Applications Not Responding - Surfing To Different Pages
Jan 24, 2007
I am using an older HP lap top & running windows 2000 Pro. This lap top is starting to become very slow & slugish. I run Trend Micro PC-cillin virus protection & & other spyware tools... so it is free of these problems. What's happening is, when I am surfing to different pages or even using my msn mail client it hangs up & is always stopping. As I watch the Task Manager/Aplications it showing "Not Responding"

I am running an XP system on a residential cable connection. Yesterday afternoon, after my ISP went AWOL for about an hour, I noticed that it was taking me 20+ seconds to view some pages while surfing. after leaving it for a day (to eliminate the possibility of peak-hours being the culprit), things haven't changed. I've run AdAware, Spybot, and SpySweeper, and they all came up relatively clean (nothing I could see that would cause a problem like that).

I am running on windows XP SP2 integrated. I realised that whenever I start my PC,windows does not respond(i.e. when I click on my internet explorer and all other applications / programs, they do not respond).I have to wait for at least 10-15 mins or restart 2 to 3 times, then windows can respond.I really do not know what is going on.I have scanned my PC with noadware but found nothing.Should I reformat my PC or perform a system restore? I am currenting using Intel Pentium III processor with 801 MHz,256MB of RAM.

why my Windows crashes sometimes when I am surfing the web on either Internet Explorer 7 or Firefox? When I am surfing my screen would just freeze and I cant warm-reset. I originally thought it was just IE7 but Firefox seems to doing the same thing to. It only happens occasionally but then again I just reformatted my machine with some new parts 3 times and updated all my files. So I'm not sure if it will crash every single time I surf the web or just sometimes. I'm not sure what it could be, it cant be a heating problem because

I have a PowerSpec Desktop PC. About a week ago, it locked up while I was surfing the web and when I rebooted, the bootup took about 15 minutes. the BIOS seems to be running (the "PowerSpec" logo appears on the monitor) but it remains like that for 10-15 minutes before it FINALLY goes into Windows. I'm thinking a virus? Maybe the BIOS is corrupt? It's been suggested that perhaps one of the memory sticks is bad. Another suggestion was that the hard drive (Seagate 250GB, IDE) may have a sector going bad. I bought a new drive (Maxtor 500GB) and one of the techs here at work cloned the Seagate drive but that didn't solve the problem

I have a computer running XP Pro w/sp2 with a P4 1.8Ghz and 512 mb of pc 2100 memory.I recently did a clean install of the OS. Sometimes when I am running programs the computer will freeze up. The mouse arrow won't move and nothing from keyboard. It is fine surfing the web but will lock up with programs. No error messages come up either. I just have to reboot again to get going.Could this happen if my memory is going bad or something? Everything else seems fine and the OS install went good with no probs.

In IE7 (Windows XP-sp2 Dell 3000 Intel Celeron D-330)Kept getting Windows Error message when surfing, saying Windows has caused an error and has to close then given choice of sending report. Also had problems with hyperlinks in IE, only showing blank page, or sometimes nothing at all happens when I click on a link.
So I did a uninstall/reinstall of IE6-sp2. Then downloaded IE7 from Microsoft, downloaded C-Cleaner, and AVG anti-virus. No viruses or malicious targets have been detected. Attempted to download AdAware but Windows said it was not a valid WIN32 application. Now, I get continual "Runtime Error" messages, asking "do I want to debug?" Have run a few registry keys per Bob Cerelli's notes, and "regsvr32 msjava.dll" failed. Also "regsvr32 mshtml.dll" loaded, but entry point could not be found. I have tried to set the ActiveX compatibility in the registry, but ActiveX is not listed in the registry keys. The only quick fix I found for IE does not support IE7.

Is there any way to monitor internet activity with XP such as logon activity to websites, specifically yahoo mail? Is there a log created anywhere in XP
where I can view which accounts may have signed into yahoo mail and when? I know there is software available for purchase to do this but is there anywhere in windows which creates a simple log of this data?

I recently had to have my computer completely restored due to a virus. I lost everything on my computer. Now when I try to access yahoo chat rooms I can't get in. I can get to the chat room itself but when I click on the verification link nothing happens. This has happened on a couple other sites also. I'm not sure how to fix this problem.

I've created a new user account for my other half and it all works fine EXCEPT for the fact that any URL which doesn't end in '.htm' or '.html' won't load in IE6. also have the google toolbar and none of the buttons seem to do anything (but I think this is related to my first problem). On my own account, everything works perfectly. I've tried as much as I can without ANY success (checking for viruses,
spyware, many settings etc.).

This problem has presisted for about a week now, my IE7 will not allow me to view web pages, however, if I were to type www.msn.com in the address bar, I am rerouted to google and I'm given search results for msn.com. When I click on the msn.com result I get the "IE cannot display web page error". I've done several system restores, I've deleted the security update 94453 like some recommended, I've turned off my firewall, done spyware checks, virus scans, and have come to find out nothing wrong with it. My laptop is able to surf the net just fine so it has something to do with my computer, but I am not sure what. Was wondering if anyone has had this happen, and if anyone could help. THanks in advance!

Since I installed SP2 everything seems OK except I now notice that some web pages will load only part way then stop loading. If I use Firefox and go the same page it loads immediately. Is there some security setting I should aware of that prevents some pages from loading? The last page I had a problem with was one associated with Paint Shop Pro - hardly a suspicious website. I like Firefox, but unfortunately my password manager (Norton) doesn't work with it.

I have noticed lately that web pages are not filing the whole of the screen. Each time a new web page opens I have to maximise it, which is a pain. I have the same problem with Word, which when opened occupies roughly the same proportion of the screen as is seen in the print preview setting.

I have a friend who lives in another part of the country so I cannot actually get to her computer. Over the past two weeks we have sent e-mails back and forth trying to find a solution to the problems she is having.
When she first starts up her computer and connects to the Internet (she is using WinXP Pro and a USB modem connected to braodband) she can surf webpages OK and get to her Yahoo webmail account. However, after about 5 to 10 mintues, if she tried to get to a webpage again, including Yahoo, she gets a "page cannot be displayed" message and it is impossible for her to load any webpages at all.The Internet connection is still connected, she can send and receive e-mails using OUtlook Express, but she cannot get web pages to load anymore. We have cleared the caches, done antivral and spyware scans using several different programs (her system is clean) and have tried using both Internet Explorer and Firefox.
Both browsers "freeze" after a time and she gets the error messages saying pages cannot be displayed.Sometimes when she reboots her PC and connects to the Internet she can get web pages to load again but after a time surfing "freezes up" and webpages no longer load. BUT, as I said, the Internet connection is obviously fine because it does not affect the sending or receiving of e-mails using Outlook Express.
