4th computer, even though remote desktop is enabled and it should work. I can remote desktop to other 3 computers from this computer, but not the other way around. When i try to connect to it (via IP since it doesn't work via it's name), it asks me for the username and password. I enter those correctly, then i get a warning i always get (something about "Remote Desktop cannot verify the identitfy of the computer you want to connect to." (and so on)). After i click yes (*i want to connect anyway*), it just returns me to the window that asks you for the name of the computer to connect to, and that's it.
I am setting up my other laptop (older) that runs XP, I set the screen resolution to where windows told me to but the icons and buttons across the bottom are really small.How do I make the icons, etc etc larger and more readable without sacrificing the clarity? View 9 Replies View RelatedI am struggling with the best options for the LCD screen on my Dell laptop which has a NVIDIA GeForce2 Go video card.The ideal resolution setting for this video card and screen is apparently 1600 x 1200, but that makes things too small for me. So I learned about the dpi setting in Display PropertiesSettingsAdvanced screen. However since this magnifies things for the same resolution, I am not sure why that is better than just using a lower resolution or even what the difference between the 2 options is.
